"It could be worse and it still is no match to our winters, sun or not. And yes, that was a little before we graduated. So we were stuck, though we did hear all that had happened. And you know you will get a dragon soon enough, I have faith of that. Just be patient, your dragon will come when you least expect it,"she assured him gently.

Rhiyn agreed. Their winters could be cold and miserable, but he’d grown up experiencing them. The heat they’d experienced had been nothing in comparison—but it had still been awful! “You have so much faith,” he said. “I’ve been waiting, I don’t know if I ever will.”
He had to try, didn’t he? He had to be the best dragonrider. For G’ret, for Dea too. He wanted to impress her almost as much as he wanted to Impress a dragon.

That was why I had to wait, since I had to have the dragon that was meant for me. You have been waiting, but that will just make it that much better when you get him or her,"she reminded.

Rhiyn wanted to believe it. He really did. Something in the back of his mind kept him from it, though. He offered her a shrug. “I suppose you’re right,” he said. “But the longer I don’t have a dragon, the further behind I am. Look at you, you’ve already made something of yourself! And I’m nothing. I get to peel tubers.” He sighed. “It’s hard to have faith on the other side.”

"I know it can be, but I will try to have enough faith for both of us. As for me, I am not that far removed from being a Weyrling though. Yeah, I am a rider now, but that took a lot of hard work. I know it feels like forever, but I know you will have your dragon before you know it. Then you can show him or her off to your heart's content,"she smiled.

She was right. It did feel like forever. It’d been over a turn since she’d impressed and he’d been left in the candidate barracks. He’d have to go through weyrling lessons before he got to where she was.
“I hope he comes soon,” he said. “I have a lot of time to catch up on!”

A greenrider? Him? Rhiyn made a face. “Nah,” he said. “I’m going to be a bronzerider like my brother.” It was only fair to assume, wasn’t it? People said no one knew why a dragon chose their rider, or what made the decision happen. But he wanted to be like R’te, even if his older brother was useless in the ways of romance.
“Or maybe a brown... Like G’ret.”

"You never know what color dragon may chose you, except a gold, of course. Any of the other colors may find you perfect and I want you to love them with everything you have. Heck, you might even get a white you know, someone for you to protect..like you protect me,"she reminded. She smiled softly when he suggested he might ride what one of his brothers rode/had ridden. Those were just as possible, it really was up to whatever dragon was his.

A white?! Rhiyn sputtered at the idea. He may not have considered himself a High Reaches idealist, but he had been raised there. Whites struggled to keep up with the other dragons. They were tiny and weak. He wouldn't know what to do with a white dragon.
"Maybe," he agreed, after a moment. He looked over and smiled at her. "I'll always protect you, whatever color dragon I Impress."

Demanthra saw the way he sputtered and had a good idea why. After all, they both had grown up here and whites were not seen in the most positive light. While Monath did not have any white siblings, she knew Gyafrith and Iptoneth had two white siblings. She felt that every dragon had a purpose, no matter how big or small they were.
"I know you will, you have been good at that. And I will be cheering you on, no matter what color picks you,"she smiled.

That was a relief at least, she wouldn’t lose interest in him due to the color he Impressed. Nightmares never got real life right, but it was hard to know which was real and which was his subconscious’ imagination. He’d lost Demanthra so often in dreams that he’d asked for advice.
T’rel had been no help. But now he had Dea, and he wouldn’t lose her. “I’ll impress soon, I hope.”

Rhiyn doubted it. People always acted like time went by so fast, but it didn’t. It went by so slowly, and then after the time had passed it didn’t seem like so long. “Looking amazing?” He echoed, smirking slightly. He liked that idea. Looking amazing up on his dragon...

"Of course you will, I can't see you looking anything else but wonderful up there. And trust me, it is one thing to be on someone else's dragon, but a whole other thing on your own. It is almost like you are flying yourself, as connected as you are with your dragon,"she smiled.
