"Hmmm," Martina said, noncommittal. Well, at least the hippie didn't plan to kill her and stuff her body into the RV. Thank God for small favors. "So the PC did this? How about that." Although Martina was stuck with a Cambrian herself and worked at the Institute, she wasn't too thrilled with the drama surrounding the Institute in the US. Sorting out Bolide-related drama in the developing world was irritating enough. At least those problems could usually be solved with bribes and by simply disappearing.
The revelation that the woman was not a terrorist nutjob was a relief. Still, Martina was not eager to be dragged into any more idiotic conflicts on behalf of the Cambrians. Sometimes I wish I'd joined up with the PC, she thought irritably. After several very trying years, she was growing rather sick of Cambrians and their problems altogether.

"That or some of their fanboys." She rocked back on her heels. "...I visited one of their meetings once.. ...just to see if there was any legitimacy to their actions... ...you know they're allied with a lot of white supremist groups?" Newton was rapidly growing sick of the drama herself but in an entirely different respect, it was sickening to see her own species acting like this, killing each other off over children for ******** sakes.

"I've seen plenty of brown, black, red and yellow PC-type groups too. The white supremacists must be a USA thing." Martina had never really had much interest in attending an anti-Cambrian meeting. She had never been a patient person, and Bolide's guardianship had destroyed what little she had. Martina would never be able to sit through an hour or two of PC-style stupidity. "Sometimes they have a point, you know. The Cambrians have killed people."

"Hrmm...yeh. ...must just be a USA thing." Sometimes I wish I were born a different species. She thought bitterly, hell a baboon would be better than being stuck related to this sort of thing. "True, some cambrians have killed people... but statistically speaking... You'd be more in danger of a PC strike than a cambrian. What..humans outnumber them...there's what... 20 of them right now?"

Martina laughed sourly. "Maybe so, but I think I'd have a better chance against ordinary people than against a wild Cambrian." She sighed, looking over the signs scrawled on the battered RV. I probably sound like an anti-Cambrian person myself, she thought. If the still-nameless stranger hadn't seemed so hippieish and harmless Martina would probably have been more circumspect in voicing her opinions.

"Mmmhm." Newton had to concede the one cambrian who had made news by being dangerous would be hard in a one on one fight. A chill wind blew in from the waters and made her shiver up. "That all depends on if the human really.. I mean if they have spetznak training or any sort of martial art training.. sorry. I blather sometimes." She smiled and went into the RV again, getting out a coffee pot that was half-full and steaming and a couple of mugs. "but I see your point, I mean humans don't have a lot of natural weapons."

Spetznak? An unfamiliar word, but Martina understood the general meaning. "Mmmm," she said, noncommittal once more. Dangerous Cambrians were somewhat of a sore spot with her. Watching the strange woman bring out coffee, she wondered how she had been suckered into this conversation. She didn't even know this person! "I'm sorry, I don't think I got your name. I'm Martina," she said, omitting her surname. She waved a hand vaguely at the other woman, not quite offering a real handshake due to the hot coffee in Newton's hands.

Newton nodded at Martina, she seemed nice enough, and people were entitled to their opinions. For a moment she pondered how this got started and then shrugged it off, sometimes just being nice and polite was a good way of dealing with strangers. "Sgt. newton," She set down the coffee pot into the sand and shook Martina's very graciously with her free one. "Pleased to meet you Martina, some coffee to ward off the chill? it isn't quite jamaican or indian but it's pretty decent."

"Sure." Though she peacefully accepted the coffee, Martina made no move to drink it. She had learned suspicion, and though talking to this Newton was okay, she wasn't going to drink anything the woman offered her. The paleontologist raised the cup to her lips and then lowered it without drinking, smiling vaguely.

Newton slugged back some of the coffee to warm herself up some from the wind coming in. It wasn't quite strong enough, she put out her sage and clove cigarette so it wouldn't ruin the flavor. She followed Martina's gaze out to the sea and watched it as well for a while, she was patient and hey, Martina wasn't half bad company. Cassiopeia was safe and very well fed inside of the RV, and Kappa and Mikey were ok too.

The chill breeze coming in across the waves made Martina feel uncomfortable and a little lonely. Being cooped up with Bolide for any amount of time was unbearable, but she found herself worrying about him now that he was gone. Hopefully he would have a nice time living on some remote Pacific atoll and return refreshed and not quite so horrible. Hopefully.
"Thanks for the coffee," she said, carefully setting her cup down on the RV's bumper. "I guess I should be finishing up my walk now. It's a bit cold out here today." Though it was not in Martina's nature to be overly demonstrative, she did feel sorry for Newton, and paused before leaving. "Rosewood's generally safe for, uh, Cambrian sympathizers. I'm sure you can find a good place here," she said, gesturing vaguely.

"Alright, you be careful, lotta crazy people out on the beach..." Newton made a smile, picking up carefully and looking at the beachline. "Yeh... i'm headed up there. ...Wasn't planning on settling down but.. ...well you know the rest. I hope your day perks up, you seem kinda sad."

"Hmmm, thanks." Newton's intent was good, but Martina disliked strangers making personal comments to her. With a short wave of farewell, she returned to the shore to continue her walk. Too much time had been wasted on this little chat, and Martina was impatient to be back in her apartments. She would circle around Newton and her camper and head back home.

Newton watched Martina leave for a bit before packing everything into her RV, hanging the printed t-shirts up on hangers to dry and washing out the coffee mugs. She checked on Cassi smiling a little. "I met some interesting people today, Cassi.. I hope whoever she is missing comes back, even if she is a bit impatient."
the little bug stirred from behind the rocks. Kappa and Mikey frilled at the little thing again and it soon returned the gesture before zipping up to the top of the bowl and circling under the surface.
"Ahhh...hungry little booger.. well.. I brought you fresh seaweed tonight..Enjoy~" She dropped some half-wilted kelp bits into the water of his bowl.

Quote: THE LETTER.. Hi.. Doctor Vrais right? It's me, the person who sent you the box of anti-PC t-shirts, Newton. Hope this letter catches you in a good mood and that the t-shirts were enjoyed... I've been keeping up as much as I can with the news but it ain't much when you live by travelling around all the time in an RV. But that ain't what this letter is about. You remember my last letter about the tour of duty against the PC? ..well something's come up that's changed that. I'm real sorry and I know you either hated or loved when i'd write about those pranks.. but it looks like it's gonna be put on hold for a while. See just a couple days ago I got attacked, some people tried to get into my home and do various amounts of harm, not to mention the graffiti there was outside. I...also kinda picked something up at the beach a few weeks ago. 's a cute little megabooger as you can see in the pictures.. Can't tell if it's a he or a she but she/he likes veggies.. I can't shake the feeling that the guys who attacked would've hurt him/her too. I know you're probably swamped as it is but I gotta ask if I can stay up with you guys for a while. I got a phone here. Just tear the number off the letter and gimme a call when you can. I'll bring t-shirts and make some margaritas. Oh and I'm thinking of naming the little bug Cassiopeia. As ever the disciple of Sgt. Skippy, Sgt. Newton Theophiliat It had been several months since Newton had written that letter. She had been forced by another attack on her RV to take up living in an apartment since then. It had taken some time to wrangle a short-term lease for the apartment and more still to get everything in. Cheifly Cassie's tank. Somewhere along the way out of forethought.. Newton had blown nearly $900 on a large oceanic tank, along with various filters and chemicals and plants for her little bug. "I'm not spoiling the lil booger. Not spoiling cassi at all." She muttered in an off mood at having to stay put for so long and more so at the lack of response from the institute. Idly she opened a package of nori and some other freeze-dried veggies. It seemed the boogerworm preferred dead plants over dead flesh, out of sheer curiousity she dropped a few spiced watermelon seeds into the tank from the baggie she had in her pocket. There was a brilliant flash of color and she could almost taste the spiced seeds herself, and fed herself several for good measure feeling oddly happy and upbeat again, even if the past few months had sucked. Oh well...maybe sometime soon she'd be able to visit the institute.
