It's far from a long shot and it doesn't always affect the occupants. The on board computers can calculate the exact improbility of something occuring and thus it occurs.
Battle Ship 666 was a failure that Thanos felt like getting SOME use out of. Long story short, it was basically a much faster moving Death star. Taa 2 is also very powerful.

Anyone who hasn't read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy needs to buy it or borrow it from their local library... NOW! Required reading for all reaonably clever human beings.
And yeah... Heart of Gold could probably turn Macross into a giant tuna or something... or turn its occupants into tenor saxophones. Whichever is more improbable.
