Angst ridden. Definitely.
He is and was spoiled, but he never liked those things. I think he'd be the same angry, sad boy he is now even if he was living on the streets with no help. So I vote angst ridden ^^

I vote for Kai being a spoiled brat. I mean honestly, when he lost against Tyson the first time, what did you see? He was arrogant and didn't accept the defeat, still saying it was a fluke, but that is what makes me love him more... He's so sweet! ^^ And spoiled brat is... attracting.

How did he have a bad childhood though? His childhood is never really explained in the anime and only partially explained in the manga

In the anime it says that Kai lived in the abbey...I think thats enough info...especially with what has happened in that place...
