Well, that really depends. I tend to group the Japanese Lolita into two categories. There are those that aren't so nice. They often make a hobby out of laughing at other lolitas behind their backs, in order to feel better about themselves, often because of low self-esteem, generated from overly critical parents or various other complexes. Then, there are those that those who really are genuinely nice, polite, people.
The former will most likely ridicule white people wearing lolita, and can be quite the attention whore. They may think of you as stuck-up or a show-off, simply because you are white, and will stand out in Japan, where there is not nearly as much racial diversity as there is in America. This is often true, even if they have never spoken to you in their lives. The reason for this is mainly because Japan is such a comformist society, where the individuality of a single person will often be considered a threat to the well-being of an entire group.
Once, when I was about eight years old, I went to school in Japan for about a month. I am half Japanese, and to them, I probably looked quite the foreigner, as I don't really have the slender Japanese build, and I was quite a lot taller than most of them. Anyways, while I was there, there were numerous occasions in which I would, quite subtlely, but by the whole class, be ignored, or in some other way discriminated against, simply because I was different.
But I'm getting off on tangents. Back to the main topic...
The latter type of Lolita are usually friendly, eager to get to know you, and are genuinely interested in what you have to say. The're quite curious about American traditions, and the way things are in America, and will treat you kindly, and with respect. They almost seem afraid to give you a bad impression of themselves or the Japanese culture. They're quite humble and cute, really.

Schandelle Well, that really depends. I tend to group the Japanese Lolita into two categories. There are those that aren't so nice. They often make a hobby out of laughing at other lolitas behind their backs, in order to feel better about themselves, often because of low self-esteem, generated from overly critical parents or various other complexes. A lot of the western lolitas are like that too... Quote: They may think of you as stuck-up or a show-off, simply because you are white, and will stand out in Japan, where there is not nearly as much racial diversity as there is in America. This is often true, even if they have never spoken to you in their lives. The reason for this is mainly because Japan is such a comformist society, where the individuality of a single person will often be considered a threat to the well-being of an entire group. To be frank, I think the Japanese lolitas behaving like that are a bunch of hypocrites, since the lolitas are already breaking the homogenous bubble of Japanese society and trying to be individual and different. Any normal Japanese person would look at a lolita and find it inappropriate because they try to be different from the group. Lolitas doing to same to foreigners is just stupid and close-minded.

There's also that whole "anyone can be anything" cliche...
For mychasi [she hasn't read the posts, so forgive if We're repeating], as long as one has the spirit of Lolita, looks/race/weight/whatevs aren't that important.

Yes, there are some lolita snobs. They may snub you because of race, but... in my opinion, it's a waste of time to care about the pettiness of those kinds of people. You can't change your skin, really.

well i could see japanese loli having a problem with wa-lolita (the kimono type loli dressses) but the other lolita types seem to be fine (being based off of victorian and all, plus in the fashion shows theyve been known to use european models..) i think how lolita someone actually is personality wise and whatnot also matters, if someones genuinely lolita theyre going to be more accepting
but ive had nothing but positive responses...
edit: then again im the blue-eyed as pale as pale can be girl with natural dark dark brownish red ringlets...when i went to japan everyone wanted to talk to me ^-^;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

some people are going to make it an issue because thats how some people are. Some may not mean to but they do.
like i was riding in the car with my mom and i said "i should smile more, because as a lolita smiling is good." or something like that but she replys "NO YOU ARE NOT, you are an African worrior!"
then my sister adds "whats lolita? you should be proud of your african herritage!
i like what i like so get off my back. so gothic lolita does not apprear in our conversations too much because i don't bring it up. i like it and that won't change.

I read 'race' as 'lace'! rofl
Anyways it does and it doesnt. I've seen gorgeous lolitas of every race. Though however it's taken is all based on the individuals opinion isn't it?
I might add however that if you happen to be asian, you'll make more friends in lolita communities because even if you're an ugly asian you're SOOO KAWAIII LOLOOLO to all the non-asians. (poking fun and generalizing, sorry) sweatdrop

im not japanese... and im a very accepting person... but ive heard that, in general, japanese have a negative view on westerners in japan at all... probably because most are the gawking tourists or the "otaku" types... even though it would probably be a lot harder to earn their respect, i cant imagine they would give you the cold shoulder forever... especially if you were wearing good clothing and acting like a normal, cool person (as opposed to "OmG JaPn Iz So0o KaWaII!!!! I LuV AzNzZ!!!!")
and also, about the name brands, that really really is important to a lot of people... not only japanese, but others... and those people are hard to get respect from no matter what your nationality is.

I really don't think it matters. I know for a fact that it shouldn't matter, but people don't always go by what's right. I, personally, am a mixed lolita. {black/white} I truly hope that it doesn't matter, because that would be a serious downside to my fashion style.

as long as you find a way to pull it off, it doesn't matter. Anyone can pull it off if they try hard enough. The reason it looks wrong on some people is because they haven't found the right way to wear it to suit themselves, if that makes sense... not because of race, weight etc...

♥ No, it does not. ^-^ I am Japanese but I love seeing all kinds of races in Lolita. Well, as long as they do not damage the fashion.

I'm African and Asian, so I had the same question. Glad there was a topic on this already.
