General Benitoite

For a while now the plants in the city had been acting strangely - too strange. Plants he knew would lean towards a light source, there were studies on it.. But the way they bent...that wasn't normal. The flowers didn't need to bend like they were now, and in some cases so dramatically. The light source, the sun, had not shifted in such a way that would cause them to all need to lean as they were.

He'd been out plenty of times to observe the plants not only in his yard, and green house, but the ones around the city. They were all the same.

It wasn't normal and it worried him immensely. He didn't trust things in this city, and for good reason, he'd gotten used to things in the city being a mess - a trap. Nothing was ever normal.. Even in the Negaverse for as long as he'd been he'd found himself falling into Negaverse traps more than once.

Keeping the potential danger in mind he'd been going out and powering up in order to inspect the plants in the city, he was playing it as safe as he could. What he wasn't expecting was to be looking over some plants one moment and winding up inside a field of flowers, with a lot of people around him, the next moment.

The oddest part...no one was fighting and he didn't feel like going at anyone either. How strange. This couldn't be good - right?

"Ahh, I didn't either. I went looking for you and found my self here." And perhaps everyone else gathered had just found themselves here. Someone was throwing some sort of a party but he wasn't sure it was a good thing, if everything he'd heard from Acubens was true. Such things were never good.

"So Mirrorspace isn't involved. Something else is." Because something was, without a doubt, involved in this. How else to explain so many people gathered peacefully?

"I don't plan on leaving your side, so don't worry." If only, in part, because he was new to these sorts of things. As much as he'd like to go off on his own he couldn't. He had to be here for Acubens and for his own health, he didn't know much about magic and these sorts of incidents. He needed to learn more so he could start going off on his own. This was a chance to learn, he was sure of it.

Eternal Sailor Remarque, Dark Mirror Senshi of Puppetry

Remarque watched the man carefully, nodding as he processed his words. "...Yeah, Destiny City has a way of doing that to you." He held out his hand. "I haven't seen you before. I'm Remarque, Dark Mirror Senshi of Puppetry." It was a badge of honor, a proud title. "...Whatever's going on around here, be careful. Not usually a good thing when people start gathering somewhere and no one knows what's going on."

He raised his eyes again, skimming the crowd even as he offered his hand to the young man.

He didn't like this, not really, but he'd have been lying if he said he didn't like the rush of excitement coursing through his veins.

Eternal DMS Kiuchi

It was his job, at least in part, to watch what was going on in the city and make sure others in his court were safe. So when things had started to become too weird, too hard to explain away, he'd started going out in order to examine things and try and figure it out. Not that he figured random magic could be figured out. He really just wanted to gain a mental list of what was going on, so he could warn others like Gabriel.

Tonight he was out, again, this time he was looking over the flowers. They weren't normal, one in a long list of abnormal things going on in the city, but he wasn't expecting to he transported, at least it seemed as though he'd been transported, to an area outside of the city. An area filled with flowers and people.

Fluffing his wings he took the time to look around, while grasping at his own uniform. What was going on? Why was no one fighting? By now they all should be...right? That's how it went normally....so this wasn't normal...but how so? What was going on and why?

The crowd of people had grown larger, and while no one seems to know what is going on--something begins to shift. At first, it feels like a strange earthquake--only, nothing about it seems particularly alarming. The plants across the field begin to shift, twisting slowly to reveal a strange, bulbous lump deep in the ground. The earth is scorched below it, and it seems like something large must have collided with the earth--recently.

The sweet smell fills the air again, along with the gentle, soothing calm that seemed to come with it the first time. It almost doesn’t even seem strange that the leafy bulb is slowly opening, or that vines are twisting, coiling around it from the ground.

After a few long seconds of gradual shifting, the giant leaves peel back to reveal what seems to be a giant flower. Innocent, at first, until begins to peel open, revealing a strange, mouthlike set of leaves with long, spiky thorns. The moment it opens its oversized mouth, little glowing fireflies emerge. They seem to be all colors of the rainbow and dance around harmlessly. There’s something playful, fun about these lights--and the moment one comes in contact with you, you find yourself face to face with the vision of someone once lost to you. They take your hand, gentle and reassuring, and begin leading you towards the open maw of the now awakening, beastlike plant.

You are face to face with the same loved one you may have encountered in our previous prompt! If you did not reply to this prompt, you may either handwave or backdate it having occurred! If you would prefer your character not previously encounter a lost or estranged loved one prior to this, this can be the first time they interact with someone! However, if they already saw one person, they must see that same person now; you cannot swap out for another lost loved one! These individuals will not speak with you and can only interact with the one person who sees them. Your mind is a strange haze, but you are filled with the sensation of peace, like this is okay. You find yourself wanting to follow them, only...the closer you get, the more you feel like something might not be right…

Roll to break free from the trance!

  • If you have a fourth stage character, RNG between numbers 5-10!
  • If you have a third stage character, RNG between numbers 4-10!
  • If you have a second stage character, a Mauvian Senshi, or a full Youma character, RNG between numbers 3-10!
  • If you have a first stage character, or a humanoid Mauvian, RNG between numbers 2-10!
  • If you have a civilian or a basic Mauvian, RNG between numbers 1-10!

Quote:
If you roll between 8-10 you break free from the trance and the illusions disappear! You regain full function and come to your senses! You cannot attack anyone, but you can try to help break others out of their trance!
If you roll between a 4-7 you find yourself able to resist the trance, but the illusions continue to appear next to you, trying to lure you closer to the plant. You find yourself tempted and questioning what is real, but you are able to break free if you try hard enough.
If you roll between a 1-3 you are struggling to break free from the trance! Though you have brief moments of clarity, you may find that your mind keeps sinking into the illusion and you are having a difficult time keeping yourself from following the illusion that seems to be guiding you closer to the plant. You get close enough that you can smell an almost putrid stench from the saliva-like sap dripping from its open mouth.

Please keep track of your roll totals in bold red font at the top of your post!

If you choose to, you may respond from the prompt you roll to or any prompt lower, but you cannot respond to a prompt higher than what you rolled! You can only roll once per prompt and if you make a mistake, simply strike out your post. Please do not delete rolls! You may continue to RP between prompts. As others with power arrived, Castor began to bristle. Nothing spoke of good things when you gathered various volatile powers at large together. Not to mention, some were a bit more brazen than others.

He kept looking at the few he could recognize. Charliko, Adorea, And Wolframite. God damn it. He groaned. Well. He knew where his night was going-

He just really hoped this pollen wasn't some kind of sex pollen. He wasn't allowed in an orgy- not after what happened last time.

There was little point to hide himself now- and with civilians present, he might as well show himself. Hiding would just make him suspect. So, tugging the cloth over his lower face, he moved out of his hiding place, walking towards the center of the field, acting confident.

DMS Senshi Itokawa.
Score: 7

"I'm...not new...but I am. Itokawa - fairy rings." Taking the offered hand to shake. His head nodded at the others words. "Too late to leave...but doesn't feel dangerous here." It felt safe, the opposite of what the other was warning about. Though he'd take heed of the others words and trust them, he'd clearly been around longer than himself.

"I'll stay here then? I do not know anyone else." Though he really didn't know the one he was standing next to either. It was at least better than nothing.

Watching as something seemed to be happening he got ready, as if something bad may happen, but nothing. Nothing bad happened. What he wasn't expecting, what didn't seem possible, was happening instead. At least for a moment .The plant didn't look so innocent anymore, far from it in fact, that almost looked like a mouth. That was no normal plant. Before he could say anything, or perhaps find a way to get out of here, one of those little colorful fireflies landed on his shoulder. Instead of running, not even able to turn around to do so, he saw someone...someone he hadn't seen in a long time now.

Whispering their name as he took their hand, taking a step towards them. This wasn't possible...but it was? He hadn't seen them since before he'd moved to Destiny City.

No...no...there was no way. They hated him! They'd made his last few weeks in Tailand miserable and so heartbreaking. They weren't here - they never would be. They'd never offer their hand to him. Shouting something in Tai he yanked his hand free and stepped back, ignoring when they turned up at his side. "Not him - never him." He didn't like this - these illusions. Wasn't that what his magic did and yet illusions were being used against him? That he didn't like.

"Oh, there!" Adorea was unceremonious in her observations and rose her hand to point towards Castor. He'd been one of the few senshi who had epic enough timing to get her out of trouble, he'd even gone one step further to try and help her learn from her mistakes and be a touch more useful. To say she was relieved to have another familiar face was an understatement, but she couldn't keep the unbridled curiosity at bay as more powered individuals began to make themselves known.

...Even those hidden off to the side to keep low profiles, those that she knew would probably end her time on this earth early if she got too close at this point in her life.

It was safe to say that if the young Senshi wasn't careful she would be thoroughly distracted by everything new and forget the entire reason she was here. This was further exasherbated by the arrival of Ananke and the method in which she greeted Arthur. The red head knew that Mauvians weren't ordinary cats but she had assumed that they may not necessarily like that in much the same fashion. It was clear that she didn't know as much about Arthur and other Mauvians as she might have liked, but she did afford a smile, whoever this senshi was...she knew the Mauvian well.

"You think so?" she asked after a moment and pursed her lips. Maybe if she had more powerful abilities she would attempt to go solo, but in the grand scheme of things that just wasn't smart. "That's never really worked out for me before," she admitted and shook her head. She'd revisit that statement in the distant future, but for now she had the capacity to admit that she just wasn't good at this.

Her gloved hand lifted to rub at the back of her neck and she turned her gaze this way and that as she took in more and more of the gathering crowds. Credit where it was due, whatever was causing it certainly knew how to cause a stir. Somehow she doubted that even if Arthur could summon a megaphone for her, she might find herself up against a much more difficult opponent than previous anticipated.

Other than the continuing confusion that seemed to riddle each arrivals features, there wasn't much to be said for them. They all seemed healthy and there wasn't any great panic, but that still didn't mean she didn't squint in concern. Was it her or were the plants moving? She'd seen a lot of weird stuff this week and at this point in time she wasn't prepared to completely dismiss it.

It was then that her eyes caught sight of Abeosamu and she raised a brow; she looked powered but she was so much smaller than anyone else.

"Do we really wake up that young?" she asked, glancing at Arthur out of curiosity and back to Abeosamu again.

It was unlikely that she would receive anything more than a brief reply though, a mere semblance of confirmation if anything; for the plants began to bristle and move; and this time she was certain she wasn't imagining it. Twisting and coiling, it began to reveal something in the ground admist the charred soil.

Was this the 'alien' Arthur had referred to in his musings?

Her lips parted in astonishment as it rose up further and began to transform into something considerably less peaceful than before. It was then that the fireflies came; those fireflies from before that both she and Connie had seen. So this was where they had come from, all those bizarre occurrences might well have been -

Whatever train of thought she might have had was interrupted momentarily; the fireflies that had been familiar at first had begun to act in a manner that was decidedly less passive than her previous encounters. They danced, they twirled, and then rather than running, they went straight for her. The results were not pleasant; the figure she had encountered previously was back, the same haunting and shattered features staring back at her... And yet this time she didn't feel the anxiety from before.

She knew him.

Didn't she?

Hand outstretched, she found herself taking it willingly, unaware of the true purpose of this shadowed form. Yet something plagued her, niggled in t he depths of her mind that something was wrong. Her previous encounter with this 'shattered' form of a man had been much different, the flickers from before, the inescapable sense of being chased and pursued by what she couldn't see and touch...and then he had appeared before her again that night. He'd said something, she'd only heard one word of an otherwise broken sentence but it had been ominous.

Run.

Her legs ceased to move and she pulled her hand away abruptly from the illusionary form of the man. Several steps back and she found herself gazing at the large maw she had been walking towards. It remained out of reach but her eyes did widen at the reality of the situation and what might have become of her.

When she turned to look at the 'man' who had almost led her to her demise he was gone, whatever the fireflies had done to her had lost their affects.

But if that had happened to her then what had happened to everyone else? It should have come at no surprise that she spun herself round to check for anyone else who may have been struck by the same pretty bugs she'd been so fixated on a couple of nights before. She'd be damned if she was about to let anyone get devoured by a giant plant, she'd find some weedkiller if she had to...Did they sell weedkiller in those quantities or would she end up on some sort of list?

Broke Free

"I'm not Mary Poppins. My space is only so big and I don't own a megaphone. I just have a thermos, snacks, and some first aid in there. A notebook too. Not useful for right now." He pointed out, thinking she was referring to his space pocket.

"Ananke! You are here too. I suppose this is pulling from everywhere." He said as he half turned to look at her, unable to do a full rotation with his tail held. "Ah well. No hands. I sometimes am able to convince the employee that does errands at my place to run a comb but he isn't very good at it. I really do need to employ a senshi or knight instead." He added but that wasn't pressing at the moment.

At the mention of someone young, Arthur looked out to see a chibi senshi in the group and frowned. "The practices of the past. Senshi are soldiers and many wanted to awaken them as soon as possible in hopes of making stronger soldiers who could control their abilities. Trust me. I understand the feeling of seeing a child in uniform. It doesn't settle right for me either." He admitted to her, feeling guilty in response to the Mauvians tasks with awakening chibi senshi.

The ground rumbled and Arthur steadied himself to regain his balance. Everywhere people were moving, aggitated or nervous from what was happening - and something was happening.

Everything had the heavy haze of perfume and summer heat. Like being under a lilac blanket. It made him feel sleepy and he stumbled a moment before a soft, wrinkled hand grabbed his. It was tender, callous from worth but the skin was thin from age showing off the tender blue veins. He held it and as he looked up, the very core of his heart broke.

"Eleanor?" He whispered as if saying it higher would dissolve her like tissue paper.

"Oh Arthur. My sweet boy." She said and it pulled him back to a multitude of little moments where she used to say the same to him. On the way to the mailbox to bring in the newspapers to sell. On the counter as she saw something distasteful on TV and would idly stroke him. Beside her as she slowly out on one sick and bemoaned her bad back. On their way up the stairs to make supper.

At night, beside her, on the quilt before the glow of the little tv.

Never once had he had the chance to have her listen to him. A cat before he knew better and then too new to why he was that he didn't want to scare her because he was afraid of what he was too.

"Oh Eleanor." He rose, shaking, and slowly wrapped his arms about him in all the ways he had wished he could have years ago. When he had wanted to help her but was too small. When he wanted to hold her up but was too weak. When he wanted to talk to her in so many ways but could only meow. He had wanted to be the one she could rely on when she became hurt, when she felt broken, when she felt sick, and in the end when she was afraid. Afraid of the end before she finally settled with it.

He wanted to tell her how much she had meant to him and thank her.

But she had gone. How often and how long had he spent at her grave unsure of what else to do a d wondering if there was a point.

She was gone.

Arthur looked up to the tender expression of the hardened woman he had loved to see her leading him to the plants and gritted his teeth against the pain of not wanting to give to reality and pulled away. And he was gone again. Nothing but fireflies and sweet perfume.

Great tears welled in his eyes and fell as she dissolved from him. "Thank you " He uttered hopelessly, knowing it wasn't her and knowing she still would never know.

He didn't have time to collect himself and so he tried to dry his eyes with little success as he looked around and moved to Adorea.

"This is horrid. We need to wake up the others. Keep them from getting eaten and figure out what to do about these plants."

Lt. Wolframite (half youma)

There he was. The egotistical, puffed-up Royal pain in his a**. Despite being lower in power, lower in rank, it was grating at him not to do something about him being here. It was clear this wasn't a Negaverse operation or the rest of them wouldn't look as lost as he was which meant whatever was going on was something else entirely. Sometimes having another enemy could be a good thing IF he could use it to his advantage. If something was powerful enough to bring them all here, it could be powerful enough to take out a Royal. Maybe one good kick in the right direction could end the whole thing - oh but then where would the fun in that be. The credit would go to something else even if he had some hand in it. Not as glamorous as the million other ways he wanted to strangle and tear apart the man.

Just as he was musing what to do, he felt a firm hand on his shoulder and he was about to either punch someone or report to an officer when he turned and his entire body went cold.

"...h-how - how did you?"

Bismuthite stared back, frowning but more sad then disappointed. It was the same man he remembered, adorn in that ridiculous cowboy outfit that had made him angry due to its colors and yet still fond for the memories of the man in it. The man before purification. The man before a life on the other side. A man still whole and not changed by time and Wolframite's mismanagement of his feelings.

And he was here, which mean - he had corrupted. Corrupted back to this side. But if that was true, then why hadn't he seen him?

Or maybe, maybe, he just didn't know what he looked like now. Or maybe he hadn't wanted to see him. Maybe not after all that had happened.

But he was here now, staring at him as softly and as gently as he remembered, and there came that little quirk of his mouth. The little turn of a lip that made his heat beat quick and smile in return, giddy even, as if expecting and even hoping for some a*****e commentary about everything that had happened between them that would somehow forgive the past.

"Bis...I'm so sorr-" But a hand was to his lips, moving in to gently kiss him, flooding Wolfarmite with a sense of happiness and belonging, of peace and acceptance, of feeling like a human and a man again. Of someone cherished and treasured. All of these things he buried with his old name and identity, separated from along with their marriage.

It was gone in a instant, and taking his wrist, he started to lead Wolframite through the crowd, not even bothering to glance at his changed arm, accepting that too, and taking him away, Someplace private perhaps to talk. To be alone. To go back to how things were and somehow fix everything. To be the team they used to be.

Everything felt warm and yet he kept wondering, why would Bismuthite corrupt again? Why was he here now? Why had he been so eager in this moment to talk to him and yet didn't before. Everything felt confusing and thick in his mind as he sluggishly moved with the other.

Chariklo, Transcendant Eternal of Seagulls
Roll Total: 5

Chariklo had already caught sight of some faces that she recognized, even if she wasn't terribly familiar with the people those faces belonged too. Of particular note was Castor, since any gathering he got involved in was bound to end up interesting. More worrisome were the Dark Mirror auras that she could feel. The quick glimpse she thought she'd caught of Remarque. Manners dictated that she at least go say hi, but... no. Not unless she absolutely had to. No sense in bringing up bad feelings.

Besides, the flowers were moving and that was so much more interesting and peaceful to think about. As she watched, she could feel the earth trembling, but since it barely registered on her inner Earthquake Alarm™, she ignored it. Besides, all the smaller flowers looked as if they were all merging into one bigger flower and that was incredibly fascinating.

At least until the leaves began to peel back and she got a good look at that bigger flower and felt her stomach lurch. When she saw the 'mouth' open, she half expected to hear the plant demanding to be fed. Instead, she saw little colorful fireflies and wondered if she wasn't just over-reacting. The little things were awfully cute, after all... Reaching up a hand to try and catch one, Chariklo froze and felt the blood drain from her face. Instead of a firefly in her hand, she was holding hands with Bianca.

It looked like Bianca and her late friend was smiling so peacefully. For a moment, Chariklo wanted to throw herself into the other's arms and hug her until her own arms fell off. Hell, who cared about a creepy plant when she had Bianca here?

As if sensing her thoughts, Bianca smiled and began to draw Chariklo towards the plant. And for a moment, the tall senshi wanted nothing more than to follow her best friend to the ends of the earth. Except... except.

"No, hold up," she murmured, balking at following. Bianca didn't speak, just kept smiling. Something was wrong. When she'd last seen Bianca, or Bianca's ghost, Chariklo had gotten the gentlest and most effective lecture of her life. Why didn't this Bianca talk? Chariklo took a few more steps, allowing herself to be pulled forward, then halted again, this time digging her heels literally into the earth.

"This isn't right, Bianca," she said, tears slowly beginning to fill her eyes and travel down her cheek. "Why aren't you talking to me? How are you even here? C'mon, it's me. Why won't you talk to me?"

Mind torn between clarity and the odd peaceful lull that being in Bianca's presence gave her, Chariklo struggled to keep calm. Part of her just wanted to follow and be with Bianca no matter what. The rest of her was screaming that this was wrong. Something was wrong. That little moment of pure clarity was all Chariklo needed to allow her to take a step back and tear her hand from Bianca's.

Bianca just kept smiling and reaching out for her. Taking a step backwards, Chariklo shook her head and folded her arms over her chest. Bianca could be as stubborn as she liked. Chariklo knew she was even more stubborn. Something was wrong and she wasn't moving until she could figure out what it was. And if Bianca wanted to stick around while she tried to work it out, that was fine.

"I really wish you'd say something," she muttered. Bianca simply placed a hand on her forearm and Chariklo took a step or two forward. "I'm not taking another step if you can't be bothered to talk to me. You were happy enough to talk last year when you dressed me down for drinking too much. This really isn't like you at all."

FInally, as a desperation measure, Chariklo covered her eyes with both hands. If she couldn't see Bianca, she couldn't be tempted to move. She was wished that she couldn't feel Bianca standing there, silently trying to draw her forward.

"Not looking, not moving. This isn't right."

Landry Croix

Landry stood alone for some time. It didn’t bother him, in fact he preferred the solitude compared to the other people that were being swamped with face after face already.

No one else was needed, he could do it alone. It came so naturally, why should this pseudo crisis prove any differently?

And yet a hand rested on his shoulder, startling him and forcing him to frown. Who dared to have the audacity to touch him?!

Looking behind, he nearly choked on his own spit. Before him was his father... The man who looked so very much like him, right down to the same glasses. But his gaze was warmer, kinder, everything that Landry just couldn’t be, no matter how hard he tried.

“You’re dead.” It was a simple fact of life, no matter how briefly the illusion held his attention. No matter how deeply he wanted that man before him to be real and to hold him tightly once more. Even with acknowledging that ‘ghost’ of sorts to be a fake, it wouldn’t leave, hovering around him, trying hard to move him forward towards this strange plant that had shook the ground and sprouted up out of no where around the same time.

He needed to focus on something else, anything else. And as naturally as anything else, his eyes rested on Vitriol, the man he had once loved, now his close friend, stumbling forward towards the flower.

It was more than enough to force him to ignore his own plight and rush over to the other Lieutenant, grabbing him by his arm and stopping him from going too much further.

“Vitriol...?” If his own illusion was still haunting him, his friend must have been even more so affected to so blindly stumble towards that rotting flower. “Vitriol, there’s nothing there. You have to stop, no matter how real it seems.”

Lt. Fettelite

The longer he stood there alone, the more nervous he felt. No one was attacking one another, from what he could tell... And yet no one noticed him either.

It was awful, feeling so very alone... Fettel withdrew into his mind for a moment, trying to figure out if he could somehow just go home... Or whereever home would be for the night.

He wanted to turn and run back through those flowers, but before he could, he near jumped out of his skin as a soft voice called out to him from behind.

"Miss Noctua... You're here too...?" He remembered her clearly from that time in Witzend, and he had to force himself from putting her arms around her in a thankful embrace for not leaving him alone here. That feeling passed quickly though, knowing she was not as kind as he hoped she was... In fact, she frightened him but that wasn't anything new. Many things frightened him...

Fear gave away to curiosity as he spotted a familiar tuft of green in the crowd.

"Miss, he's... I-I know that person.. That civilian over there..." It was rude to point, but he did. "I should go to him, he knows me, m-maybe I can protect him..."

He moved from her side a little, closer to the man, enough so to tap his shoulder.

"Nat! I-It's me! I-" the ground rumbled under his feat, and instinctively, he grabbed the man's arm.

Strange lights grabbed his attention immediately, and that sweet, wonderful smell filled his senses. Everything seemed so very overwhelming, and nothing more so than the vision of a beautiful woman before him.

In his confusion and curiosity, he let go of that arm, stumbling forward after that woman who looked like him... Looking at her felt so warm, so absolutely filled with that comfort and love he so deeply craved. Her face was blurred, but he knew who that was... How could he not?

"... Mama..?" It was whispered softly from his lips as he stepped forward to greet that woman. Her hand took his and gripped it tight.. And he didn't hesitate to follow her. For a moment he did consider the fact that he never met her.. That she had died on the operating table the moment he was born, and her affection was something he never had a chance to know.

Yet here she was. And in his sadness and pain and loneliness, he happily followed her along, ignoring that scent of rotten flesh that invaded his nose.

Nataniel Khellasati
Roll Total: 4

It bothered him that he still couldn't explain exactly why he was here, or why any of them were here. And there did seem to be... quite a few people gathered. Strangely, Nataniel found that he actually recognized a handful of the faces from recent odd encounters. No one he would actually approach, of course, but to see the different faces in the same place seemed... unusual. Much of the experience was unusual.

And then, to make matters even more complicated, he heard his name. ‘Nat! It’s me!’ Hands were on him, tapping his shoulder, then outright grabbing him. Who the actual hell thought he was in any position to want to be accosted in this crowd?

Nataniel’s dark gaze flicked around to the boy as the earth rumbled, less familiar than several other faces in the mass. “You’re mistaken.” He wasn't, oddly. The boy knew his name for some reason. Someone Nataniel had never seen before in his life knew his name and felt comfortable enough to touch him. Until he wasn’t, anymore. Nat’s eyes narrowed. “Mama?” He repeated in mild disgust. Obviously he was no such thing.

The boy, after realizing this, released him and moved away.

Should he stop him? If nothing else, than just to ask why a stranger was speaking to him as though he knew him. Instead, there was only a delicate aroma. Nat’s attention was off the boy the second he turned to search for him. Nataniel has never been one to give affection easily. Even when he was small, it was more a prize to be won rather than something freely given. Few had earned it. Fewer had lost it.

But in his early days- his very early days, a time of just his parents and himself, no little brother- he’d had a dog. It had been some unidentified mutt, shaped like a sausage, with stubby legs and fur that looked like pepper and a thick blue collar tattered from years of use. She’d been old; he’d known that.

But boy did she love him.

Rationally, Nataniel knew she was gone. It had been his first experience with death. ’All things die, Nataniel,’ his mother had told him when he was six. And somehow, if he remembered one thing she’d ever said to him, that was it. But when Pepe bounced toward him, he wanted for an instant for that to not be the case. It felt as though it shouldn’t be. Nat took several steps after the pudgy creature as it moved off.

It wasn’t reasonable, though. He stalled, and his attention diverted briefly to others, most of the other people around him, moving in the same direction. What were they doing? Why? Why would he see and think of a creature that hadn’t been in his life in almost twenty years? Ridiculous.

He knew it was ridiculous, but so was much of what had been happening to him lately, and all of that seemed to be real. Pepe trotted nearer again, in her attempts to make him follow her, and he thought, perhaps if he just touched her...
