.......Okay.... then... if there's no money, why bother?

Oh, he knew. Knew about those damning things like kinship and loyalty - but he'd done an excellent job a long time ago of making sure those things didn't rule his life. Sure, it was cool to watch someone else's back if you liked them well enough - but there were lines all over the place, and by the suggestion of the web of scars knitted across Vain's back and the tenderness with which he treated Skittles, the demon had gone a little further beyond 'liking them well enough'.

Bah. "Is he a vegetable?" he asked, tactfully considering what he could've, "Or a fruit?"

It was just a hunch, but Alex was willing to bet that had something to do with the flower tattooed onto Skittles' left shoulder. Things had a way of being significant like that, to his experience. Which left the question of the masks...

"That is new," he commented curiously before reaching over the table to poke Marks for the question. "Behave."

Marks merely raised an eyebrow at him before turning back to Vain.

"Either, a Hyacinthine flower. The flower said to arise from a god's lover when he was killed in a blind rage. What else to create the ultimate vampire from but one that was birth from blood?" Vain questioned, looking at Marks then Alex. "Stolen technology the Vanguard created, they perfected and then twisted the purpose making a whore instead of a general."

"The scars across my back are from training. They slaughtered my clan for the information and took me and other children they thought useful for slaves," he smiled bitterly. "Keep this a secret mind you. I do not want info about Skittles being a plant out in public." The vampire shrugged. "The only reason you know now is he need to hydrate himself."

A frown tugged at Alex's lips. Skittles' words had hinted but... but he hadn't quite caught the whole truth. But now, with those indelible words - 'making a whore instead of a general'.... He wasn't sure what was more offensive, that anyone should be created for the exclusive purpose of satisfying others' less than spiritual lusts or that anyone should be engineered at all. It felt so... ungenuine, so wrong.

And it brought him to a sadness. "Oh..." he said by way of reply, resting his chin once more on a hand as he watched the contented flower on the counter. "Perhaps it's a good thing... that you're here now, then."

Hahaha. Keep a secret? Oh yeah, sure. For as long as it'd give him the advantage for it to remain a secret - which yes, included blackmail. "What, you afraid people will try to plant him permanently?" he asked simply.

"I'm sure he'll have no trouble finding them," Alex said in bemusement, "Skittles is... very personable." That and he reeked of both energy and something not unlike genuine interest in others, even if he often talked enough to fill up an entire conversation on his own. It was endearing.

"Besides, this place - Gaia," he reminded himself, "While it is quite strange, it's... a good place. No politics, for one." None that he'd been able to tell, anyway. There'd been that slight mix-up with the actions of some pack leader or another, but he'd never met nor heard of any other than this 'Atticus' who'd wrought so much havoc.

"Don't think you've got much to worry about," Marks echoed, somewhat sullenly. "This place is just about as exciting as death, some days."

Torn between a reaction of amusement or concealing it, Alex decided to chance it with a laugh. "At least your scars are useful for something now?" he suggested.

Marks too was entertained, but in his current mood loath to react in a similar way to Rob and so merely smirked before interrupting. "Yeah, this pack leader s**t - I really don't get it. Apparently I showed up right after the one playing house at our place up and fled. Seems a pretty ineffective way of running things - don't know how much of a government you could call 'em."

Then again, the definition of government was often 'That which seeks to control the people and fails miserably' by Marks' standards, so maybe it wasn't so odd that this 'Atticus' had been missing for so long.

Vain purple iris's danced in amusement. "An interesting way to be used but we did play a few games that way. I always managed to lose." Pleasant times those days. He reached over turning off the running tap. Too much and the delicate roots system would drown, not enough and they would wilt, a delicate balance was needed.

"I hope they would have some sort of answer for us to help explain our current state. Instead Skittles nearly feel into hibernation from radiating chill and I stabbed the pack leader." Vain closed his eyes. "I do not wish to relive that day, but I still wish to talk to a pack leader who do knows what is going on." Information was a key to surival.

Alex attempted to sort things out into a useful reply for Vain. He knew little enough about the pack leaders as it was - though perhaps a tad more than Marks, considering recent circumstances. All he'd been able to glean was from Oliver, as he'd felt it somewhat imprudent to bother Arthur, just in case the situation with Asteil got any more complicated.

"I don't know... if they would be able to tell you," he said hesitantly, "The pack leaders, I mean. ...Very strange things happen every day on Gaia, and though some of that strangeness has manifested in something of a pattern as far as the Anthropomorph society is concerned... I'm not certain any answer you gleaned from the leaders would be either the entire truth or even an accurate one."

Okay, Vain was back on the acceptable list - anyone who stabbed an authority figure was all right by Marks. He was kind of out for having a little chat with pack leaders himself, though not seriously hunting for one, you know? Because it was Three-Eyes' job to get all bitchy at 'em for no (personal) reason. "Yeah, you might wanna try the wimp that high-tailed it," he advised with a cough, "If you don't want any more stabbing sessions, that is."

"Any information would be welcome even if it was not the entire or accurate truth. Some times the basic idea helps to solve complex puzzles." Slotting back the Kansashi needles in there sheaf in his hair, he smiled. "Perhaps I will if I can find where he disappeared to. Otherwise I think, I'll try the demon pack leader. It seems their is one for each breed." Well, it seemed that way at least.

Skittles moved in his sleep, one eye opening sleepily. "Wtach," he mutter sitting up and tried again. "Whact, what about the pack leaders." He sounded frighten, scarlet golden eyes slightly wide. "No, no meeting any more scary people." The techno color mop of hair shook wildly.

He really needed to get the kid a stuff animal. Some other security blanket besides him. "Kitten it's alright," Vain soothed. "I'm not going to track down anyone at the moment," till I figure out what to do with you.. he ended silently. Kitten would become a liability if things got ugly. He really needed to find the fox a babysitter.

Nodding agreeably, Alex shrugged, "Of course. I'm sure there are others out there who would know something about it... But I really can't promise or anything, nor even point you in any general direction."

Marks smirked in amusement at Skittles' freak-out. Scary wasn't limited to pack leaders - nor, to his knowledge, actually a common trait among them. Sure they had the obedience of the natives... for the most part. But enh - they weren't so freaky. Not that he'd met one. But the general idea he'd gotten of Atticus had done much more for his disdain of the pack leaders than his respect.

"I wouldn't worry about trouble from the pack leaders," he yawned lazily, crossing his arms as he settled back into the chair.

Alex winced. He sincerely hoped Marks had no idea where to find explosives... though his bet was otherwise. Skittles' explanation of the encounter with the lamia pack leader interrupted his scolding, however. There was little knowledge of the pack leaders to be had from the other Townies - they were all either as new as he to the general business of this culture or... inaccessible, for various reasons.

But he was beginning to get the impression... what was it that Oliver had said? Something about Atticus and 'chance', as if chance was an elemental entity. That went along with the gist of pack leaders and their elements... and what Arthur had mentioned of Anthropomorphs as manifestations... of nature? "Perhaps... finding the pack leader with most intrinsic knowledge of your state?" he chanced - unaware of there was such a thing.

The information was interesting for Marks as well, gave him a little more groundwork to rely on when he finally went up and had a 'chat' with a pack leader.

"They've got bombs where you come from?" he crossed his arms on the table and quirked an eyebrow at Vain. Yes, he was quite determined to be unhelpful until the last moment. It was mostly cover for the fact that... no, he hadn't bothered finding his own set of dynamite yet, mostly because it just didn't seem necessary. Besides, wasn't that what Three-Eyes was out doing? Scrounging up weaponry to go after something high and mighty.

"Fireworks make lovely explosives when tweaked properly," Vain refused to be frustrated by Marks attitude. He was beginning to expect all those snappy question where to hide his own downfalls. "You don't have dynamite yet? Surprising but I guess fireworks will be find. Home made bombs have always been a fun hobby."

"Things go boom! Pretty multi colors!" Skittles squealed, happily clapping his hands. He was always entrained else where when Vain created the explosives, but he had been allowed to activate a few of them. Nothing attracted his attention like sparkly bright lights.

"Or finding what powers they have and plan a revolt, either way."

"Hm?" said Marks, amused. "How exactly would you plan on using explosives, anyway? Blow up this shop and threaten more death and destruction unless someone answers a couple questions? Hell, that's not so boring, maybe - but it seems a little less efficient."

It felt weird, advising someone against madness and mayhem... but he was probably doing it because he hadn't thought of it first. Oh well. Maybe he'd join in, when the time came. God knew you could only build catapults on rooves for so long.

..............revolt?

........dear God. Good thing Oliver was so distracted... Because... it simply didn't seem necessary, for one - to rebel against a social order that... you didn't really have to obey, if you stayed out and away from things. He thought. He hadn't challenged it yet. But rebellion?

It wasn't that he was opposed to change, and the Hegelian ideal of synthesis was near and dear to his heart but... Oh, indecision rocked the mind so brutally sometimes. "Surely... a single ill-fated encounter isn't worth revolution..." he murmured.
