Nanie Chama mew_mew_mi-chan Nanie Chama Wow, nice list! I'm putting that into the first post! Thanks! I feel flattered ^^ You're welcome ^^ Out of curiousity, where would you go to get a personal alarm?I got mine at a drugstore. If you go to a grocery store or Wal*Mart they should be in the checkout lanes. If you can't find them you should ask someone who works there. Most places have them now.

Rather than a trumper mouth peice, which is pretty small, i suggest a TUBA mouthpiece. biggrin That thing can leave a mean bruise. 3nodding A lady I know says it's always nice to have a somewhat large ring to wear if you're out, and have to punch a few scumbags. biggrin

I will totally have to check walmart now! It's just called a personal alarm right? There's no really fancy super hi tech name that I'll forget is there?

All of these are such great tips.
Sadly, pepper spray is illegal where I live.

I don't know if it's been mentioned before but I read once that if someone approaches you and they seem suspicious if you're, say, in an elevator and a guy walks on it's best to ask a few open ended questions like "So how about that weather?". Not only does it seem more polite for those who have no bad intentions, but for those that do it actually gives them reason to turn away. Why you may be wondering? Well if they have to talk or say something then that makes it so much easier to catch and identify them later on so if they say something they'll think twice.
Also traveling in groups is almost a MUST. It's the easiest way to prevent almost anything and it's simple and fun.
Oh yeah, I used to have a personal alarm when I was younger. You pull out the string and it emits an ear shattering alarm so anyone nearby will come to check it out. 3nodding except the only time it ever went off I tripped and accidentally pulled the pin out. :p

I'd be someone that'd accidentally do something like that XD

Drywater This is a good idea to make into a thread, especially if you attend conventions and like to stay late before returning to your hotel. ^^ My mom once taught me a little trick where you take your housekey, put the handle end against your palm and make a tight fist around it so the sharp end that you stick into the the door is poking out between your index and middle fingers. It's discreet, and you should do this when going through parking lots or dark places without a lot of people because you can use that sharp jagged edge as a quick and easy to maneuver blade. Plus, you can prolly catch most creeps off-guard because it looks like you're unarmed. whee I do this when I'm walking to my car after work. makes me feel better. this is a great thread! <3

I would advise against using a weapon unless absolutely nessecary. If someone were to say, attack you in the night and you clawed their face up with a carkey, it would be your word against theirs in court, and they would have proof, namely the scars on their face, and most likely you'd be the one to be in trouble. Of course there may be a time where self-defense is required, but prevention is always the best course of action above hurting someone.

Something else useful, though maybe a touch expensive.........
The most wonderful and classic invention in the world....
The Boob Knife. domokun It's a tiny knife that snuggles down in your shirt between the breasts, and usually (hopefully x.x) comes with a little cover for the blade. I used a rather small one-bladed pocket knife at a con last year and it made me feel quite safe...
I'm just sad I didn't get a chance to actually whip it out.... emo
Most of the time, my friend's mother told me (she has a lot of experience with this. xDDDD), you don't even have to use it. Especially at a con. Most of the scary stalker nerds would get frightened by the sight of a weapon and hightail it.
The best thing I think ANYONE could do though, is invest in a nice martial arts class. I was in Tae Kwon Do for two years and it was VERY useful for me. It's worth every penny as long as you make sure you actually learn stuff. I say if you've got the money, go for it.

These are all really awesome tips... they should be posted here in the dorms. Some people here need to learn a thing or two about living in the big city... we are only high schoolers, after all. Quote: -Take the elevator not the stairs (and I liked the stairs too... Eh... I don't think I agree with this one. If someone is following you and they get into the elevator with you, it's their prime chance to hurt you. It's an enclosed space with no escape. I can run up the stairs faster than I can get out of an elevator.

I agree...you can also push your assailant down the stairs if need be. >.> And stairs echo, so if you scream, someone is more likely to hear you.

-Stay away from scary looking people -Don't acknowledge their existance (but stay very cautious)
"Its sad that we have to judge books by their covers these days. We have to be safe right? My mother once said this to me... "Its just as important to ignore a "bad looking" stranger, than it is to ignore a "nice looking" stranger."
All people could be seeking for prey. It isn't all ways the creaps that date rape people. Sometimes its those nice looking guys.
When walking to a car, have the key in your hand (not in your bag). Preditors love to get people when they are fumbling with their keys. *GREAT HOLIDAY AT THE MALL ADVICE!*

this is a really great thread, especially for this type of guild.
we always stay at cons really late so when we walk back we always go in a huge group for safety.
nothing more to add though, except always have atleast one other person with you and if someones making you parinoid leave-- make up and excuse or anything but first instincts tend to be correct.
