Oh, I know, you get inundated with American info that has so little bearing on our daily lives that it drives us all insane. That's the problem with having so many American channels. At the same time, our channels and radio stations are not much better with the "Canadian Content Laws" That they have to play so many minutes of every hour with Canadian content or artist. I want to tie weights to Nickleback's legs, chain them all together, and dump them off a bridge... then I want to strangle Celine Dion then burn her corpse, she is a horrible talentless screamer, and a very ugly woman, to boot. User Image Seriously, if she was hawt, then you could explain the reason for her fame away, but, nope. It's a mystery. She also has a terrible personality, an all round person to dislike.
Who else would I like to kill or make disappear....

But, it is true, we have to learn quite a bit of American history, when some Americans can't even place Canada on a map. Then we are accused of having a 'love/hate' relationship with America because we do happen to know some much about them. It's not our fault you are so loud. It's like living next door to a neighbour who likes to have noisey & kinky sex all the time. You can't blame me for knowing the intimate details of your sex life if you scream it through my bedroom wall all the time.

I believe it was PM Pierre Elliott Trudeau who said of America
"Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt."

But then he had also said of Canada "Canada is a country built against any common, geographic, historic or cultural sense." xd

HEY!! you can have celine! but Nickleback's not 1/2 bad!! stare

I dunno, the only Canadian music I really like is the indie stuff. XD heart 's for Metric + Broken Social Scene. No more pop punk though...Can't handle anymore 'Why did this happen to meeeeeeeeee?' Simple Plan-esque stuff, sorry. sweatdrop

Not sure if I can cope with the metric system...

The numbers would seem exaggerated if such a change was to occur. 80 Kph would sound like speeding to me when the equivalence is only about 50 mph. Smaller number good for cases like such. On the otherhand temperature should be exaggerated. I understand when someone says temperatures go from 100 fahren.. to 32 fahren. That is a big drop. When it comes to celsius it equivalent to 37.778 Cel.. to 0 Cel. Not such a big difference so doesn't hence the big drop in temperature. Weight is another. A rice bag wieghs 50 lbs or 22.68 kilograms. If one was to say "Oh this bag of rice is 22.68 kilograms" well that sounds light but one was to say " This bag of rice is 50 lbs" well that sounds heavy.

I think I just contradicted my thesis but I think yall know what I am talking about. I have absolutely no clue what my point was but if you got something then rock on xp

I heart Trudeau, srsly. If I had been alive when he was PM, I would have been a part of Trudeaumania. D: I also quite like his bit about how the state has no business in the bedroom, regarding to sexual preferences. whee

I'm a big fan of Trudeau myself, he said some pretty hilarious things, and he was strong, no one bullied him Nixon called him 'that a*****e' once and Trudeau said, "I have been called worse things by better people." xd
The American government calling the Canaidan government names, that's a switch from what had been happening in the last 3 years. xd

Personally I only care for the indie stuff in Canadian music. Wide Mouth Mason, Tea Party, Tragically Hip, Epos, stuff you don't hear all that often... although I must admit an attraction to the sound of Arcade Fire... that s**t is pretty awesome. 3nodding

xd People are bias towards their own system because it is what they were first taught and so it is ingrained in them. Your argument can work both ways... To some one raised on the metric system, 50mph sounds like city driving speed when it is really 80kmp highway driving speed. xd
As for 37 C dropping to 0 C... not a big drop!?!?! gonk 40 C are one of those heat waves that wipe out old folks' homes from heat stroke... 0 water freezes!

Personally, I always used lbs in my speech and thinking. Too many things are centered around it in homes, but not enough in outside daily life for my family, so there is nothing to reinforce them in using the metric system. Like, my aunt will say in passing 'the dog weight 17 lbs' but doesn't use metric... so I have no idea how much the dog weighs in Kg, because I won't bother to make the effort to figure it out.

However in driving I know both mph & kph because our city streets were paved long before any change over... so they measure up in miles... but all the street signs post speed in km. The distance then traveled transfers over in your mind quite easily. When something is an inch long... I'll say it's an inch long rather than a 'just over 2 cm'... but if it is a cm long, I'm going to say 1 cm, rather than so many 'quarters of an inch'... which is such a pain in my a** it's not worth doing. Plus I heart mm... SO EASY! 1 mm... the thickness of a piece of paper... 2mm... the thickness of 2 pieces of paper! You cannot say that isn't easy!

The benefits of the metric system are that it is standardized. No matter where you go in the world a metric measurement is the same... however, for example, a cup of water in the US is not the same measurement as a cup of water in Britain... same names, different volumes equals pain in a**.

In addition, technically the metric system is more accurate... for example if you look on a ruler; your smallest measurement is 1/16 of an inch... however, there are 2 mm in that same space.
And as my finial argument in favour of the metric system:
The greatest & most powerful military in the world uses the metric system... so it cannot be all that bad. wink

*Canadian Impostor Alert*

As a fledgling Canadian, you will have to be extra vigilant. There are a lot of impostors out there. If you suspect that someone is falsely trying to pass themselves off as a Canadian, make the following statement - and then carefully note their reaction:

"Last night, I cashed my pogey and went to buy a mickey of C.C. at the beer parlour, but my skidoo got stuck in the muskeg on my way back to the duplex. I was trying to deke out a deer, you see. Damn chinook, melted everything. And then a Mountie snuck up behind me in a ghost car
and gave me an impaired. I was S.O.L., sitting there dressed only in my Stanfields and a toque at the time. And the Mountie, he's all chippy and everything, calling me a "s**t disturber" and what not. What could I say, except, "Chimo!"

If the person you are talking to nods sympathetically, they're one of us.
If, however, they stare at you with a blank incomprehension, they are not a real Canadian. Have them reported to the authorities at once.

The passage cited above contains no fewer than 19 different
Canadianisms. In order:

pogey: EI (Employment insurance). Money provided by the
government for not working.

mickey: A small bottle of booze (13 oz) (A Texas mickey, on the other hand, is a ridiculously big bottle of booze, which, despite the name, is still a Canadianism through and through.)

C.C.: Canadian Club, a brand of rye. Not to be confused with "hockey stick," another kind of Canadian Club.

beer parlour: Like an ice cream parlour, but for Canadians.

skidoo: Self-propelled decapitation unit for teenagers.

muskeg: Boggy swampland.

duplex: A single building divided in half with two sets of inhabitants, each trying to pretend the other doesn't exist while at the same time managing to drive each other crazy; metaphor for Canada's french and english.

deke: Used as a verb, it means "to fool an opponent through skillful misdirection." As a noun, it is used most often in exclamatory constructions, such as: "Whadda deke!" Meaning, "My, what an impressive display of physical dexterity employing misdirection and guile."

chinook: An unseasonably warm wind that comes over the Rockies and onto the plains, melting snow banks in Calgary but just missing Edmonton, much to the pleasure of Calgarians.

Mountie: Canadian icon, strong of jaw, red of coat, pure of heart. Always get their man! (See also Pepper spray, uses of.)

snuck: To have sneaked; to move, past tense, in a sneaky manner; non-restrictive extended semi-gerundial form of "did sneak." (We think.)

ghost car: An unmarked police car, easily identifiable by its inconspicuousness.

impaired: A charge of drunk driving. Used both as a noun and as an adjective (the alternative adjectival from of "impaired" being "pissed to the gills").

S.O.L.: s**t outta luck; in an unfortunate predicament.

Stanfields: Men's underwear, especially Grandpa-style, white cotton ones with a big elastic waistband and a large superfluous flap in the front. And back!

toque: Canada's official National Head Apparel, with about the same suave sex appeal as a pair of Stanfields.

chippy: Behaviour that is inappropriately aggressive; constantly looking for a reason to find offense; from "chip on one's shoulder." (See Western Canada)

s**t disturber: (See Quebec) a troublemaker or provocateur. According to Katherine Barber, editor in Chief of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary, "s**t disturber" is a distinctly Canadian term. (Just remember that Western Canada is chippy and Quebec is a s**t disturber, and you will do fine.)

Chimo!: The last sound heard before a Canadian falls over. Passes out!

EH!

I do the same thing... when I measure something large as an approximate, I'll say "I'm about 5 foot, 5 foot 1" but if I am measuring something under a foot/30 cm, I doit in metric, because it is more accurate and easier to understand.
I find especially if I am just being approximate or vague I'll use imperial, since it is easier for my ancestors at home to understand.

The terms out of that that I actually knew xd :
mickey, skidoo, duplex, chinook, mountie, snuck, ghost car(it's funny when ghosts are so obvious XD hehe), impaired, toque, s**t disturber...yeah that's it.

lolz i was watching the Comedy channel the other day, and one of the Comedians was from America, but was driving to Canada for a show! So he's on the American border going about 50mph, and "i didn't realise that 2 Kilometers iare about the equivalent of 1 Mile" and he goes over the boarder and reads the sign "100 KMPH" .... eek eek eek *revs engine* and then he hits a school zone "SLOW TO 80" ... well it's the LEAST i can do!

lmao it was SOOO funny!! xd
