His hand rose up and he idly brushed aside Ever's hair as he looked up at the ceiling.
"You know if you have no one who cares long enough to stay a night, who really has your back when you are on the battlefield? People are selfish and prioritize. If someone invested their time and feelings into someone more than another, that person gets tossed aside. But even the longer relationship can be booted for a fling. They're fickle like that. But who am I to say one is better or worse? It's equally unreliable. Does Zeke like anyone more than you?"
He said, turning his head down to look at him. "Would he save you?"

For a long moment, Ever didn't answer -- distracted more by what that all said about Melvin than actually concerned for his own safety. He chewed on it, hands lacing over his chest and a little knot between his eyebrows. When he finally spoke it was slow, ignoring the question. "Melvin, many people on this island care about me enough that they'd save me. And even those who don't, still would. It's what we do, and part of our mission statement. I save strangers every time we go out." He focused, slowly, on Melvin's face. "Do you really think that without a specific kind of relationship, people would just forget about you and leave you behind?"

"Not everyone follows a mission statement. Most go for their own skin and wants."
"That's you saving them but I mean priority. When the guns are pointed and they had to choose one or the other. To let go of you or someone else or even just to keep running and leave you behind. Yeah. People will do that. I've dealt with it already. I've heard it during the Sahara while I held a bleeding body and there was talk to toss them to a titan. Everyone is just one made relstionship away from being disposible." He said, looking slowly as him.
"Just don't wanna see you let go." He was only just starting to be friends with him.

"I was there, in the Sahara. I would have helped anyway." He squinted just a bit at Melvin, pushing himself up on one elbow while he considered. "I can't believe that people would callously refuse to help each other without a reason." It was brutal, blunt, but not exactly unkind. Ever shook his head a tiny bit. "I was fishing newbies out right and left. There must have been a reason."

"Just cause you are good doesn't mean other people will be. It's a mistake if you expect them to return the favor. To expect decency....they can justify cruel actions.....make up reasons......ones that seem good to them......." He said, feeling that sad truth settle into him.

His eyes went back into focus and he breathed out, sitting up. "I'm sorry. This isn't a good conversation. We should...talk about something else." He had wandered off mentally.
He scrambled for a change of subject. "You're hair is soft."

A beat, surprised -- and then Ever snorted just a little, reaching up to brush at his own hair, and look around the place. It was a strange place to be having this conversation, for sure, and so he let Melvin redirect. "Well, thanks, I guess? We should probably pick something, but I don't...I don't care that much. Something not too pricy? Maybe the harder one, then we can beat it to do something more fun."

He swung his legs over and nodded, running his hand through his hair as he took a breath, refocused, and let the sinking feeling of the previous moment's topic pass. They came. It just took a moment to realize to force them to go.
"Alright, let's go look at prices. Let's look at the catalog and see the prices." He directed him over, ignoring the salesman who was still talking to an elderly couple who were now in a discussion about their back.
He pulled the catalog over and showed him prices. "I think it was this brand here. They have twin to California king in sizes. I don't think a California can even fit in your dorm right not until you upgrade." He said, waiting for Ever to see and compare the price tags he was most comfortable with.

All of it was expensive outside of Ever's price range. He poured over them uneasily, arms folded across his chest, looking nervous again -- not because he couldn't afford it, but just the idea of dropping that much all at once was overwhelming. Eventually, he'd drag himself to a mid level one, because there was no point to this if he just bought another cheap one, was there? Queen sized. Medium firm. Nothing fancy, but it seemed fairly nice to him. "...they'll deliver it?" He sounded a bit dubious, head tilted to the side. All they'd have to do was flag down someone who worked there.

"Yes. I have the address Deus uses closest to this portal. If you order things online, they have one for that, but larger items need to go their one location. They will notify you when it arrives since the normal portals aren't build for bringing in entire living room sets and you will need to get help transporting it over to your dorm room. We can borrow a dolly when that time comes. So this one is your choice? Alright." He looked over the dimensions. "We can pick a headboard or anything else in a shop over."
He flagged down the salesman who seemed very happy to have an excuse from leaving the elderly couple and after a few discussions and the exchanging of a fake home address, signing paperwork, and using Ever's card, the purchase was made and the final receipts handed over to Ever. "Seems you have a special gift of a set of pillows with this one." He pointed out.
"We can pick up sheets and pillowcases that will fit your new mattress. The Quartermaster only carries the standard size." He informed him, leading him out of the mattress store and giving him a pat on the back. "Congrats. You have a bigger bed all to yourself." Since he wasn't the snuggling type it seemed.

"I don't mind sharing it." It was amused, more than anything else -- pleased with his purchase, carefully folding up the receipt into a small, tidy square that he could tuck into one pocket. Ever flashed Melvin a grin, raised his shoulders in a shrug. "A headboard would be nice, though. Something a bit sturdy, maybe. Metal?" He looked up, in search of the store, his eyes narrowed just a bit. "Do you mind? Should only take me a couple minutes..."

Melvin smiled back at him. "My bed is bigger." He said, leaving that as that as he walked out with him into the bustle of the mall.
"I don't mind. I enjoy just being out and about with a purpose in mind. We can decide where the hell we are eating then." He said, moving with Ever down the walkways and around people before returning to hooking his arm about his arm just to keep Ever from being distracted by cops or arising suspicions. The last thing they needed as 2 dead people was for the cops to pull them into mall security because they looked shifty.
They entered a furniture place soon after, and somewhere he could smell a spiced candle of some sort. "Headboards should be back there, but look around for something you might like." Ever seemed hesitant on purchasing the mattress but now that the wallet was open, more purchases were just another step. "Maybe ask them what pieces accent the old grain of a medieval rack." He joked.

"Oxidized metal." It was dry, looking around, fingers light in his hair. A little bit unsettled while he considered. "You figure out where you want to eat, I don't care. I'll just go search around and see what a pain in the a** it would be to ship this, and set it up, and everything?" He took a step back even as he said it, head tipped just slightly to one side. If Melvin agreed, he could poke around in search of something sturdy enough; austere, but not unattractive. This time, maybe, Ever could manage it on his own. He just needed to poke around a bit.

"Here is the address to ship it. Deus will contact you when it arrives. When just get some help to move it over to your dorm and up the stairs. If you need it, just text me. I've assembled enough shelves, bed frames, and dressers to have an idea what to do."
He moved around slowly, hand slowly brushing over various pieces of wooded furniture, his eye more for comfort and the organic. Rich mahoganies, soft velvet textures, and someplace he could rest, relax.....curl up alone.
His eyes caught a white leather chair and he had a moment where he just stared at it before looking away and sitting down upon a deep purple loveseat and sighed.

Probably for the best that Melvin didn't follow him -- because he certainly wouldn't have approved of the low-end headboard Ever settled on. It probably wouldn't last long, but that would be a lesson all unto itself, a learning experience. Twenty minutes, maybe, Melvin could sit and relax. Then he reappeared, with more receipts to tuck into his pocket. Ever shrugged just a bit. "Want to do one of your errands...?"

"Alright then." He said, rising up and leading the way. Errands were easy since he knew where to go, taking a walk over to go grocery shopping but placing his order for pickup and then calling up for a hotel in the meantime so he could maybe get a rental the next day to drive around.
After getting groceries, he used the available internet to place a few online orders before he called them a Uber to a BBQ restaurant that he liked. Once they had gotten a seat, he ordered a whiskey and also a lemonade before looking at the menu. "It's on me." He mentioned, not looking up from his menu.
