Mayu pondered, thinking back at what she had seen during those frightening documentaries. What did all of the stories have in common? Well, other than the people screaming and wetting themselves, that was a common sight.

"Don't creepy old houses usually have ghosts?" She inquired, cocking her head to the side. Well, maybe she had learned that from Scooby-Doo, same difference.

"Most of the time, yes." Loki murmured, drawing gentle fingers over his lantern. Oh, how he wished Lue was still around!

"Why, do you know of one? Or are you still at a loss for any?" He gave a small snort.

"I think," she stressed the word think, "there was one in my old neighborhood from when I used to live in Barton. I don't exactly remember, because I was really little when I lived there." Mayu nodded, reminiscing.

"The neighborhood kids all stayed away from that house, and they said there were weird noises coming from it at night."

She wasn't completely clueless sometimes. Though, she thought, it was a perfectly fine house. Pretty, even! It just needed a little fixing up and tidying, and it would look beautiful.

"Do you think you could lead the way?" Loki curled his fingers on the outside of his lantern, smirking just slightly. He felt a little mischevious all of a sudden, and it was almost like his strength had been renewed moreso than it had been.

Mayu gave a nod and assumed her leadership position, trotting down the sidewalk at a reasonable pace. There was no use moping about what had already taken place, and she was about to make the best of it -- besides, going to a haunted house would be an interesting venture to tell her sisters about!

Navigating the twists and turns that led to her old neighborhood in Barton, she felt a sense of nostalgia as she looked down the streets, identical houses spanning the streets on both sides. Gesturing for Loki to follow, Mayu led the boy down the block to the "haunted" house, an old, two-story wooden house which seemed to be overcast in darkness compared to the cheerful setting of the rest of the neighborhood.

"This is it! I remembered right!" Mayu clapped, in marvel of her own memory. It had only been half a year ago that she had left Barton for Durem, but a bunch of the sights had been forgotten with the move.

Smiling slightly, Loki put a finger to his temples and almost growled with pleasure. "I can sense a spirit in there, but... it does not seem malevolent as of yet..." Drawing up close to her, he grinned as his mouth ended up right by her ear, strangely soft.

"Ladies first."

"As you wish, m'lady," Loki murmured with a bit of a sneer, brushing past her roughly as he entered the house. The stairs creaked as they entered, and Loki swore that he saw feet running up them - his ears folded back as he narrowed his eyes in order to see better.

The feet were gone, and it seemed like he was the only one that saw them. But was he the only one that heard them? Curious eyes turned to Mayu, and that ever-present smirk never disappeared. One could have sworn that the flames on the ends of his scarf danced.

"What's wrong?" Mayu asked, staring at Loki blankly. Had he seen something strange? No, of course not -- then she would have seen it too. Probably just a spider or something. Just to double-check, she glanced about the room: Nope, nothing there. She stepped aside and waited for Loki to lead the way.

Rolling his eyes and giving a snort, Loki took his lantern and swung it around two fingers again, now heading up the stairs.

"If you need to, you can hold my hand," He said in a chiding way, and laughed afterwards. It wasn't long before he disappeared at the top of the steps.

Once they both had arrived, they would be standing in front of an old woman in a rocking chair, her rocker slowly tilting from side to side. It was a rather strange rocking chair, in such a way from the normal which went forward and backward, but then again, they weren't dealing with a normal old lady.

Even though she looked normal.

"Old Mother Hubbard... sat in her cupboard... eating her old dog's bones..." Loki took a step back, holding out an arm to prevent Mayu from going any further. This woman was dangerous; he remembered briefly of Io reading fairy tales to both him and Vavalion in the short time he was there, and he knew that the rhyme did not go that way.

"Old lady, it goes like this. Old Mother Hubbard, went to the cupboard, to get her dog a bone."

"Not in this story..." Came the strange voice, and the woman began to rise.

When she turned, the woman looked horrific; eyes sunken, teeth resembling a pihrahna's...

Evil, simply put.

Mayu shot Loki a glare and followed him up the dusty stairs. As she arrived at the top, she recieved quite a shock -- she had not expected an old lady to be there. She had almost tumbled backwards, but caught herself just in time.

The old lady's voice was chilling to the bones, and Mayu's eyes widened as she shot a glance at the boy, a look of confusion and fear.

A squeak rose from her throat as the woman rose from her seat and turned towards them. Her face was ... frightening, to say the least. A scream threatened to rise from the girl's throat, but came out as several small squeaks. Her heart was racing, adrenaline pumping ... She was regretting having tagged along in the first place, or even suggesting to go to the house.

"This is what a spirit is. They feed on the living, always yearning to become what they once were." Loki stated in a serious tone, drawing the book on his side up and opening it with gusto. Flipping through pages quickly, Loki finally found what he was looking for, and raised an eyebrow. So it was like that, was it?

So, what he originally thought was true. There were different types of spirits, and he knew that Lola was one of the good kind, as well as Lue. But others, such as this one...

She needed to be exorcised.

"Stand back, Mayu." The hyena boy ordered, stepping forward, but completely missing the old woman's point entirely.

She had thrown a potted plant straight at Mayu with surprising speed for an old woman such as her, and Loki had no time to react.

Quite the notorious plant, it seemed...

"Are they always like ... like that?" Mayu managed in a shaky voice, staring at the specter before them. Hobbling back a few steps, Mayu grimaced at the sight; she knew this would be something she would never forget.

And just then, she had noticed the pot flying at her swiftly.

"Oh, godda--" That was about the closest to swearing she was ever going to get.

"Mayu!" The hyena boy spoke out angrily, turning swiftly to see if she was alright.

Now the spirit had pissed him off. Whirling to the old woman, Loki's scarf billowed out and spread fire along the ends, sparks flying all around him as he ran at her. The book was dropped to fall neatly at his side as his fist swung, opening to grab the spirit's hair and yank to the floor.

"Go back from whence you CAME!" His nasty comment was hissed, as he shoved his lantern in her face, immediately getting a high-pitched screech from her throat.

"Oww ..." The flowerpot had smacked Mayu straight in the face, leaving a red mark after it fell with a crash to the ground. "I'm okay!" She said, though a bit unsure of herself. Touching her hand to her forehead, she felt a drop of blood drip down from the wound the pot had caused, and she groaned at the thought of returning home. She was going to get it for running off like that.

Shaking the dizziness from her head, Mayu looked up; she was sure that she would never be able to do that in her life, confront an evil spirit like that. She clasped her hands against her ears as the screech rang out, it was deafening, and triggered a small jolt of pain in the back of her head. "Ow!"
