Grave stepped out past the gates and paused for a moment to breathe deeply of the woody scent of the forests. It all seemed so...vast. As if there was no end to it. Everything in Empyrean City had limits, walls and rules and extents to which one could push oneself. Outside was wilderness and lost land, and wild things and no rules. To be honest, Grave was a little uneasy. He kept his head up and followed along in the line, hoping to get to the plot soon enough.

Danna nodded and relaxed. Her partner was quite pleasant actually. Danna's worries began to melt away, and she focussed on the task at hand. She had her bag nustled firmly under her elbow. In it she'd stuffed Team Delta's gloves, shears, burlap bag for root clippings and a spritz bottle of water and Chamomile. "The forest is amazing, isn't it?" Danna murmured, craning her neck and still failing to see the tops of the trees about them.

Cyphr stomped along, keeping step with the others in the line ahead of and behind him. He continued to eye Aysel out the corner of his eye as they moved along the forest path. She looked pretty thin. Maybe she was ill, after all. She hadn't said she wasn't. What if it was contagious? Cyphr eyed her some more. No, the elders wouldn't put someone contagious in this group; that'd be dumb. "So, which part d'yous want me to do?" Cyphr asked. "I wanna pull lots!"

Ubel was curious about this world that was Outisde... yet, at the same time, he was nervous. He bit his bottom lip as he listened to the Gates opening, stepping out slowly. Pausing beside Grave, he took a deep breath, before smiling softly up at the one. "It's so big," he whispered, then began to walk away, to keep up with his partner and to keep up with Quenda, not wanting to be left alone. He felt so... so lost, so out of his element, in this place. He didn't like it, he was sure.

And then there was Lior, who was thrilled beyond believe over the chance to see this great Outside, so different from the city he was used to. As soon as he stepped out and saw the vastness of it all, heard the sounds, felt the wind... he was hooked. It was so strange and amazing, he wanted to explore, but was apprehensive about doing so - he knew he wouldn't survive out here. So he stayed with the group, doing the best exploring he could from there.

As soon as he had his technoring, Abacus watched the others for a moment, then mimicked them. The headphones were... Well, he quietly decided to avoid looking in a mirror and taking a picture of it. Instead, he snapped someone else's picture before watching the others, then trying to set the device himself. He hoped he didn't get the configurations wrong -- he did not want to haul around a notebook in order to write everything down. Or I'd have to take a bunch of pictures of random things in order to have pictures of what I'm trying to say, he thought, grinning.

He realized belatedly that everyone was getting into their groups, and he didn't know who his partner was. "Lior?" He called out, looking around. When the class moved out the gate, he hung towards the back and looked around for those not with a partner, approaching them one by one. "Excuse me, do you know where I could find Lior?"

Astaroth spotted a rather lost looking peer and frowned as he cast his gaze about, trying to discern if anyone else had missed a partner. When it became apparent that everyone had their partners he gave a quiet sigh and approached Dariyn. If his suspicion was right, this was his partner. "Are you Dariyn? Team Sigma?" He stood before the other, waiting for an answer and hoped he'd guessed right.

In either case, he wasn't about to be left behind and started walking with the others as they moved out, glancing around as they passed through the inner and then outer districts. How very intriguing! After a time, he remembered Dariyn and looked over to him, gaging his reactions to their surroundings as he wondered if the other boy was any good at botany.

Kallisto smiled and bobbed her head in thanks for his compliment, "I could say the same of you. And yes! I'm really excited!" She clasped her hands behind her neck and rocked back on her heels, eye bright and twinkling, "We get to go Outside. That hasn't been done at all in the time I've been here." She pursed her lips as they began moving, "Though I'm a bit nervous as well - I hope I don't let you down with harvesting the Mandrakes...."

When they stopped at the gates, she pause long enough to look up and around in awe. One day she'd pass through a similar gate.... Kallisto's gaze swept over to the Threes that guarded them and hoped she might be as regal and confident as her protectors. Taking a deep breath, she turned to Cashimer and flashed him a bright smile, "Ready!?"

Daggart bounced along beside Antigone, gaze drifting between the Gatekeepers. They looked so cool! And they were so proud! It made his chest puff out as he envisioned himself, all glorified and grown, battling monsters and protecting the city. He greatly enjoyed the thought of helping out like that - keeping things that shouldn't be in out.

Spinning around so he stood in front of Antigone when they paused at the gates, he crossed his arms, "This is so cool! I wonder what we'll see.... You excited? I am!" He grinned broadly as they passed through, his gaze turning up to look at the massive arches as their group passed beneath them, awe struck. When the sound of the forest hit his ears, he blinked and looked forward once more, indicating for Antigone to hurry along so they could better see just what, exactly, this Outside was.

Arron smiled at the small girl that approached him, and bowed at the waist, offering her his hand. "Ah, so you're the lovely Biwa!" He greeted with a wink, "Terribly good to meet you! They tell me we're teammates! How enthrallingly delightful!" And she was pretty indeed, that made this event all the better. He indicated that she should follow him as he stayed with the group...wouldn't do to get lost.

Indigo eyes were wide with silent contemplation as he gazed about this Outside...or at least, that was what he'd heard it called. There was less confinement, and the world seemed infinitely bigger from this angle. Mathiaz hadn't seemed to notice his call, and so with a little smirk, he stepped up behind him and tapped the other Empyrean on the shoulder. "Yo!~"

Dariyn quite nearly squeaked when the tall Melancholy came up to him, and the Phlegm's crimson eyes were wide and he just barely managed a nod. "Uhm...yes...yes I am." He replied meekly, clasping hands behind his back. Oh my he was imposing.

Dariyn was restless as they headed to the outer districts...he rather wished he could have been put on a team with Morrow, then he wouldn't be so afraid of going out! As a student, he was rather interested in what they were here to do...but right now his own nervousness was overriding curiosity.

Cinderfae
Nadyrr nodded slightly to his partner and then glanced around to everyone else as they spoke, it seemed that they were all getting acquainted with each other. Nadyrr wondered if he should be saying more to his partner but then realized he would have very little to say. Nadyrr really wanted to ask some about his change since it was obvious that his partner was a stage one. Biting his lip a little he made sure to keep pace, he suspected that his partner was also mindful of it so he didn't want to slack off.

"Uhm, so your a stage one..." Nadyrr continued to walk but watched the other boy out of the corner of his eye, "does it feel much different?" he blurted out his curiousity getting the best of him and causing his cheeks to flush furiously.

4. So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

6. Rainforests occur where the monthly rainfall exceeds 4 in. (100 mm) for 9–12 months. They merge into other seasonal or monsoon forests where there is a stronger dry season (3 months or more with 2.5 in. or 60 mm of rainfall). The annual mean temperature in the lowlands is approximately 64°F (18°C). There is no season unfavorable for growth.

8. Andras (a type of monster)- The Andras live in the forests north of Empyrean, and are often seen riding on the backs of wolves through the forests. They appear as small men with the heads of owls. This avian creature is about the size of a large goose or turkey. It has the head and body of a cockerel, but wings, and the long tail of a lizard. Its eyes glow with a dangerous-looking crimson sheen.

The cockatrice is an eerie, repulsive hybrid. It is infamous for its ability to turn flesh to stone.
A male cockatrice has wattles and a comb, just like a rooster. Females, much rarer than males, differ only in that they have no wattles or comb. A cockatrice weighs about 25 pounds.

Combat -

A cockatrice fiercely attacks anything that it deems a threat to itself or its lair. Flocks of cockatrices do their utmost to overwhelm and confuse their foes, and sometimes fly directly into their opponents’ faces.

Petrification (Su)
Creatures hit by a cockatrice’s bite attack must succeed on a DC 12 Fortitude save or instantly turn to stone. The save DC is Constitution-based. Cockatrices have immunity to the petrification ability of other cockatrices, but other petrification attacks affect them normally.

Lucis took half notice of his short companion, distracted by the goings-on around him. He took care, though, to listen when Nadyrr spoke. "Yes," he answered simply before continuing, "It does in a way. I can more clearly feel the strength and flow of my essence." He paused, thinking back to his transcendence. "And you get quite a lot bigger quite a lot faster. I was unsure as to where all of my parts where at any given time for the first few days." Though he was a journeyman, he was a smallish Zero himself, and the difference between then and the lofty height he carried now was stark. Lucis offered a half-smile to the Zero next to him, glad of his friendly disposition.

In what seemed like a short span of time, the group had reached the gate, and Lucis found himself staring straight at the Outside for the first time in his life. The uneasiness rolling in his belly did little to dampen the wonderment he felt at gazing to the world beyond his home.

Through the woods they went, the forest growing thicker all the time, though the underbrush had been cleared enough for them to see the path. Then suddenly they came out into a clearing. A ring of old, gnarled, ugly oaks framed the empty space in the middle. Here there was no grass, no moss, just blackened soil, and at its centre Twenty plots of little green leaves.
Quenda made sure her Headphones were adjusted properly and turn to her group, raising both hands for attention. "Here we are, this is the Mandrake crop. Each team has been given a burlap bag for storing any mandrake roots they manage to harvest. Here's where you learn how.
You've also been given a water and chamomile spritzer bottle. Use this to spray on the leaves of the particular plant you are pulling up. If you forget to spray first, they can be quite ornery to pull from the earth. Once you'd pulled one up, it will squirm and writhe, so make sure to keep a good grip. Perhaps get the stronger member of each group to be the one to hold it while the partner cuts. To cut select a limb of the mandrake and pull it seperate from the main body, use the shears provided to n** it off to take a sample no bigger than four inches long. Also, make sure not to take more than four samples from one plant, otherwise the plant won't be able to regenerate itself in time for enxt harvest. Then, replant the remainder using the trowel provided. And that's how one harvests a Mandrake. I'll be at the plot furthest out, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Let's get to work!"

The Gatekeepers kept close, for the most part, as they progressed through the woods but when the group arrived at the Mandrake plot, Lorissa, Vorrian, and Danek faded into the surrounding trees as though some sort of silent order had been issued.

Taevis stayed behind, also possessed of a pair of headphones, and remained within visual range while the others fanned out in a circular pattern to ensure safety from all sides. While they were still close to the city, that did not mean the area was clear of dangers.

Every once in a while a bird-call sounded and Taevis' head would lift, as though listening. The area just checked was clear - good. Never actually settling in once place for long, the Gatekeeper observed the group with a small smile. It was good to see such eager young ones. Which reminded him....

Stepping closer, he cleared his throat and his musical voice, indicative of a bard, rang out, "Do not go beyond the oaks - it's best if you remain close to these plots." While his tone was pleasant enough, it was obviously an order. Nodding decisively, he gestured for the group to continue on and start gathering the mandrakes before taking up his post once more.

User ImageAstaroth noticed Dariyn's fidgeting and nervousness and frowned slightly. He hadn't spoken very much since they'd met, which Astaroth didn't mind, but if they were to get this task done they'd need to work together. Stopping just before the Mandrakes, he turned and gazed down at the other, "Why are you so nervous? This shouldn't be too difficult." As first Quenda spoke and then Taevis, he turned to listen, nodding slightly. It wasn't very hard at all, apparently.

"I shall cut the root if you pull up the Mandrake." He turned back to the other, hoping Dariyn would be strong enough for such a task. "Agreed?"

Day 3 Answers for groups Alpha, Gamma, and Sigma
1. In Druidic Magic, what are Seeds capable of?
……. Storing spells
2. Define a "Cycad".
…… tree resembling palm tree: a tropical tree that has a thick trunk, sharp-pointed leaves like palm leaves, and cones. Order Cycadales.
3. What part of what tree is true Xylitol sweetener sourced from?
…… Birch Bark
4. In Norse Mythology which two types of trees yielded Man and Woman?
…….Ash (man) and Rowan (woman)
5. List ten types of plants poisonous to Humans.
……Poison Oak, Wood Nettle, Aroids, Mistletoe, Black Cherry, Boxwood, Lobelia, Wizteria, Angel’s Trumpet, Belladonna
…….Source1
……Source2
6. Explain the properties of Chlorophyll.
……. In the reaction of photosynthesis, chlorophyll helps the electrons transfer from water (taken in from the roots) to the carbon dioxide that has been taken in. An electron in chlorophyll is then excited from a lower energy state to a higher energy state from light energy that is absorbed through the leaves. This excited electron is now able to transfer to another molecule more easily and starts a chain of transfers until it ends up carbon dioxide. This loss of an electron by chlorophyll results in the gaining of an electron of water. Therefore chlorophyll is the "middle man" for photosynthetic electron transfers between water and carbon dioxide.
In conclusion chlorophyll is able to harness solar energy and convert it to chemical energy that the plant needs.

Chrystali

Enigmatic Gatekeeper

PostPosted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:50 am

Arwen had the distinct feeling of her skin trying to crawl off and race back to the City. She was not in awe of forest, not in the way the other students were; her awe stemmed from something more simple and base, like the fact that the things had to be ancient to have grown so tall. The Outside did not fascinate her in the slightest, but knowledge did. The things these trees must have seen, she mused to herself, What stories could you tell us?

Team Delta

1. In Druidic Magic, what are Seeds capable of?
Acting as a conduit for spell casting.

2. Define a "Cycad".
Any gymnospermous plant of the order Cycadales, intermediate in appearance between ferns and the palms, many species having a thick, unbranched, columnar trunk bearing a crown of large, leathery, pinnate leaves.

3. What part of what tree is true Xylitol sweetener sourced from?
Fiber of the tree (xylan hemicellulose).

4. In Norse Mythology which two types of trees yielded Man and Woman?
Ash & Elm.

5. List ten types of plants poisonous to Humans.
Azalea (Rhododendron), Chinaberry, Daphne Shrub, English Ivy, Golden Chain Tree, Jasmine, Lantana Camara (Red Sage), Laurels, Wisteria Vine, Yew

6. Explain the properties of Chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is the green pigment of plants which initiates photosynthesis by absorbing energy from sunlight and transferring this energy to other molecules. Chlorophyll causes carbon dioxide and water to combine into glucose. Chlorophyll contains enzymes and superoxide dismutase, a copper-containing protein found in mature red blood cells. This enzyme decomposes superoxide radicals in the body into a more manageable form, thereby helping to slow down the aging process.

7. Name the two Old World Locations the Arbutus Tree naturally grew.
Canary Islands, Ireland (western).

8. What ways may medicinal roots be prepared for human application?
Crushed, Dried, Fresh, Heated, Powdered or Squeezed - usually mixed with additives.

9. Which Chakra is used for grounding energy?
Muladhara

10. List the definition and benefits of Ceres Style.
Ceres Style: Ceres style is when you grow all of the required ingredients yourself. It increases the potency of the potions effects, doubling the damage it does.

11. During which Old World Holiday is a tree decorated?
Christmas

12. List three types of Insects that could damage a North American forest.
Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar), pine shoot beetle (Tomicus piniperda), hemlock wooly adelgid (Adelges tsugae).

13. Name two books (fictional or factual) that mention the mandrake plant.
Romeo & Juliet, Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets

14. What is the Old World definition of an Andras?
Andras was a Grand Marquis of Hell, appearing with a winged angel’s body and the head of an owl or raven, riding upon a strong black wolf and wielding a sharp and bright sword. He was also responsible for sowing discord, and commanded 30 infernal legions. He is the 63rd of the 72 spirits of Solomon.

15. Find an image of a Cockatrice.
Cockatrice!

"Remarkable," she murmured as a reply to Danna as well as her own inner monologue. She turned her attention to the Professora as she addressed the gathered, feeling that cold pit of ice in her stomach once more as she realized how far they were from the City. It may not be that great of a distance in theory, but it was OUT of the City, and therefore too far to begin with.

Arwen's throat worked for a moment before she finally squeezed a few words past the fluttering heartbeat in her neck, "Do you think you can hold it?" She held up her hands, which remarkably showed no outward signs of shaking, despite her enormous reservation. "I'm afraid I've not much strength in me."
