Shahar (outfit) - Kitchen with Bo and Anne and wine and a WHAT THE F IS THAT

Shahar had eyed where Bo had pointed, and had some serious regrets about her lack of alcohol when a monster stumbled from the shadows. Not a youma, no; this had seemingly been human, once upon a time, but... it was... "Red Lyrium?" she mused, and leaned in. Was- it had to be a costume, that could not be... a person. Her mind wanted to deny her eyes. It had to be a costume. Had to be. Shay, help! Ladies, watch out!

The cry of her companion jerked her mind from the screaming it was indulging in, and Shahar pulled herself up to her full height. Instinct had her reaching for that vibrating, buzzing, chaotic strength that had been there for years and had been cut off from her- and it was still empty, non-responsive. Great. She was used to fighting people, even as a civilian, not... whatever this was... and as it came for them, she rocked back on her heels.

Her weapons was herself, aided by pastries, and an entire kitchen. Yet Shahar had been Titanite or so long, that there was a curl of doubt that she would be able to make a difference, here, now, and powerless. "Bo, Anne!" her voice was sharp, firm. "Get down, and keep something solid between it and you. Find something to use as a weapon, even if it is just that stupid pastry basket! Now, please and thank you."

Make yourself the biggest target. She moved, doing just that, wishing she had worn flatter shoes so she could be using her legs- extra range and all. Shar didn't skip leg day. hopefully she had not skipped hand-to-hand day too often. She punched out at the monster- hopefully, in this scenario it was a person who would regret making such a horrifically realistic Halloween costume, who would promptly scream and they would all laugh and maybe go back to the main group, lesson learned.

Yet even as she attacked, she could hear it- a clap of thunder, and the words, echoing in an unfamiliar voice- She wakes! She wakes! Her time to feed has come! Hurry hurry! Grab what you can else you'll never make it home again!

This was bad. Shahar had never been one for haunted houses.

Bo Hanley is in the kitchen with Bo and Anne (+Mahogany & Vivianne) -- and the defeated beast.

The tall, lanky man could follow directions, which was exactly what he did. He ambled backwards to take partial shelter behind the nearby counter with Anne (well, tugging her along), grabbing the nearest weapon -- which happened to be the wine bottle. Just as soon as he lofted it in a defensive stance, Shahar punched the monster-thing like a champion.

"I don't really believe in bad trips," he said, "but this feels like a bad trip. Is that... a real deformed person thing? Or... costume? Or... bad trip?" Then, after a beat: "Did everyone else hear what I just heard? About someone waking up?"

Who knew what Bo was on that evening, but it was clearly having some sort of reaction. The wine bottle in his hands dumped a little more wine so he promptly flipped it back the other way, downed the last few gulps, and then resumed his protective stance in front of Anne, waiting for Mahogany and Vivianne to similarly take shelter behind Shahar, their appointed protector.

Mahogany Shapour -- Kitchen

Mahogany ignored the nudge. In normal circumstances, he would have turned as well, but these weren't normal circumstances. Now he was unable to mitigate his elitism, preferring to ignore the help in favor of helping himself. He didn't turn until he had found a bottle of tequila, and even then his offer to share was halfway out of his mouth before he noticed what h=was happening in the kitchen around them.

"Dunno if you're a tequila girl but -- WOAH!"

Mahogany recoiled against the counter, scrambling to get on top of that as though it might save him. Higher ground, right? But that was all he was able to do and once he was on top of the counter, his brain ran out of ideas and he froze. There was a woman fighting in front of him, and he registered that vaguely, but only just. All he could see -- all that was filling his vision and his understanding, was the monster in front of him, shambling around. No. Not a monster. Reanimated dead. A zombie.

Fear registered next. Bone-deep, soul-rending fear. His knuckles were white around the neck of the bottle as he watched the corpse stumble around with alarming swiftness. Be it for comfort or as a shield, Mahogany grabbed for the arm of the girl who had dragged him into this position and began to shake. Hard. So hard that the liquid in the bottle he was holding began to audibly slosh around. He wanted to scream. He could feel the sound boiling up from the pits of his stomach, burning his throat on it's way up only to be stopped by his teeth, his jaw locked shut. The only sound that could escape was a pathetic little whine from his nose.

Until that was, the voice from the entertainment room shocked his mouth open and allowed the scream to finally escape. Long and loud and hard. A sound that frightened Mahogany himself, having never felt real fear of life and limb before.

Heather Beauchamp -- Entertainment Room

Sudden announcement from the basement in conjunction with the way Jeff was being eaten alive by crystals prompted Heather to nearly leap out of her skin and closer to the woman with the journal and the book. She even reached out for a moment in search of comfort from the stranger before she pulled her hands back again. But fear soon gave way to a grave understanding. They had to move. Now.

"Miss, if the crystal is overtaking that man, there is nothing to suggest that it won't spread to feed on the rest of us. We need to move from this room at the very least. We have a plan. We should act on it."

Evren Returning to the entertainment room

Eyes widening at what she saw took a deep breath. Covering her ears at the scream she could hear she wondered what could she do exactly. Evren looked around the room... there has got to be something... anything to tell her what she could do in this situation.

The crystal in her pant pocket, Maria, a corpse, was unable to stop her but Penny would feel a sense of wrongness. Like they might not be crystals at all. Warm, pulsating under the hard surface with something- moving, alive.

The creature crumpled like paper, falling against a wall where it let out a gurgle of pain and angish as it fused itself there, red crystal melting in places to shards and a skeleton now visible under the translucent surface. As it fused to the wall, the red glow dimmed, until it no longer glowed at all.
With the creature dead, they were temporarily safe. How long this would remain so was unknown, as the sound of shambling figured started to emanate from the basement door not far off, and figures outside seemed to be coming closer.

Anne to her credit, or lack of, was trembling and clinging to Bo.
"We need to hide-" She looked at them with wide, frightened doe eyes. "There- there is a key to the attic! Patrick has it! Maybe we could hide there?"

Jada

The raven let out a caw like laughter. "What holds up but when it falls takes the whole thing with it?" Beady black eyes looked at Jada. "Pillar! Pillar! Not a Poe! I am not a writing desk- but what is when I am?" His head cocked side to side.
"The witches toil and trouble so tonight cauldron is set to boil. And now it's all boiling over. They stirred the pot too much and now it's gone wild and rife with spice!" They cackled again.
"You ask many questions, Jada, sister of she-who-kills-with-light." The raven made itself home on her head and in her hair.
"Ask the right ones. No more nonsense- even if nonsense is the only sense you will find here."

Heather

Pillar cocked his head at her, blinking.
"You understand Pillars and fallen monuments?" It asked. "To se the fall, you must see the rise- and you can rise with the right tools. Would you like to know how?" It cackled. "I won't tell you- but the child of fortune and fate with a forgotten mind will not mind you. He minds none since his was stolen."

Patrick was in the foyer, looking forlorn at the stairs leading to the second floor. Almost like he wanted to go, but could not.

Bo Hanley is leaving the kitchen and going to find Patrick on the stairs in the foyer.

Mahogany was screaming, and Bo jumped almost more at that than he had at the now-dead creature. Shahar was badass, and Anne was at his side, offering them a place to hide. "We could maybe get onto the roof from the attic. Sounds like an adventure -- nothing to be afraid of!" Did that make Mahogany feel better? Bo hoped so! Bo lived to make people feel better (and avoid all unpleasantness).

Grabbing Anne's hand, Bo waved for Shay and the others to follow. There weren't many rooms, and it didn't take them long to find Patrick on the stairs. (Somehow, Bo had managed to walk by Jeff without noticing it, or atleast he chose to ignore the horrorshow happening on the pool table.) Through the murmuring, he was able to identify Patrick was the head butler -- the same one on the stairs in the foyer.

"Patrick, hey man," Bo ventured with a friendly smile, taking a step on to the stairs beside him, his own towering height barely affected by standing one landing down. "Anne says you have a key to the attic -- can we have it please?"

Penny Figgins is in the entertainment room, near Maria's body, in possession of two red crystals.

Penny had found both crystals, but once they were in her hands, they didn't quite seem like what she had seen on the battlefields lofted by royals. They pulsed and she jumped, almost as much as the tiny woman jumped at the sounds from the basements, the voices echoing, the horrors of what was happening to Jeff. Something was coming, she felt naked, and all she had were two mystery rocks and a painful nicotine craving.

Running back to the pool table, Penny examined both crystals for any hint of how to use it or what to do with it and then, feeling a sense of DO SOMETHING, held the Jeff!crystal out toward his body, hoping it might (oh, for ******** sake, she wasn't sure) go back into him and reverse whatever had started with his death.

Adaline Prescott in the Foyer

Trey had abandoned her just like the redheaded girl who seemed annoyed by her presence. Adaline didn't seem to be put off by Queenie's distaste for her, because people reacted like that around her all the time, but she did get distressed when Trey left her.

She was lost without someone to cling to and while there were so many questions on the tip of her tongue she simply couldn't process anything because so much was happening and her reaction time was just...bad.

And someone died. No two people died and things started getting freaky and when the crystal started engulf the body and suddenly the man wasn't dead and her response was to let out a shriek and grab ahold of the person closest to her, which happened to be Katie.

"What type of haunted house did we get locked in!!"

Fiona Watson in the Dining Room

Pat had left them to check on the body and Fiona hadn't followed right away, even though instinct insisted she did. She didn't want to helicopter her capable boyfriend, who was just as suited to check a dead body as she was.

But then things progressed from strange and slightly spooky to concerning.

She found herself reaching for Jack's hand, though it was unclear if it was for her benefit or for the other woman's. Or if it was to keep her close. If things got ugly...she was the one who'd invited the girl out with them and she felt responsible.

Once the crystal started to form she moved, bringing Jack with her when she went to collect Pat and tug him out of the Entertainment room and away from whatever was happening.

"I don't like this," she said, though it was a given. "We need to get away from whatever that thing is."

Shahar (outfit) - In the foyer, following Bo

It was a relief when the monster crumpled, and Shahar's gut gave an uncomfortable flutter as it collapsed, and melted, and there were more- holy ********, there were more, and Shahar reached out to grab for a weapon- they were in the kitchen, for crying out loud- before following Bo towards the foyer. Her ears were ringing from the frightened scream, but she pushed gently at the person before leaving the kitchen.

"I have had many bad trips," she assured him thickly, "And none of them melted into the floor, afterwards." she clenched her fists, inspecting to make sure she hadn't cut herself somehow on a crystal. "As for the other, I do not know who is waking up, but I do not want to meet them. At least the attic will have a good vantage point to see if help can be found, or maybe get a better signal? In the rain, I do not think going onto the roof should be any more than a last resort."

She paused briefly near the entertainment room, eyes flickering, before she continued after the man and the young waitress. And passed them, stalking casually towards the man she had spoken to, earlier. "Did you ever find what you needed in the bathroom, Patrick?" She recognized the face, and now had a name for the waiter who had been so uncomfortably treated by his employers. "If so, we could really use your help, now."

Jada (outfit)- Entertainment Room moving to Foyer- has arcane journal, and a raven on her head

Her curls were becoming a nest, and Jada was suddenly made much more aware that something was going wrong, with screaming, and... pulsing crystals, and... something was waking, and Pillar was telling riddles, and Jada's gut was knotted with anxiety, for her daughter at home, and her siblings, tucked warm in their beds, and for her homeworld, so disconnected from her now as to make her have to fight to keep from being sick. The Transcended felt weak and sick, but pushed her way forward anyways, starting to make her way out of the circle of friends and acquaintances.

Sister of she-who-kills-with-light. It was an oddly long title, and the fact that the bird knew her name wasn't a surprise, with... it had potentially been here, after all, for some time. The witches brought to mind only the Rose sisters, and Jada squared her bare shoulders. "Yes," she agreed with Heather, and clamped the book tighter to her chest, "We should get moving."

Ask the right questions. Jada hadn't felt this uncertain in... too long, now, not since she had bound herself to her homeworld. "Pillar," she asked instead, limiting her question to what she hoped would be a clear one, "Other than whatever key we may be looking for," Jada was careful to use Heather's terminology, "and maybe this book, what else will we need to stop the... cauldron from bubbling over?"

Jada moved towards the Foyer, waiting for her companions to catch up, and casting a look at the corpses of Jeff and Maria. Yep. Definitely needed out, before she was next.

"Most of the books were fairly in-line to what one might expect. A few on fashion, history, economics, business management, but as she would look closer a few titles would stand out. There were a few in depth doctor guides on cancer treatments, a few on black magic that looked vaguely authentic, and one book, so well worn, the letters had rubbed away."

"Both Roses ignored Jada- pointedly so. Yet the books held more promise. The well worn book you grabbed in particular seemed to be a
journal of sorts. News clippings, articles plastered here and there along with photos. As you flip the pages one thing stands out- The connection to more arcane healing rituals and claims."

"The other books looked more traditional in terms of mainstream consumption for 'magic' or 'witchery'. Only the
old tome seems even semi-authentic. "

"The dates of the articles stand out- many are from the
80s. They detail strange events happening in Tokyo. Then, they skip forward to the last 10 years, all about strange events and cancer treatments."

"At first, you wouldn't expect the voice to respond but it does- and oh boy it make itself known.
"To go below you ask help from above!" The voice replied, tone mirthful despite the goings on. Down from the shadows a large raven flies landing atop Jada's head, claws prickling her scalp. "Oh you're a short one! Shame and a pity- But yes yes- that's the thing. Nothing! What goods a book to do without a recipe to brew? Words on paper make a poor potion." The bird is clearly normal- save the voice that is eerily human coming from it."

Bo

The arrival of Bo and Co. made the man jump, a look of guilt on his face. "I-" He shook his head. "I should but- I can't. You don't understand what's going on, what they did. I was so stupid, I saw everything, I should have known but-" He kept shaking his head.
"I- The attic won't have anything to help you. But, it might help figure out what is going on, what happened." He pulled a golden key from his breast pocket, "Just- I can't 'Give' it to you. That's part of the 'rules' they made. You have to take it."
Anne gave the man a withering glare, but said nothing, hanging off Bo's arm much like a ragdoll cat that just went where it was told.

The raven cawed in annoyance.
"A story already written offers nothing but the past! But the past can come from the present, and we can make the future. But only if we go forwards and not backwards until back is front and front is back!"
It pecked Jada's head in annoyance.
"Up is down as down is up. To get to where you need to go you must want to go. The bubbles will carry you up up and up! But be careful on the way down. Because once the bubble are gone, nothing will be there to catch you when you fall."

It hummed, an odd sound a raven to make.
"I am what kills and maims, and can be ornate or plain. Blacksmiths make me, maidens make me from nothing, and with the right mind I become death in the right hands. Everything or nothing at all, I am weilded and used for a single purpose, and my purpose is clear if it is not what I am made for. I am what you need, if you plan to stop the mother from her feed."[/red]

Penny

As Penny placed the crystal back near Jeff's consumed form, it fused into the mass, a single pulse of red light before it went dark and the crystal became foggy, Jeff no longer visible.

Then- cracks. A series of cracks in the demented coffin of red the fragments slowly broke apart and off the form under-neither until a half decayed thing remained- one part former man, one part crystal monstrosity.
It was beginning to stir awake.

Bo is in the foyer, about to head to the attic, in posession of a golden key.

A wiser person may have heard Patrick's words and felt caution. Bo was not a wiser person. He took the golden key from Patrick and gave him a forcible fist bump. "Thanks, man!" Bo patted Anne's hand comfortingly and looked back to Shahar with a thumbs up.

Then, back to Anne, "Do you know how to get to the attic? Lead the way, as it were!"

When the crystal began to fuse with Jeff, Penny wrenched her hand back like it had been burnt, but the crystal stayed, flashing and then going foggy. Her plan had worked... sort of. Whatever this thing was that remained where Jeff had been, it seemed to be alive. "********," she said, taking two big steps back. "That's what I get for trying to be helpful." Okay, so Jeff had been cute and whatever, but not enough to die for.

Running was a temporary solution. So instead she looked for the best weapon option she could find and wondered idly what the hell she should do with that second red crystal. Apparently it just changed people into monsters. Unless she could forcefeed one to the Roses, she wasn't sure how it was going to help her.

Suri Ellis - Entertainment Room to the Foyer

The situation was deteriorating far too quickly for a place where Suri couldn't transform. She watched with pursed lips as crystal overtook the form of the corpse, as another member of the staff succumbed to whatever force was at work, and quietly she took Queenie's hand and withdrew from the table, having seen quite enough to know that she wanted nothing to do with it for her or her subordinate. Her assessment was doubled down when the original casualty began to twitch and writhe in agony as crystal began to overtake him. Nope. She didn't want a thing to do with that.

But then there was the matter of that damn bird.

It wasn't the hellbird she'd seen at the monument--too small for that, too few eyes, but it talked and was of course disgustingly cryptic. "Remind you of anyone?" she murmured darkly to Queenie, only to be startled by its sudden screech--She wakes! She wakes! Her time to feed has come!

Suri didn't want to be in the room with crystal reanimating corpses and didn't want to follow the bird, but between the two she chose the devil she knew, following the group back towards the main hall. However, before she left, she looked for a pool cue or something similar to hold, should she need to defend herself. "I am what kills and maims...ugh. This is ridiculous. Are you really going to spit riddles at us, if we have so little time?" Suri already had little patience, but when it came to corvids it ran especially thin.

Katie Catigern - Foyer

Wow, these people were really committed if they were going to have the lights go out and everything. Katie stood passively in the foyer for a few minutes, her phone set as a flashlight while she simply...drank in the ambiance, more delighted than scared. It was all so spooky, and something about the house really rattled her bones in an uneasy way.

It was perfect.

The other guests seemed really into it, too, which finally got Katie inspired to actually start investigating the area. She started with the portraits, which were eerie enough on their own, but the longer she stared at them the more she felt reminded of another grand hall...

...She looked away just in time to be grabbed by a distressed (but cute) girl.

"The spoooooooky kind, that's what," she responded warmly, resting a hand on the girl's outstretched arm. "It wouldn't be a Halloween party if it wasn't. Are you okay?"
