Marc had a vague, amused feeling that in that world, he would have liked to be one of those nobles. No, that maybe he would have preferred to raise Haki has one officially. She already acted like a pampered princess anyways. What was a title or two?

But he kept his mouth shut, partially because he was actually paying attention, and also because he didn't want to seem too stupid. No. He'd leave that to Thorn.

"Teaching certificates." he wondered why Hadrian hadn't mentioned this. Of course, it wasn't as if they spoke about their qualifications, but it was something.

"And employment?" he asked, cautious now, wanting to figure most things out. "Will they be expected to spend some time here, or to get employment in the outside world?" because home schooling didn't sound too bad.

Weren't home schooled children supposed to be smarter? Or something.

"Marc." Thorn said lightly, grinning. "Haki's employment is already taken care of." he arched a brow, delicately.

Marc blinked. Huh? Wha-- no. No. He frowned, ignoring the statement. "I guess this sounds better than I thought." he admitted.

School was the last thing on Natalie's mind as she wandered the compound, thinking of all the drama of the night before. She wasn't as depressed and frazzled, to be certain, but she was still mildly upset and very confused. She needed to get her mind off of things.

So, when she saw the nice large group, she decided to head on over. She hadn't spotted Thorn yet, which was, perhaps, a good think. She wasn't really... ready for his special brand of attention.

As she approached, discussion of 'schools' reached her ears, and she almost panicked - she hadn't even THOUGHT about that yet! So she jogged the last short distance, skidding to a halt close enough to the group to hear but far enough away so as not to cause a huge commotion when she slipped and fell on her butt.

Ow.

Stephan just nodded, agreeing with Marc's comment. There weren't really any more questions popping into his mind, so he was trying to focus to see if there was anything that had been forgotten. But when he heard a bit of a thump, his attention broke and he turned to look, "Natalie? You ok?" Score, he'd remembered her name. Alright, so it hadn't been very long, but she hadn't exactly been a friend. He'd just met her in the lab, and it had taken him enough to just remember the mage's name.

His mind was pretty much gone from the thought of school, finding her tumble a bit more entertaining. Arms still crossed over his chest, he crouched down, still looking at her with a smile, "That dry ground sure is slippery, huh?" Alright, so he couldn't help it. A bit of teasing was fun, friendly. She could handle it. Hopefully, or he might have just earned himself a smack in the head from Remi. Thinking of that consequence, he got back to his feet and walked toward her, offering a hand, "Need some help?"

Considering that Marc seemed to be asking all the questions, Remi also turned her attention to Natalie. Apparently Stephan had beat her to helping the girl up. For a brief moment she tensed as that sense of feminine competition came out of no where. Where did that come from? She pushed those thoughts out of her mind. She'd only met Stephan once, it wasn't like she should be feeling that. Plus, Natalie was too young for him. Unless he was that kind of person...

Banishing the thoughts from her head completely, though still on her guard, she smiled at Nat since Stephan was already offering a hand.

"Long time no see, Natalie. You alright?"

Marc looked over, distracted at the girl who had fallen into the meeting. Enough people were helping her that he didn't move- he didn't want to be another pair of hands. And besides, he was, quite seriously, worried about his little princess.

He couldn't remember the time when he had expected a son rather than a daughter, and so he was busy fretting over her future, like any mother duck who was worried if their child would end up as tomorrow's dinner.

Or something.

Thorn looked at the new arrival. He wanted to talk to Ahneta about this employment thing, really. "About employment." he began, delicately almost. He wasn't sure about this one yet. "In the future, could corporations hire them as normal employees?"

Natalie, was it?

He looked over, and smiled, inclining his head in greeting. "Natalie."

Natalie took Step's hand, smiling awkwardly at the group as she hauled herself up. Luckily, she was wearing jeans for a change, so nobody had gotten, er... a view. Still, the simple fact that she'd slipped on, as Stephan so nicely reminded her, dry grass embarrassed herself enough to bring a blush to her fair cheeks.

"Er, you know grass! Sneaky stuff, grass..." She laughed, nervously. "Thanks... Stephan. Right? Did I get that right?" Yeah, it was the annoying guy from the labs. But it was a familiar, not so menacing face. Right?

She turned to Remi once she got back on her feet. "Oh, hey Remi. Yeah, I'm fine. Just wounded pride."

Wounded pride. Hm. Well, there was that. Better than a broken heart, yes? No, not broken - scratched. Scratched was a better adjective.

Thorn's greeting shook her out of her reverie, and she jumped back in surprise, nearly falling over in the process. Thorn? Here? Why? It wasn't totally unwelcome, but... but... oh, but it made her head hurt!

"Oh, er... hi... Thorn..." She smiled sheepishly at him. "Thanks for, ah, last night."

At her thanking the older man for "last night" Stephan tensed up a bit. Interesting. Very interesting. Alright, so maybe it was something innocent, but from the way the man had already been talking, he doubted it. Of course, that was just his brotherly instincts kicking in. He had a younger sister about Natalie's age, and no matter how hard he tried not to care, he was highly protective of her. And now that he was so far away from her, Natalie was looking like a good mental replacement.

But now he was torn. Take a defensive stance between Thorn and Natalie, or stay by Remi where it wasn't awkward? Though it took a bit of mental convincing, he stepped back toward the only one of the group he considered a friend, telling himself that Natalie was old enough to take care of herself. His sister wasn't, even if their ages weren't much different, but Natalie was.

Something about this Thorn guy just creeped Remi out. The smile. The strange suaveness about him. The way even Marc tensed up around him. Something just wasn't right. And Natalie's 'last night' comment wasn't helping her impression of him.

Unfortunately, Remi's wasn't the type to take the 'guardian' role, especially against people who were obviously larger, stronger, and more persuasive than she is. The only exception was when small children, such as Gavin or Haki, were involved; and Natalie definitely didn't fit under that category. The most she could muster was a slightly strained,

"So you two also know each other?"

At least having Stephan nearby made her feel slightly more confident than usual.

"They should feel free to seek employment elsewhere. We want people interested in our work here of course - but they don't need to work here if their interests lead them elsewhere."

Or they're led elsewhere by other people, anyway. Ahneta had a feeling about Thorn, and she usually trusted her feelings. Hmm...she'd need to remember to check into this later.

It wasn't neccessarily a bad feeling. Perhaps if Dacian had been paying attention, he'd have gotten a bad feeling - but Ahneta was hardly as 'moral' as he comrades.

Thorn's lips curled into a smile. "It was my pleasure." he purred the words out, and later, later, Marc knew he would demand to know just what had transpired between this man and one of the other guardians. But not now. Not in front of the other mages.

In a silly, foolish manner, Marc wanted to make a good impression. They worked with Hadrian, after all... and he wanted them to like him. Because they were Hadrian's.

In response to Remi's question, he arched a brow. "We're friends." Funny, what friends could mean. And he nodded. "I attended a show of hers last night. A wonderful production." and then, a sly glance.

"With Hadrian. You know of him?"

Of course they did. It just made him feel all nice and funny inside, knowing that he was rubbing something in. Changing the subject- in case that foolish employee of his interrupted, he nodded.

"Their powers." he mused, outloud. "It will prove to be very useful for any employer, yes?"

A couple of them were toddlers, more on the way, perhaps? Witness the size of the compound, he had some idea just what he could do with them all.

Yes. It was very useful.

Natalie felt Stephan and Remi begin to bristle - she was used to this tension, after spending all of the previous night swamped with it.

But that didn't mean she enjoyed it.

She nodded in agreement with Thorn's analysis. "I was having a bad night last night. He helped me through the worst of it," she added, quietly. Then she took a step back away from him, perhaps closer to Remi and Steps, and fell silent. She'd listen, and then ask Remi later what she had missed.

"I've met Hadrian," Remi replied, still not completely comfortable with talking to Thorn. "...once."

Of course, she failed to mention he was wearing only a towel when she first saw him, and the most clothing she'd ever seen him in was a bathrobe. But no, Thorn didn't need to know that. Especially when he said things with a certain tone that put minds way past the gutter and into the sewage lines.

She nodded at Natalie in understanding. However, she still didn't like the feeling she got from Thorn around Natalie.

"Well, if you ever have another bad night feel free to knock on my door," Remi offered to Nat with a smile, hopefully giving the girl another option for next time. "I'm sure I could attempt to cook something up."

Useful, huh?

Ye-es...Ahneta needed to do some checking on him. Or perhaps she would just ask Hadrian about him, since they apparently knew each other. Knew each other well enough to go to a play together? Hmm...well, well, well.

Just a friendly affair or the other mage finally getting some?

She'd ask, of course. After teasing him. And it seemed like this Thorn was very - friendly in general, so if he managed to get Hadrian in bed, she'd definintly want to speak with him.

Why?

Because that took a lot of skill all on its own.

Thorn decided that this girl named Remi didn't seem to like him very much. And the way she stuck to the other guy... well, it was cute. But a little bit too early. Maybe the next time he saw them, they'd be in each other's arms a little bit more?

No matter.

Marc in the meanwhile, was busy processing what was happening. And it was with this that he nodded, stiffly.

"I believe." he said, simply. Cordially "My questions have been answered. If I have any more, I'll be sure to ask Hadrian." he shot a dirty look towards Thorn. Professional etiquette? What was that?

"Thank you." he nodded. He'd go soon. Away from this vile man. And from the young girl. And the two others. And the mages and...

Well. He'd just go.

Natalie smiled at Remi. "I will, no worries. (Hah) And maybe I can get your boy's measurements, so I can make clothing that will fit around his wings?"

Through all of this, though, Natalie's eyes wandered back to Thorn. Thorn, who had kissed her and then left her the night before. Thorn, who she was completely unsure of what to think about.

Thorn.

Hm.
