Hm, you just reminded me...Can we find some of his more enigmatic quotes? The one UmaMandy just mentioned is one, and for some reason Little Midnight and I seem to remember a part in the manga when Fai said something so cold-blooded and ruthless even Kurogane was alarmed.

UmaMandy I know I'm gonna be shot for this, but Fai did strike me as the type who would very easily betray someone... like the way he says he can't smile for anyone (or something like that, I forget!)... sorta gives the impression that he's more than willing to put himself before anyone. he said that he didn't want to get close to anyone for fear of hurting them, which leads me to believe something like that happened before...

YES! FINALLY! I get to share my story!!
OKAY! This is how it goes. Right, so everyone (or at least a lot of people) think that Fai/Fye/Fay ran away from Ceres because Ashura was a *insert bad word here*. He was an abusive meany...etc.
M'Kay! But this is how it went down. Like, you don't really know that Ashura-sama is a *insert bad word here*/abusive meany. People just assume it. I'm sayin' Fye ^_^ may really be the scary one (people already said that, hmm? Didn't read other people's posts)..........bwahaha....and Ashura was the goodie goodie. :O
Like, what if Ashura was a coddling, overbearing sappy man that spoiled his favorite mage? And what if the mage in question was just sick of it and was all "Ya know, I'm gonna put you in a sleep and run away because you're freaky and never let me do anything fun on my own!"?
I can see a cute, happy Ashura in a bright yellow apron trying to force-feed Fai home-baked cookies that taste AWFUL..........everyday.....24/7.
Wouldn't you run from that too?

Here is my theory about the tattoo. I believe that the tattoo is a way to hide fai's power from ashura. When he had to give up his tattoo he said he would no longer use magic. I think this is just because now Ashura can find him when he wakes up. I believe that the power fai has in his eyes is all his own and that he didn't steal it and he just doesn't want to use it since it can be a tracking device. The tattoo was the most important thing to him because I think it gave him freedom from Ashura.
I don't know what to think about Fai about whether he is good or bad. He is mysterious and we know nothing about his past. He doesn't want to get close to others and alot of the time he is silly and smiling which seems to be hiding the real him. I think he might have made bad choices in his own world but that he wouldn't do anything to betray his friends. Especially his little Kuro puu.

Hm, I see it kind of like that myself, Fye-san, but more of a mix. Ashura may have been very fond of the wizard, but perhaps his overcoddling turned towards the unknowing abusive kind, and that's where the issue lies. Fai/Fye/Fay was tired of being trapped down - and so harshly at that - and that was why he left.
Well, it's one of the theories... ninja Really, it's much longer but I don't want to type it up here yet...>_> It may ruin the story for those of you who are reading it.
Which reminds me: how does this "Lying...like when Ashura took me out" line fit into all this? Out of what? And was Ashura the one lying to Fai, or was Fai lying to himself? Or was someone else altogether lying to both of them?

In the LJ post where the translation came from, it said that "took me out" meant along the same lines of "took me out on a date" not "bashed me up".. so that could mean that Ashura did love Fai. But he might've taken Fai anywhere....
But I think Fai was lying to himself... I'm not sure. I didn't read that chapter over and over to get theories.. I was just like "okay... weird scene"

Eku53ru I'm still confused about when Fai referred to having been taken out by Ashura-ou. I looked up the verb (連れ出す - tsuredasu), and it literally means "to take out a friend/companion," but translates to "to take out." Heh...trust issues? Though we already sorta know that. XD Eku53ru edit: I found someone's explanation of the "taking out" thing - it doesn't have one specific translation - and some people are suggesting that Fai was literally taken out of something by Ashura-ou. o_O I personally feel it was like Ashura took him out of a community or something instead of out on a date. o.O Besides, we never said that it meant "bashed him up". It's just rather enigmatic and can imply a lot - just because a companion takes you out doesn't mean your companion has good intentions or that the results are always going to be pleasant. Hm, I put them into a French->Japanese dictionary, and so far the closest thing I've found to 連れ出す (tsuredasu) is emmener, which means "to take [someone] along", and mener, which means "to lead." Interesting. Sortir, I think, would be used if he was talking about going out on the town or something with Ashura, and partir would have been used if they were leaving a place. If this dictionary is correct in translating infinitives, then it makes it sound more like Ashura almost tricked him or something. They also put emporter, but that only refers to inanimate objects, so I ignored that one.

.. Eh, I can't say much, I guess.
Fai's tattoo was for keeping his magic under control. Nothing else that we know of. That explains why he refuses to use it unless it's an emergency. It could go out of control and hurt people, I guess. So it seems that his magic is so powerful that he, on his own, usually can't control it.
Doesn't really have to do with anything but also notice that the bird-symbol on his tattoo is also on the seal of that.... thing Ashura-ou is in.
It's so weird, I really reeeeally like Fai... but there's a tiny bit of hate too. I don't know who he is. No one should really love and trust someone they don't truely know.

My thought has always been that Fye was an apprentice of sorts of Ashura. I mean, if Fye had to resort to sealing him and running like hell, that implies that Ashura is much stronger than him. If not, you'd think he'd just go "Screw you I'm leaving o_O."
Correct me if it's been stated otherwise but I'd bet that Ashura-ou the magic tattoo dealie in the first place, since Fye couldn't control his powers very well.
I'm lead to believe by the Ashura/Fye-esque splash page that they got close.
and..after that I'm stumped. I just guess something really really bad happened and I don't know what it IS GODDAMN YOU CLAMP JUST TELL US ALREADY ASIOFHASOIFHAOSIFHAIOSFHA
Well. I almost was able to express myself like I wasn't crazy.

Anyway! *claps hands together* back to Fai theories! actually... I've just thought of something. Primera's magic with her Kudan is very similar to Fai's magic. Like they both make the words the spell needs (or in Pri's case, just the words)... that made no sense... sweatdrop

Hmm, that's interesting... I doubt the two are related but I've never thought about it before.
I also thought of something (probably stupid) a while ago, and I forgot to tell anyone... Fai created Chii... And what if Ashura-ou created Fai somehow? O.o Especially IF Ashura-ou is the one who gave Fai his tattoo.
