Trust me, you're not the only one with that problem. I'm going to be section leader this year, and the only thing I'm dreading is the freshmen (now sophomores) in my section. All the freshmen last year were nuts. They're not as bad as what you describe, but they do yell at the upperclassmen all the time. And they were really lazy. That's the only thing I'm not looking forward to about band. And I don't want one of them to be better than me blaugh

I'm a freshman this year but I constantly worry what will happen to the band in my old school (it was a nice sized band and all but all of the little kidies don't seem to like music these days) Then again at the school I'm at now the marching band was 12 people myself included... and that was with the help of eight graders coming over from a neighboring school too sweatdrop

eek Jeez the band at my school has over 200 people. How is it even possible to have have a 12-person marching band? Is there 1 of each instrument or something?

I'm going to be a freshman myself, but my only real fear is what the upperclassmen will do to me. I've heard some unpleasant tales from my school, especially what's done to freshmen who get second or third chair. -_-;; Not to sound cocky, but I'm pretty sure that I have the talent to be up that high...and I don't really want to be murdered, although being attacked by a bandie would be better than being attacked by a jock. Jocks are mean...bandies are usually fairly nice.

Don't worry about it. If they're mean to you, they're just jealous. This past year I was a freshman and the freshmen class simply carried the band. We had four sections led by freshmen (that's a lot) and our class had the most accomplishments and people in Honors Bands. Plus, all the freshmen were very involved, and therefore loved by our BD. I overheard a trumpet senior worrying about a freshman trumpet and trust me, he was scared. If anything, upperclassmen should worry about being beaten by incoming freshmen, so I'm keeping on my toes. My middle school BD said his sister had a problem when she got first in her high school as a freshie. It's ok, she survived. She was a clarinet...so you can imagine all the angry upperclassmen she beat. lol. We had one of the best bands last year, so sometimes freshmen help. They're new blood. razz

Oh, that's a good thing. =) My only other problem is that I wasn't in band since halfway through seventh; my BD in seventh kicked me out for unfair reasons, and my BD this year wasn't allowing anyone new. x.x I really love the flute so I'm taking it up again in high school, I'm just concerned about how far behind I'll be. Yes, I've been playing in my spare time, and at the point where I was kicked out I was way ahead of everyone else...so I might just be a little behind, I guess....

Every year, the freshmen class gets preppier and preppier. And I mean the snotty preps.
And I hate to use that label, too, but that's the only way to describe it.
We haven't had too many in band...but I still worry every year about what's going to happen when the awesome seniors leave and new people come...
I get to be guard captain this year and I've met the 2 'shmen joining- they're nice, so I'm relieved.

the freshmen are always s**t because most of them are just there to get their performing arts credit out of the way. on the plus side, they usually quit before their sophomore year.

i'm going to be concert band section leader, and let me say if any of those freshmen think they can get away with not listening to what i say, there're going to be a LOT of t-drills going on.
whee
i love punishment.

Not any "spawn of satan/chucky" kids, but one of the new Altos knows me from when she was in 7th and I was in 8th. We sat next to each other in Jazz Band that year, and as a repercussion, she picked up exactly how to annoy me.

She can be really cool sometimes, though.

I'm one of the incoming freshman this year and I have to say that my class isn't all that bad, so the upperclassman have no need to worry. ^^ Save for a few preppy girls who slap make-up on like crazy and enjoy looking pretty...but those two happen to be highly talented oboe players and we need them. xD

I have that freshman. I can honestly say that I feel your pain.

I'm going to be a freshman this year and I already have the respect of other freshmen and upperclassmen from being in marching band last year. Though this is probably because I am mature enough to know how to act. Sometimes I worry about the other freshmen. They kind of go loony sometimes. But, with how my band director is, if anyone does something that is disrespectful to the band or does something that makes the band look bad, then he'll take care of it and straighten them out. LOL

The high school that I was going to go to, only had about 24 people in all last year and half of them were guard. They didn't have any clarinets or saxophones.
The high school I am at now has about 80-90 members altogether in their marching band.
And, this other high school has about 200 people in their marching band.

Our director is WAY too leanient on students (especially freshmen) taking vacations over the summer and missing band camp. So they come in (as I said, especially freshmen) on the first day of school and don''t know any of the drill or the music... they need all of it, and they don''t ever practice at home in their spare time!
Our band sucks enough as it is... we were barely ready in time for the show last year. I don''t know what''s going to happen now. I don''t even think some of these kids are going to know their drill by the first marching festival!
