Hawk Man!!!

It was a quiet morning.

"Hawk Man! Hawk Man! Hawk MAAAANN!!!"

Scratch that. It would have been a quiet morning, except that Gavin had dragged Remi out of bed three hours earlier than normal. She was starting to regret that she accepted that hideous Hawk Man action figure from Baniru and Osha. Thanks to Haki--she guessed--Gavin had learned that other things exist on the television other than the news. This morning, he was determined to watch Hawk Man, the cartoon show.

"Quiet down Gavin," Remi rubbed her eyes, still half-asleep. "It's too early for that kind of energy. Especially on a Saturday."

She grabbed the remote and started flipping through the channels. All the doll said was that the show started at 6am. It was now 5:50am. She had ten minutes to surf through all her channels until she found the right show, or else Gavin was going to hyperventilate from excitement.

After channeling through Spanish soap-operas, low-grade cooking shows, and infomercials ("Since when did people need nail-clippers that double as a laser pointer?"), she finally landed on Hawk Man: Tales of the Feathered Hero.

"HAWWWWK!!! MAAAAAAN!!!" the television screamed loudly as the overly-used heroic theme song blasted.

"It's him!" Gavin waved his action figure, pointing it at the television screen excitedly. Remi could only laugh. If anything, it looked worse in animation than in doll form. Blue hair, camoflauge, and complete with your standard superhero outside underpants. The cartoon hero posed heroicly, which Gavin immediately tried to emulate. This only proved to make Remi laugh harder.

As the show progressed, Remi was vaguely amused as it followed the standard hero show forumla. The evil archnemesis, Cobra Guy, set out to do the dastardly deed of destroying the world. But never fear citizens! Hawk Man has come to save the day with his sharp talons and kung-fu fighting. Though Gavin was riveted throughout the whole show, never taking his eyes off the screen even for commercials, Remi snerked her way through it. Since when could anyone take over the world by throwing all the world leaders into a pit of poisonous snakes? And even better, how could "Deception Strike of the Short-tempered Hawk" possibly be an attack? Just the thought sent her into another giggle fit. Surely she didn't watch things this stupid when she was little.

When the ending credits began to roll, Remi slumped down further onto the couch. In a way, it had been worth the early morning since she'd gotten a good laugh out of it. Gavin was busy zooming around with his Hawk Man action figure, still on an adrenaline rush from the show.

"I'm Hawk Man!" Gavin squeeled, posing just as Hawk Man had at the beginning of the episode. Remi snorted again.

"You need blue hair to be Hawk Man," Remi said plafully. Gavin paused to consider this, pulling at a strand of his own orange-red locks.

"Mommy," he said sweetly. The kind of sweetly that every toddler uses when they want something. "Make my hair blue?"

Remi blinked. Gavin didn't need to be dying his hair at this young an age. Especially not something as unnatural as blue. That would just be strange. Plus, all those clothes Natalie was making would have blue, so technically that was also a reason that wouldn't be a good idea.

She shook her head. "Not now, Gavin. Maybe if you're really good I can make your hair blue for Halloween or something. How does that sound?"

"Blue hair! Blue hair!" he chanted, jumping up and down. "When's Halowin?"

"HallowEEn," Remi reiterated, trying to get him to say the words correctly. He'd been improving a lot over the past few weeks.

"Halloweeen," Gavin repeated, this time saying it mostly correct.

"Good," Remi smiled, picking up her son and putting him in her lap. "Halloween's just a while away. You get to dress up and everything. If you want, I could get Natalie to make you a full Hawk Man costume."

"Yes!" Gavin flapped his wings excitedly, throwing his arms up in the air. Halloween was going to be the best day EVER in his entire life. He could be Hawk Man, and then he'd really be the hero. Haki would be proud of him, or so he thought.

Still, he would have to wait until that time came.

Chloe Arrives

Ever since that last night with Thorn, Remi had always been careful to lock her door.

Therefore, it came as a great surprise when she found a vaguely familiar person in the middle of her living room when she returned from the bookstore nearby.

"Ah..."

At first she began to panic, her mind immediately jumping to Thorn, until a more than familiar British accent filled her ears.

"Remi!" the young woman nearly threw herself at her in an embrace. It took Remi a second to register a name with the voice.

"...Chloe?" she pulled back slightly to look into the other woman's face. Same charcoal black hair, same high cheekbones, same unmistakable ice-blue eyes. Chloe gave a feigned expression of hurt.

"Remi I'm hurt!" Chloe put her hand to her heart. "You send me a note for the first time in years, I spent two hours trying to find this place, then another twenty minutes trying to pick that damned lock of yours, and you don't even have the decency to remember who I am!"

Remi blinked. Picked the lock? Oh yes, that was how they'd gotten into most of their troubles during college. Chloe had been a natural at getting into places she wasn't supposed to, such as teacher's facilities, building rooftops, and other generally hard to open doors. If it took her twenty minutes to get past the lock on the door, then Remi knew she was well protected against Thorn if he ever tried to break in her apartment.

"Of course I remember you!" Remi returned the embrace. "I just...thought you might have been someone else."

"Oh," Chloe pulled back, drawing out the word with a catlike grin. "Were you expecting someone?"

Remi paused. Chloe didn't need to know about the whole situation here regarding Thorn. If anything, she would try to do something and that would probably make things worse.

"No, but lately people have been showing up in my apartment without my knowing," she laughed sheepishly, before hastily changing the subject. "So how've you been? I haven't seen you since I graduated."

"Well," Chloe said dramatically, letting Remi know this was going to take a while. "The semester after you got your undergrad, I got my graduate work done. Now I've landed myself an amazing job in the city as a designer."

"That's great!" Remi led her toward the couch, so they could talk more comfortably. "I always knew you'd do well. Do you want anything to drink?"

"I'm fine," Chloe said, motioning for Remi to sit next to her. "Plus I know you don't keep any alcohol—god knows why."

"I have a toddler now remember?" Remi arched a brow. "I can't have alcohol in the fridge with Gavin running all over the place."

Chloe's eyes brightened. "Oh yes! Tell me about your new son. At first I was scandalized until I read that it was given to you. I thought my little Remi had lost her virginity without even letting me meet the guy first."

Remi blushed a bright red.

"Oh no," Chloe paused, staring at her friend. "You did! Didn't you?"

Her friend launched herself in another embrace. "You have no idea how long I've waited for this day. You always were such a wallflower. For a while I thought maybe you were asexual. So who's the lucky guy?"

Remi blushed harder. Her voice came out weakly due to the embarrassment. "His name's Stephan. He lives in another building here."

Remi still didn't regret what she did, but that didn't mean she didn't worry about whether or not she made the right decision day in and day out. She'd gotten lucky that there weren't any repercussions...this time. And she knew not to depend on that luck in the future.

"But Gavin!" Remi desperately tried to pull the topic elsewhere. "Let's talk about Gavin. You just have to see him."

"Well of course I'm going to see him!" Chloe said emphatically, though Remi wondered if she was thinking about Gavin or Stephan. Possibly both. "Where is the little guy?"

"Hold on right here," Remi gestured for her to wait. "I'll bring him out."

She rushed off to Gavin's room, where the little hawk boy had been trying his hand at coloring again. Except this time he going for more abstract art. Instead of using the coloring books whose lines mocked him at every stroke, he had white paper that he could scribble on freely without fear of 'going out the lines.' However, the colors were frustrating him, so he welcomed Remi's arms as she picked him up to take him to the living room.

"Oh. My. God," Chloe's eyes widened in shocked amazement when Remi returned. She brought her hands to her mouth to hide her excitement. "Remi...he's absolutely beautiful!"

Her voice got progressively louder until it cracked at the last word. With that Chloe rushed over.

"Can I hold him?" she asked, though Remi didn't have a chance to answer as the other woman whisked Gavin away in her own arms. Gavin was...confused to say the least. Who was this new person? He was supposed to greet new people, right?

"Hello," he smiled, making Chloe giggle slightly. Truthfully, she was more interested in the wings than the fact he was a toddler. She smiled back, "Well hello! I'm your auntie Chloe."

Gavin blinked. Auntie? He'd never heard that word before. Still, he wanted to mimic the sound.

"Auntie Klo!" he tried, not able to grasp the vowel sounds at the end. Chloe smiled again and handed him back to Remi.

"For a little kid, he's really cute," she commented. Remi looked back at her with a slightly bewildered expression.

"I don't remember you ever liking children all that much," she said, remembering clearly the night them and all their other friends had sat around talking about their futures. Chloe had flat out said she would never have children. So when the woman acted all cutesy with her own son, it made her slightly suspicious.

"I don't," Chloe said simply. Remi set Gavin down, letting him choose whether or not he wanted to stay to here them chat. Gavin paused to consider his options, and decided that coloring would be more interesting—if frustrating—than listening to grown-ups talk in words he couldn't understand.

"So...then that was...what?" Remi arched a brow, referring to the motherly outburst a few seconds ago.

"Well, I'm going to have to get used to it I think," Chloe sighed tiredly. She lifted up her wrist to reveal a leather cord wrapped around it with a glowing crystal dangling from a fastening. "I'm in the same situation you are. Mine just hasn't shown up yet."

Remi blinked again. "That's going to turn into a kid?"

As if she were one to talk. Gavin had come from a floating ball of energy.

"Apparently," Chloe smiled. "Something about this place called Ruesaiah and a disease, and angry something or other. But I'm going to be a mother soon."

"How are you going to pull that off?" Remi asked. "What with your job and all?"

"That's the other reason I'm here," Chloe smirked mischievously. "I know you work at home, so I figured I could get you to babysit for me when he arrives."

Remi paused. "Chloe...I—"

"So you'll do it then?" Chloe grinned before checking her watch. "Oh dear, I have to get to a meeting."

"But—"

"Thanks again Remi, dear. When this crystal thing turns into a child I'll be sure to send him over to you."

"But—"

"Ta!"

Chloe rushed out of the apartment, leaving Remi in a daze. So that's why Chloe went to all that trouble to come see her. She rolled her eyes. That's just like Chloe, using people to meet her own needs. But, at least now she had a friend outside the compound that she'd see on a regular basis. Much better than say...Thorn.

Why You Should Never Play With Microwaves

Gavin was hungry, and Remi was sleeping. Never a good thing.

He sat in the middle of his room amidst a pile of coloring books. Each one had a few pathetic attempts at a colorful scribble scrawled all over it. Some within the lines, most outside in large loopy circles as if he'd just attacked the page with a crayon whirlpool. Ever since seeing Osha's room he'd wanted more colors. Colors were pretty. However, he just didn't seem to have a talent for it. He looked at a particularly wobbly scribble of red and yellow, which reminded him of the spaghetti he had with Haki last night. That consequently reminded him again that he was hungry.

Mommy had told him not to wake her up when she took her naps unless it was an emergency. Later she got more specific after that nice Stephan guy slept over, saying that missing legos and clogging the toilet did not count as emergencies. She'd narrowed the list down to Armageddon and fire. He only understood one on that list: fire, but he didn't know how to make one so he couldn't wake Mommy up.

Nevertheless, he was hungry and determined to make himself not hungry within the next five minutes. Therefore, he would just have to waltz into the kitchen and make food himself. Shouldn't be too hard.

...right?

Gavin toddled through the kitchen and into the pantry. Over the past month or so he'd gotten really good at this whole walking thing. He hardly ever stumbled over anymore, which was good because he was tired of skinned knees. His speech had been getting better too. All he needed to learn how to do now was read, because he wasn't sure how he could find the right food he wanted without being able to read the stupid labels.

Once in the pantry he looked on the highest shelf he could reach, which was the second one. Familiar looking cans sat idly, awaiting for a hungry soul to open them, but none of them looked yummy. Gavin was looking for spaghettios. Aha! Even though he couldn't read the label, he sure could recognize the logo. Marketers and advertisers everywhere rejoiced as Gavin reached up and grabbed the can with the familiar pasta O character waving on the front. But would this be enough? his growling stomach asked.

Of course not.

When Gavin started to make his way out of the pantry, another item caught his eye. It was a red and white bag that every child could recognize from all those nights watching movies. Gavin had only watched movies at Haki's place, but he could still remember what this stuff was. Popcorn! He grabbed a bag happily and sauntered into the kitchen. Hmmm...maybe one last thing and he'd be fine. His thoughts returned to the picture he'd been drawing. Spaghetti. He had to have spaghetti.

Setting down his first choices of food, he made his way to the small fridge. Well, to Remi it was small. To Gavin it was a monstrosity that hid all the good food inside. Time and time again he'd tried to open it to no avail. This time, he was determined.

He went to the edge of the door, making sure this time it was the correct side without the hinges. Placing both his hands on the door, he tugged to try and overpower the suction that kept it closed. A frustrated grunt escaped him as he tried to pull harder. Finally, in a burst of rationality, he put his legs on the cabinet right next to the fridge, using the leverage to throw the door open...

...along with throwing him across the kitchen floor.

Gavin 'oof'ed when he hit the tile. That hurt! His sore bottom made him want to cry, but that would make Mommy mad. And then all his hard work would be in vain. Wiping away the tears, his focus shifted to the fact that he'd finally opened the door. He did it! He actually did it! Had he not been trying to be quiet, he would have cheered. Instead, the food was calling him.

Toddling over to the now open store of goodies, he searched for that mysterious 'tupper ware' that Mommy always put old food in. Aha again! Past the milk, the sandwich meat, and the lettuce was a small, circular container with red mush and long stringy things that resembled spaghetti. With glee he took last night's leftovers and set them next to his popcorn and spaghettios. Being the good little boy he was, he shut the fridge door like Mommy asked him to whenever she opened it.

Well this was going to be a feast! Now it just had to be cooked, because Gavin knew that cold food was usually yucky. Only that 'pizza' stuff tasted good cold. Nope, he wanted nice warm food. He looked to the popcorn. What had Haki's daddy used again? Mikrowive? Microwave!

Looking up at his own kitchen counter, he discovered that Mommy was smart enough to have one too. The counter was a bit high, though. Not phased at all, Gavin waltzed right back into the pantry and pulled out a small stool that Mommy used to reach the high shelves. First he hoisted the food onto the counter, and then, with great difficulty, himself. Hadrian would have to teach him to fly soon, or else all this climbing would kill him. Flying looked easier anyways.

Mimicking what he'd seen the adults do, Gavin stuck the can, the popcorn, and the leftovers all in the microwave. They didn't fit very well, but at least he'd gotten them in there. He gave a curious glance at the number pad once he closed the door. How did this work again? Haki's daddy just pressed some buttons and it turned on. He figured he'd try the same.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beepitybleepbeep.

As if it were a game, Gavin punched random buttons, squealing with glee as the interior brightened and started to give off a mechanical hum. It lived! The timer on the microwave read 24:46 and counting down, but those weird symbols didn't mean much to Gavin. He was just glad that it was working. All he'd have to do now was wait for the microwave to 'ding!' and he'd have warm food to feast on.

So he waited.

And waited.

And waited some more.

5:21 and counting down.

"Gavin?" a tired voice called as the door to Mommy's room opened. Remi wiped the sleep from her eyes, still groggy from having slept for so long. "What's that noise?"

"Mikriwave!"

"Miki—wah?" Remi blinked, then realized where the source of the noise was. The kitchen. Microwave. She rushed into the kitchen immediately and stared through the transparent part of the door. Well, she would have, but the whole thing was black.

"Gavin..." Remi started before noticing the smell. Burnt popcorn. Had he tried to make popcorn? She looked at her son, still on the counter with a smug look on his face. She clicked the 'off' button on the microwave, unsure about whether or not to open it. There was a flash of light from the inside. A spark? Oh dear...

"Gavin, I want you to go wait in the living room," she said warily, lifting him off the counter and onto the floor. The machine was starting to make a strange whistling noise. Gavin looked up indignantly, thinking that his Mommy was going to steal all his food, but he went anyways. He waited again, disgruntled on the couch.

With a shaking hand, Remi approached the microwave with an outstretched arm to open it. This was going to be bad, she knew it. The smoke the microwave emitted told her so. Taking a gulp and looking away from the machine, she opened the door.

Tomato sauce went flying.

Gavin cheered in excitement as the kitchen was dressed in sauce, noodles, and black pieces of what was once popcorn. This was even better than eating! Remi, on the other hand, yelped in surprise as she was covered in sauce. The microwave gave a final whine before quitting all together. Remi had a feeling it would never work the same again. Closer inspection revealed the remains of a metal can, pieces of a bag, and a very resilient piece of tupper ware. With a heavy sigh, Remi made her way to the sink where she washed the sauce off her face. Her clothes were most likely ruined, and she'd have to clean her shoes really good. Sticking her head back out into the hallway so that she could see Gavin, she said,

"Next time you're hungry, just tell me."

Gavin nodded. Okay, so now it was Armageddon, fire, and food. Made sense, though he still didn't know what the first one was.

Remi rubbed her forehead. She needed a microwave. They were too expensive for her to go out and buy a new one. Maybe this one could be salvaged. This kind of thing required outside help, however. She made plans to get cleaned up first, then find a repairman nearby in the yellow pages. With another sigh, she walked out of the kitchen, careful not to get tomato sauce on the carpet. Today was just one of those days.

Quest For Unexplainables Finally...Done?!

Aletea
((The note is attached to a small package, which is resting against Remi's door.))

Remi,

I've fixed the stuffed animal that Gavin and Haki brought over. I wasn't sure whether or not Haki would remember to give it to him if I gave it to her, so I've gone ahead and placed it with this.

Hadrian.

It was done. Gavin had all his unexplainables. Thanks to Hadrian--who had definitely deserved the title of 'uncle' by now--he had his favorite stuffed animal back in his possession, the voice box completely fixed. For good measure, he pulled the string to listen to the nursery rhyme play in its original chipper, high-pitched voice. Fortunately his room was across the apartment from Mommy's, so she couldn't here his late night activities. Praising the rabbit for its vocal accomplishments, Gavin squeezed it in a tight hug before making his way across his room toward his bed.

Moonlight peeked through his window, brightening enough of the room for him to see that there weren't any monsters in his closet that were going to eat him tonight. Mommy had been asleep for a while, but Gavin found himself restless. It had been one of the few nights that Remi had to deny him dessert and force him into his pajamas early for acting grumpier than usual. After about ten minutes of screams worthy of a foghorn status, he'd finally relented and let himself be put to bed. He would not sleep. Bunny Frou-Frou (as Haki fondly dubbed his favorite toy) made him feel slightly more comfortable, seeing as it was one of his unexplainables. Over the past few weeks he had wandered to his box, and enjoyed the feeling of peace and completeness that came from each item. Tonight would be the night he would find out exactly why the heck he wanted all those things in the first place.

Toddling over to the bed, he bent over to pull out the special cardboard box from beneath. At first the smell from within almost knocked him over. It had been quite a while since he'd collected some of the items, meaning the dog food had become something worthy of a first place prize at a national science fair. However, fortunately Haki's money and shiny pretty thing was still in tact. The most recent addition to the box, Gawain's feathers, were also in perfect condition. And now Bunny Frou Frou was fixed and working. Everything was perfect.

Except that he still didn't know what the heck he was supposed to do with all this stuff.

The box scuffled across the carpet as Gavin dragged it to the center of his room. Plopping down with a 'thud,' he stared at the contents. They were supposed to do something special. As to what, he had no idea. He pondered for a moment. They had to do something he wanted them to do, or else he wouldn't have felt such a strong need to collect them in the first place.

So he thought. And he thought. And he thought. Flies started collecting around the can of dog food that had previously been hidden from them.

What did he want them to do? What did he want? Well, all that shiny stuff at the jewelry store had been nice, but that wasn't it. His mind wandered to the memory of watching Kids' Discover with Haki and seeing the other hawks fly. Did he want to fly? The following memory of him throwing up all over Hadrian's coffee table said no. No need to relive that experience again.

What did he want?

His toddler brain was starting to hurt, trying to think of all the things he liked. Finally something surfaced amidst the maelstrom of thoughts and attempted logic in his head. Besides his time spent with Haki, Osha, and Ina, his favorite experiences had consisted of either watching Hawk Man or shirt-ninjaing with Stephen and Matt. The hero and the ninjas. Hawk Man was his idol and he'd claimed the two college boys as his mentors-- whether they were aware of it or not. He wanted to be like them. Cool, stealthy, and heroic. People like that got all the fun and attention, and he wanted a piece of it too. Think of all the adventures he could go on if he had ninja skills! Not even Mommy could stop a ninja. Striving for superhero status was stretching it a bit, he rationalized. He had enough trouble conquering the concept of flushing the toilet, much less saving the world.

So he sat there in front of his unexplainables, fantasizing what it would be like to have special powers. Haki would call him a hero again, Mommy would tell him what a great little boy he was, and he'd be able to show off to everyone he met.

Yes, that was what he wanted.

Ability Learned!

As Gavin came to the conclusion of wishing to have special powers, to be unique, something very unique began to occur in the room. The objects had acquired a faint glow, which would have gone completely unnoticed if not for the darkness of the room. A slight sheen, perhaps even seeming to shimmer a bit - and though the toddler himself could not see it, there was also that pale glow upon himself.

Whether or not he noticed the glow on the objects was, of course, questionable. He was just a toddler, after all.

But he would surely notice what happened next.

The glows had begun to slowly grow as the winged child came to his conclusion - and it was after the conclusion that something extraordinary happened. With a loud crack sure to wake his guardian up, even across the apartment, something appeared before Gavin. Mor then just one thing, actually...

A ninja outfit. His size, perfectly - and even complete with what seemed to be sheathed daggers. All of it was the perfect size for a toddler.

And for some equally inexplicable reason, the toddler felt a wave of incredible exhaustion sweep across him.

His Ability: Creation.

((Heh...this little thing may not explain the ability too well, so let me explain. Gavin's ability is one that's very interesting: he can 'make' things he wants. If he truly wants something, he can create it - but it tends to turn out oddly. For example, he really wanted to be someone with powers - but he didn't actually get the skills of a ninja, or anything like that: he just got the outfit, the weapons.

And in turn, if he truly wanted a physical object, it would likely turn out a bit different then he wanted.

At this stage, it was an oddity for him to get something so complete - normally, it will be a very testy ability - sometimes working, sometimes not, and always working in unexpected ways. And with him this little, it will most likely only work with little things. Also, the bigger the thing he manages to create, the more exhausted he'll feel. In fact, he's likely to pass out if he 'creates' something too big.

I trust you to keep the limitations in mind.

Have fun! heart ))
