Aries Angel is right... many and most consumers in japan are girls. Thus many products are marketed towards four main money makers for toys 1. Little kids 2. School girls 3. Adults (mostly women) who like to reminsce and buy products for nostalgia 4. Hikikomuris

Plushie-heartless Aiko_589 it depend what kind, bery hardcore, or yaoi with sex i don tlike, yaoi with maybe love between to men, i can TOLERATE Aw, you'll learn. *laughs maniacally* Japan itself is obsessed with cuteness. PumpkinMush, I read that article. It turned my brain to much by the end, but, ah, I think I understand...somewhat. But, why not be cute? I don't think being cute and friendly ever hurt anyone! i guess living in japan does not help does it? ( ̄▽ ̄) *laughs in victory*

You know that site that was mentioned in the first page of replies? They spell Kawaii 'Kawai'. Isn't that something different?
But really, you're lucky if your brain survives the entire article. I got to like the part after Anomie or whatever it was and my brain was already dribbling out my ears.

You know, in that article, they seem to think that Japan likes to be sexual. But I spent a month in Mexico and...o.O. Dad says America is just sheltered.
Seriously! There was jewelry with sick designs like it'd take serious thought to think up. Why bother?! It's not Japan that's being bad, it's just the way America sort of shelters us in some ways I think.

I've heard 'kawaii' used a lot in anime...well, not a lot because the anime wasn't exactly about that sort of thing, but like whenever they mentioned something being small and innocent and helpless, they'd use that word.
I do agree that it is overused though. It's like the first word other than 'Konnichiwa' (pronounced by many Anime losers as 'kuh-nee-chee-wah ><) Anime losers learn.
By Anime losers, I mean the sort of people that really get on my nerves: obviously have no other reason of learning Japanese than anime, tacky fangirls, love the really mainstream/stinky anime. Man, there was this girl in my grade who used to greet all the teachers with 'Kuh-nee-chee-wa' last year. She was very obviously white, was commonplace knowledge that she likes anime (though I've never seen her engaged in any other form of Japanese culture), and was my very definition of Anime loser. That made me so mad. She said 'Kuh-nee-chee-wah' without even realizing that it didn't mean just plain 'Hello'. That was the only word she knew...or thought she knew.

I can't stand being around her anymore. -__-; heart &hearts heart

I must agree those girls that che_hyun mentioned are quite annoying (especially when they say things wrong), but I do still like using the word kawaii for said things. Why not?
