"You needent concern yourself with the things that they say," Sabin dismissed with a wave. "You are here for me." He reaffirmed.
"And as such, I have something I wish to give you." The paper was shiny, in reds, golds, and blacks, and beautiful patterns. The wrapping paper was very neatly folded, with the tape not visable.
"I hope that this will be a nice welcoming gift to the island." He rose as he extended the box to her.

Her heart could be heard in her ears now, and she tried to calm a little, her eyes watching him stand, flicking up his body until they alighted on his face. If he did..whatever it was men did with women, and she was found wanting - the shame she would bring. 'Sankyu Danna-san,' she said, a blush on her face that might even be visible through her white face paint. 'I will be as you say,' Sayuri took the prettily decorated gift, looking at it hard because she was too embarrassed to look Sabin in the face again. She rested it on the desk, and turned it around, trying to work out how to unwrap it without ruining the paper too much. 'It shame to break it,' she said softly.

Sabin nodded with a ghost of a smile. "But it would be a further shame to leave the treasure hidden inside undiscovered."
He gestured to the gift again. "You may open it, and do not worry about the paper. While pretty, it is trivial and only a means to an end." He let a smirk flit across his face for a brief instant.
"I will do what I can to shield you from the darker sides of this island, but ultimately, I am ashamed to say, I am not the ultimate arbitor, merely very high in the chain of command." It pained him to say this. "At least for now." He added - though whether it was a joke or not was hard to say.

Sayuri smiled at that, a genuine one this time and she tore the paper open eagerly. She had received few gifts during her years as a Maiko, and they always were taken away by her Onesan for being unworthy to receive them. Paper removed, she laid her hands on the box lid before opening it. 'Danna-san is a powerful man,' she said, trying a hand at flattery, although she wasnt all that good at it to be truthful. 'He will make safe for me,' and she opened the box.

He took the compliment as it was intended, nodding his head with a smile, then rested his eyes on her, eager to see her expression as she discovered her gift. Inside the box, and folded professionally, lay an equisite kimono, hand-sewn of the finest silk and thread. It was mostly a very dark blue, but swirled with white. Yellow hand-embroidered flowers danced over the textile, drawing the eye along the form. It is... exquisite. "I Hope... that this is alright. As familiar as I am with your customs, I do not know if it is an appropriate style.." Sabin gesticulated, rambling.

It was a beautiful kimono. Sayuri had never worn anything like this, mostly because she had such an awful track record of tearing or spilling things down them. But she was determined that wouldnt happen to this, the first gift she would get to keep. Her breath caught as she lifted the heavy silk from the box, running her fingers over the finely depicted blooms in gold and silver thread. 'Sankyu,' she said thickly, a little overcome to be honest. In her innocence it didnt occur that a Danna might want to either see her in it, or want something in return for such a gift. 'Duvert-san is too kind to this silly Maiko.' she said, in the self deprecating manner that she slipped into so easily.

"You do not need to be so humble, Sayuri." He spoke evenly, using her first name. "You are beautiful, and will only make the kimono more stunning when you do wear it."
He ran his hand along the silk, letting it linger awfully close to her own hand for a moment before withdrawing it.
"I would very much like to see you perform for me sometime soon wearing this kimono." He spoke, looking back to her face.

It was a wonder that the heat from her cheeks had not melted away her make-up, first the gift, then his compliment. She'd never formed an attraction for anyone before - most of her regular patrons where never normally younger then 60. But this was very strange to her, and she felt something like disappoint when he moved his hand away. 'Sankyu,' she said again when she could manage to. 'I would like to dance for Danna-san when he wishes to see me.'

"It would please me very much." Sabin responded. "What is it that is your specialty? The samisen? Fan dancing? Tea ceremony? I am honored that your Okaa-san chose to accept my offer. I am... an anthropologist...." He held up a finger and probed his memory. "Jin...ruigaku?" He gave a small smile, and a (scripted) embarrassed laugh. "I study other cultures, and the geisha have fascinated me. I... am pleased to have you staying here with me, and I wish for you to be comfortable here."

'Danna-san is kind for asking. I play shamisen and dance mostly.' she kept her eyes looking at the table. 'But not so well.' She wasnt familiar with the term so she couldnt really correct him in what he was trying to say. 'It sound interesting,' she said politely. 'Okasan did not say who Danna-san was. I am..pleased to be here.' she was still un-certain that he was who he said he was. Would her Geisha mother really have only been able to find a non-Japanese Danna for her?

"Then I will look forward to hearing you play and seeing you dance." Sabin returned. "particularly in your new kimono."
"It is interesting, but I shall not bore you with the particulars. You.. must tell me sometime of how things were for you in Japan. I would be interested in hearing. And perhaps I can arrange for us to dine together soon. It is custom, is it not? I can see you perform, and we can... get to know eachother in a more appropriate setting."
His eyes swept over her, noting her note of uncomfortableness. "I hope... that you will think kindly on me in my absence."
"Will there be anything else that you need in the meantime?"

'I will be ha-ppy to tell Duvert-san anything he want to know,' Sayuri felt relief flood her at the thought that he seemed to be about to leave. She bowed to cover her feelings. 'I will wait to hear from Danna-san,' her eyes alighted on his face again. 'I'm sure I will always have kind thoughts of him.' She shook her head at his question, her hair ornaments making a noise as she disturbed them with the action. 'I not need anything.'

Sabin nodded, giving a short bow in response. "It was a pleasure to speak with you again. And if you have need to speak to me, just press the '0' on the intercom. I will see to it that your requests are all directed to me."
He strode towards the door, pausing once more before going out. "And... I shall contact you to arrange our dinner soon." He smiled.

Sayuri followed him once more, walking in the small practiced steps that made the bottom of her kimono flutter as she went. 'Duvert-san is too kind,' she said once more. 'Sankyu,' she bowed deeply, straightening up. She felt that she was maybe supposed to do something, he had come all this way and given her such a lovely present. She placed a small hand on his arm, letting it linger there before taking it back swiftly, her heart in her mouth again. 'I will - I shall be waiting to hear.'

He nodded. "Enjoy yourself and your time here." He placed his hat back on his head and tipped it with a cunning smile before turning and heading out the door... and back to the labs.
