Next to her stood Darsais, also seeming somewhat indifferent to the weather.
"We should take the Lady out," she said, nodding to the little ship whose mast was just visable over the top of the dune. Nereida shook her head.
"Nah, the ocean's too rough," she sighed, frowning at the waves. "Remember last time we took her out in weather like this?"
Darsais nodded thoughtfully and some thunder rolled in the distance as if concurring.
"Want to go see if Gage and Jack and Deirdre want to play videogames?" she asked, trying to change the subject. She tried not to bring up what had happened the last time they'd hung out with the boys, and it seemed that Nereida's mind skipped that point as well.
"Okay," she replied happily. "Race you to their patio!"

"Hellooo? Anybody home?' called Darsais. They'd been knocking on the door for ten minutes to no avail. "I guess not." She pressed her face against the sliding door in frustration, looking for any signs of life, and was surprised to find the apartment to be completely devoid of habitation. All the furniture had been moved out. "Hey, Ner, look at this."
"Huh?" the green girl asked, joining her sister at the door.
"It looks like they moved away. Let's go home." Darsais turned around and started to head back over the dunes, but Nereida stood frozen a while longer in front of the vacated house.
Why would Gage leave? And why would they go without telling her anything?
