Lyra cringed at the gore that rained down all over the place. A grim fate for the earth, to be bathed in the blood of foul creatures that should never have seen the light of day.
Kamiss seemed to be holding his own, easily, so she glanced at her surroundings, taking in the environment with a clarity and ease she'd never had before. She could see smoke, rising dark gray against light gray, far in the distance. But that was all. Except for carnage and ruin, the world seemed lost.

Blood splattered against his chest and arms as Kamiss whirled, a tornado of hate, sadness and confusion. Leaping into the air, Kamiss stabbed both his swords into a creatures' shoulder blades, and swung around, throwing it into the group behind him. He followed it, cutting through the group as they were falling to the ground. As he turned, more and more beasts swirled around him. With a bloodthirsty cry, he flung himself at them. "This isn't working!" He shouted. "Run!" He ducked under a sword and promptly sliced the attacker in half. "I will follow!"

Reluctant to leave the one person she now knew, Lyra hestitated. But in a moment she was up and running, leaping over rocks and dodging crumbling walls with the agility of a gazelle. At one point her pack threw her a little off balance and she stumbled, but recovered quickly. She felt like a coward for leaving Kamiss, though she thought it obvious he could take care of himself.

He couldn't. Kamiss roared as his shoulder blade was sliced with a scythe. A blade cut into his left leg and a dagger was thrown into his right shin. His demonic adversaries crowded around him. Kamiss threw one sword up. Stupidly, all the orcs' eyes followed. He threw his second sword forward, cutting through many of the green beasts. They returned to his hands, and quickly melded into one huge blade again. Ignoring the pain in his legs, He spun in a circle, forcing the orcs back. He noticed then the cuts were hurting less and less. Inspecting his wounds, he saw black tentacles inside his sliced muscles. They were intertwining with the tentacles opposite them, pulling the skin back together and patching it. Staring at it in horro at what was under his skin, Kamiss barely dodged the attack of an orc. Pulling the dagger free of his shin, finally, he stabbed the offender. He glanced at his shin and it started healing too. Now slightly grinning, Kamiss leapt onto a smashed building, landing on a metal girder 37 feet up. He smiled at the orcs, than jumped higher to a less damaged building. He started hopping across the tallest roofs, keen eyes searching for Lyra.

She had stopped in the lee of what once must have been a church, but was now little more than a scorched shell. She stepped slowly between shards of colored glass, and scrunched down between too almost-dead bushes against the wall. Lyra heaved off her pack, inspecting it for something. She didn't know what, but she was certain she would know when she found it.

Kamiss noticed Lyra. He leaped off the building he was on, flailing his arms. He grabbed an upright pole, swinging to the right and twisting his body to the side. A drop of blood trickling from his forehead passed in front of his eyes, and to him it seemed to move very slowly. He landed on his feet, dust rising around him. Slowly his head wound closed. "I didn't see any followers from my view. We had better keep moving though." Kamiss would not let his uncertainty show through his face.

Lyra nodded, slowly...trying to figure out what she had heard underneath Kamiss' words. Something...worry? She didn't know, but she'd found what she'd been looking for, so she closed the pack and swung it back onto her back, getting up quickly. She passed the water bottle to Kamiss, insisting he drink before they moved on.

"I'll drink some when you're done, then we can go."

Kamiss took about a 1/4 cup from the bottle, swishing it around in his mouth for a second and letting it trickle slowly into his throat. This was a way of rationing water and making your body feel like you had gotten more than you had. He had learned it... He shook his head and passed it to Lyra. "Hurry. I think I hear something." He went to the spot, but found nothing. 'This world is freaking me out.' Once again, he didn't let it show. If you show worry, those around you get worried. His... squad and him talked but didn't show emotion. 'That's right, squad'. He had been in the army before... this.

Lyra gulped down a swallow of the warm water, making a face. She wasn't used to this, living "on the edge" as it were. She slipped the bottle into a side pocket on her pack, and walked over to kamiss. She stared up into his face, still trying to discern what he was thinking. It was hard to do, he showed hardly any emotion. She nodded when he looked down to signal she was ready to move.

If I was in the military, what about my memories from before the attack? That couldn't have happened... I couldn't get jumped by four guys! I was when I was a kid... could that be it? What's happening to my head? Kamiss continued walking silently, occasionally slightly slipping his swords out of their cases about two inches, then sliding them back. I had this place memorized, even though it all looked the same. How come I can't get my bearings? He thought, accompanied by a frustrated sigh out loud.

Lyra was lost in her own mind, as well. But she couldn't rationalize any of the thoughts. She remembered a family...a small one...and training. But she coudln't remember who, or for what. She jumped when Kamiss sighed, then laughed out loud, sc aring herself more. She suddenly remembered they weren't alone, and slapped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide and searching for movement around them. She saw nothing, and calmed.

A creature leapt form the shadows. Kamiss jumped over it in a sideways roll, evading and bringing one of his sword down on it in one motion. It made no sound as it died. Kamiss looked at Lyra, then spun in a circle, checking to make sure no more were around. He nodded to himself, and then heard a sound like rustling leaves behind him. "Damn." he swore, spinning around. Suddenly a huge black hound and a black humanoid figure were charging. This somehow sparked a memory in Kamiss. "DEMONS!" He cried. And with that, the hellhound crashed into him, teeth closing around his throat.

Before she realized anything was happening, Lyra had thrust her spear through the skull of the hellhound, but it seemed to have no effect. Then the stone on the spear started to glow, and the demon dog whimpered, realeased Kamiss, and seemed to phase through the spear, backing up slowly to stand near the humnoid. Lyra helped Kamiss up, and they stood facing the demons.

"I have a plan." Kamiss whispered. "Step one, take out demon dog." Kamiss immediatly leapt into the air, and watched as both demon and hound looked up at him. "Attack!" He yelled. The demon raised a hand and shot a purple burst of energy at Kamiss, and so did the hellhound. Kamiss sliced through them both, and was ingulfed by an explosion of black and purple smoke.

Lyra swirled her staff like a fan, attempting to blow away the smoke. She held an arm over her mouth, blcoking out the foul smell that accompanied it. She tried not to panic as Kamiss didn't resurface immediately.
