Andy1989 What do the metal ones sound like? I'm talking more of the Contras than anthing else...Since the metal 'normal' Clarinets have pretty much died out...But with Metal Vs. Plastic Contabass/Contralto...which sounds better? And do they make wood Contras? I've never seen those and I've only heard the metal ones before... Oh, I'd forgotten. I've seen a metal "normal-sized" clarinet before, at my great-uncle's house. Rickety old thing it was; looked like it would fall apart if someone tried to play it. I sit near a metal contrabass in Symphonic Band, but I've never heard a wooden or plastic one, so I can't compare them.

Well, our school's lucky to have the one contra (let alone someone who likes to play it), no matter what it's made of. We don't even have an instrument room, and the drum closet is tiny.

Hehe...I maybe getting off topic, but shoot me lol..
Durza: You don't have an instrument room at all? But where does everyone store their instruments? Most of our room is filled with a bunch of really old instruments that no one plays...they're just in there for a rainy day I s'pose....our drum room isn't very big either...more like a hole in the wall..yet they still manage to stuff a ton of crap in there lol
And to get back on topic for a moment....I actually got my Clary out and practiced tonight! Yay! Against my BD's wishes! Yay! sweatdrop And I can still play it! Yay! lol

Just another problem that comes from outgrowing an old school and not having enough funds for a new one. *misses instrument room of middle school in Texas* Everything's big in Texas. But you should see the band room! It practically is our instrument room now, especially during marching season, with all the xylophones and everything. The percussion practices there; the band has to go on the stage. And years and years' worth of trophies piled on every available surface, including on top of the soda machine (at least we have one of those). You'd think all that recognition would get us a bit more clout, and room to breathe. *is done ranting now* If I tried to talk about this offline, I'd be preaching to the choir, since everyone I know is in band or doesn't care. And I'm glad to hear about your clarinet. How can you get bad at any instrument if you're in practice with all of them?

I understand what you're talking about...Our middle school was like that...We just had tables and everyone placed their instruments under them....But in our high school instrument room, every wall is covered in these huge shelves (I know they're huge because I scrubbed them all...darn splinters)......Think of it this way....I can fit my sousa case on these shelves eek ....Wait a minute....You have a stage in your band room? eek wow...Wait a minute...exactly how big is your band room? eek And it's easy to get worse at one instrument if you don't practice in awhile...I'm ashamed to admit that the last time I practiced my clarinet was back in the summer...before last night of course...It's also easy to get out of practice if your primary instrument is now brass....a minor mouthpiece difference wink

eek
How big IS your band room now that you're talking about it? whee xd We have a hall called "Simpson Hall" named after the old band director who directed there for thirty years, and according to my brother who was witness to this, Simpson just got up and left the bandroom during practice, giving rise to Jones. whee Anyway... eek ...all through Simpson Hall we have these weird brown locker things, the "band lockers". (I don't use mine. >_> ) And right next to them are the lockers with the uniforms. Then the band room, which isn't big, but not small either, and I've been in the sousa closet and it's actually kinda big. eek Never been in the percussion's little room though, and I'm afraid to try. xp whee
Gah, Friday I saw several people barefoot on the bandroom floor. It was kind of disturbing, because the only cleaning they do is to sweep it, and that's usually once every two weeks. gonk <---off topic, yes, but one of those people WAS a clarinet. 3nodding

Our band room is small. Well, not really small, but not big enough. I know all about your shelves, we have shelves for everything from flutes to sousas, except that they don't have a seperate room. The shelves are in the band room. During marching season, the percussion and guard practice during school, but the winds don't, we have two concert bands, during 5th and 6th period. The percussion and pit take up the entire band room, and you can't play in the same room as them anyway, so we go across the hall to the auditorium to practice. What's ironic is that the Jr. High (which used to be the high school, and is attached to the "new" high school) actually does have a tiny instrument room, and a few lockers in the band room. In fact, I'd say the jr. high band room almost has more floor space than the high school band room. Huh.

Durza the Shade Skye of Thunder Anyway, I marched clarinet for two years before switching to brass....that was two years ago but I still remember much of what it was like hehe.....I think the hardest thing I had during the first part of every band camp was keeping my mouthpiece from knocking against my teeth...hehe...the good ole days....There was one thing that always bugged me when I marched clarinet though...IT WASN'T LOUD ENOUGH! lol.....of course...wood clarinets are like that 3nodding I have two clarinets, my new wood one for concert band, and my old plastic one for marching. I'm certainly one of the loudest in my section, which is good, because I can usually be relied on to be in time . . . usually. The plastic probably has something to do with that; it's certainly louder and easier to play than the wood one, but of course, it doesn't sound as good. Same here, I have my old plastic clarinet for marching, and my nice, pretty wood one for everything else. Probably the worst thing about Marching Band is that theres a part of our field show where I have to cross through two tubas: My friend Nicholas, and my ex boyfriend Jon. Now, they both have NO problem with trying to smoosh me, and I had to get my older, more intimidating friend to make them stop. . .which was fun. biggrin
