Don't eat the pooka, plz. D:
Toby crouched on the arm of the apartment's living room couch, his tail twitching now and then as he concentrated, waiting. Lying in wait. >3
He'd been there for fifteen minutes already, which seemed like forever to the little dog, but no amount of hardship or stiffening muscle was going to put him off from his task. Pure, single-minded determination kept him waiting with surprising patience.
..and then, finally, his now-twenty minutes of waiting paid off, as a brightly red-striped little critter passed under the shadow of the sofa. So unsuspecting. So...tasty.
Once the unfortunate pooka was in just the right spot, Toby pounced with a yodeling warcry of a howl, plummeting down from the couch's height to land right on his target. The impact of the slightly larger Velvet coming down on it from above stunned the little creature, and thusly it was felled and incapacitated.
Containing his excitement just enough that he wasn't wriggling with it, the ambusher set upon his adversary with...his tongue. Licking the sweet, candycane-flavored fur from head to long legs. And then, just as he was about to give that short little tail a nibble, he was thwarted by an outside force he had not taken into account. 'Mom.'
One moment, he was enjoying his well-earned treat, and the next, he found himself lifted up by cool hands underneath his belly, as he came face-to-face with Iden.
"Toby! How many times do I have to TELL you? Do not..eat...the pooka!" Sighing, she tucked her little setter-of-ambushes under her arm and bent to pick up the beleaguered, half-stunned pooka up off the floor and set it gently on the couch. "I know they taste good, hon, but they're not for eating. They're pooka, not food."
Patting the top of Toby's head, she started towards the kitchen. "Let's get you some real food to eat, shall we?"
Where his ears and tail had drooped before, now they picked themselves up again at the offer of something to eat...but mostly, because the center of his little world wasn't really mad at him.

Moving? What? Hey, these boxes are nifty...
"Toby! Little brother, hanni is looking for you," came the sweet mind-voice of the Velvet's pard sister as she squeezed through the door of Iden's bedroom. Apartment doors were a difficult fit for the large, black-winged cat.
"I know you're in here, Toby. I heard you, rustling around like a the breeze in the leaves. Only much, much louder."
Once through the door, she hopped up onto the bare mattress that rested atop the dark bedframe and peered down at the few remaining cardboard boxes. "Let's see...with only boxes three, where could my brother be?" she rhymed with a silly lilt, before reaching out with one large paw to give one of the boxes a gentle thwap.
She tipped her ears forward, listening carefully to the sound response of the box. "No, no, not in that one...let's try again, shall we?"
A second box was tapped, producing nothing but the sound of paper and fragile things. Whoops. Better hope she hadn't hit it hard enough to break anything.
"Well, well. I guess that means Toby's in...this one!" As she spoke, she extended her paw one more time and gave the last box a sound thwack, to the sound of rustling paper and something more solid.
And finally, after a muffled bark, Toby's head popped up from between the cardboard flaps, then he wriggled himself halfway out, paws folded over the edge. That accomplished, he stared adoringly up at Tori with a panting, doggy grin.
"Aha! So there you are at last!" With a fond shake of her head, Turmali descended from the bed and very gently picked her brother up in her mouth, carrying him as many a predator mother or 'nanny' might. "Come with me, little brother, and we will go to our new home with our hanni. There will be plenty more boxes there for you to play with, I promise."
As Toby dangled comfortably from his sister's jaws, he boggled at the idea of a 'new home,' but all worry was eclipsed by excitement at the prospect of more boxes to explore.

July 5th
I'm awful about keeping up with journals and all that crap; I think the only reason I don't stop entirely is because I just don't want to admit defeat.
At any rate, there's hasn't been a whole lot eventful going on, besides moving. That apartment was really starting to get claustrophobic, especially after Tori grew and all. This is more convenient, anyway, and I can help Sabbah with her siira business more.
The animals are all taking it in their own ways, but Toby seems to be alright with it. He's definitely not frightened or anything like that. He's just been settling right in. I think he's happy just to have me and Tori around, regardless of where he is.
Speaking of where he is, he's been hard to find sometimes. He keeps playing in all the boxes sitting around. Just yesterday he was pushing and dragging some empty ones around, with a bit of help from Tori, making some kind of box 'fort' or something. Whatever it was, he looked quite pleased with himself...and really, really cute.

I really don't know quite what to say, other than to be irrevently blunt and say that that little dog has some serious balls. Alright, there, got that out. It could almost be funny, if I weren't worried half to death about it.
He just..can't DO things like that! He's much too small to be picking fights, even with a reason. It'll only get him into trouble.
He..he just up and attacked Vlad. I didn't have any idea Toby was even around, I thought he was out for a walk with Tori. I guess they'd just gotten back, and..well, he caught the tail end of something unpleasant, and he just went crazy. I don't know how else to put it.
I didn't really know what was happening until it happened. I was just..I was on the floor, and crying, and Vlad was yelling, and all of a sudden Toby came out of nowhere and just went for him. God, if he weren't so small, I think he would have done Vlad some serious harm. I'm sure he meant to; I think he wanted to.
As it was, he couldn't manage much more than to latch onto his boot, and even then he couldn't really get a good grip on it. So in the end nothing really happened, but...I don't know. It's worrisome, and a little bit frightening.
He nearly bit me when I went to grab him, but I think then he realized what he was doing and snapped out of it. Still, I'm worried. I know he was trying to protect me, but..there's really no way for him to do that, especially with Drac. That's something no one can do.
I'm so afraid it could get him hurt.

Meeting D and Sidney...properly. And learning why chocolate+dogs=bad. [In-thread RP continued via PMs.]DDB The door to the old Velveteen shop swung open and D entered, her gaze fixed on some envelopes she held in her hand. Sidney sat curled around her neck and was peering at them too, while chatting away in her ear."That one'ss for Acia of coursse. And that one iss for Erae... Let'ss ssee...."When they were well into the shop though, D looked around and noticed it was empty. "Well we can wait around for a bit if you like Sid. See if anyone comes. Or I can leave the ones I don't have addresses for here to be picked up." Meepfur Iden approached the shop with a certain degree of trepidation, given that she hadn't stopped by in..months, really, and she wasn't terribly sure wht sort of reception she might get, depending on who was around. Her hair was held back and up by a claw clip, so that the red ends brushed just below her shoulders, swaying when she moved, as did the black, pleated skirt she wore. She'd clasped her hands behind her back to stop herself pulling anxiously at the laces of her corset top, and was looking down at Toby as she walked, clearly paying more attention to the young Velvet than she was to where she was going. Then again, there wasn't much to trip over, except maybe for him. Toby was enjoying the little evening stroll immensely, and was making a game of snatching at the red laces of Iden's tall boots. Shoes and shoelaces of any sort were among the dog's favorite things, but he had yet to get a good taste of these nice, clunky ones. They just had to be good for chewing, especially those heel parts. Oooh...Sighing, the young vampire gently shook one leg to get Toby to let go of her bootlaces, then reached out with one pale hand and opened the shop door, shooing the little dog in before her. DDB There was the sound of the door now, and D looked up to see who it was. She was glad for company and hoped it was someone she needed to give one of Sidney's invites to. To her surprise a minature dog came bounding in. It took a moment for her to guess it was a velvet, seeing as it was so small. And then of course there was Iden stepping in behind him.... except... she was looking a little ill. "Hello Iden. How are you?" She called politely. "Haven't seen you in a long time."Sidney of course, always paid more attention to the velvets than their owners. He recognised the scent of Toby as he'd come in and whipped his head up to look. What a surprise that was! He'd grown!
"Toby!" He exclaimed with an excited hiss. Meepfur "Ah," Iden started, self-consciously pushing an escaped strand of hair behind one of her long, pointed ears. She looked up from watching Toby (couldn't he at least wait until she wasn't wearing her boots to chew on them?) with eyes turned bright red, smiling a little sheepishly. "Evening, D.." Toby was just about to turn around and make another grab at one bit or another of Iden's boots, hoping she'd be too distracted to really notice, but quite forgot about it once they were inside.
His ears threw forward at the sound of his name, and he barked excitedly, his tail starting to wag with enthusiasm. He had a very vague sense of recognition, even if the only real result was that he was happy to see Sidney, despite not having properly 'met' him yet..at least, not in actual memory. And besides that, Toby'd never even seen a real snake before. So Sidney was of immediate, urgent interest. Oooh, indeed.DDB D sat and blinked for a moment, taking in Iden. Something wasn't normal.... She looked pale and ill, well that wasn't unusual, but even though she had met her only once before, she didn't recall her having pointed ears or bright red eyes. Only one other person she knew had those features.... "Iden?" She tried to sound as casual as she could. "Umm... what have you been up to while I was away?"Sidney was completely unaware of Iden's state. She wasn't an imediate plaything in any case and here was Toby alive! He had been waiting for him to grow since meeting him as a plush. Now they could have some real fun and adventures. Well... if Toby stopped chasing Iden's feet. Sidney was pretty sure he never did anything like that when he was an animal.
He slipped down off D's neck, down her leg and onto the floor. "Hey look at you! You're alive now!" He knew the dog couldn't answer but he was too happy to worry about that. Meepfur "Uh..." Iden rubbed the back of her neck, trying to come up with a decent answer. Somehow, 'Oh, y'know, being a vampire,' just didn't seem like the way to answer. Actually, nothing really did. "Um, well..I moved, but other than that..heh..." Feeling more than a little awkward, she grinned in a bad attempt to cover it up..and in so doing, offered a glimpse of her fangs without really meaning to. Once Sidney was on the floor, Toby wasted no time in bounding over, skidding to a shaky halt in front of his fellow Velvet. He whuffed excitedly, wagging his tail harder.DDB "Moved huh? Anywhere nice?" D started but then stopped when she caught that familiar glint coming from a pair of lengthened incisors. She stopped and looked over to Sidney and Toby. They didn't seem to notice anything or were worried. Was she just imagining that Iden was looking rather... vampiric? But that did bring another thought to D's mind.... You had to be turned by another vampire and the only one she knew was....
Her eyes went wide. Surely Nar wouldn't!! He wouldn't do that to another person! "Did... you..." s**t! This wasn't working either. She couldn't think of how to put it. "Umm, am I right in noticing something different about you? Did you... Did Nar..." D could feel her throat tightening. Nar told her he hadn't done anything while she was gone. Now she finds one of the other customers has been turned!Sidney grinned at Toby. He was enthusiastic that was obvious! And being enthusiastic was good for exploring... so long as he didn't accidentily set off any booby traps. "Hey now you can come and play at my party! It's hard to play went you're a plussh but now you can join in! There'll be hide and sseek and camping and ghossst storiesss." Meepfur "Oh! Oh, oh, damn.." The last was more to herself than anything, as she fumbled for what to say, honestly surprised by D's assumption that it had been Naraka who turned her...it was an understandable mistake, inevitable even, but it had never occurred to her that someone might make a connection out of it. Iden was rather distressed herself as she rushed to reassure D. "Y-you're right,..but no, no, it wasn't Nar, I swear. He didn't, he really didn't..." Toby's tailwagging was starting to involve the rest of him too, and he was fairly wriggling with his enthusiasm. He hadn't any idea what camping was, or a party, or hide and seek, but if they were new ways to play, well, that was fine by him! An excited whine worked its way loose at the prospect.DDB At least Iden wasn't turned into some raving creature consumed by bloodlust. D had been told it was hard to resist for new and complete vampires. But Iden's wavering voice sounded human enough and D told herself off for making such an assuming notion.
She still seemed rather dazed by all this though. "So you are.. you have been.. turned? But it wasn't him? Who then? I know someone would have had to... do this to you. Are you ok? I mean.... did you want it?" She looked very nervous asking but it just slipped out.Sidney looked up at his carer's tone of voice. What were they going on about? He hadn't really been paying attention. But Toby's whine brought his attention back to the dog velvet. The more Sid told him about the party and the things they would do, the more the dog wriggled and wagged. "Yeah yeah, ssure you can come! And we can do all that sstuff. It'll be great. A bit belated but that'sss ok." Meepfur "It was, ah..someone I've been living with for awhile. Well, he's been living with me. Close enough." She chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of her neck again. She witheld Vlad's identity for now, knowing it wasn't something most people would be inclined to believe, that she had Dracula hanging around. "Did I want it? I..don't know. But it wasn't entirely...unexpected." She didn't seem to mind answering D's questions; Iden figured she probably owed the other woman at least that much, after giving her something of a shock and all. Toby followed Sidney's gaze, looking faintly concerned for a moment. But Iden didn't seem to be in any sort of danger, just a bit flustered. That checked out as a fairly normal state for her. So he turned his attention back to Sidney, though the brief pause had at least slowed down his wiggling considerably. It was hard to keep up for long, anyway.DDB D shuffled and moved to sit down on the couch, rather heavily. She needed to get off her feet and let this sink in. It'd certainly pushed Sidney's invites out of her mind for the moment.
"Another vampire? So not Naraka..." She sounded very relieved by that, having been imagining all sorts of things that he might have done while she was away. No no, he'd told her the truth, he hadn't done anything.
But that still left Iden and some other insights into her life. "You've been having a vampire living with you? No wonder Nar didn't strike you as very unusual then..." She mumbled a bit. "I didn't know you did. But it wasn't unexpected? You mean... it was planned or something? Was it an accident? I'm sorry.... I, I.." She looked up, falling over her words. "I mean, it's not that bad... is it? There's nothing wrong with... I don't think anything bad of you just because you're now one... Oh I'm just messing this up. Are you sure you're ok?""Hey, want to play something now? Or how about I show you around the shop? I made a map of the place you know!" Sidney suggests to Toby, seeing as D was making no sense but seemed ok to him. (( Hey, he was cold-blooded after all. xd jk )) "What do you like? I played exploring with Kippit and Willie before... although she was still a plush so it was really just Kip. Umm... or we could play a doggie sort of game. Like with a ball or something." Quote: Iden trailed after D, settling herself against the opposite arm of the couch. She was glad to hear the relief in D's voice, after all that. "He's been around since..damn, since last November." She looked taken aback herself at that..that seemed so recent and yet long ago. She shook her head, clearing it. "No, it wasn't an accident. What he does is usually exactly what he means to do. But it wasn't exactly planned either, not really. Well, he never said anything about it or gave any real indication, anyway. I guess I just...I wasn't exactly expecting it, but...it wasn't surprising. I mean, it was definitely surprising when he did it, but...oh, that's not making sense. It was and it wasn't, in different ways." Okay, stop rambling. "It's..it's okay. I understand. I'm alright, I guess. Better some days than others, but mainly I'm okay." Toby perked his ears again, eager to do just about anything Sidney might come up with. He'd be quite happy to do anything from play ball to just following him around. He was, really, quite easily amused. So he just gave a further wag of his tail and nudged gently at Sidney with his wet nose, before lowering his front half in a play-bow.Iden sounded very confusing. It was unexpected but not a surprise? This guy she lived with sounded rather... strange. And imagine not planning it? But it wasn't an accident. "Did he even ask you if you wanted it? That's... that's so terrible! I mean, it's a huge change for a person. Why... what made him think you wanted it?" D shut up when she realised she was probably making Iden feel worse about her situation. She ran a hand through her hair and looked sheepish. "Sorry, I'm not really helping huh? Umm... well, there are some good things. Easy diet for one." She gave a very sheepish chuckle at that but quickly stopped. "Umm... no more illnesses or stuff like that... If anything it should make you stronger."Sidney patted at Toby's nose in a vague sort of way. Well, the dog was as big as he was after all! Would make a great pack horse.... Sid almost chuckled to himself at the joking thought. "Like those ideas? Ok, well umm.... I don't have a ball... Maybe I should show you around first and then we might find one. This place is a kind of toyshop, well even if it only sells plushes. Maybe there's one laying around." He started to slither off towards the vending machine. It was a favourite of his. Not for the food inside of course! But because it made a great climbing frame inside. "This here is the Temple of Treats!" He announced, waving at it with a scaley hand. "In it's depths lie all sorts of edible goodies. And it's pretty neat for hiding in too."Iden sighed, leaning back. She certainly didn't want to upset D any more, but she wasn't going to lie to her. Apparently Vlad was as hard to hear about as he was to explain. "No, he didn't ask. He's not exactly...considerate like that." "Nah, don't be sorry." She waved her hand lightly. "I don't mind if you ask, it's just..you probably won't like most of the answers." She shrugged, smiling faintly. "Well, it does have its good points." Toby followed right after Sid, claws clicking across the shop floor. At the snake's announcement of what it is, he perked up, eyeing the huge thing with wonder. Treats? Treats! But where? The Temple (not that he knew what that was) wasn't a giant treat, was it? It didn't smell like one...well, there were bits of food-smell on it, but they didn't belong to it. Bewildered, Toby did the only thing there was to be done. He licked it.
And to his sore disappointment, it tasted like metal and plastic. It was not a big, glowing treat. Blast."He didn't ask?" D looked quite shocked. "So he.. he attacked you then?" She looked at Iden quite concerned. The poor girl! She'd had this forced on her by some guy who was starting to sound like a real jerk. "Well I think you need to kick him or something. How dare he! I mean, yeah good points... but you didn't ask for them. Why would he do something like that? Just because he's not that considerate? Are you sure you want him staying with you?"Sidney laughed out loud with hiss, as Toby did the only thing reasonable and tasted the vending machine. "Oh no! No, no! It'ss got things inside that you eat. Not the whole thing. That's just like a... casse or box. Here, I'll get you something out of it that you can eat."
With that he slipped expertly through the flap at the bottom and began to climb up the shelves and hanging packets of chocolate and crisps and other confectionary. Grabbing something he had seen D eating on a couple of occassion he headed back down and climbed out, pulling the Snickers bar behind him. Unfortunatly he didn't possess the common knowledge that chocolate would make dogs sick.
"Here. Thiss one is nice. Well I don't like it myssself. Too ssweet. But D eatss it ssometimess.""Well, I wouldn't say he attacked me...he wasn't awful about it or anything. And he'd, ah, bite me now and then anyway, which I didn't really mind, so I didn't quite realize what he was up to at first." She looked a little embarassed at the admission she hadn't minded being bitten, and scratched her head. "Why would he do that? Self-interest, really." Iden sighed, shifting. "And yeah, I'm sure I want him around." Toby waited patiently for Sidney to return, backing up a little to watch him through the glass, fascinated. Upon the snake's return, he rushed forward to give him a great big lick before setting to an investigation of the tasty something Sidney had brought with him. He whuffled at it curiously, discovering it smelled a lot like one of Iden's critters, some poor pooka he was always licking and trying to gnaw at. He licked the wrapper experimentally."You didn't mind getting btten?" D tilted her head at the undead girl. "Well, it gives me the shivers!" She exclaimed, without much thought. "Phobia of needles you see? You make it sound you were a favourite snack of his... umm, no offence." She picked up a cushion absently and held it in her lap. "I'm glad it wasn't a terrible experience. And that you want him around. Maybe I'm getting the wrong picture of him. Perhaps he thought you'd be better off like this? You know, being immortal. As you say, self interest... perhaps he didn't want to be lonely..." Sidney rubbed at his face where the dog had decided to show his appreciation in the only way dogs can. Once he had gotten pretty much all of Toby's saliva off his scales he looked up to see the dog sniffing at the chocolate bar. "Oh right, gotta open it firsst..." He reached for it as Toby began to lick at it curiously. Gripping it in his hands, Sidney used his teeth to get ahold of the wrapper near the top and tear it open so the brown chocolate coating was revealed. "There you go. Don't eat it all though.... it'ss pretty big for a velvet." He warned his new friend.Iden cracked a grin, chuckling just a little at D's reaction. "Huh, I guess a fear of needles would carry over to fangs...I hadn't thought about it like that." She tugged at her armwarmer, thoughtful. D really wasn't getting the wrong picture. "I'm safer, at any rate. I know that's something he wants. But not wanting to be lonely? I don't know..I don't know if he even gets lonely. I don't think he'd miss me, not really." Iden stilled, tilting her head at the sound of the crinkly wrapper. Mildly curious, but not particularly concerned, she cast a glance over at the two velvets, though she couldn't quite see what it was they had. "Mm, havin' a bit of a snack?" Toby wagged his tail at Sidney in further thanks, then gave the candybar a good lick. Ooh! It was like Iden's little brown pooka! But there was a hint of something else, too. The dog had bitten down on one corner when he heard his caretaker's voice, and perked the ear closest to her, giving her a questioning look out of the corner of his eye. Maybe she'd want some, too? Iden never did take him up on his offers to share food, but maybe she'd like this.."Yeah, and it's not just in your arm either, it's in your neck." D emphasized with a chuckle and gave a feigned shiver. "It more about the whole piercing into the skin part really. Just not something I like even imagining." Iden's comment about this vampire wanting her safer made D nod. Iden wouldn't get sick now and would be stronger, that's for sure. So yeah, it could be considered that she was safer like this. "Oh I don't know... I've met some people you wouldn't think cared about much at all, especially other people. But when you get to know them they're really quite mellow and soft inside. Like a defensive shield. That's what he might be projecting but not necessarily what he's feeling."
When Iden looks to see what the velvets were up to, D does as well. Spotting Sid and Toby on the floor with something. "Sidney, what are you up to?""I got him something from the machine. You know, the one with chocolate and nuts like you like. I'll go put a coin in if you want." Sidney replied. D had this thing about making sure she paid for these treats. But Sidney didn't quite get it. You went and took artifacts and treasures from temples without paying. And this was the closest thing to a temple he had."Well, or a few other places.." Iden chuckled, but didn't elaborate. Since even imagining being bitten bothered her, D probably wouldn't want to hear. "Well, maybe so. I know he covers up some things, but damn if I know what they are." Well, D was getting a rather different view of Vlad, but maybe that was a good thing, since it..distressed some people. "Though I think he's anything but mellow, even on the inside." Iden took a moment to process Sidney's answer, then put a hand to her mouth. Uh-oh! Chocolate+Toby=not good. Though she didn't want to alarm Sid or hurt his feelings or anything. Rather calmly, she explained, "I'm afraid he shouldn't have chocolate, it might make him sick. A lot of dogs are allergic to it." To Toby, she clucked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. "Leave it, handsome. Please." In the time it took for the exchange, Toby had bitten off the corner and was chewing away at it, having a time with chewy bits getting stuck in his teeth. But it was duly chewed and swallowed in all its tastiness, and he looked up at Iden when she gave the command, forlorn. He really couldn't have anymore?D did look at her a bit strange though, raising an eyebrow, when she mentioned other places. What exactly did she mean? D could only imagine but decided maybe it was best not to ask. If Iden and this vampire guy were living together and he was biting her, who knew what else they might get up too. Probably was rather personal. "Is he gentle about it? I mean, I have.. uh heard they can sort of hypnotise you. So you don't feel a thing. Well some types I think. Anyway, maybe not mellow but sensitive or something? You know, a reason to act defensively? You did say he wanted to make you safer. That could be considered a sort of - Oh Sid! Careful. Iden's right, dogs and chocolate don't do so well together..."
D sat up straighter and looked over to their small charges. She was impressed by Iden's calm manner and that she didn't snap at Sid. Even when worried about the wellbeing of Toby. "Yeah, they're allergic. Better take it off him. He probably likes meats and things better, like you do."Sidney looked at them confused. Toby was allergic to chocolate? Well, Sidney wasn't keen on it himself, thought it was far too sweet for his tastes. But looking at Toby chewing on it, he didn't seem to not be enjoying it. Surely if it made him sick he wouldn't like eating it. What a strange dog!
"Ssorry Toby. You can't have it." Reluctantly he picked up the bar from the un-chewed end and headed over to Iden with it. "I don't know if you want the resst. He's ssslobbered on it. But why doess he eat it if it makess him ssick?" He turned back to the dog and gave him a helpless shrug. "We'll find you something else yeah? What about eggss? I like eggss. Although there'ss none around here."More personal areas hadn't really been what Iden was thinking about when she'd commented, but she caught D's look and realized it probably hadn't sounded terribly good. She grinned, embarrassed but amused. Iden's mind was rather prone to..going into the gutter, anyway. And then she heard D asking if he was 'gentle about it,' and she just couldn't help but snicker. "Oh, oh, sorry," she apologized, before answering, "Sometimes. Well, it's not so much not feeling a thing, as..well, something other than pain. Though there's still some of that as well, at least when he does it. Well, I'm not terribly sure what his reason to act defensively is, but..he does, that's for certain." "He's never had chocolate before, so he doesn't know it'll make him sick. He'll eat just about anything, so he always learns the hard way," Iden explained to Sidney. "Well, no slobbery chocolate for me, but I'm sure someone around my house'll eat it and not know the difference." She grinned. "Eggs?" Didn't she remember something about Sidney liking raw eggs? Eh, those wouldn't hurt. "Yeah, those he'd probably eat." Toby's ears drooped, and he sighed. Well, at least some was better than none, right? Maybe there'd be more food coming...even better food?Iden's talk was getting more vague and confusing as she continued. Something other than pain? What exactly was that supposed to mean? A swoon or something perhaps. Or perhaps not, considering the way Iden snickered at the comment. "Ah so it's not exactly painless?" D winced. "Well.... That's a shame. Maybe he doesn't have that skill. Some uh.. lines of vampires have different skills and powers. I certainly wouldn't be too willing if it meant feeling those ivory blades slicing into me." She gave another wince and shock it off with a sheepish smile. "At least you're made of tougher stuff than I am." She gave her a grin and ran a hand through her hair. Perhaps she was prodding a bit too much into the subject.
Looking down at Sid mentioning eggs, D gave him a nod. "Yeah, think of the things you like. He probably won't get sick on those. But I doubt they have raw chicken or eggs here. You'll have to invite him round and you two can have something to eat at home.""If he hassn't had it before, how do you know he will?" Sidney asks, sounded puzzled. "Or do all dogs get ssick from it? I know raw meat makess people ssick. But yeah!! Can Toby come round ssome time? Oh oh! The invitess! Don't forget to give him one!" As Sidney remembered the party invites he got more excited and turned around to motion to Toby. "Yeah, we can have raw eggss at the party!"Remembering the pieces of paper in her pocket when Sidney reminded her, D pulls them out and hands one to Iden. "Oh yeah, here. I'm organising a sort of belated birthday party for Sid. I feel bad for missing it on the actual day, I was away you see. But better late than never. And Sidney's happy enough that he's getting some friends coming over. It'll be at night. A camp-out style of thing. Is that ok?.... oh!" Remembering Iden's new aversion to sunlight, D gave her an embarrassed look. "I suppose a night-time party would be best in your book." sweatdrop "For all I know he does, and just..doesn't use it. I wouldn't be all that surprised, anyway. It would be pretty in line with...his way of things, I suppose is a way to put it. At any rate, I don't mind..maybe it's not so much being tough as just getting used to it." And in Iden's case..maybe getting to like it. She shrugged, pulling at her armwarmers. Then she looked up and looked at D questioningly, realizing something. "You seem to know at least a fair bit about vampires." "Well, now and then there are dogs who don't get sick from it, but most do, and the only way to really find out is if they get hold of some. But he didn't have much, so if he does react to it, it probably won't be anything much more than a tummyache. Head tilted curiously, she took the bit of her paper handed to her, then grinned. "A birthday party, huh? Camp-out sounds like something Toby might like, being a dog and all." The she chuckled, more amused by D's rememberance than anything. Iden usually did her best to keep a sense of humor about her situation. "Heheh, that does make it a bit easier." Though she could have had Toby's pard 'older sister' take him if it were during the day, that might have come off a little strange. Toby really didn't know quite what was being discussed, though he did catch his name and something to do with eating, and that was always at the top of his list. And with Sidney excited on top of it, Toby perked right up again, his tail getting back to wagging. But come to think of eating..what was that D had just given to Iden? Something tasty, maybe? He stared up at the invitation in Iden's hands, avidly curious."His way of things? Into a bit of pain huh? I'll refrain from any domination jokes, don't worry." D gave a little laugh. "And you're used to it? Well that's something. Some people don't mind getting used to injections. Diabetics and that. Just me with my phobia that makes me cringe about the idea of no, well, painkillers."
She gave a little laugh and looked down at the cushion. "Oh yeah well, I talked to Naraka about it and he gave me uh, a demonstration. Well, that was becase of a bit of a misunderstanding on my part. I mean, I just assumed it to be more of an attack and he got rather offended and offered to show me.""Yeah a camp-out! With all sortsss of thingss. We'll have a campfire and play sspotlight and all that sstuff." Sidney slithered over to Toby, who seemed keen and was looking at the invite from his spot on the floor. "Do you know how to play sspotlight? I can sshow you. It'ss just like hide and sseek but at night and with torchesss."That worked just fine to get Iden giggling again, no domination jokes required. For someone who could turn just about anything into something..muckier than intended, she wound up saying a lot of things that were perfect for someone else to do just that with and not realizing it. Not that those interpretations were wrong, though. She got over her little fit of giggles fairly quickly, but the grin stayed. "Oh, I see! A generous offer," she remarked teasingly, chuckling. She was actually a bit close to making some sort of comment in line with the..occasional dips they were taking in conversation, but didn't want to push things too far and risk really bothering D. With no offer of sampling the invitation forthcoming, Toby turned his attention back to Sidney when spoken to. He just wagged his tail, terribly pleased with his new friend, who was apparently as keen to play as he was. Hide and seek he knew, after a fashion...he played it with Tori. But the other velvet would probably be harder to find..the pard he regarded as his sister was rather large and brightly-colored, whereas Sid was small and camouflaged.Iden's laughing got a big grin out of D. Seemed she didn't mind D joking the topic. Certainly didn't seem shocked or offended in any case. Of course it didn't give D any indication that Iden liked getten bitten or that she might be onto something there...
"Generous? Oh yes, so he told me. It's kinda embarrassing actually. He's told some other vampire friend of his that I'm quite nice. And now he wants a sample too!" She smiled and shook her head, clutching the cushion more. "I don't know about that! I rather trust Nar, but I don't know much about this guy. Anyway, it's not something I make a habit of. Getting bitten I mean. I suppose if a vampire lived with you, it would be more common." She looked over at the new vampire near her.Sidney took his tail-wagging as a sign that yes, he wanted to play hide and seek and have Sid explain it to him. "Ok." He said. "Well what you do iss have everyone hide exsscept for one person. They have to find everyone elsse and then the firsst person they find isss the one who hass to sseek next time. I'll sshow you. Go hide and I'll count to ten before coming to find you.""Oh! That would be kind of..strange. Awkward." She chuckled, bemused. "Drac's one thing," comfortable, Iden slipped with her nickname for Vlad and continued without really realizing it, "But I think I'd be pretty leery of someone I didn't know, even if they were a friend of his." Maybe especially if they were. "I'm probably safe there, though." Toby listened attentively, taking a few moments to let the instructions settle in before setting off across the shop floor, looking around for a good hiding place."Awkward, yes that's a good description. But anyway, I don't have to worry about that. He lives overseas somewhere." D explained and then pondered out loud on Iden's friend's name. "Drac huh? Like after the character?" She didn't know he was actually real. "Although you never said what his name is. Is it Drac? I bet he gets annoyed when people compare him." She chuckled, imagining the sorts of things this guy might have to put up with. Jokes about girls in nightgowns and open bedroom balconies, oh boy! "Hmmm safe? His friends aren't close by either?"Sidney was careful not to watch the direction in which Toby ran. Instead he slithered over to the couch and leant his head against it, hands over his eyes. "One... two..." He began to count. It was the least he could do anyway, since snakes were quite good with scents. Although, unknown to Sid, dogs were as well."Drac's just what I call him, because..well, I did it to aggravate him, but it stuck and he's gotten used to it. His name's Vlad, really." She ducked her head, trying to decide whether or not to tell D that she was closer than she thought. Iden had rather learned her lesson about saying..it just wasn't the sort of thing people were inclined to believe. For the moment, she let it rest. "As far as I know, he's really only got one friend, and he's..not a vampire." Toby listened distantly to Sidney's counting while he searched for a place to hide. At last, he settled on one of the toyboxes and jumped up, heaving himself over the edge and in. Once there, he buried himself amongst the stuffed animals to wait.D chuckled when Iden admitted she had given the name Drac to this guy to annoy him. Ah well, he was apparently used to it now. "Oh I see!" She grinned. "Vlad? Yeah, that's a good vampire name.... although saying that, any name would be. I mean, th- you're still people." She didn't seem too phased by the fact Vlad's only friend wasn't a vampire. She simply assumed they were human then, like Iden had been. And that was common enough she felt. Naraka only had one vampire friend that she knew of, the rest were or had been human. "Well I guess with only one friend who's human, you don't have to worry about them trying to get a sample of your blood." She gave her a wink.".... nine... ten!!" Sidney stopped and looked up and all around. No sign of the dog could be seen.... but it could be smelt. Hmmm... yes, his unique velvety scent still hung in the air. It was just a matter of finding where it was coming from the strongest. Slithering along, he began to move past the shelves of plushes. Plenty of good hiding spots there but his flickering tongue couldn't find any evidence of Toby."Well, some people are better-suited to their names than others." Though her Vlad might well be part of the reason that name had become such a good 'vampire name' to begin with. The thought made Iden chuckle. "Oh..his friend might not be after blood...but well, he's not human either, never has been. He's fey, actually. And out for tastes of..other things." She wrinkled her nose distastefully. She was far from fond of Vlad's friend. Toby was careful to make sure his tail was in with the rest of him, since that waving up out of the toybox would be a fanatastic giveaway of where he was hiding. With all of himself safely tucked away, all there was left to do was wait.D nodded in agreement, bringing up her legs to curl them under her and just generally making herself comfortable. Names were... interesting things. Of course she always got the impression people grew into their names. Most of her friends she couldn't imagine the same if they suddenly decided to change their name. But then again there were alot of unsuitable names, things that sounded like part of a joke. Poor people. She smiled and looked down.
But as Iden went on to mention Vlad's friend she looked up and paid more attention. "A fey?" She looked confused. "You mean like a fairy or something?" She could guess what Iden was referring to by 'other tastes' though. Especially with that look of disgust on her face. D's eyes widened a bit and gave Iden a sympathetic look. "Oh! Right.... And I suppose he can't take a hint that you're not going to umm... Well, that you're not interested?"Sidney continued to slither along silently. Hmm... no not in the plushes on the shelves... elsewhere... He ducked right down on his belly and peered under the couches and desk. No sign of any paws there either so he had to be somewhere higher? Or in or behind something....
Keeping low so that he slithered along more like a real snake, with his hands moving to pull and grip at the floor as he moved, Sidney got into his real hunting mode. Mmm.... yes the scent was getting stronger.... he approached the box and could tell it was strongest here. Ah hah! But just for fun, he decided to give out a low hiss, just so his prey knew he was there, ready to spring!"Yeah, like a fairy, but nothing sparkly or pleasant or nice. He looks as much goat as person, really." Iden sighed. Puck really needed to lay off..not like that would ever happen. "I think he can take the hint, he just..doesn't. And he likes to aggravate people to begin with, anyway." Toby, hearing that hiss and knowing he was found, opted to turn the tables on his friend. Crouching down amongst the toys, he suddenly leapt out of the box, meaning to pounce on Sidney."Oh..." D replied a bit more slowly. "Goat huh? Like a satyr or something? Well!! I guess I understand now about our last conversation. How you were quite used to the more exotic customers, it makes alot more sense now. Ah well, he sounds like a bit of a jerk, if you don't mind me saying. Worse than not being able to see it when you're giving him a hint is to ignore it completely. Why would he think aggravating people is going to get him anywhere?" D tsked and shook her head.Sidney had all been set to coil up and make a lunge over the top of the box. But to suddenly find himself face to face with a pouncing dog was not what he was expecting! As such, his roll out of the way didn't happen fast enough and the dog landed on top of him. Instinctively Sid wrapped his tail around one of Toby's back paws and attempted to coil the rest of himself around him, but only in a playful way of course."Mm, a little close to a satyr in looks, I guess. There's a little..well, a lot more..goat to him than that. He's a phooka, specifically." She scratched her head, then nodded. "Yeah, I've gotten kinda used to..more 'exotic' people, as you put it. Even if I seem to run into the nasty ones mostly. I think he's the worst p***k I've ever met, honestly." Iden frowned. "He just..likes to aggravate people, and especially scare them. Not because he thinks it'll get him anywhere, it's just fun to him." Feeling something wrap around one of his hind paws, Toby suddenly stopped, bewildered, making it easy for Sid to coil around him. The dog was totally confused though, peering back at his paw and wondering what that could possibly be around it.A phooka, or what that was, didn't help much with D's mental picture of this guy. She had no clue what one of those was. But she simply nodded. A satyr with more goat in him. Well, she sorta had a picture. She also just assumed that she meant this phooka when she said she ran into the nastier sort of people, considering she had just called him a p***k.
"Ah." D said, watching Iden's face and mimicing her look of annoyance. "Does sound like creep. And an annoying one at that. Can't you tell Vlad? Seeing as he's his friend and all? Have words with him or something. Or are you two staying at your place? I just figured since you said he was living with you and not the other way around. Then you can just lock him out until he learns some manners."Taking the open opportunity as Toby paused in confusion, Sidney did get his strong body muscles up and around the dog. But both velvets were about the same size and so Sidney couldn't get completely wrapped around like he might do to a mouse or small bird. Instead he only managed to get looped around once, with his tail still around one paw and his head and shoulders up on the dog's back. "Ah ha!" He cried, thinking he'd conqured his playmate and giving him a mild squeeze. "Thought you could catch this great adventurer?"Iden shook her head. "Vlad knows, but isn't particularly concerned by it. As long as he's not stupid enough to do me any real harm and just keeps to his tricks, I doubt he'd do anything about it. As for..locking him out, I only have to deal with him when I go to a particular shop. So I just..don't go terribly often." Toby uttered a low, bewildered 'wroo,' trying to crane his head around to look at Sidney. He wasn't getting this at all. Feeling a bit..constrained, he gave himself a vigorous shake.D shook her head. "Sticks with his friend huh? Well I guess you could give him a good slap, now you've well, got some more punch to it. Or yeah, just avoid that shop when you can." She wasn't quite sure what to say, let alone advise. No one had ever given her such trouble. But yes, Iden was better equiped now to deal with it. Maybe that's what Vlad had in mind when he turned her?The snake gave a chuckling hiss at the dog's confused noise and continued to hold on. And it was a good thing too, because Toby decided it was time to try and shake him off. His hands came in useful for holding onto the fur on Toby's back, although it wasn't very long, but his natural reaction was to try and hold on with his coils, making it slightly tighter for the dog.
"Hold on Toby!" He cried, not wanting to hurt him but not wanting to get thrown off either. "Sstand sstill and I can get off.""Takes a bit more than a slap to phase him." She curled her lip, the motion baring fangs. But then she shook her head with a short laugh. "Well, you've probably heard quite a bit more than you wanted about the..men in my life." Toby laid his ears back, still rather confused, but did as Sidney said and stood still, even though the tighter coil was a bit off-putting.D paused, deciding perhaps not to make any more comments. Judging from that fang-baring sneer, it just got Iden more and more annoyed. Presumably with these two guys in her life, as she put it. But D didn't want to risk annoying her and getting her upset with herself. "Ah, yeah plenty." She gave a small smile at Iden little snort of laughter. "But it was alright. Gave me a good idea of what you have to put up with." She gave Iden a little nod. "Guess I'm very lucky in that area."As Toby relaxed and stood quite, Sidney loosened his grip and slide off, untangling his tail from the dog's leg last. "There you go. You alright? Didn't mean to ssqueeze you too hard but you were going to ssend me flying with all that ssshaking!"Iden wasn't annoyed with D by any means, but more or less in general at the situation she was in sometimes. Though it could be easy to confuse the two. She grinned sheepishly. "Sorry about that..I talk much too much, when someone manages to get me going." Then, though she was probably pushing it, but couldn't resist, she slipped in with an impish gleam in her eye, "Lucky in general in what you have to put up with, or in the men you have to put up with?" Toby gave his tail a faint wave before shaking again to get rid of that weird squeezed feeling. But that bit of chocolate was starting to set in, and with the pouncing and the squeezing and the shaking...he was beginning to feel a bit ill."No it's alright. I was curious, I must admit, about how you.." She waved a hand to indicate Iden's new appearance. "I'm glad you told me." D perked up when she saw the other girl's smile and gleaming eyes. Obviously she wasn't too offended or anything by D's proding. "Oh, well both I suppose." D answered. "I mean, I certainly don't have any one giving me trouble like that. No one I really have to avoid. So that's lucky. And I am pleased with the main guy I have to put up with, besides Sidney here of course." D grinned, sheepish. Even though Iden was now a blood-sucking, strong as steel creature of the night.... it felt as if they were just young girls gossiping away at school.Sidney slithered around to look at the dog's face once he had reached the floor. He tilted his head at him though, Toby looked a bit funny and that wave of his tail seemed alot less enthused as it did previously. "Hey? Toby?" He queried, looking a bit concerned. He had coiled around him tight enough to hold on, but not nearly enough to completely wind or hurt him, or at least Sidney assumed. Now he wasn't so sure. "Ummm.... do you want to ssit down? Or ssee Iden. You don't look ssoo good.""Ooh, really?" Iden giggled, feeling just the way D did about their talking away. Maybe she was eager for it, even. She didn't really get much 'girl talk.' Iden..yes, he wanted to go see Iden. Maybe she could fix it. So Toby gave Sid a further, brief wave of his tail then started to make his way over to women on the couch. Ooh, he didn't feel so good. He whimpered, looking really rather pitiful.Iden heard the dog's whimpering and looked over to see what might be the matter. She clucked her tongue against the roof of her mouth, scooping him gently up once he'd gotten close enough. "I think the chocolate's finally getting to him." "Yes really." D laughed out loud. "No fey or goat people or sleezeballs who don't understand the word 'no'. It's mostly just me and Sidney. Oh and there's my housemate, Elissa... and this other guy." She doesn't openingly expand on that part though, seeing as it was someone Iden knew.
Fortunatly for now, Toby provided a good distraction, even if it was at the poor dog's expense. "Oh Toby? You poor thing!" She looks at the dog. His pitiful puppy eyes doing their magic on her perfectly. "You need a hot water bottle or something to ease that poor tummy of your's."Sidney followed, climbing up the side of the couch as Iden picked up her velvet. "Iss he going to be alright?" Sidney hadn't really believed the thing about the chocolate. The dog have gobbled up what he could and had seemed fine afterwards. And if the dog hadn't known himself then Sid could hardly be blamed either.Iden left off, opting not to prod, since it seemed D didn't care to elaborate. She wasn't bothered by it, although it did make her rather more curious than before. But anyway, there were other things to worry about at the moment. She stroked Toby's side gently, smiling comfortingly as the little dog. "He should be alright," she informed Sidney, "He'll just have a bit of a rough night. I should probably get him home, though." Toby lay listlessly on Iden's lap, eyes half-closed. Ooh, his stomach hurt so bad. This was so not worth that chocolate stuff.D did wonder if Iden might have asked more if Toby wasn't feeling so well, or if she was being polite. She wouldn't have blamed her, after all the questions and discussing D did about Vlad and the phooka. But she didn't say anymore on the subject, instead turning her attention to the sickly-looking dog. "Yeah, an early night and a wam bed would be a good idea for him. What would you give a dog for an upset stomach? Grass? Oh no, that's cats..." While D did like dogs, her experience in caring specifically for them was rather limited.Sidney crawled up to Iden's side and looked at Toby's quietened form. Certainly not the bouncing enthusiastic dog he had been when he first arrived. "Ssorry Toby." He told him. "Neither of uss knew... You get better ssoon ok? Got to get better in time to come to our housse. I don't want you to misss out.""Grass goes for dogs, too." Iden nodded absently, then slid the invite D had given her earlier into her boot. "He should be fine by then, Sidney. I'm sure he'll be able to make it." Toby gave his tail a couple slow wags, and put on a faint doggie-grin for Sid. Iden would make it alright and he'd get better, oh yes.Iden smiled and stood, Toby cradled carefully in her arms. "Well, better get home then. It's been nice talking to you, D." With a nod, she headed out the door and started home.

That's what sisters are for...
Iden cradled Toby gently in her arms, shutting the door of the house with her foot before carrying the dog, who now and then whimpered faintly, into the living room. Distractedly, she shooed a few pooka and nyokiir off the couch, looking out the window at the gradually fading dark.
Forgetting entirely to sit down now that the couch was clear, she chewed at her lip. It was getting late; she'd have to sleep soon. Toby was hardly deathly ill, or at least she was pretty sure he wasn't, but..she didn't want to 'abandon' him when he was sick.
Rocking herself, and him, worriedly back and forth, she stroked his head with one cool hand. She couldn't even keep him warm...
And then, a brightly-colored figure uncurled itself, and Tori rose from her spot on the rug. The winged pard gazed up at her sick little brother with concern, and bumped her head against Iden's hip. "Give him to me, hanni. I will watch over him, and take care of him for us both."
Iden breathed an audible sigh of relief, smiling faintly. "Thank you, Tori."
"What is a sister for, if she cannot help the family she loves?" She moved now to the corner of the room, beckoning with her tail for the vampire to follow, and curled up on the large ottoman there, which was just the right size for a pard like herself. "Here. He will be fine with me."
Nodding slightly, she lay the little dog next to Tori and bent to give him a kiss on the forehead. "You'll be okay, babe. Tori's got you now." With that, and another grateful smile for Tori, Iden turned and went from the room, to escape the coming dawn in the basment.
Toby watched her leave through half-closed eyes, before slowly wriggling himself closer to his sister's comforting warmth, before he shut his eyes to the horrible feeling from within.
Moving one dark wing to shield him from any bright light that might disturb her brother's sleep, the mage began to croon softly. There were no words to her lullaby, only her voice, low and sweet and full of her love.
Go to sleep, Tobler, little brother. Sleep, and let your sickness go; you are safe with me, always. Her thought and will gave her song power and purpose, and with it she chased his sickness gently away.

While he slept, safe and warm under his sister's wing, Toby dreamt..more vividly than he ever had before. Not of tasty things, most certainly not of chocolate; not of adventuring heros; not of the books Iden read to him or the video games she played 'with' him; nor of any of the other things Toby had ever dreamt about before.
It was one of the strangest things in his short memory, and most certainly the strangest dream, good or bad, that he had ever had. And what made it strange was not its vividness, but how very...real it was, in the ordinary sense; in the sense that it could easily be something he was just..watching from the bottom of the basement steps.
It had started when Tori's music had, when he'd closed his eyes and just fallen asleep. His last coherent thought had been for his mother, whom he knew in his heart would have stayed with him if she'd been able. She'd been so worried, somehow helpless...and what he'd wanted, even more than for the sick-feeling inside him to go away, was for her to be okay.
And then, just as he'd fallen asleep, thinking such things, he found himself dreaming of being in his living room, just as Iden's booted steps thudded down the basement stairs. And so, because it was a dream and he couldn't get in trouble for what he did in dreams, he followed after her, slipping through the basement door just in time to escape it swinging shut on his tail (funny thing was, he'd thought it really would close on his tail, but he never felt it, so it must not have). Once through, he'd hopped his way down the steps without so much as a sound, coming finally to the bottom, where he now stood.
The thing was, although Toby didn't know it, he wasn't dreaming. Not really. Tori had, unintentionally and unknowingly, put him into some kind of trance. But so far as either of them knew, the little dog was just sleeping peacefully on the ottoman beside his sister. Which was not..quite the case.
With no lights on, and no outside source of light, the basement was inky dark; he couldn't see anything, but he could hear voices, easily recognizable as Vlad and Iden.
"You can stare at the ceiling all morning if you like, but by afternoon you will be no closer to seeing through it. Enough. Come here."
"What am I supposed to do, then? Nothing? Just..sleep?"
"Yes."
"Easy for you to say. You don't even care!"
"What, you expect me to care? What in your experience with me could possibly give you that idea?"
"I..I don't know. Maybe I did. Whatever it was, I should know better. I should know by now it's only yourself you care about."
"You should know better than to assume, girl! Tell me, why should I give a damn about that little dog of yours, when it clearly dislikes me?"
"Maybe if you made some kind of effort for once, if you gave him some sort of reason, he might start to warm up you."
"And get myself bitten in the process, because he thinks I'm a danger to you?"
"Maybe you are."
"Only 'maybe,' iubita?"
"I can't be sure of anything, with you."
"As it should be."
If anything further was said, Toby didn't hear it. Sleep, real sleep, tugged at him, and he answered its call. But he would remember the 'dream.'

A trip to Iden's house...and beyond? XD (Part 1)Quote: Iden had wandered her way to the Velvet shop with Toby in tow, since he'd made it clear, as best as he could, that that was where he wanted to go tonight. Smiling down at him, she opened the door for him to go in first before following. This time the little dog was leaving her shoestrings alone, at least for now. He was more interested in the sock he'd managed to make off with before leaving home. It was clean, thankfully..well, except for the dog drool, anyway. So, since he was busy carrying that around, the laces of Iden's boots were safe. Fully recovered from his bout with the chocolate bar, Toby was looking cheerful as he trotted inside.Funnily enough, D was already in the shop.... snoozing on one of the couches with her shoes kicked off on the floor and her socked feet curled under one of the cushions. She stirred however, when the bell on the shop door jingled with the arrival of Iden and Toby. She rubbed her eyes and blinked, before rolling up into a sitting position. "Oh.... Hey Iden." She greeted her, looking rather sheepish. Perhaps as if she had expected to see someone else? But she smiled almost instantly. "Fancy meeting you here. Oh and how's Toby? I hope he's feeling better now."Sidney peered out from under the couch where he had been resting too. He was far quicker to stir though than D and soon slithered and wriggled out to meet his pal. "Hey Toby!" He cried, going up to him and peering at the sock. "What have you brought? A ssack for treassure? Good idea!""Oh, hey D!" Iden smiled apologetically. "Sorry I woke you. Ah, Toby's fine. He's feeling much better, all up to stealing laundry again." She chuckled, looking down at the dog and shaking her head fondly. "So how have you and Sidney been?" Toby was elated to see his friend again, wagging his tail and wriggling excitedly. He lifted his head proudly at Sidney's approval of the sock, then set the 'treasure sack' down on the floor in front of him, whuffling a happy greeting.Dee waved off the apology with a smile. "No no, that's what I get for zonking out on a shop couch. Ah and stealing laundry huh? I know my caits love to sleep on top of the clean stuff, although they don't steal it as such." She looked at little Toby, the sock looking quite big in relation to his minature size. "Hey there kiddo, what you got?" She didn't expect much of a response, seeing as Sid was there with the dog.
"So Iden, how've you been? Come to get away from the guys at your place? We really should have a girl's night out sometime." She grinned and winked.Sidney nodded and coiled his tail a little, grinning and showing of his much smaller set of snake fangs ((even non-poisonous snakes have teeth, just alot smaller)). "Good to ssee you again. All better now?" The other velvet certainly looked it to Sid, which was a good sign. "Hey, you know what? We've got oursselvess a treassure ssack... now we just need to fill it! But not with any chocolatess, don't worry.""Toby'll sleep on it, chew it, bury it..just about anything. And he really loves dryer sheets, too, for some reason. Likes to tear them apart." She chuckled, rather used to one critter or another running off with something, laundry or otherwise. "I'm pretty good. Well, I think Toby wanted to come back and see Sid again. There wasn't much to do but watch Vlad train Cora, anyway. Aah, Cora's a horse," she clarified, then grinned. "Girl's night out, huh? Sounds like a plan! Got anything in mind?" Toby tilted his head a moment, listening, then picked up the treasure sock again. He knew just the sort of stuff to fill it with! Tail waving, he whuffed at Sidney through his mouthful of sock and trotted to the door, pawing at it and looking expectantly at the girls."Sounds like a real terror, that dog." D joked kindly. Oh I don't know, a night on the town? Down to the local nightclub? Although I much prefer more quiet things. Drinks at home and a movie, who knows. Sometimes it's fun to just relax and do nothing." She thought for a second. "we could you know, my roommate is out. Otherwise she'll start thinking I'm adopting vampires!" D remarked with a laugh.
"Hmm? You two like that idea huh?" She asked the velvets when she heard Toby stratching at the door and looking like he was indeed ready to go out for a bit.Sidney followed after, looking at Toby and then at the door and then back again. "What'ss up? Want to go hunting out there? Well, there iss more to explore and find. But I don't know if we're allowed... D let'ss me go around on my own at home, but I've never done it here in town..... Of coursse, that sshouldn't stop a great pair of explorerss like usss!!""Yeah, usually I'm not one for going out out, either. I kind of..partied myself out a long time ago." Iden gave a rueful half-smile, shaking her head. "Ooh, that sounds like a lovely idea..there's even my place, if you don't mind a bunch of four-footers," she offered, then looked curiously at D. "Oh? You have vampires over often?" "Huh, I guess going out's gone over as a good idea all around." She laughed, leaning back against the doorframe. "Shall we, then? To wherever we decide we're off to." Toby bounced up and down on his forepaws, terribly excited. An adventure! Now if Iden would just hurry up and open the door, they could go and he could show Sidney some prime spots for finding neat things. Although it didn't occur to him the they might have different standards of 'neat.'"Well... I think it's more because I live out a fair way in the country. The city does feel rather busy, and the clubs are simply too packed! Not to mention I can't dance to save my life." D laughed. "Nah, I like evenings in where you can talk and do things you like in the comfort of your own home. Or walks. Walks are nice. Especially when you have good company and good weather."
D pondered, thinking she wouldn't mind visiting Iden's place at all. "Well... since you'll be coming round to mine for Sid's party, maybe we should take turns. Oh but only if you're offering. I don't mind four-footers at all, I have a few running around my place." She replied to Iden's suggestion and then mused over her last question with a slight blush. "Well... not alot of them. Just Naraka really. Invited him over a couple of times. Ah but let's go while the night's young eh?" She stood up quickly and pulled on her shoes. "You lead the way." She grinned.Listening with half an ear to Iden and D's talk, Sidney perked up. A trip to Toby's house? Well, he couldn't show the other velvet around his own house in that case, although he would get the chance another time. And some place new was always exciting to explore. "Yess! let'ss go! Toby wantss to go too. We're going to go treassure hunting.""I grew up in the country, but we managed rather well for ourselves." Iden grinned crookedly, chuckling. "It is nice to just be comfortable, with people you're comfortable with." "Taking turns sounds like splended logic to me." She nodded, pushing open the door and heading out, but holding it open for D and the velvets. She didn't catch D's blush at her question, but the switch in subject made her a little curious. "Naraka, huh? I think I had a few too many critters for his liking." "Treasure hunting?" Iden laughed. "I don't know what you'll find in my house, but maybe Toby knows about something I don't. Toby whuffed excitedly despite his mouthful of sock, trotting outside when the door was opened and heading right off down the sidewalk towards home. He stopped several yards out though, as it occurred to him that he should probably wait up for everyone else."Well... I'll have to give a personal tour of my place sometime other than the party." D nodded a thanks to Iden and stepped outside where she began to explain. "Mum bought it to run a B&B and now it's very useful for running my cait breeding from. A few stalls and plenty of room." She didn't quite understand what Iden's crooked smile was about though.
As she walked, she gave a funny sort of thinking-look when Iden mentioned Nar thought she had too many animals around. "Oh, he's been to visit you?" She sounded a little curious about that. "Oh well, yeah I know he likes the peace and quiet and my place is pretty good for that. So I asked if he wanted to visit." She smiled, a little more sheepishly than usual. "That and he's a good friend.""Oh treassure can be all ssortss of thingss." Sidney explained to Iden. "And I reckon Toby knowss a few thingss. He'ss very exsscited anyway!" Seeing the dog in question was getting ahead of them he called for him to wait up and quickly slithered after him."Oh? A lot of the reason I moved was so there'd be more room for all the animals I've got hanging around. That and a lady I knew wanted help with her siirae, so this way I'm close and don't have to bother running back and forth all the time to do that. It's just easier all around." "I think I had him kind of curious about where I lived, so I offered to show him. Though it really wasn't anything out of the ordinary, aside from all the critters." Iden shrugged as she walked, looking curious about D's sheepish smile. She seemed rather strange about the subject in general. Well, maybe Iden was just reading too much into it. "I haven't known him for all that long, but..he's been a very good friend to me, too." Once Sidney had caught up, Toby set off again, seemingly quite intent on their destination. He really was excited about this. He'd never had anyone over at his house before!"A Siirae?" D asked, not ever having heard of such a thing. From the sound of it, it was an animal of some sort. Possibly a big one, due to it living out in the open country. "Well that does sound easier for everyone."
D gave a warmer smile as Iden talked. "Oh I see. Well it's good to hear. Much better to have a friend than an enemy. And it's never too much trouble having one more. I'm glad. Hmmm... I've known him for, let's see, about a year now I think.""Hey Toby!" As fast as Sid could move, it wasn't as fast as the four-legged creature. "Wait up, we'll get there. Otherwisse I'm gonna have to climb on you again." He laughed. That would slow the dog down!"Well, siira if it's just one. But they're, um..really pretty weird. Sort of horse, sort of dog, and undead on top of it. To be honest, I don't want to know where they came from in the first place." Iden thought for a moment. "I've known him for..less than half a year, I guess. Four months, five months? Something like that. I'm afraid it's been a few since I last saw him, though," she admitted, sounding a bit sad about it. Toby waited obediently, if a bit impatiently. Once Sid had caught up again, he made sure to go at a pace better suited to his slithering friend.Walking beside Iden and following her lead, D's eyes went wide at the description of a Siira. "An undead dog-horse....?! No no... I think you're right in not wanting to know where they come from. I also think you're pretty brave helping with one. They sound rather... well, kinda scary."
"Ah well, that's still fairly long. And now... being well, of the undying nature, I guess you'll have plenty more oppertunities. I'm sorry you've not seen him recently. He was well last time I saw him." She gives Iden a little smile, hoping that was some comfort. "Does he know... that you've changed?"Sidney followed along, seeing as Toby knew the way and he didn't. Conversation was a bit hard. What did you ask? What his house was like? What should they do when they get there? None of that could easily be answered until they got there anyway, seeing as the dog could only bark and bounce around. It wasn't a very descriptive form of communication. Nevertheless Sidney tried some easier yes/no queries.
"Sso Toby, is your housse big?" He asked waiting for a response before carrying on. "There lots of other animalss there? D hass ssome. And then there'ss mice and birdss but they not like petss. Make pretty practice subjectss though." He laughed. "For my hypnotisssing.""They're not so bad, really." Iden shrugged. "Well, they can be, but mostly they'll listen to me. And they can't hypnotize me if they try. It's why she wanted me to help with them, you see." "That's good to know," she said sincerely, smiling a little. Then she shook her head. "No. I haven't seen him since before it happened. So he doesn't know." Iden bit her lip. Toby gave a low wroo in response to both questions, trying his best approximation of a nod. In truth his house wasn't anything much more than average size, really, but having lived in an apartment prior, the house was big in his estimation. And there were certainly a lot of animals, big ones and small ones and flying ones and all sorts. And some of the pooka tasted quite nice, though he wasn't supposed to eat those. But he did lick them now and then when Iden wasn't looking."Ah right, part of the new deal huh?" D nodded at her. Really, it did have it's benefits but D was still unsure about how to talk about it. Nar was so used to being a vamp he didn't miss human things. Iden was only recent...
"Oh... well, I'm sure he's not going to umm... well, get angry or anything." D offered, seeing as Iden looked rather worried by the fact he didn't know. Was she worried of what he might think? "But, don't worry, I won't say anything to him... if I see him first."Sidney caught on to Toby's body language, even if his sound wasn't very comfirmative and guessed he meant yes to his queries. "Ah cool, lotss to explore then. And thingsss to find. Ssay, any of the animalss dangerouss? Like real templete guardianss or wild undisscovered ss-spp-sspecisss?" That would be really exciting!!"Yeah," Iden confirmed with a nod. "I can't outright control them or anything, but I guess you could say they recognize me as dominant. Most of them don't really give me any trouble." Talking about these sorts of things didn't seem to bother her; what was the sense of avoiding the subject, after all, when there were other, less pleasant and pretty much constant reminders of her situation? Iden sighed, scratching her head. "It's not that I think he'd like..chase me off or something, I just...don't want to upset him, y'know?" After a few moments of thought, Toby made the same affirmative response as before. Tor'en was definitely something of a hazard; they'd already gotten into it a couple of times. Those siirae things were bad news, too, although they weren't really at his house. And then there was one of the kyds, Malmoren, who wasn't really dangerous, just mean. He wasn't sure if Vlad counted. The vampire had never offered him any real harm, but he was certainly dangerous, and had a threatening sort of presence. The little dog considered this as they turned onto the street his house was on."Dominent huh? Like being more in command?" D smiled a little and looked her up and down. "Yeah, just something about it I guess. Aura or some such. Animals pick up on it better than people do."
"As for Nar, I really don't think he'd chase you off!" D exclaimed. "But umm, yeah... it might upset him. It's not.. it's not something he'd wish on another person who didn't want it."Sidney didn't know they were getting close but he got more excited by the answer from the dog. There were dangerous creatures there! That made the adventure more realistic. Plus it was always interesting discovering new things, whether they're countries or places or animals or objects."Yeah, something like that. And I think they understand that messing with me might not be a good idea." Iden chuckled. "I think animals are about the only things I intimidate." "I wish there were some way of going about it that wouldn't upset him, but there's really no way of avoiding it." She ran her hand back through her hair. "I think that's part of the reason I didn't really come around the shop for awhile...as much as I want to see him, I'm afraid of upsetting him. I seem to have a bit of a knack for doing that." The little street they were on wasn't anything particularly exciting, just lined with nice little houses with mostly well-kept little yards. Except for the one Toby made for, which was pale blue and had a dying garden out front. If Sid or D looked closely enough, they could probably catch glimpses of little eyes peering out of the dry bushes, and things moving amongst the wilted flowers.
Toby started down the little path up to the door, lined on both sides by dusty flowerbeds. With a pair of vampires the only residents of the house that were even capable of gardening...gardening clearly didn't get done."Oh I don't know. I'm sure if you wanted to appear scary or threatening you could do it. You've got the equipment to back it up now." D grinned. Normally she wouldn't joke about something like that. Especially not to someone like LP what with her fondness for deadly weapons. Iden however, D felt would take it just as the joking around that it was intended for.
She didn't know how to go about breaking the news to Nar without getting him upset. But it might not be soo bad. Wasn't like she was really hurt. Nor had she been turned into anything terrible or hideous. "Well... I suppose he'll find out sometime. Try not to worry too much. You did said he was a friend. He'll understand eventually, even if it does upset him at first." D tried to comfort, as she followed the two velvets up to the house. She took note of the nonexistent garden but didn't notice any of th eyes watching them.Sidney did though and he tensed his coils as he slithered along after Toby, watching the bushes and shadows. If any monsters came at them now he'd be ready!! Well, if they were small enough. There was always his power too. "Thiss the placsse? Lookss pretty wild!"Iden bared her fangs and growled at D in pretend aggression, but made it look rather silly and overdone, then laughed. "Still, I don't think I'll ever be as intimidating as Vlad or even Nar could be. I'm too short." Iden nodded, feeling a little better. "I'll try not to. I need to just stop overthinking it, I guess." Toby sniffed carefully as they approached the door, trying to figure out which of the household critters were lurking around in the struggling flora. They were just pooka mostly, rabbit-sized and of many colors and patterns, none of them dangerous or anything. Nothing to worry about there.Although a little squirrel pooka skittered out of a bush and up onto the porch railing to peer down at the visitors with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity, chittering noisily. A couple others poked out to see what was up, wiggling their huge ears and eyeing the strangers. ( http://www.lionking.org/~sabarika/Forums/Meep/Pets/pookasquirrel.gif , http://www.lionking.org/~sabarika/Forums/Meep/Pets/pookamint.jpg , http://www.lionking.org/~sabarika/Forums/Meep/Pets/pookaearth.gif ) A funny goat-like creature peeked around the side of the house, clearly very suspicious about the whole affair. His torn headwings laid back, he just watched, uneasy. ( http://www.lionking.org/~sabarika/forums/meep/pets/rhovan.jpg ) On the short side herself, D had to grin along. "Oh those big folk should learn not to underestimate us." She chuckled. "Of course, being intimidating isn't something I'd try to be myself. Just not.. how I feel." Iden's feigned agressive expression wasn't so bad really, had it not been for the smile behind it really and then the laugh after. D found herself wondering if there was much change of nature from when she had met Iden before, as a human. Still seemed the friendly, joking sort, even with the extra long teeth.
As they wandered up the path, a few creatures made their appearance. D gave a slight start at the sudden chittering of what D could only decribe as a sort of mousey-looking squirrel. Looking to see what it was, D had just started to smile when a couple more mousey-fawn things popped up from the undergrowth. "Oh! Hey!" She seemed to light up with curiousity as she spied yet another, much larger creature peering at them too. "These the pets you mentioned?"When the sqirrel pooka made it's entrance, Sidney paused to look, leaving him off-guard when the other two pooka appeared. At their rustling sound he spun around, coiling up with his tail slightly to make himself look a bit taller. Ah! The natives were ready to pounce on them hmm?! Stealing a glance at Toby he noticed the dog wasn't at all worried about them though. Perhaps the natives were friendly. "Hello." He nodded at them, only playing because he guessed they wouldn't be able to talk, like D's caits. "Fear not, we are peassceful explorerss.""I don't really like the idea of intimidating people, but I guess it's the sort of thing that could come in handy, y'know? Self-defense or something. Not the kind of thing I'd do for fun, I don't think." Iden nodded, chuckling. "The little mousey ones are pooka. I stopped trying to keep count of them awhile ago, but I'd say there are something like three dozen hanging around." Glancing over at the goat-creature, she continued, "That's Rhovan, he's a shay. He's not really used to people, so that's probably as close as he'll get. I've got four others where he came from, but I don't think they're all around just now." While the velvets greeted the 'natives,' Iden stepped around them to open the door. With all the animals she had, she never bothered to lock it, so she just opened it right up...except it stopped with a thud about a quarter of the way open, prompting Iden to wrinkle her nose, ask whatever was blocking the door "Mal, could you not sleep in front of the door?" and just push harder until something inside snorted and moved out of the way. Meanwhile, there was another rustle in the scrubby bushes, and another pooka toddled out. This one was a bit bigger than the others, with a long fluffy tail and cloven hooves in place of forepaws, as well as little antlerbuds on its head. Tilting his head, Ritlaloc looked Sidney over for a moment. "Explorerss?" he asked curiously, testing out Sid's funny s's, "Are you looking for ssomething shiny?"( http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/Alassein/ri.gif ) Toby whuffled a brief greeting at his housemate and 'brother' before sidling up to the mint pooka, which by now had taken a few steps closer and was inspecting Sidney with nose wiggling and ears cast forward. Since it was preoccuppied, Toby took the opportunity to pounce, pinning it underneath him so that he could give it a good licking. Mmm, he just loved these yummy ones. >3"Yeah self defence is ok. For fun.... maybe sometimes." D grinned and winked. "Just when you're only really joking though. Doing it to give someone a deserved scare." She chuckled.
She stayed a little behind Iden, looking over the creatures that were inspecting the visitors. "3 dozen? Oh my. Lost track huh? Seems like your home has become a sort of habit for them." She mused. They were rather cute and she liked the way their big ears would swivel around at every sound. It was surprising to hear one speak however and while Iden struggled with the door and whatever was behind it, she blinked at the pooka talking to Sid. "Oh! Hi. I didn't know you.... spoke." Somehow she felt it'd be rude to say 'intelligible'. D felt most animals were anyway, just in their own way though, not like how people defined it.
Glancing up at Iden, she saw she'd managed to open the door and so D followed her. Sidney would probably join them shortly anyway and besides, Toby was there so she doubted they were in any danger to be left in the front garden.Sidney glanced around as the pooka crept closer. He wasn't frightened but it wasn't such a good idea to let yourself get surrounded by the whole tribe... And then one spoke! Sidney wasn't as surprised as D was, he talked and seemed pretty animal-like himself after all. "Ah hi. You musst be the leader of thiss tribe. Yess, Toby and I are explorerss. We umm, go on adventuress and find thingss too. Sshiny things? Yeah ssure, thosse are the best oness. Well, bessides the edible oness."
At that moment, just as one of the funny smelling pooka started to close in on Sid, Toby came to his rescue! Pouncing on the native and holding him down so Sidney wasn't completely trapped. The licking he just assumed went with the 'being a dog' thing. "Nice one Toby! I can count on you to watch my back." He grinned and nodded."They're easy to lose track of. Since they're small and don't usually stay very still. I really don't know how I've ended up with so many, I guess they just kind of collect after awhile. Like dust or something." Iden chuckled. "Aah, most pooka don't talk, but Ri there's a sort of a different kind than most." Since Toby and Sid were still outside, she just left the door open after she stepped inside, motioning for D to come in. There wasn't anything exceptional about Iden's living room, it just had the usual sorts of things in it: a couch, a couple of comfy chairs, a coffee table, a TV...well, there was a spear leaning against the wall in one corner of the room, but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary. Although there were some more animals in here, including a few more pooka and a cat-sized sort of hippogryph ( http://www.lionking.org/~sabarika/forums/meep/pets/sefer.gif ), as well as the critter guilty of blocking the door. A smaller goat-ish creature of a different sort than the one outside, Malmoren gave D and Iden both a rather nasty glare before slinking out of the room and down the adjacent hallway. ( http://www.lionking.org/~sabarika/forums/meep/pets/malmoren.jpg ) "Hullo there, lady," Ri returned D's greeting distractedly, and a bit belatedly. She wasn't nearly as interesting as this talking snake..thing.
"I'm shiny," he felt compelled to note, proud of his golden hooves and budding antlers. "Toby's not an explorer," the pooka also felt compelled to point out, "He just lives here. Why would he explore his own house? What tribe?" Ri cast a glance around, hoping to see some hooting, feather-bedecked people stomping around, and was sorely disappointed. "I don't see a tribe. You find tasty things while you explore? Like cookies down between the couch cushions?" Toby wagged his tail in acknowledgement of Sidney's praise, looking up to give him a big doggy grin before going back to licking the mewling mint pooka. The poor little thing didn't look frightened, just very unhappy. While he went about his pestering, he glared at Ri. He was TOO an explorer!D laughed. "Like dust? Oh I'm sure you wouldn't want to lose any n the vacuum though." She did find it a little strange that Iden didn't know how many she had. D knew all her own pets and keep good track of her caits as well as other's that came for lodging or breeding. But then again it was her business, she figured. At Iden explaination of the talking pooka, D just nodded and followed her inside at her beaconing. The creature looked like it was more interested in the velvets anyway.
Looking around, D took in the creatures first. Watching the one who'd been behind the door slink away with a disgusted look at having been moved she decided not to ask. Instead she glanced over at the rather tiny gryphon. "Oh!" She cried, with some recognition. "Is this the one you mentioned before, in the shop. Umm, the one who gave you a couple of scratches." She lowered her voice as she said the last bit, not sure if this creature could talk and understand english too.
The house's other contents seemed pretty normal although her ornamental spear might look better mounted on the wall. It looked like a pretty nice relic.Sidney flickered his tongue a bit as he thought over what this tribe leader was saying. "Yess, you are. Musst be a very wealthy tribe leader then. Because you're the tribe. Well you and the otherss." He motioned to the couple of other pookas that were about and the unfortunate victim of Toby's licking. "And cookiess are the native food? Well, they're okay, a bit dry. You find tassty treassures in the cupboard ussually. Or when D'ss cooking."
"And ssure Toby'ss an explorer. He'ss being my guide here though, becausse he knowss the ter-terrain. And umm... he can help sstop any ambushess." He grinned and nodded at the hapless pooka and the hungry-looking dog. "Hey Toby, I think it'ss ok now.""I had one get itself stuck in the vacuum cleaner bag once." Iden laughed. "But not while I was vacuuming, it worked its way in there on its own. And it was one of the wet sort, so all the dirt and dust and things got stuck to it and made it look like a real dustbunny." "Oh, that's Sefer. He's not the one who scratches, but he is a nyokii." She nodded, while Sefer, noticing the attention, roused himself from his nap on the back of the couch and stood, craning his head towards D with a light trill. "I've got six others, the mean one included. Tor'en stays in the closet for the most part, though, so he's nothing to worry about." "Oh, right. Of course we're the tribe." He'd known that, really he had. "That's what milk's for, to go with cookies. Then they're not dry. Especially if you mash them up in the milk." Ri nodded sagely, licking his lips. Mmm, that always sounded so good. "What's a Dee?"
"Toby's a good guide," he approved. "He doesn't get lost like Iden."With a heavy sigh, Toby let the pooka up to skitter off back into a bush. But the disappointment of having to release his tasty prize was quickly forgotten. He could stop ambushes! He was happy to be so helpful, and was soon grinning again, tail wagging.D didn't realise when Iden meant 'wet one' that the pooka was always damp, just that he happened to be at the time of wriggling into the vaccuum. She laughed all the same. "Oh dear! I know Sidney used to love getting into pipes and things. I think it was after I read him The Chamer of Secrets. You know, Harry Potter. But ergh! I bet he needed a bath after that!"
At the sound of the trill, D did her own little imitation, hoping to encourage the gryphon over for a closer look. She really hadn't seen anything like it... and fortunatly this wasn't the antisocial one."With milk huh? Isss that ssome local cusstom? Well perhaps after our adventure we sshall return to feasst with you." Sidney nodded. "Oh and D is that lady that jusst went in. Sshe'sss my carer. And yess, Toby'ss a good friend and guide." He looked over at the dog who seemed ready for anything. "Sso shall we start our adventure? Where sshall we go?""Oh man, I can just imagine that. That would be really weird, something coming up the sink drain." Iden laughed. "Oh, did he ever! He cleaned up pretty well, though, really just had to soak him in the sink. Not that he minded, he just thought that was fun." Sefer flicked his tail and trundled across the back of the couch, then hopped down onto a sidetable that put him closer to the two women, forehooves clopping lightly on the wood. Ears thrown forward, he gave another trill. Iden smiled brightly. "We could sit down, if you want? I'm sure he'd be happy to sit with us and get a few scritches." "Only proper way to eat cookies," Ri confirmed, nodding. "We could have a..a successful-adventure feast. Kind of a victory feast." He nodded again, this time more to himself, before trotting back into the bushes with a "Later!"Toby gave another wag of his tail before hopping up the porch steps, waiting for Sid at the top. He'd had plenty of time to think about it on the way over, and he'd decided he was going to take his friend down to the basement. He wasn't really supposed to go down there, but that's where all the good stuff was! Besides, this was supposed to be an adventure, right?"Alot of the time I think I'd just catch sight of his tail disappearing down them." D laughed. "That was quite a scare the first time. Thought he'd get stuck, you know? I was close to calling a plumber and having the whole sink dismantled, but fortunatly he made his own way out quickly enough."
"Part of the fun? I'm sure they all think that when they only cause us worry and trouble." Though D was grinning as she said it, obviously thinking back on these little mishaps with fondness. "Hmm? Oh yes, thanks." D took a seat on the couch as Iden offered it. Stretching out a hand carefully towards the little creature, she gave it time to come and sniff her and decide if he wanted to come greet her." Hey ya..." She cooed at him."Exsscellent!" Sidney exclaimed. A feast put on by the native tribe. Maybe if Toby and he found a treasure for him they'd be made guests of honor! "We will return!" He proclaimed as the pooka wandered off again and So did Toby. Quickly heading after him, Sid slithered up the steps and peered in the door. He could see D and Iden sitting, preoccupying some sort of animal that looked like a cross between Wellard and one of D's caits. (Wellard is a chocobo that D owns. sweatdrop From when I ran my own shop on Gaia) "Lead the way brave Toby!""That would be a scare! And a strange thing to have to explain to the plumber." Iden laughed, sitting down on the couch as well. "I guess maybe that's part of the fun, getting everyone else worked up about it." She shook her head, grinning. "But however much trouble they were, at least those sorts of things are funny to look back on." Sefer hopped back onto the sofa, this time onto the arm. Balancing there, he sniffed at D's offered hand, tail flicking thoughtfully behind him. Apparently satisfied, he whistled softly and nudged her hand. Toby beamed another doggy grin at Sid before heading in. Once inside the door, he turned to the left right away, slinking along the wall and glancing every now and then at the two women, and at Sidney to make sure he was following. He was headed for the hall Mal had gone down, and the cracked-open basement door. He was trying to get to the hallway without being seen, so Iden wouldn't guess what they were about.

A trip to Iden's house...and beyond? (Part 2)Quote: Getting the 'ok' signal from the little gryphon, D went about gently scratching at it's head and neck, enjoying the feeling of the soft feathers and fur. "What was his name again? Sefer? He's very cute."
"Oh and yes, I don't know what I would have said to the plumber. I don't think they'd be thrilled with the thought of retrieving a snake!" D chuckled. "Mmm... and maybe it is. I've met some pets and people that enjoy causing trouble. Making others worried and that is the best bit for them. But with Sid I think it's more that he's so sure he can take care of himself. He doesn't expect me or others to worry about him because he's such a 'Great Explorer'." D grinned over at Iden, completely missing the two sneaking velvets go past. "How about Toby? How are you coping with him?"Sidney followed him, pausing to check D and Iden weren't looking when it appeared this was going to be a secret adventure. At least, that's what he gathered from Toby's quiet creeping. Sidney did the same, keeping low on his belly he slid along close to the wall. Oooo.... secret adventures were the best!!"Mm-hm, Sefer. It's the name for an Egyptian, umm..variety of gryphon, pretty much." Iden smiled fondly at the little nyokii, who had started to purr and lean into D's scratching. "I've had him for a long time. He's a very good friend." "Heheh, I seem to wind up with the ones who like to make trouble mostly. Well, Toby doesn't, at least. He's very considerate, actually. I think he might worry about me even more than I worry about him. He's rather sweet, and I think he fancies himself as a sort of protector." She chuckled, shaking her head. Iden didn't notice the adventuring pair, either. "He doesn't always get on so well with Vlad, though, and I think that might have something to do with it somehow." Once they were in the hallway and out of the girls' line of sight, Toby relaxed, though he still made sure to move quietly. Now confident that they wouldn't be stopped, he turned to Sid and wagged his tail before nudging the basement door open just a bit further, enough that they could squeeze through."Egyptian huh? I like it." D nodded, glancing back at Sefer when he began to purr. She didn't know they could do that but it delighted her all the same. "Heehee, you like that huh?"
"Oh dear, poor Iden with a pack of trouble-makers. That doesn't sound good. At least Toby's not trouble. A protector huh? That is very sweet. I bet he just likes you so much. The other day, when he wasn't well, I noticed he came straight up to you for comfort." D smiled. "But he doesn't like Vlad you say? Hmm... could it be jealousy? Or just that he feels you need protecting from him?" D knew her own housemate could be overprotective when it came to D's male friends, so she assumed it was similar with Toby.Sidney kept up his silence until they were out of sight of the humans. When they reached the basement door he sat up on his tail and flickered his tongue curiously. "Down there huh?" He asked Toby when the dog pushed the door open more and slipped through. Sidney wasn't the least bit afraid of the dark but he was still curious as to what they might find down there. D's cellar only had bottles in it and wasn't particularly interesting. But maybe Toby's was better. "Alright, let'ss go check out thiss cave...."Sefer clacked his beak, well-pleased, and settled himself on the arm of the sofa. Might as well get comfortable. "I hope I haven't made him too dependent or anything. I did hold and fuss on him a lot when he was a plush; do you think things that happened then have something to do with the way they turn out?" Iden asked curiously. She'd been wondering that for awhile. "I think he feels he needs to protect me from him. I don't know if it would occur to Toby to be jealous." The basement wasn't quite pitch black; what with the light coming in through the partly-open door, the stairs were at least lit just enough that they wouldn't wind up falling down them. Casting one more glance back at Sid, Toby started to hop his way slowly down the steps. They were carpeted, fortunately, so he didn't have to worry about his claws clicking and maybe giving them away.Making herself comfortable, D absently petted and scratched at Sefer while looking over at Iden. "Weelll... maybe he's just not keen on him. Or doesn't like that fact he... turned you." She said cautiously. Who knew why Toby might not like someone. He seemed so happy every time D saw him. But perhaps if he were really over protective he might not like the fact Iden'd been changed.
"As for when they're plushies... well, I think they might. I mean, I read Harry Potter to him as a plush and now he loves his slytherin scarf. And the night before he came alive we were watching a bit of Indiana Jones... and well, you can see the sort of adventurer he's turned out like. But cuddling and fussing I wouldn't worry about. I mean, he doesn't seem too dependant, just enjoys company. I wouldn't worry." D smiled at her.Slipping down each step after the minature canine, Sidney's reptilian eyes looked around. He couldn't see much yet, not until he got used to the dim after the light from the hall. "What do you think'ss down here Toby?" He asked, wondering if perhaps he should have brought his little whip along with him.Sefer let out a contented sigh and closed his eyes, tuning out the noise of the women's voices as Iden made her reply. "I'm not sure. Maybe it's some sort of animal sense, I don't know..but most of the animals don't seem to mind him. Do you think maybe that's it, that he turned me? It did happen before he came alive." She tilted her head, thinking. "Maybe that's got something to do with why he's protective..things from when he was a plush, I mean. I play an awful lot of games and watch a lot of movies that have heroes in them." Iden laughed. "Maybe he thinks I need saving." Toby continued on until they reached the bottom of the stairs, growing steadily more excited. He really would have liked to tell Sid what was down here, but the only way he had of doing that was showing him. But ooh, there was such wonderful stuff! Clothes on the floor just waiting to be slept on or carried off, and shoes to be chewed. And there were shinies that Iden wore, including some he'd learned weren't good for chewing, since they were spiky and a bit sharp, and hurt the roof of his mouth. And ohh, such nice fluffy pillows that were just excellent for tearing the stuffing and feathers out of. There were all sorts of assorted, mysterious things around, too.
The dim basement was rather large, not carpeted but with rugs (mm, such lovely fringe on those!) here and there on the otherwise concrete floor. It was quite cluttered, too, from the clothes on the floor that Toby was quite fond of, to the unpacked cardboard boxes still left from when they'd moved. There was furniture, a big dark dresser with an oval mirror over it aainst one wall, and a bed over in one of the far corners. It was hard to make out much of anything over there, though."Did it? Well if events and actions do affect them while they're still plusies, then that could well be the case. I personally believe they do. There's too many similarities between how Sid is now and what he likes to what I showed him when he still just made of fluff. I'd say then that it'd be the same with Toby too."
D grinned. "Well, nothing wrong with heros. And wanting to save you has to be better than wanting to cause trouble for you. No no, I think he'll be fine."Slowly but surely Sid's eyes grew used to the darkness down here and he gazed about from his perch on the second last step. Woah! This room was brimming with stuff! He glanced at Toby as he ran down the steps, his tail wagging enthusiastically. Yep, definatly a treasure trove!
"Thisss iss great!" He exclaimed as he slithered down the last couple of steps to the floor. "Look at all thiss sstuff. A bed and mirror? What do you think it iss? Ssomething's lair? Or a tomb perhapss?" He moved over and examined the rugs. "Flying oness no doubt. They'd be good for an esscape if the tomb'ss keeper comes back.... but let'ss have a look around while they're gone eh?" Sidney grinned and poked around the clothes scattered about on the floor."I'm glad to know I wasn't reading too much into things, thinking like that. I know he's still an animal yet, not a kid like Sidney, but there are still things about him that have made me wonder if what happened while he was a plush affected him somehow." Iden nodded, smiling and satisfied. It made a certain amount of sense, then, that Toby didn't trust Vlad, at the very least not around her. Toby looked proud and grinned another of his doggy grins, holding his wagging tail high. He followed Sid as he examined and poked around, before sticking his head in one pile of clothes, only to end up blinking comically at Sidney through the red lacings of one of Iden's corsets. Rugs could fly? o.o Did Sidney know how to make them do that?
Though he wasn't capable of telling his friend, Iden usually slept down here, and Vlad too. He whuffed grumpily to himself at that thought, though the sound might easily be mistaken as pertaining to the fact that he was half-inside his caretaker's corset. But, little did either of them realize, the dim basement lair was actually presently occuppied by one of its usual tenants, laying back amongst the bed's many pillows. Vlad listenened to the hissing, unfamiliar voice, waiting until the speaker had finished before stirring, moving in one fluid movement to the edge of the bed, from which he looked down at the intruders with red eyes and a fanged grin. His face was framed by a curtain of dark hair, damp from the shower he'd taken just earlier.
What a strange pair they made, miniature dog and talking snake. A talking snake with arms. What had Toby dragged in? "And if the tomb's keeper has not yet left? What then, little serpent?" the vampire inquired calmly, although there was a menacing quality to him, not something intentionally assumed but simply there. "Hey, it's a curious thing these velvets!" D laughed. "I'd be fairly concerned too about what might have effected him while a plush, if I knew from the start what was going to happen. I found out shortly after, when I met another velvet already grown.... but at the beginning I don't know if I really believed the stuffed toy I'd bought was going to come alive, let alone turn into something so child-like. And that's a whole new kettle of fish!" D winked at the other woman. "Things do get a bit easier. They can talk and you can finally understand them better... but I've never had much experience with children. Alot more work than a pet. Fortunatly Sidney's pretty self-sufficient and still doesn't eat much. Plus a friend of mine is helping tutor him."Sidney, not one for clothes himself as scales and a scarf did him nicely, wasn't aware what it was Toby had gotten himself tangled up in. But the little dog seemed a bit stuck and Sidney grinned and came over to help him. "Ah... trapss. Got to watch out for them. Don't worry, I'll get you out of it."
It was while he helped lift bits of lace of Toby's ears and off his paws that he heard Vlad speak. His head snapped round, not in fright but mostly in surprise. He hadn't noticed anyone here! Had they just arrived or had they been hidden? Sid did recognise the pointed fangs but after having met Iden and Naraka already that didn't really concern him.
"Oh!" He hissed, quickly carrying on with his little fantasy game. This new person had described himself as the tomb's keeper after all. "Well, it dependss on the kind of keeper.... Umm, sometimess you can ssneak around them, or loose them in a mazzze. Oh and if they have eyess that turn you to sstone then you need a mirror. Reflect the sspell back on them you ssee?" He explained, recalling some of the adventure stories he'd been read or told about."I met Nayati right off, so I guess I was lucky there. I had some idea what would happen, at least." Iden smiled, remembering that night and the little unicorn fondly. "It's going to be strange when he grows up. I've never really been around children much, myself. I hope I manage alright. Something tells me Toby won't be a light eater, though." She chuckled. "Even now he'll try to eat most things at least once." Toby licked Sid's hand gratefully as he was being 'freed,' but tensed all over when Vlad made himself known. He set his ears forward, glaring at him and showing a bit of tooth himself, his hackles raised. It was partly surprise that prompted the reaction, but defensiveness too, since he had no idea how the vampire might be inclined to treat is friend. So he stood his ground and glared warningly, deciding it best to make himself clear now in the best way he could. Vlad had better not try anything, not with Toby around! >3Vlad heard Sidney out with an amused smile. So, a little snake-child with a head for stories, it would seem. He cast a glance at Toby, raising an eyebrow. Iden had gone on quite a bit about 'velvets,' which she said the dog was...and which, he assumed, his reptilian friend was as well. Toby would become a dog-child, he supposed...but with a head for what? A good question, indeed.
"Ah, but here there is only one way in and out, and no maze," he pointed out, "And I am afraid mirrors do not reflect my powers. Could it be that you are without escape, raider of tombs?"If I can manage I'm sure you can." D smiled. She had to laugh though when Iden said Toby liked to eat everything. "That's the dog in him is it? Well, at least you'll be able to tell him what's for eating and what's not. Maybe he'll grow out of it though? You never know."Toby's reaction was a curious one and Sidney looked at him. Either he was playing along and 'defending' them from this person, or he really didn't like the man at all. Sidney admitted he was rather spooky, but then, Sidney never let spooky things stand in his way.
Keeping his ground next to Toby, and wishing he had bought his whip with him, Sidney pulled himself up a bit on his coils. "Careful Toby... perhapss he meanss to trick uss with riddless." He said quietly to his friend. But he also mentioned it because he didn't know what this person was up to. Tomb protectors usually liked to attack adventures caught in their lairs. They had to be ready for it....
"Only one way out huh?" He replied to Vlad, casting a quick glance around the room. All they would need was a pipe or vent, something they'd fit into but not this person. "There'sss alwayss a few ways pluss the door's sstill open... And everything'ss got some weaknesss. Like... like that one dragon who fell assleep if you rubbed it's belly. Then again, why do we need to escape? We haven't umm, raided anything yet?""I hope so," Iden said fervently, then chuckled. "Yeah, definitely the dog in him there. I don't know that he'll outgrow his stomach, but hopefully he will have the sense to listen if I tell him not to eat something. Otherwise he's in for a lifetime of stomachaches." Toby sidled closer to Sid, still visibly wary. Vlad hadn't offered either of them harm, but he wasn't about to let down his guard. He was worried about more than just tricks with Vlad."The door's still open, yes, but what if I'm faster than you?" the vampire continued to push, interested to see what other strategies the child could come up with. "True, you've yet to raid this tomb. But you are trespassing; or didn't you know you aren't supposed to be down here?" Vlad chuckled. He didn't care that they were down here at the moment, not really. He was more amused than anything."A lifetime of stomach aches? Oh ho! That would be awful! I think one of his first lessons will be on what's edible and what's not." D chuckled. "But I'm sure he'll soon realise it's not fun eating some things." Enjoying her little chat with Iden, she wasn't too worried about Sid. Even though she just assumed he was still in the front garden with the pooka, she figured he was safe enough at a friend's house. Toby had survived so far in any case!Sidney shifted his coils under him as he pondered the situation. Glancing quickly at Toby he wondered if they could make it back out the door fast enough. Toby might but even though Sidney was pretty fast for a snake, the velvet's size didn't help against something as big as a person. He did have pretty sharp teeth, not that he was into biting people normally, but if he had too... And then there was his hypnotism. That worked best on mice and birds. He tried it on Dee once but she had to be sitting quietly for it to work.
However Vlad was laying still and was just talking quietly, it might work. No harm in trying. "Well... it's not really tress-tresspasssing if you're an explorer. How elsse do placess get disscovered?" Sidney replied slowly, working up his power. "And why? Are we not supposed to be down here? ......Hiding sssomething are you? Treassure?" He grinned, beginning to wind his tail and lower half slowly, shifting his stripes so that they tricked the eye and looked like they were moving by themselves over his scales."Yeah, I'm sure he'll learn eventually. If nothing else, just by trial and error." Iden laughed, shaking her head fondly. She wasn't at all worried about what Toby and Sid might be up to, either. What was around here that they could get in trouble with, after all? Toby returned Sid's glance, though he didn't know just what Sid was glancing at him for. At this point, the dog wasn't terribly sure what to do. He might be small and fast, but not as fast as Vlad, especially not on stairs. And with Sidney having to slither up them..the pair wouldn't make it to the door before the vampire. If he tried to pull something, their best hope would really be to just make a lot of noise and hope someone would notice.Vlad laughed. "I wasn't aware that explorers were interested in 'discovering' other people's basements. Whatever happened to exotic, faraway places? Have you ever been somewhere like that?" Continuing to simply stare at Sidney, since he was talking to him after all, he was silent for a long pause, suddenly finding that he was content just to keep staring...and then realizing, from prior experience, what was happening, he tore his eyes away and looked at Toby instead. This snake-child was..very interesting, indeed. "Perhaps you are not allowed down here, not for the sake of keeping something safe, but for your own good.""Trial and error..." D wondered aloud with a smile before giving an amused sigh. "I'm afraid that might be the case anyway. It's all very well warning them against things. But sometimes they don't listen, or don't believe you until they try it themselves."Sidney didn't say anything at first, just continuing his little spell. It seemed to be.... yes.... Ahh!! Drat! Vlad turned away, looking a bit like he realised what was happening. Or hopefully he just found the experience uncomfortable and instinctively turned away before it was complete. In either case Sid decided it was best not to mention it.
"Well, you have to usse your imagination. Ssso it's not really a bassement... it could be ssome ancient temple or ssomething. Haven't you ever played that before?" He replied. "And I have been to the beach. That's kinda exssotic. Well, if there's cavess and pirates. But do you mean real templess? Nah, there'ss none around here.... And what do you mean 'for our own good'? You think it's dangerouss here? Ussually dangerousss places have traps or warnings or ssomething.""The same sorts of things our parents lamented over, probably." Iden laughed, shaking her head. "I know I wasn't exactly one for listening, a lot of the time." Toby shifted his weight from one front paw to the other, unfailingly on guard despite his fidgeting. Still, Vlad seemed in a good kind of mood. Maybe it would be alright."It's been...a very long time since I 'played that.'" Not since he'd raised his own children...but that was something better left not thought upon. "Haven't you ever wanted to see something you didn't have to imagine to see? A real place, with real treasure? A real adventure?" Vlad brushed a drying, wavy strand of hair back behind his ear. "It's not here that's dangerous. It's what lives down here that's dangerous. When I want to be." His expression was lit with a kind of strange good humor."Is that right?" D looked over at the turned-vampire with a curious grin on her face. "A little terror huh? What on earth did you get up to? Climbing on the roof? Playing out in the cold without a sweater?" She laughed, although she wouldn't have minded hearing about Iden's childhood. "I don't remember doing anything really bad myself as a child." It was hard to when you had to help out your mother alot and the home was a business.Toby's shifting was getting Sidney a little suspicious. Normally Sid wouldn't really worry about it but he had to consider that the other velvet knew more about this house and it's occupants than he did. What was the dog so nervous about? Sure this guy was rather creepy... moreso than Nar or Iden. But so far he hadn't done anything to be alarmed about. Just talked and Sidney assumed he'd just been playing along with their game.
But his curiousity was sparked when Vlad asked about wanting to go someplace that would be a real adventure. No ruined temples made out of the couch cushions.... no overgrown headhunter-inhabited jungles that were really just the patch of garden around the back of the house... the real thing!?! "A real adventure? Real treassshure? Are you sseriouss? Where? I haven't heard of any plascess near here. D'ss never ssaid anything about a plasce like that." He looked at Toby to see if he knew about such a place. Maybe that's why he'd brought them down here? "And you, dangerouss? Well, everyone can be dangerouss if they want... and have the sskillss. Did you want to play along and be the sscary tombkeeper? I ssupposse you can if you want... You were doing ok before.""Yeah, actually I did manage to get out on the barn roof a couple of times. And took dad's horse for a ride once and wound up with a broken arm." Iden laughed, then grinned a little slyly. "And plenty of things they never found about, once I was older." Toby was clueless when he looked up at Sid. The little dog really had no idea what was going on. But nonetheless, he mustered a hearty, reassuring tailwag for his friend.Vlad grinned, an idea having begun to take shape in his mind..and it wasn't a sinister one, surprisingly. Although Iden might have fits if she realized Toby and his friend were nowhere to be found. Well, that was just an added bonus. "It's not near here, exactly, but it isn't exactly far away, either. I'd suppose 'D' never said anything about it because they don't know about it. No one does. But I do, and I know how to get there."
"Perhaps...we can leave the 'scary tombkeeper' for another time.""Going for a ride without permission? Well there you are then! Something we're probably likely to tell our young charges now, and if Toby does go off well you'll know what it's like." D chuckled. "Of course, I do hope neither would do anything that ended up with a broken arm or any other broken limbs. That must have been a painful lesson."Taking Toby's wagging tail to mean he was happy enough with this trail of conversation, Sidney carried on. He couldn't let it go now in any case, not when Vlad said he knew how to get there. "Ssomewhere ssecret? That'ss even better! Then the graverobberss wouldn't have gotten there firssst." Sidney beamed. It was confusing that the vampire said it wasn't near but it wasn't exactly far either. Maybe he meant something else? "So where is it? Let'ss go check it out! You want to ssee it too Toby? Come on, it'll be a real adventure!""At least they don't have any horses to run off with, eh? Not anywhere near their size, anyway." Iden nodded. "But I had plenty of fun up until then. It might even have been worth it." Toby was..gradually..feeling better about this. If Vlad wanted to harm them, he would have by now...right? And Sidney seemed excited, so maybe this wouldn't be a bad thing, if it made his friend so happy. So he summoned another wag of his tail, signaling his readiness to tag along. At Sidney's enthusiastic reaction, Vlad's grin widened, and he slid fluidly off the side of the bed to hunt for his boots in the dark. Once he'd found them, he leaned against the bedpost and set about pulling them on. "My old home," he explained, "My old Wallachia. Romania."
Ready now, he looked down, regarding Iden's strange little dog, and his even stranger friend. But then, Sidney wasn't so strange after all. Just a child, if in a very odd package. "Shall we?""Oh dear, can you imagine if they tried that with Nayati?" D laughed out loud. She hadn't met the shop owner's velvet very often but she knew who he was. "And riding is good fun, I enjoy it myself... although not on your conventional horse... Do you still ride?"Sidney watched as the man slid up off the bed with as much 'slink' as a snake. It was kinda impressive and he wondered about him and who he was. Toby... well, didn't seem to like him all that much but he wasn't growling or cowering. In fact the dog looked happy about the situation now. Sid assumed it was because they were going to go on an adventure for real! Who wouldn't be excited about that?!
"Wallacheeeia Row-mania?" Sidney rolled the name around on his tongue. He'd never heard of it before but it did sound ancient and exoctic. He wrapped his scarf around his neck a little tighter to stop it falling off. "Yep! Ready! Aren't we Toby? Ssooo... which way iss it? You better lead. Be our guide." He turned as if to go back up the stairs, guessing (as any normal person would) that they had to go outside to start heading off to this new place.

A trip to Iden's house...and beyond? (Part 3)Quote: "Oh dear, can you imagine if they tried that with Nayati?" D laughed out loud.
Be our guide." He turned as if to go back up the stairs, guessing (as any normal person would) that they had to go outside to start heading off to this new place."Nayati's the unicorn, right?" Iden laughed, too. That would certainly be..something. "Mm-hm. Sometimes on a conventional horse, but not usually. Most of the time on an erras, which is a sort of unicorn, or on a siira." Intrigued, she had to ask what D rode. "What do you ride?" Sidney's excitement was really rather contagious, and Toby bounced on his forepaws a couple of times with puppyish excitement before turning to follow Sid. He still held to a faint sort of worry, but that wouldn't stop him from going along. He'd just have to be on guard.Vlad chuckled at the snake's testing of the place-name, realizing belatedly that he didn't know what the boy's name was. "No, no need to go upstairs. We're not going that way," he corrected. "By the way, little serpent, I don't suppose you have a name?"
Though he spoke to them, he wasn't looking at the two Velvets anymore; his eyes were half-closed and unfocused as he concentrated on..something. And then, after several long moments a faint glowing started, and a portal appeared just in front of where Vlad was standing. It wasn't a simple pool of light, but the hazy image of a long stone hallway.
Half-lidded eyes still staring at nothing, the vampire-ghost gestured vaguely at the opening with one hand. "Go," his voice was almost a whisper now, "Just step through. I will follow."
If..when...the Velvets stepped through, it wouldn't feel particularly strange. Maybe a little like walking through cobwebs. It would be cold, too, but then it was a stone hallway on an early fall night. Wall sconces provided a decent amount of light, but no heat worth speaking of.D nodded, yep the little unicorn boy that the shop owner cared for. She wondered how he was going now and reminded herself to send him a note about Sidney's party. "Oh yeah, a siira. You said before you were helping a friend tame one. Well, I guess it was about six months ago now, I used to stable and look after these creatures called chocobos. Did some breeding too. They're.. well, they're best described as an ostrid-size chicken. But they're very similar to horses in their nature and make good mounts. Anyway, the business didn't do so well so I had to stop keeping other peoples.... Still have mine own of course, Wellard. I'll have to show you him one day. Perhaps we could go on a trail ride or something? I haven't done one of those with someone else along for company in ages." D answered the question, a bit of a wistful look on her face toward the end. Sidney paused once he had gotten up to the second step and turned around when he heard Vlad tell him that was the wrong way. He looked at Toby, puzzled, and then back at the vampire. "Huh? But you ssaid yoursself that there wass no other way out of here. How are we going to get to Wallacheeia-roemania?" At the question of names, he blinked, having forgotten all about introductions. "Oh, I'm Ssidney. And what'ss your name?"
But waiting for an answer was quickly outweighed by what Vlad was doing. Sid stared in transfixed amasement as the portal grew and opened up. He could fine the right words, so instead just hissed "That isss sssoooooo.... cooool...." He slipped back down to the basement floor and peered into the 'hole' in time and space. Looked like some hallway from an ancient castle, what with all the torches. "Coming Toby?" He looked at his partner and grinned, before slipping through.
He patted at his arms and face at the slightly odd feeling, and instinctively adjusted his skill of body-temperature control so that the cool stone walls didn't make him feel too chilly.Iden had to chuckle at the thought that 'ostrich-sized chickens' actually existed. There was just something silly about chickens to begin with. "I'd really like that," she asnwered eagerly. "I'd invite you to ride a siira, but most of them really aren't suited for it, so it can be a bit, ah...risky. But there are a couple of horses out at the stable, too, so you could ride one of those." Toby stared for a moment in perplexed awe at the portal, before meeting his friend's look and trotting through after him, without a second thought.Once the two Velvets had gone through, Vlad hurried after; once he was through, he leaned back against the stone wall, tipping his head back and shutting his eyes. He'd never actually..done that intentionally without feeding first beforfe, and it was something of a drain this way.
Finally, he grinned, though otherwise he didn't move just yet. "I'm Vlad. Welcome to Poenari.""The way you were describing them before, yeah.... risky is the word. No offence or anything, I'm sure they behave for you." She gave her a little wink. "But yeah, I can ride horses... it'll feel a bit odd though. I've gone so long riding on something with just two legs. The gaits are very different you see."Sidney nearly didn't wait after getting through the portal. This was sooo much cooler than anything he'd ever seen! He was just itching to carry on and see where it went, what was outside and.. and.. everything! Of course, he'd have been mindful of traps. Too much rushing can set them off.
But he waited, grinning at Toby who was close behind him, and then at Vlad as their guide followed in after. He looked a bit weary and Sidney slithered up to sit near his booted foot (he tended not to climb up stranger's legs). "You ok Vlad? That was awssome! Sso where are we? What is thiss place Poenari? Iss it in Wallacheeia? Cool... let'ss go check it out!""No offense taken. Sometimes I think the people who buy and own them have got to be crazy, honestly." She wrinkled her nose, then nodded. "I'd imagine they would be different. Even just different four-legged animals have gaits that feel odd compared to the others." Once he'd gotten through, Toby turned in circles, looking every which way, taking in the stone hallway with wide, curious eyes. Finally satisfied that he'd seen all there was to see about the hall, he trotted over to stand by Sidney and Vlad. He didn't stand still, though, but shifted his weight from foot to foot; the stone floor was cold under his bare pawpads. After a few moments more, Vlad opened his eyes and looked down at Sid, waving off his concern. "Poenari is my castle, which, yes, is in Wallachia. This is Poenari as it was when I lived here; I'm told it's in ruins now." He shrugged. "Well, where would you like to go? Pick a direction."
This hallway didn't branch off; at the end they'd entered facing was a solid-looking wooden door, and at the other were steps leading up."Well I've only ever ridden horses and chocobos." D said, still chuckling from Iden's last comment about Siira owners being crazy. "How about you? I'm guessing a fair few, if your variety of pets is anything to go by." It really was quite amasing and D wondered how they all seemed to get along ok.Sidney noticd his friend feeling the cold. It took a moment for him to work it out though, not suffering himself. Once he had he extended a warm scaly hand and touched the dog's side. "You cold Toby? Hey Vlad, how about ssomewhere a bit warmer? What about in there?" He pointed at the large door. Maybe it was a room with heating? Or at least something on the floor rather than just bare stone.
"Hang on.... did you ssay thiss wass your casstle? And what are you talking about 'as it wass when you lived here' and being in ruinss now? It doessn't look very ruined to me. Iss this place real?""Well, I don't really have many that are riding size. But I did ride a camel once, which was..different. And a llama we had when I was a kid, and an elephant at the zoo." She grinned; the llama had not been particularly happy. "When it comes to the more exotic stuff, it's been siirae, errais, and tari. Tari look like some sort of horse-dragon hybrid, though I don't really know for sure." While she spoke, a little, very shaggy brown-green pooka with droppy ears came toddling over to finally have a look at the new visitor. The swamp pooka's permanently soggy fur sort of..squished now and then when it moved. When he felt his friend's warm hand on his side, Toby moved closer to Sid, hoping for some kind of body heat. He didn't know that reptiles were supposed to be cold-blooded, so he didn't boggle at all about how the other Velvet might be warm. He looked at Sidney, then at the door, then at Vlad and then it the door again. It wasn't that he couldn't suffer through being cold, he'd just much rather not be.Looking down at Toby, he nodded and started to move down the hall towards the door. He knew what the cold floor felt like under bare paws, although it didn't make the vampire uncomfortable at all. "In there will serve."
"It's real, in its own way." Vlad shrugged. "The simplest way to put it is that we've gone back in time; or, perhaps more appropriately, into memory.""Well I haven't ridden any of those." D mused. "An elephant even? Where was that? On a trip overseas?" She'd only ever seen them at the city zoo and they weren't rideable there, as far as she knew. "Can't say I've heard of the others, except now when you've mentioned them. A Tari sounds like one of those... what are they called? Like the Japanese species of unicorn, I think. Something like a horse-dragon cross."
When the squelchy pooka caught her attention quickly, although maybe not in the expected response. "Oh no Iden. Umm... one of your pets has gotten himself in quite a mess...." She looked appologetically down at the pooka and it's apparent 'mess'. "Hey there little guy. What have you been rolling in huh? You look soaked!"Sidney stopped, his eyes growing even wider. There was little doubt that everything around them was real. He could touch it, feel the coldness and smell the damp beneath the stones. It was all very solid and very much convincing at being 'real'. "Back in... is that even posssible? I've ssseen it in sssci-fi'ss. But never.. I mean, no one's ever actually traveled back in time or a memory before.. have they?"
As he began slithering after Vlad towards the door he looked over at Toby, his face positively beaming. "You know what thiss meanss Toby?! We're the firsst! We're real explorersss becausse no one'ss ever travelled back in time!!""It was at some zoo or another, though I can't for the life of me remember which one." She scratched her head. "Oh, you mean kirin? Yeah, something like that I guess. But tari aren't particularly pretty or elegant, they're rather stocky, sturdy things." "Oh!" Iden laughed, looking down at the waterlogged pooka. It peered up at D with a soft chuff, tail flicking thoughtfully. "He's always that way; swamp influence, you see." Toby met Sidney beaming gaze with another of his doggy grins, tail wagging furiously. His claws clicked on the cold stone floor as he pranced alongside his friend. Real explorers! Oooh! Such an adventure. "Well, I should certainly think it's possible!" Vlad chuckled, continuing down the hall at a pace the slitherer could keep up with. "Seeing as that's what we've done, is it not? As to whether or not anyone has before, I don't have the answer to that particular question. Perhaps they did and simply decided to stay. Or, just as likely, never told anyone because they wouldn't be believed in the first place.""Kirin, that's the word I was looking for." D nodded. She'd heard of them and have a vague picture in her mind. Hmm... now make it stocky and less elegant and you had a tari. Well.. kinda. She looked thoughtful for a moment before grinning and chuckling. "You're just going to have to show me some of these creatures sometime Iden. I can't picture some of them."
Fortunatly Iden didn't seem upset or annoyed with the soggy pooka either. "Swamp influence? What... you mean he's always this damp? How.... odd." She couldn't help herself looking sheepish. She loved animals herself but she did like a clean house. This thing seemed like it would never dry out. Just to test it she reached out a hand to pet his head slightly, her face showing her surprise as fingers met wet fur."Well yeah, I guessss so. I just haven't heard of anyone doing it before uss..." But Vlad's other comment would have been a good explaination of that. Who would have believed such a tale of going back in time? Sidney looked slightly crestfallen as blooming notions of telling everyone about this and becoming famous as a time-explorer were just as quickly dashed. "Ssoo... you don't think anyone would believe uss? Maybe we could bring back sso proof or ssomething?""I guess I'll have to, then!" Iden grinned as well. "What are we up to now? Erras, siira, and tari?" "Yep, he's always wet," she confirmed. "I've got a couple others that are the same way. They're all kind of..self-contained, though; they don't really drip water around, unless they want to, or they shake or something. It's the feel of them that takes some getting used to..like a wet shag carpet, according to Nar." She chuckled, while the pooka butted its soggy-furred little head against D's hand. As he listened to the conversation he couldn't really participate in, Toby kept up his prancing gait all the way down the hallway; partly because he was excited, but also because he really wasn't liking the cold floor under his paws."It would depend on the person you tell, I suppose. People who know you might believe you, while others might think you just have an overactive imagination." He shrugged as he came to the door, opening it to reveal a small but finely-appointed bedroom, dimly-lit and windowless. "Yes, perhaps a bit of proof, if you so wish. We'll have to come up with something suitable, clearly from around this place and time.""Yup, those ones." D nodded and continued to feel the top of the pooka's head. It must have been one of the weirdest sensations she'd ever felt. Squishy and wet... but kinda held in the fur. It really did feel like a wet shag-carpet!
"That's a good description." She mused out loud, with a smile. "So a couple more too? Well it's handy that they don't err.. drip. Otherwise you'd be forever mopping up! So what's this little guy's name then?"Hmm.... Sid tapped his chin as he pondered. Who would believe him instead of just thinking his imagination was getting away with him. He did have a very active imagination after all, the basement/tomb and Vlad/tomb-keeper being a good example of it. But surely D would believe him! And Acia and his best friends... wouldn't they?
"Well when Toby growss he can be a witnesss." Sidney looked over at the trotting dog and nodded. "You too Vlad! You'd back me up right? Ah but sscientissstss do prefer ssolid proof. Sso what would be from around this place and time? A map? Or a book maybe?" He slithered into the windowless room and looked about. Looked rather like a bedroom... except for the no windows thing. His room had windows and so did D's. "Iss thiss your room?" He asked the vampire. The pooka flicked its tail, which did scatter a few water droplets, trying to decide whether or not to make the effort to clamber up onto the couch. But the pooka was also lazy in addition to being waterlogged, so it settled for staying where it was. "Mm, he's just 'Boggy,'" she answered with a touch of sheepishness, because it was such a terribly uninventive name. "Anymore, I just wind up calling most of the pooka by their influence, or something close to it." He returned Sid's nod, which happily was an easy sort of gesture for the dog. He too looked around the bedroom, eyes wide and curious. He'd stopped his fidgeting finally, paws planted on a lovely, middle eastern-looking rug to one side of the large bed with its dark wood frame."I don't see why not." Although some people might think he was simply humoring Sidney's 'fantasies,' or some other such thing. Well, you never could please everyone. "Or perhaps a more conventional sort of treasure? Coins are easily traced," he mused thoughtfully. "Yes, my room; one of them, anyway." Vlad grinned...he'd rarely actually slept in this room, but instead in one hidden below it.D couldn't help but chuckle out loud at the pooka's name. "Oh very suitable!" She laughed and grinned at Iden while she continued to pet the animal's head with one hand. "Yes well, sometimes it just too hard to remember all the names and who they belong to when there's so many. I can see why you would have to put something you're going to easily associate with that particular pet." She nodded. "It's a bit like that when I have breeding mothers at my house. Uh, cait mothers I mean. When there's about 2 or more litters going at the same time it can be very tricky recognising all the little cits. Fortunatly their mother's know which are theirs and I don't have to worry about naming them all, their new owners take care of that."Sidney didn't mind still being on the stone floor, what with his special power over his body temperature. So while Toby warmed his paws on the rug, Sidney slithered about the edge of the room, looking all around him. The bed was huge! Even by normal bed sizes and not just his velvet-sized hammock. Everything looked rather lavish too, but then Vlad did mention it was his castle.
"Oh yess! Coinss would work!" Sidney turned to look up at the room's owner. "Do you have one ssomewhere we could take back? It'ss your casstle right?" He looked around again, thinking on what he knew of castles. Only a bit. "Doess it have a dungeon? Oh and a moat? Casstless ussually have thosse.""Luckily pooka usually look pretty different from one another, in colors and markings at least, and sometimes a bit in body. And siirae don't usually have more than a foal or two, so they're not hard to keep straight. I remember I used to have a time of it telling apart our barncats' kittens at home, though." Iden nodded, grinning as well, and chuckled. "But your caits sound a bit more interesting than barncats." Not one to miss the opportunity to get comfortable, the small dog settled himself on the rug and curled up, watching and listening to Sid and Vlad with a great deal of interest. Maybe in a minute or two he'd venture back onto the cold floor to get a better look at the room."Right," he affirmed with a nod, heading over to a tall chest of drawers and plucking a small wooden box from the top of it. Then, moving to lean against the bed, he opened it and started to look through its contents, which were clearly metallic from the sounds they made. "There is a dungeon, yes, but no moat. No need for one; the mountain location and the river do quite well.""Funny you should mention barncats." D smirked. "Caits are, well, kinda similar. If you can imagine a cat with a bit of fox thrown in. Large fluffy tails and tuffed ears. They also grow larger than normal cats. But as for the barn thing.. well I actually converted the stable stalls at home to house expecting mothers and those with litters."Sidney glanced at his friend. Seeing him curled up he hoped he wasn't bored or tired. Sidney was finding this all rather amasing... but maybe Toby didn't? Although he seemed to be watching him and Vlad very intently. "You ok Toby?" He asked, before hearing Vlad fetch the wooden box and riffle through it.
Curiousity overcoming him, he slithered over and wraped his coils around Vlad's leg, climbing up to try and get a better view of the box's contents. "Hey thanksss Vlad!" He grinned and thanked him for the coin that he assumed the vampire must be searching through the box for. "Then can we go ssee other roomss? Maybe not the moat then... but the battlementss? Even with mountainss the casstle hass wallss right?""I saw Suta once, she was very cute...and very playful, I liked her a lot." Iden smiled. "Oh, did you? That's a good idea; certainly beats cardboard boxes or the like." In reponse, Toby raised his head and wagged his tail. And now that he was suitably warmer, he was ready to venture off the rug, comfortable though it was. Standing, he sniffed around for a moment...and smelling something potentially interesting, he followed the scent under the bed. When he felt something coiling its way up his leg, Vlad looked down in genuine surprise. Then smirked, shaking his head lightly; that was certainly something new. He didn't mind, though, and after a moment more of searching through the box, he pulled out a small silver coin, which sometime in its existence had acquired a hole near its edge. Pulling a short silver chain from the box as well, he then set the box down on the bed and proceeded to go about fastening coin to chain. "Yes, we can go to other rooms, and to the battlements if you'd like," he answered while he worked, "A castle would be no castle without walls, mountains or no."
After a minute or so, he passed the Velvet-sized necklace to Sidney. As for the coin that hung from it, aside from the hole it was in good shape, and the designs on each side were hardly worn; one was an eagle looking back at a cross, and the other a dragon strangling itself with its own tail. "Coins have a way of losing themselves," Vlad offered by way of explanation for the necklace.((Annd...necklace for Sid: side 1 side 2 biggrin )) "Well then!" D announced with a wide smile. "I'll definitely have to invite you round and see the place, caits, chocobo, the lot!" She nodded to herself in approval at the idea, though it'd been on her mind for a little while now. "Heheh, yeah little Suta is very sweet. I'm glad he's got her for company. Gives him someone to care for and look after, you know? Kesin, that's his velvet, is very independant and doesn't hang around much. Or get on very well with him I don't think. But Suta adores him and follows him all over the basement! Well, she does when he's supervising her. Otherwise he's made this playpen around his bedroom so that she doesn't knock over all those stacks of boxes that he's got crammed in there and hurt herself." D didn't think to explain how she knew what Nar's basement and bedroom were like, though.Sidney clung to Vlad's trousers. It was hard getting further up. Usually D let her arm hang down so he could easily reach it and then coil himself around that and continue up until he got to her shoulders. But Vlad was using his hands to do something with the coin. Sidney looked up, watching with a fascinated expression as the vampire threaded the chain through the little hole. When it was presented to him, Side nearly lost his grip as he reached to accept it. Instead he hung on with one hand and his tail, while he looped the chain around his neck. It certainly was a good idea to keep from loosing it as Vlad had explained.
Then quickly as he could he slipped back down to the floor and held up the coin to study it, his little snake fangs exposed as he grinned. "Oh wow!! Thankss Vlad! Thiss isss sso cool! Jusst the thing for proof. What's the symbols on it mean? The bird and the dragon and that? Oh but yeah, thank you! Uhh... I can keep it right?" He suddenly wondered if it wasn't a gift, but then Vlad had made the chain just the right size for him.
"Hey Toby! Come have a look at thiss! ...Toby?" He looked around for his friend, just spotting his waggling tail disappear under the bed. "Whatcha doing?" He called and slither under the bed too to inspect whatever it was the dog was searching for under there."Sounds wonderful, I'd love to see it all!" Iden grinned excitedly. "Kesin's a Velvet, too, is he? He's definitely quite a...character, that one." She didn't find it too odd that D knew what Nar's basement looked..she'd been down there herself, after all. So she just took it as nothing really exceptional. "So, I take it you gave him Suta? He mentioned once she was a gift." Toby had his nose to the ground, and was sniffing busily away. He'd smelled some sort of rodent he thought, but apparently it had beaten a hasty retreat when everyone had come into the room. He looked up when Sidney called, ambling over to have a look at whatever it was he'd just been given. It was a bit dark under the bed to tell, though."The eagle is an old symbol of Wallachian rulers," he answered, "And that dragon is the symbol of the Dragon Order."
Kneeling next to the bed after the Velvets had disappeared beneath it, Vlad peered underneath, chuckling. "I promise there are more interesting things than the underside of my bed, if you still care to explore elsewhere.""Oh, so you've met him? Yeah, the bird's a strange one. But still.." D gave a little helpless shrug. "Anyway, yeah come on round. Umm... I might have to warn Elissa. She's my housemate you see. The first time Nar popped round in the middle of the night when I wasn't there... Well, she was a bit overly cautious. But it's alright now, really." D hastily added. She didn't want to suddenly put off Iden or make her feel in any way unwelcome.
"And yeah, Suta was a gift from me. Last Christmas it was."Whatever Toby had found, it wasn't anything Sidney could see. Maybe if he weren't so excited about being here he'd also have noticed the scent of a mouse, they were part of a snake's natural diet after all. But as it was, he didn't register it.
It was dark under the bed and so he motioned for Toby to come follow him out, plus Vlad had a point too. He slithered back out to sit (as well as a snake can sit) on the ground near the vampire, holding out the coin for Toby to see properly. "The rulerss huh? Jusst like how there'ss people'ss headsss on coinss now right? Oh, and what'sss a dragon order? I didn't know they were real." He grinned at Toby, letting the coin hang around his neck like some sort of talisman. "Cool eh? And now we have some proof to sshow everyone!"
Giving the room one last looking over, he glanced up at Vlad. "Sso let's go sssee what wass the other way down that hall.""Very, although Ri, that talking pooka outside, is about the same sort of strange himself." She smirked, recalling the..multilingual argument magpie and pooka had gotten into with each other. No more trips to the Toychest for Ri, most likely. "I think I might be a bit concerned, myself, if a vampire showed up in the middle of the night to visit my roommate!" Iden chuckled, wondering just a little what Naraka might be swinging by D's for, but they were friends, after all. Nothing too unusual, even the middle-of-the-night thing, seeing as he was a vampire. No good resaon to be assuming anything, then. Toby padded out from under the bed after Sid, peering closely at the coin...then giving it a few good sniffs, and finally a cursory lick. It just tasted metallic, though, as was only to be expected. But it was still very interesting, and he looked up from his inspection to grin back at Sid, then look over towards the door. Yes! More adventuring! He wagged his tail, signalling his approval of the idea."Yes, rather like that, although then, and before that, people's heads were sometimes on coins as well. As for the Dragon Order, it was an order of knights; when he joined, my father took it, and its symbol, to heart. So he was called 'Dracul' after it, 'the dragon.'"
"As you wish, then." Nodding, he straightened and headed out the door, pausing to wait for the Velvets.D glanced back at the open doorway when Iden mentioned the pooka they'd met outside. "Really? Don't suppose you have any hints for dealling with 'that sort'?" She grinned, as though not very serious but really, anything might have helped. "Yes, good point! That was her reasoning too. And I guess I don't blame her for it. I'd say any stranger would have me concerned, if they just turned up in the middle of the night. Anyway, she's met him a few more times, so it wouldn't be a shock to meet you. She's just not very familiar with the more.. diverse personalities. If that makes sense."
D smiled and then, as if remembering, she glanced back at the rather empty looking doorway. Even with a second look she couldn't see much in the way of velvets outside.... "I wonder what they're up to. Being very quiet about it..."Sidney was quite proud when Toby came to give his coin an inspection. Apparently it passed and the dog looked very happy about it. Looking over at the door too Sidney nodded. "Yeah, let'ss go check it out. That'ss ok, issn't it Vlad?" He headed over and out the door, pausing in the hallway to wait for his traveling partner and guide.
"Knightss... makess ssense with the casstle and all. And 'Dracul' iss a great name! Imagine being called a dragon!""Not any in particular, really. You just learn to live with them, I guess...or just to ignore them, sometimes." She chuckled, but then followed D's gaze out the door, and frowned thoughtfully. "Hmm...they could have gone traipsing off around the house with Ri playing tourguide," she suggested. "He'll take any excuse to talk at you, that one. But we could go and check on them, if you want?" Iden wasn't particularly worried for the Velvets' safety or any such thing, since there wasn't all that much they could get into in the way of trouble, but you never knew... Toby perked his ears at the mention of 'knights,' looking very attentive. Knights! Iden talked about them sometimes, and read books and things to him sometimes about them, or with them in them at least. If Vlad's dad had been a knight, was Vlad a knight too? He wrinkled his forehead in deep thought. If Vlad was a knight, didn't that make him 'good'? But...oh, now he was confused. Well, he could think about that later.
He trotted after Vlad and Sid, leaving such puzzles for later. Back to the adventure at hand! The son of the Dragon just grinned, before continuing to lead the small pair on a 'tour' of some of the castle; which he explained, briefly, was designed more as a fortress. He didn't take them all over, he did show them the chapel, thinking they might like the splendor of it, small as it was. The vampire didn't enter himself, but simply watched them explore. He also told them it was Eastern Orthodox, although he sincerely doubted either of them really had any idea what that was. After that, he made sure to show them the battlements as Sidney had requested, even offering to pick the Velvets up so that they could have a better view.
At last, he brought the abbreviated tour to an end, opening a portal as he had before and ushering them through before following himself, back into the dark basement of Iden's little house.D waved it away for the moment. "I'm sure they're alright. Sidney is very keen on exploring new places. That's probably where they've wandered off to. Seeing if your house has any secret chambers or treasure troves." She laughed and carried on chatting. Explaining a bit about her flatmate too, and how she'd been overseas before coming back and needing a place to stay.. and with D needing a little extra money, a cheap rent rate suited them both.
But as the time drew on, and still no sign or sound appeared from Sidney, or the others, her glances back at the doorway and the front garden grew more frequent. "Hmm... it's getting on.... maybe we should round them up and see what they've been up to?" She suggested, standing as well to try and get a better view of outside and hopefully catch a glimpse of their charges.Sidney couldn't understand what Toby was looking so confused about, and so just motioned for him to come along on their tour. And what a tour it was! The chapel had greatly impressed him and Sidney found himself wondering if it had catacombs mazing their way beneath the floor like in The Last Crusade. He didn't know some of the things Vlad told them, but stored away the terms and names in case they came in useful. The battlements were very exciting too. He gladly accepted the vampire's offer of lifting them up to get a better look. And wow!! The place certainly was a fortress! Looking at the surrounding mountains and the high perch that the fort was on itself, he could certainly see how it'd be considered a safe spot.
But at last the tour came to an end and Vlad did tht funny thing with the portal. It was a strange feeling, stepping through and returning to the dark and very ordinary setting of Iden basement. First things first, he checked he still had the coin. Yup! The chain certainly sercured it around his neck. "Thankss Vlad!! That wass ssooo cool!! A real adventure all right. Hey Toby? Like that?"Iden listened attentively, with honest interest, but she did notice that D was glancing out more and more often. So when she suggested seeing what the Velvets were up to, she nodded. "Sure thing. They shouldn't be too hard to find; if nothing else, Toby usually comes when he's called." Standing, she moved to the door and looked out. There wasn't much to see, except for critters of hers here and there...and Ri, grazing in the front yard; Iden's garden was dead, but it rained enoguh that her lawn did alright. "Yo, Ri!" she called to get the foraging pooka's attention, "Wha'd you do with Sid and Toby?" The little faedeer turned his attention reluctantly from his snack of clover, making sure to sigh heavily and look put-upon by the disturbance, one ear flicking in Iden's direction. "Nothin' at all, but we're gonna have a..a successful-adventure feast when they get back. Don't think they're gonna find much in th' house, but maybe the snake-kid likes boxes like Toby does an' they're gonna make a fortress or somethin'," he rambled, nodding absently while he continued to chew on a bit of clover. "But I dunno, so why're you askin' me?"Toby enjoyed himself immensely during their tour around the castle, despite the cold stone flooring...it was broken up by rugs here and there, though, so it hadn't been too bad. By the time they were done, he'd quite forgotten his suspicion of Vlad when they started out the night. In addition, it was easily the longest stretch of time he'd yet spent really around the vampire, and the time had passed with no conflict at all.
Emerging into the basement from the portal, Toby gave a slow, lazy wag of his tail, and nodded in answer to his friend's question. After all that exploring, he was starting to feel a little bit tired. But he was still thrilled with the adventure, although he was happy to be home again. Ohh, if only his mother had been there for it! She was always reading about those sorts of things, and playing games and all that. Thinking of her, he looked up towards the crack of light let in by the partly-open basement door.Vlad nodded in acknowledgement of Sidney's thanks, leaning back against the dresser while his traveling companions sorted themselves out. After a few long moments, he straightened, following Toby's gaze towards the door at the top of the stairs. "Have somewhere else to be, do you?" He grinned. "Better get upstairs lest someone thinks the wrathful tombkeeper decided to fill a pair of vacant spaces in the tomb."D followed Iden to the door and looked out from behind her. A few moments in the dry scrubs and struggling plants got her attention but they revealed themselves to only be a few different pookas and one or two things D didn't recognise. But there weren't and snakes or dogs to be found... She listened hopefully as Iden questioned Ri, but that produced nothing comfirmative either. "So they're in the house?" D added hopefully. And Ri had said they were planning to come back for a feast or whatever. Well, that was hopeful.. if only she knew where exactly they were.
Turning back into the house, she scanned their currect room. "Umm.. maybe you should try calling him then Iden?" D sounded like she was getting a little more concerned. It wasn't unusual that she let Sidney wander, but that was at home and she knew where he was. Here, well she thought he'd been outside and now he wasn't.Sidney looked up too, as Toby did. "Yeah..." He replied to Vlad. "I don't know how long we've been gone. We'd better go ssee D and Iden. Come on Toby." He climbed up the first couple of steps before turning to look back and bid goodbye to Vlad. "Haha yess! They might wonder! Well ssee you again Vlad. It was great fun!" The snake chuckled, enjoying the joke about the tombkeeper now instead of being suspicious like at their first meeting. Still grinning and occassionaly glancing at his coin 'proof', he headed back up the stairs and out onto the ground level. As Ri went back to his snack, Iden turned back to face the room, looking around it. She stared at the spear in the corner for a moment, frowning thoughtfully, before turning her attention elsewhere. Nodding at D, she called out, loud enough that Toby would be able to hear her if he was anywhere in the house. "Toby! Hey, little bud, where'd you get to?" Toby wagged his tail hesitantly at Vlad before starting to hop up the steps next to his friend. Just as Iden called for him, he was pushing against the door to get it to open a little more so they could get out. Peeking his head out, he barked, shouldering into the door some so that Sid could get out too.
Of course, he was too excited, both over their little trip and just to be answering Iden, to really remember that he wasn't supposed to be in the basement."Goodnight, Sidney." Vlad grinned, moving to the bottom of the stairs to lean against the wall and watch the pair make their way up. He smirked when he heard Iden calling for Toby, shaking his head in quiet amusement.D waited, watching as Iden frowned as she though. D didn't know she was looking at the spear.. or that it might have anything to do with the missing velvets. But her concerns were quickly washed away when she heard a response to Iden's call. A little bark! It must be from Toby and presumably Sid would be with him too. "Sounds like it came from over that way?" She offered, looking down the hallway.Sidney heard iden call too, and was quickly reminded that perhpas their caretakers would have been looking for them. He doubled his speed and slithered out the door, going on his belly so he could fit underneather the dog. Out in the hall, he grinned back at his friend. "Guessss we've been misssed huh? Let'ss go sshow them thiss!" He nodded, and headed off towards the source of Iden's voice."Yep, somewhere around.." Iden moved to look down the hallway, just in time to see Toby wiggling the rest of the way out of the door to follow Sidney. "There." She gave a resigned shake of her head, stifling a chuckle. It would just somehow figure. "What were you doing down in the basement, hmm?" Toby had started to bound over to Iden, panting and excited, happy to see her. But at mention of the basement, he slowed and dropped his ears and tail, looking up at her apologetically. He gave a slight, hopeful wag of his tail. She wasn't really mad at him, was she? Nothing had gone wrong, everything had been really swell! Nothing to worry about at all!"Sidney! There you are!" D noticably perked up as she spotted the pair emerging from one of the doorways. She didn't know where it went but according to Iden it was to the basement. "Yeah... what have you been doing in there all this time? And quite as anything too..."Answering both questions on behalf of Toby too, Sidney piped up. "We were looking for treassure.... Annnd we found it!" He came up to the two ladies, proud as punch and holding up his coin trophy. "Ssee? We got thiss from a real casstle. Well Vlad ssaid it wass a fortressss actually. But it sstill countss! Look! It'ss got a dragon on it and everything. From back in time! Vlad took uss and we ssaw hisss fortress and the mountainss and the chapel and all thisss sstuff back it time! We're time-explorersss!!" Sidney was getting quite excited recalling the event for the others and started to run his sentences together. Never too good for understanding someone with a lisp to start with."Oh, it's alright," she told Toby, heart melting at the sweet sight he made. "Come 'ere, Tobe, it's fine." Iden knelt down to give Toby a few good pats, and to listen to Sid and see what it was he held up. She leaned in a little closer to look at the coin, plainly very curious about it. She recognized it easily, because of the dragon on it...and it got her so distracted she didn't register the rest of what Sidney said right away. How had he gotten that? Had Vlad had one somewhere in his pockets all this time or something? And what on earth would prompt him to give it to a kid? Hell, what would prompt him to play pretend with the kid first? But if it had been in his pockets or something, she would've come across by now, right? Doing laundry or something. And it would be silly for him to actually be hiding something like the little silver ducat. Iden rubbed her forehead, really puzzling over this. Fortress..fortress, not castle...with mountains around it? In the mountains? If Vlad were playing pretend (she still couldn't get over that), why would he bother to 'set up' what sounded like Poenari? And what was this about time travel? She finally spoke up to ask, "Time-explorers?" Toby could have melted with relief, leaning into Iden's stroking, half-listening to Sidney doing the explaining. He gave his friend a little tail wag, before plopping down on the floor with a sigh.Unlike Iden, D had no idea about what powers Vlad may or may not have. Or even any that were possible, though improbable for him to possess. Heck, she hadn't even met the guy! So it was with a smile and a play-along nod that she listened to what Sid said. She could well believe this Vlad person had given the snake the coin, but it didn't cross her mind that he had gotten it on a journey back in time to the vampire's old residence. The term 'time-explorers' was simply put down to the child's determination to explore the unknown and a late night of watching sci-fi's.
"Sounds like one heck of an adventure Sid! No wonder you guys were gone so long." She grinned at him. "And yes, it's a great piece of treasure. Maybe you should start a coin collection hmm? There's an idea."Sidney gave a little sigh, though he wasn't ready to give up on people believing his story. Despite what Vlad had warned about telling other people. "Yess! Time-explorerss!" He nodded, his little forked tongue flicking in and out as he spoke in his excited state. "Toby will tell you.. when he can." He added, glancing over at his companion. "Oh and Vlad too, he wass there! Well, he took usss really but we went sso that makess uss explorerss too. We explored hiss room and the battlementss and all the hallwayss. I think Toby didn't like the cold floorss though. And I ssuggessted we get proof of our adventure, you know, sso scientists would believe us and we'd be famouss! Sso Vlad gave me the coin. It'ss not just treassure, it'ss proof!"Iden wasn't aware of these particular powers of Vlad, herself, she was just trying to wrap her mind around him actually playing a game with the two Velvets...a nice game. And she was a bit miffed that somehow she'd never seen this coin before, in all the months Vlad had been around. Granted, it was small.. Like D, she just figured they'd been playing a game of pretend, and Sid was continuing on with it. So she nodded, smiling, and added in, "You know, only eight of those coins are known to still exist. Nine now, I guess. And that one looks in much better shape than the others probably are." Toby's tail thumped against the floor in corroboration with his friend's story. Those floors had been cold! But altogether, it had been a very cool place."Is it that rare?" D turned her head and looked at Iden in amasement. "Well I hope you said thank you to Vlad for giving it to you, Sid. But I think perhaps we might have to start heading home." She gave Iden a smile. "It's getting late... well early really. Thanks for having us over. Say thanks to Vlad too for me, would you? For entertaining Sidney." She scooped up the little reptile and poped him up on her shoulder where he liked to perch. "We should organise a time to meet up at the shop or something, so I can take you back to my place next time. Or I can give you the address and you are welcome to come straight over."Sidney fell quiet, his forked tongue flickering in and out as he pondered. Did they believe him? Or did they just think it was a game. Well, Vlad would set them straight... next time it seemed, since D was making her goodbyes and thanks yous. "Yeah... ok." He said, resigning for now to stop trying to explain their adventure when he had no one else to back him up. "Thanksss Iden and Toby." He peered down at his friend and gave him a wave. "I don't think we can go back in time at my housse. But we can ssstill have ssome fun.""It's mid-15th century, Romanian. I guess if anyone's gonna have something like that just sitting around, it'd be a vampire, eh?" Iden grinned, then nodded. "Ah, it is getting early, for you. I forget about that already! But I was always pretty much a night owl, anyway, so I suppose it's not all that much of a change. It's been wonderful having you over, and you can always come back if you want, now that you know where we are." "Yeah, we should meet up sometime, or I could just come over, whatever you'd rather. Do you have a phone number? I wouldn't want to pop by unannounced and worry your roommate!" She laughed. Toby whuffled up at Sid, tail waving. He would have loved for his friend to stay even longer, but the little dog was getting tired, as evidenced by his sleepy blinking."Well, I can stay up later but I need to make sure I have a nap in the afternoon the day before. Always lots to do in the mornings." D explained. "Ah yes! Here's my number." She added, hastily scribbling it down for the other woman. "Good idea, I don't want Elissa shutting the door in your face. Anyway, give me a ring sometime. I can give you the address then and you can pop round. Thanks again Iden, see you later.""Yeah, bye Toby." Sidney waved down at him, his own tail wriggling. After the adrenalin from their adventure wore off he began to realise just how tired he was.And with that, D and Sidney bade their friends goodbye and headed out, back down the road and on her way home.

Once D and Sidney had gone, Iden scooped Toby up into her arms and leaned back against frame of the still-open door. She ruffled his ears, smiling thoughtfully down at him. "Well, you look like you had some fun, sleepyhead. Wish I could've seen that...must've been a sight, Drac playing pretend!"
Toby blinked sleepily up at Iden as she giggled, then pushed his head into the crook of her elbow, sighing comfortably. He really wished he could talk and tell her it hadn't happened that way, it had all been real, but there wasn't much he could do. The best he could manage was to send the fleeting images of a torch-lit hallway and a thick forest viewed from above.
Iden stared down in surprise at the little dog in her arms. She'd suspected before he might be capable of such things, but it had always seemed quite coincidental, or just her own imagination. And those things...either Toby had a very fruitful imagination himself, or he'd actually seen them.
She frowned, scratching idly along his back. There was the coin Sidney had from Vlad, too, and the snake's mention of time-exploration. Naah...Toby and Sidney just had very active imaginations. People really couldn't go back in time, not even vampires..or ghosts of vampires...
If anyone's got an overactive imagination here, it's me. Iden rolled her eyes, turning to make her way back to the couch, but she stopped just a step away from the door, catching sight of a familiar figure in the hallway. "Hey, Drac.."
Vlad had made his way up from the basement, and was just closing the door behind him. He looked up, eyebrow raised, slow in forming his response. "Da?"
Iden stared at him for a moment, while she felt the slight wag of Toby's tail against her, though his head remained tucked under her arm. The Romanian looked, and even sounded, unusually tired. "I'm just supposed to tell you thanks for entertaining Sidney." She shrugged, then added because she couldn't resist asking, "That coin just been sitting in your pocket while you waited for some kid to give it to?"
"He can be rather entertaining himself," he replied, moving to stand opposite the girl against the other side of the door frame. He shook his head, one long strand of dark hair falling forward. It had gotten a little bit fluffy-looking since drying, but some things couldn't be helped. "If it had been in one of my pockets, I think you would have come across it by now, no?" A slow grin spread across his face. "What, iubita, is this jealousy I'm hearing?"
"Like hell," she snorted impatiently, not deigning to elaborate on an actual answer. "What'd you do, then, pull it out of thin air?"
Vlad laughed, shaking his head again. He'd told Sidney he wasn't likely to be believed, but then, that wasn't too likely to stop most children. "I think you've already been told what I did."
"Oh, come on, you really expect me to believe that?" Iden continued to scratch Toby's back; he'd fallen asleep by now, exhausted. "If it's true, then take me," she challenged, "Show me what you showed them."
"Not really, but it's the only answer you're going to get." He shrugged, honestly not caring whether she believed it or not. He looked away then, out into the night. "No, I will not take you."
"Why not? Because you can't?" She was caught somewhere between triumph, thinking she'd caught him in a lie, and disappointment...because she wanted it to be true, so that she could go, and see.
"No, because I won't take you," Vlad's tone was firm, "I know better than to take you."
"Know better?" Iden's eyes narrowed. "Just what do you mean by that?"
Growling, Vlad stepped closer, taking her chin in his hand. "I know better, girl, because I know you. Once you saw, once would not be enough. You would want to return again and again, and stay for longer and longer. It would never be enough; it would consume you."
That finally shut her up. She couldn't turn her head, but she turned her gaze from his. The most unsettling part was that she knew he was right. But she was also..beginning to believe him, if grudgingly. If it weren't true, he would've just laughed and not answered, or just evaded more; but he'd given her an answer that made sense and rang true.
Satisfied after a moment more, he dropped his hand and turned to go, stepping out onto the porch, then down the steps and onto the path, only to stop when she called after him,
"Where are you going?"
"Hunting."
Iden frowned. He'd fed earlier that night, she knew. What was he going out again for? But it wasn't worth asking. She wasn't above suspicion, though, seeing as D had left for home not long ago. "Drac..."
He just laughed and started on his way again, saying without looking back, "The thought hadn't even crossed my mind, iubita."

September 7
Well, we've run into Dee and Sidney at the shop twice since the last time I bothered to write, and both meetings were pretty eventful for the Velvets, I think.
First Sidney gave Toby a tour of the shop, but that ended kind of abruptly when they got a chocolate bar out of the vending machine for Toby to munch on, and of course it didn't agree with him at all. So I carried him home and Tori took care of him for me. He was just fine by the tme next evening rolled around, a bit sleepy from being sick but hungry as ever. I don't think he'll make the mistake of eating chocolate again, at least, although I wouldn't be surprised if he ever eats something else that winds up making him sick. But if that happens, I'm sure he'll come out alright, since he did this time.
Second time we wound up bringing Sid and Dee over to the house, and somehow he and Toby got down into the basement without our noticing. Turns out they wound up going on a bit of an adventure with Vlad. I thought at first when Sid was telling us about it that they'd just been playing pretend or something, but now I'm not so sure.
I did talk to Drac about it afterwards, and he said something that made me think it's the truth, that they actually did go back in time somehow, to when he lived. It's so strange to think of, though, and really I'm not not sure WHAT I think of it. And I have to wonder how...
Does it have something to do with him being a ghost? I can't see it as some kind of vampire power I wasn't aware of, not that I know much about those outside of books and him, and to a very little extent myself...well, whatever it is, I have to admit I'm puzzled.
Anyway, Toby at least seems more okay with him than he did before, I guess since he was nice to them and took them on their adventure. I hope it sticks, I don't need him getting it in his head to try and fight him over something again..

September 13th
Well, let's see? When Toby was a plush, I used to keep him in my lap while I played games and stuff, so not long after the move I started to do it again, now that he's..well, aware. Decided to start out with Sierra's old Quest for Glory series, just because that's always been one of my favorites.
We finished the first (Quest for Glory I: So You Want to Be a Hero) early last month, which I think is the best of the five, although the third's very dear to my heart as well. Anyway, we played it through as a warrior, because it's a bit more straightforward than doing so as a magician or a thief. Easier in some ways, especially where fighting's concerned. Although the extra sort of..elements for the other two classes are a lot of fun, I think it's a little easier to get through the game as a warrior; less to worry about.
The basic story is that you play a recent graduate from hero school (a correspondence school, no less), who, searching for fame and a bit of fortune, arrives at the village in Spielburg Valley, desperately in need of...a hero, of course. The Valley's under a curse set by the ogress Baba Yaga, whom the Baron had managed to piss off quite handily some years back. There are all sorts of things to take care of, like a kobold and a nasty band of brigands, and of course Baba Yaga herself, and the baron's son and daughter to save.
It's also a very amusing game, with little extras like very strange ways to die. Being landed on by an angry, bouncing purple blob of jelly called an Antwerp, burning up after a drink of 'Dragon's Breath' at the bar, being danced to exhaustion by annoyed fairies, and eating one too many magic mushrooms. The dryad's not too happy about it if you slash up her flowers, either.
And the meeps! Heheh, it's hard not to love something when you're nicknamed for it. Well, I suppose not hard to hate it, either. But they're so...weird and cute at the same time. All fuzzy and colorful, living in holes and making funny noises.
There's plenty of other stuff, like having to go into the graveyard at midnight to get mandrake, but you need a special potion first so the ghosts don't suck the life out of you. So you have to collect the ingredients for 'undead unguent' so the healer can make it. And she'll pay you for other sorts of ingredients, too, like troll beards and cheetaur claws. Then there's getting a whole lot of fruit for the frost giant outside town, and helping a talking fox out of a trap. All sorts of things. Really it all comes down to helping people, who'll give you information or other things you'll need on your adventure.
Well, after becoming the 'Hero of Spielburg,' we went on to play the second game, which is Trial by Fire, and we just finished that one. I'm not quite as cracked about that one, so I'll be brief this time.
In Trial by Fire, you play the same hero, who has to save the desert cities of Shapeir and Raseir from an evil wizard and the genie he plans to unleash. In the end, you wind up Prince of Shapeir. We played a warrior again, for the same reasons as last time.

October 2
Finished the Quest for Glory series...well, sort of. I've never had the fourth one, and I couldn't manage to, ah..acquire it, I'm afraid. I'm a little sad about that, I must say -- I'd really have liked to finally play it.
But what to say? All the QFG games center around saving a particular country/land, you play the same character, and the friends you make in the previous games tend to show up again as part of the next story. So the basics remain pretty much the same, it's just the details that change.
In 3 you go to a very Africa-based land, Tarna, to help out your liontaur friends, where you get what I think's the most interesting society/culture you encounter in any of the games. It's got a bit more complexity to it. There's the liontaur city, first off, although there's a lot more than just the liontaurs living there; it's a sort of hub, really. But there are distinct classes, with the liontaurs most definitely at the top...there are even certain places in the city only they're allowed in, like the temple. Where of course you go anyway, but thankfully one of the priestesses is a very sensible lady who doesn't get your stupid a** in trouble, just sends you on a mission then gives you something of a reading upon your return.
Out on the savannah are the Simbani, who for all intents and purposes are an African tribe. And in the jungle are the Leopardmen, who are shapeshifter/were sorts. They hate each other, of course, the former being superstitious warriors and the latter being magician-types.
At any rate, you have to solve a couple mysteries and stop the brewing war, which of course has been engineered from behind the scenes by a bad guy...an evil demon wizard, to be specific. Ooh.
There's plenty of silly and random stuff in this one as well, like a drunken aardvark miner who doesn't know when to shut up, the edible Awful Waffle Walker (yes, it is a walking waffle...it's even buttered) for the adventurer who's starving out in the savannah because they forgot to buy rations, and...of all things, another opportunity to kill yourself by overdosing on some mysterious hallucinogenic substance, this time provided by Salim the apothecary. Nice guy, very free with the hookah. Have to wonder if he lets all his customers give it a go...ew. That can't be sanitary. Well, just another bit of pointless amusement.
As for 5, well, I've never been all that fond of that one. Not particularly pleasing to the eye, but hey...it's QFG, and that's good enough for me. This time you're saving a Greek-based country, made up of one large island and several smaller ones. In order to save the place, you end up joining a sort of contest, a series of trials to determine who will be the new king. Once all that's over with and you've saved yet another place, if you did well in the trials you can choose to become king.
A lot of the same sorts of gags run through this one, and you actually meet the guy who runs the correspondence school for heroes you got your start with. You can even get engaged if you're nice enough to your lady of choice, which is an amusing little sidequest; one of your options is even the baron's daughter you saved in the first game, who's come to compete as well. Or, if you like your women less high-and-mighty, and with an attractive accent instead of a German one, there's always the belly dancer.
So, that about does it for those. Guess it's on to King's Quest, next. Should probably finish reading Ivanhoe first, though..

Toby vs. Tor'en Tor'en:
Toby stalked along the porch, dark eyes glittering in the dim light of the half-dead light by the front door. He lifted his head to the breeze, sniffing intently. He was looking for one of Iden's nyokiir, a nightmare 'aura' by the name of Tor'en. The savage little critter had managed to escape his closet early in the afternoon, and promptly taken a dive at Tori before speeding out an open window.
His sister wasn't much worse for wear, just sporting some shallow clawmarks on her forehead, but it was the principle of the matter. You weren't supposed to hurt girls, and Tori was his sister, so that only made it all the worse. So now, her brother was out for some revenge.
Of course, there were bound to be a few complications...the source of which being that the nyokii could fly, and Toby was landbound. He didn't really leave any scent trail that would be easy for the dog to follow, and even if he did find him, well...Tor'en was up there, and Toby was down here; he couldn't exactly reach. Short of the remote possibility that Tor'en landed somewhere within Toby's reach, there really wasn't a whole lot he could do.
Unless...he could get Tor'en to come to him. It shouldn't be all that hard, really. After hours of being out, the nyokii was sure to come back to the house sometime soon. So all Toby had to do, theoretically, was hang out in the open and wait for him to come around. Tor'en looooved to swoop down and harry unsuspecting people and animals, but he'd never had a good shot at the Velvet when Iden wasn't around. He wouldn't be able to resist the opportunity!
Hopping down the porch steps, Toby surveyed the yard. There were plenty of other critters around, mostly pooka and a couple of the nicer nyokiir. Nothing out of the ordinary. Satisfied, he padded through the dying flowerbed to one side of the path to the house, crouching low to sneak up on the green leaf pooka just a few feet on the other side. He pounced on it, eliciting a surprised squeal, and set to nibbling at its fur. It really didn't taste very good, but he wasn't doing this for the enjoyment of it...if he'd wanted a tasty pooka, he'd've hunted one out. This was all just a ruse to make himself look unsuspecting, like he wasn't paying any attention. The perfect target.
All the while he had his head tilted just so as he nibbled idly away, keeping an eye on the night sky. Just when he was starting to wonder if Tor'en would ever show up, and the pooka had long since resigned itself to being drooled on, he spotted something small and inky-dark moving across the stars. He thought for a moment that he might get passed up, but true to his nature, Tor'en dove for what he thought was an unwary victim.
It was hard to keep up his pretense of pooka-nibbling with a little gryphon plummeting towards him, but luckily he didn't have to for very long. Finally, painful scratches imminent, Toby tensed and sprang, leaping up and right into a very surprised Tor'en.
They slammed into each other, Tor'en's claws missing Toby more by fortunate chance than by design. But they did wind up all tangled with each other, and fell to the ground in one hissing, growling, writhing pile. Any further plans or ideas Toby had had were quickly forgotten, as the struggle and the fight became the only thing he cared about. The want for revenge and to defend his sister became secondary; that was what had started it, but once begun, the fight perpetuated itself.
In the minute that followed, the racket the combatants made grew, and feathers and fur flew every which way, until finally the darker form managed to untangle itself and push away, taking to the air again. After hanging unsteadily several feet above the ground, he squawked angrily down at the Velvet, then winged off on a wobbly flight path towards the trees behind the house, leaving a few more of his already-sparse feathers behind in his wake.
Toby didn't deign to reply, just picked himself up off the ground and shook, shaking loose a bit more fur in doing so. Once his retreating opponent was out of sight, he surveyed the damage, craning his head around to get a good look and sniff at himself.
He'd come out of it pretty well, really. He was a bit banged up, sure to be sore in the morning, with some scratches here and there, but nothing major he could see. A few of the scratches trickled blood, and he'd gotten a scrape from Tor'en's beak that stung pretty nastily, but it was nothing that wouldn't heal. He sure did have a headache, though.
Lowering his head to sniff at one of the feathers Tor'en had left behind, he wrinkled his nose because the feather tickled it, and sneezed powerfully. That was what finally made him aware of a particularly painful set of scratches on the bridge of his nose; maybe he'd been a little too quick in assuming everything was a-okay.
He tried to cross his eyes and get a better look, but that didn't work too well. All he knew was that the longer he sat here and the more he thought about it, the more it hurt. Huffing, he licked his muzzle clean of the blood that was threatening to drip onto the ground and started to limp his way back to the house.
Something told him Iden would be less than thrilled when she got back from wherever she'd gone, but right now he wasn't too worried about that. He just wanted his mommy to get home so she could clean him up and make the hurting go away.
