No matter how many times they did this, Sylfie dreaded it. After her flamethrower had jammed during one of her very first Falls, leading to the ugly scoring that covered much of her right side, she just never trusted the things. No matter how many times they did work, there was no getting past the suspicion the incident had instilled in her. But still, here they were. Again.

Though her thoughts were grim, she was no less prepared, and when Hesperith dove for a little clump of Thread, Sylfie flamed it to ash.

Caracath let out a hiss as a piece of Thread hit her. The pain seared but the Gold pushed through the pain. It wasn't as horrible as she had gotten before.

On the lookout for any stray Thread (or bags of firestone) that might slip through, Sylfie caught a glimpse of a wingmate in danger, and Hesperith called out to warn them.

Watching as the other wings flew above them, diving and attacking Thread, Aquilina could feel Caracath's desire to take out more of the enemy. They were made for here though, they were too large to help up there, they were needed down here.

They spotted another tangle of Thread falling through, and Hesperith swooped for it. Sylfie readied her flamethrower, but - because of course it would - it jammed, and the tangle fell past them and down towards the ground below. Oh no! Oh...oh how she hoped there was no one and nothing down there that would be hurt, and that the ground crews would find it safely...

H'sau hadn't met the rider or the dragon that had been lost, that he could recall. It was likely they shared no friends in common. They may never have eaten at the same table or stood in the same place on the beach. It didn't matter. They were gone, snuffed out doing their duty. If there was any incentive to keep flying on, even sore and tiring, this was it.

So they flew in circles, H'sau with his head tipped back so far his neck was starting to hurt, and they waited for their next chance to prove themselves.

Fighting Thread while fighting pain while acknowledging the loss of a fellow rider was a lot to manage all at once. They would manage, though, because they'd been challenged and doubted and had their dedication devoted so often that giving in or giving up were simply not options.

Until they couldn't, Niobet and Aedeth would hold a place in the sky. If they wavered or veered out of position for a moment, it was just that: a moment. A moment in which everyone was busy. No one notice one momentary lapse of focus.

Finally!

United in their impatient relief, H'sau and Mereketh watched the stray bit of Thread drift lower, having been missed by those above, and when it was at just the right height, they dispatched it in a literal blaze of glory.

It wasn't enough.

Before Aedeth had taken them back to the Reaches, they'd been busily fighting Thread, making headway, helping out other riders in need.

Now that they were back, now they'd been knocked down and had to argue to be allowed to come back up where they belonged, things had been calmer. Both dragon and rider had been less involved, and neither one of them liked it. An observer would be hard pressed to tell which one of them looked the most like she might soon come out of her skin.

Perhaps one would provoke the other.

Either way, something needed to happen and happen soon.

Mictecath surged towards a clump, and Nyara steadied the flamethrower, releasing a long burst of fire and reducing it to ash. As it fluttered down, triumph swept the pair once more. Ha! Now we are fighters!

And catchers... Mictecath tried to keep her worry at bay, but as loss wracked the Weyr she keened deeply and mournfully. Nyara's heart rose in her throat and she looked up, as if she could see each individual fighter and figure out who...

Thella... Nya plucked the name from her mind, stealing her heart against the pain that followed. Wherry-s**t. Are you okay?

We must keep fighting. Mictecath stated, a cold fire lining her voice. It was anger Nya had very rarely felt- not the grudging anger of Mictecath's fury towards those who slighted her or her family, but the icy, undying rage of a dragon who knew her duty and its cost.
