I've had people say to me, "well, god put animals on earth for us to eat."
i say, "well, he didn't say we had to eat them, and I don't want to"
christian religions just push anything away that they don't understand
instead of trying to understand it, they'd rather say it's wrong
which is why i don't believe anything churches say
if anyone tells me that being a vegetarian is wrong, i might just have to beat them with a carrot

(First of all, nice debate. People - for the most part - seem to be intellectually honest here.)

I also probably get the most flack for my veg*nism from Christians. And I get the "God made animals for us to eat" argument a LOT. Which makes me quite sad, since this is quite the ignorant statement. =( The belief that "god made animals for humans to eat" is not a tenant of the Christian faith. It's just dumb. It is not supported by Jewish or Christian scripture.

Previous posters have already pointed out that the condoning of meat eating occurred only after the flood. Although there is relatively little scripture describing events before the flood, there was a crap-load of time before the flood. Also, previous posters mentioned that factory farming did not exist during the time these writings were composed. Regardless of whether eating meat is right or wrong, Christian scripture certainly does not condone the excessive and unnecessary torture of animals before their death. Rather, Christian scripture references a god that knows when every sparrow falls. Would such a being be pleased with factory farms?

I think it is obvious that Christianity (as a belief system based on Christian scripture - including Jewish scripture) has no problem with veg*nism. One might even argue that with today's availability of nutrient-rich plant-based diets, such a belief system might prefer veg*nism of omnivorism.

But some Christians do have qualms with vegetarian diets - and I think this likely has little to do with their being Christian. I think people in general are very uncomfortable with receiving moral disapproval. We don't like someone else considering what we do to be wrong - especially when we take pride in our own morality.

So, I try to remember that a Christian's immediate defense against my vegetarianism is not about Christianity but rather about their own moral discomfort. If they would not react defensively but would instead examine their beliefs and my practice with intellectual honesty, they would probably be less offended. They might even find themselves considering their own diets.

Me, I'm Wiccan. I find that this religion, which I found about eight months ago (I've been vegetarian for almost two years), ties in nicely with vegetarianism. One of the main cornerstones of Wicca is "Harm none." Doesn't that include animals? However, I've found that not many of the other Wiccans I know are vegetarian.

im wiccan and vegetarian!

As am I(wiccan + vegetarian). And I know the whole Do an ye wish and ye harm none quote, and i think it SHOULD apply to every living thing where possible. Aren't we susposed to Ask even trees before taking off branches to make our wands? Aren't we SUSPOSED to ask a plant before we take something for any wiccan ritual?
Now obviously we can't ask for EVERYTHING (like if you work on a farm and operate the combine or something) but being a vegetarian/vegan definently causes the least harm in this world for everyone(except the meat slaughtering industries pocket but if you think about it the law of threefold...) =3

Sorry this is off topic.... I just saw some posts that'd be good to reply to. sweatdrop

Well I'm from a denomination that stresses the importance and benefits of the original diet (if you will)

And humans were permitted to eat meat after they sinned and had to leave the garden of eden...

Alot of Christains do eat meat, however it says that they shouldn't eat the unclean animals, like crustations, certain seafood (Bottom feeders) pork, etc.
