or you could just make it from some piping? just flatten out one end of the pipe and trim the edge with some tin snips or something and wrap the handle.

The Love Turtle Usually athames are passed down in generations. And if you lead a coven, then you're children will, too. And most people put their initals on them to help the magick flow better through the athame and the person it self. And it's good to bound them to yourself, so it's easier for you to use, but hard for others. God, I sound like a dictonary! -blink- This is all news to me, to be honest...unless you're in a fam trad that does such things. The only other place I ever heard about that is in the fictional (but delicious) Sweep series by Cate Tiernan. My own High Priestess's children decided not to be Wiccan..in fact, I'm pretty sure they're Anglican (she's in the UK afterall). Making the energy flow better isn't so much a matter of "binding" the tool as it is personalizing it somehow (bought or made or passed down)...I have occult symbols painted onto mine...you could also just funnel your energy into it. Then you cleanse and consecrate it, which aligns it to your energies...without having to "bind" it to you, depending what you mean by "bind." -Ariawn

o.o I have a question and I don't want to make a repeat thread about Athames- So I'll just ask here and hope for the best.
There's no f*cking way my mom would let me have one. Would a wand substitute? I've heard they can be interchangable.

Cynical: Yes, a wand can substitute. They aren't -exactly- the same, but they have the the same basic purpose--to focus and direct energy. The power isn't IN the tool, it's in yourself, but the tool helps us to focus to augment what we do.
The other thing you can do is use a butterknife. One knife from the drawer probably won't attract attention. Cleanse it before use, use it, then cleanse it again and put it back in the drawer. Many Kitchen Witches use a common kitchen knife in their practices.

Mmm... I think that would be pretty nifty, Witchyboy.
But... you mentioned deer antler handle... I'm hoping you don't mean like real deer antlers. D: Or at least, if you do, that you aren't the one who killed it.

You don't have to kill a deer to get its antlers. They do shed them... you just have to know where to find them once they've been shed!

-thoughtful toe wiggle- I don't think it would be a problem if you had killed the deer, anyway, so long as you gave thanks for it and let no part of the deer go to complete waste. That's one of the wonderful things about deer, so many parts of their body are useful. No wonder they're associated with the Lord. smile My boline has a bone handle, I love it..it's the shape of a handheld scythe.

WitchyBoy actually your thinking moose deer dont shed there antlers but they do shed there velvet. Actually, male deer do shed their antlers. I just went and asked my dad. Plus, I remember asking my Papa last Christmas how he got his pair of deer antlers (he lives way out in the country, where there's lots of deer) and he told me that every year, the male deer shed their antlers and that you can walk through the woods (which he has on his property) and find 'em. I'll see if I can find a website for you as proof. I also remember seeing it in a documentary film on Animal Planet. Edit: Here's a link for ya!
