"Sixty, ye say?" repeats Caroline for her own clarification. "I believe sixty'll do just fine." She nods decisively. "Now, what do Banya birds do, exactly, besides act as bonnie wee friends?" she asks, digging in her purse for the couplets needed.
As she handed over the bird and took the money for her own, Merce explained.

"Well, besides having good long lives and being sweet companions- every once and a while, a Banya will spout forth a fortune- or a prediction... or even help you find missing things or tell you when danger is afoot. Each breed of bird is different, as it's evolved in its area of the world to help it survive. The most concentrated fortune tellers are those that have been specifically bred by the gypsies to do so. Like most of the common banyas of today- these are all domesticated.

Veshengo watched the women and Voltaire as they spoke with the trader about her flock of banyas. He seemed quite uninterested until, that is, his eye caught a bird that looked as though it was aflame. Trying to remain inconspicuous, Veshengo walked over to the banya and reached his hand out to it. "You look like a phoenix...quite stunning, really..."

"Oh, that one's a beauty," Merce said, letting the man take the bird out of its cage. "Practically on fire, isn't he?"

Marissa approached the trade stop with a smile on her face. While she had Kale's hand wrapped in her own, she had also gotten wind of the trader, and so brought along someone special... Aryel, the creamy peach Banya, sat on Marissa's shoulders, singing something fierce. It was a happy carol, for the bird spied some of its own and rejoiced.

Kale looked around, observing the beautiful birds and some of their happy new owners. He grinned, some of his baby teeth sticking through his gums. He jumped when he heard Aryel twittering loudly, and realized they had reached the trader's stand. He was staring straight into the face of a gleaming golden Banya. His mouth opened slightly in surprise.

"Well, isn't Arrie excited to see you?" Marissa chukled, speaking to the gold bird.

"What a beautiful little Banya. A Golden Head, isn't it," Merce said- more of a statement than a question. Then she saw the gypsy look at the gold bird.

"Ah, this is a Fortune Bird. Helps you find gold." Then she told her how much it cost.

"Och, well-then," says Caroline, surveying the magnificent bird in its shiny brass cage. It chirps merrily. "Now, er...is it a wee lad or lassie?" she asks a bit less smoothly. It'd make quite a difference in the name she gave it.

"Practically...indeed..." Veshengo opened the door of the cage and took the bird out. Holding the bird so it's head was at the leval of his eyes, he glanced back at Merce, "I've heard that birds make fine companions...what of this one?"

Marissa stroked Aryel beneath her crest feathers. The bird puffed out in contentment.

"Golden Head, you say? What's that? She's always been Arrie, to me."

Kale tugs his mother's skirt. He point at the golden bird, grinning. His mother sees him and cocks a smile. "Money, you say? Well, that explains it, Kale always has had expensinve taste." She ruffles her boy's hair. "100 is might steep...but he's a mighty fine bird," she mused to herself. She tapped her foot as she thought. "90? Or is that too low?"

Annjette idly tugged on Voltaire's shirt collar and whispered something in her guardian's ear. Voltaire blinked at Annjette and then shrugged, "If that suits you best, duckling we can go on and wait until another time."

Annjette firmly nodded. Without any word Voltaire nodded to those he knew and bowed his head respectfully to the trader-woman whether she saw it or not and he left.

((Just wanted to make an offical sort of exit.))

"Tis a lad."

"Oh, he has a bit of a sour temperament. Tends to save all his darker fortunes for when you've done something to displease him. But he's a sweetheart, nonetheless. Run of the mill as far as Banyas go.. but definitely worth the seed."

"Tis just the way we breeders separate them by color patterns, dearie," the woman assured. On her shoulder, St Phier whistled and blinked at the fetching bird while Merce went on with her business dealings.

"I'll go as low as 95 for that one, I'm afraid- but no lower. Fortunes tend to make up what they lose you, yeh see."

Merce nodded her head to the man, and watched him lead away his duckling-like daughter. As they traipsed off, one of the birds in the cage let out a soft whistling phrase.

"Dark child. Dark bird. Like a weed- so does the bird grow..."

"Thank ye kindly, Mum. I'll be treatin' 'im well." She bobs a curtsy and wanders away back to Mountain Air, bearing the brass cage and the beautiful bird.

"It never hurts to know when something bad is about to befall me, I suppose...Though I don't really plan on doing something to upset anyone, much less a bird..." Veshengo reached his free hand into his pocket and jingled around what few couplets he had left from selling off his wagon. He glanced at the bird and then back to Merce, "And how much would it take for you to part with such a bird?"

Marissa laughed. "Oh, don't mind my haggling, I'm just cheap." To the next comment, she replied, "Do they now? Well then, that seems a fair trade- bitty coins for such a pretty fellow." As she rummaged through her coin purse, sifting out 95, she glanced at Merce. "Or is he a fellow?" She had only assumed such. She dumped the coins on the table for Merce.

Kale looked about, seeming unsatisfied, and spied a yellow daffoldil peeking out from beneath the trader's table. He yanked it from the ground and, standing on his tiptoes, pushed the flower at Merce.

"And a blossom for the missus, it seems!"

"No less than 60, dearie. Already quite on the low end as far as birds go."
