I often find myself reading more than one book at a time. In fact, I'm reading two different books right now.
Usually, I end up being in the middle of multiple books at the same time since I tend to get bored with certain books while I'm reading them and have to put them down. Either that, or I find another book that I suddenly 'have' to read (as if 'impulse-reading', or something) and end up putting down the book I'm already reading and start that one.
I never really mix the storylines up, though. (The only time I do anything of the sort is after reading a lot of fanfiction; I can never remember if what I'm remembering about a book or anime is from the book itself or the fanfic. sweatdrop )
I try very hard to not read the next book in a series until I've finished the one before it, though. That can get very hard when the one that I'm up to seems to be boring, while the one after it sounds quite interesting...Such as the series by Diane Duane...)

I usually read 2 books at a time. I think it's fun to do. 3nodding

One of my English professors reads a few books at once intentionally. She says it helps her make more connections. 3nodding
I usually read more than one book at a time because it keeps life a bit more interesting. I can read several different things in one day, instead of just one story, and I prefer that. But then, maybe it really has to do with attention span ...

I have books I'm reading at home, and a different pile of books at works (both for fun and for business). That way I don't have to carry them between the two locations all the time. Sometimes where I'm reading a book will help me remember the plot as much as the cover of the book.

I try not to do that, because I like to take the time to enjoy the book I am reading. Sometimes I will read two at once, or I'll interupt one to read a few manga novels (since they only take me a couple of hours). I usually do manage to stay at just one, and I do prefer it when I do.

Thank god I'm good at multi-tasking and concentrating on multiple things going on at the same time! I read a lot of different books while reading a lot of other books all the time. Right now I've got a smallish stack of eight books piled up next to my bed; I'm halfway done with all of them.
Usually, the books I read are pretty tough too, with a lot of intertwining and constricting plots and subplots. Reading several books like that at a time really requires an enormous amount of concentration.

There is a book called the unvisibiles that has had a book mark in it for about 3 years. I can not be bothered to finish it for some reason. I have read so many books in that time and its crazy.

When I'm at school I'll read two or three books at a time. Mostly due to the fact that they keep getting confiscated. xD

I'll start two or three at a time until one grabs me. Then it's that one book, all the time. After I finish that one, I'll add another book to the mix and find one that I have to finish.

I don't have a problem with keeping plots and characters straight, but I don't like reading multiple book at once simply because it then takes even longer to finish the book. If I read multiple books, it's usually for reasons like the first book is too big for me to carry around comfortably at school, so I take a smaller one to read while there. That kind of thing.

As long as the genre or story is different enough, I can read about 3 or 4 books at a time.

I usually only read one at a time, but for some reason recently I haven't been keeping to that. Mostly 'cause of the amount of people lending me books spontaneously I think.
I feel like I'm reading a book, inside a book, inside a book. Take now for instance. Half-way through Russel Brands autobiography, I got the urge to reread Ship of Magic. A small way into that, a friend loaned me some books, so that added Mystic River to the pile. Then another friend lent me Shadowplay. And then I went out and bought The Book Thief, and had to start it. That's... five books at the moment. Luckily I move about between houses a lot (long story), so I can leave a couple in one house and the rest in another. Easy. So I'm having no problem really.
Actually, I've just realized. I've been reading a lot less recently, due to the extra workload in school this year, so that could explain it.
