*Blinks at all the translation confusion*
Erm...I don't know but in the booklet that comes with the game it stated "Aerith" I believe. ^^; I think Aeris might be like a nickname her mother gave to her maybe? x.x;; Ionno. Just a thought.

Oh yay! someone agrees with me!

Why just go for one, when you can have the best of both worlds? You know what I mean?

Both Aeris and Aerith are both correct spellings...

to put it simply and without a bunch of intellectual bantering fodder....

Aeris=english translation of name
Aerith=original japanese name

some people who are extremely canon and a**l and insist everything be to the letter of how it was in the japanese.... then i guess you'd want to go with Aerith.

If you like going with how your game experience was playing it in the US when the game first came out (like me), then you might go with Aeris.

I don't think anyone should be treated like it's a crime to go either way.

Some people can get into serious arguments over this. I just usually put Aeris/Aerith whenever I post about her to cover all my bases. I think Aerith sounds prettier, but Aeris is what I orginally read her name as.

Originally (as you will find in the old, ancient Japanese magazine scans for Final Fantasy VII), her name is written as Aerith. Whether it is a play on the word 'Earth' to show her relationship with the planet, or because of the Hebrew word 'Eryth' meaning flower, is a bit of a mystery. However, it was originally Aerith.

Japanese does not have the 'th' sound in their language, though, kind of how other languages will lack another consonant (for example, Korean does not possess the 'z' sound, so when my mother says my name, it is 'Elijabet' instead of 'Elizabeth'). To assume that just because it's pronounced with an 's' sound at the end that it is actually Aeris instead of Aerith is silly, because that'd mean that my mom really named me Erijjabetu, not Elizabeth, and that a similar rule would apply to other languages. It's a a simple mistranslation, but there's nothing wrong with prefering the name Aeris. I myself usually say Aeris, but write it down as Aerith.

On another note, isn't this the twelfth thread or so dedicated to the same topic? Just wondering. razz

Check it out StateOfMind, the original name was Aerith in FFVII. Upon transition from Japan to America, Aerith was mistranslated into Aeris, so that became the American way for the name to be. Once Kingdome Hearts was released, the translating team was better, so the name stayed the way it was in Japan. Aerith was the original, but Aeris was the American translation that is still commonly used today. Both spellings are correct.
