And because he was (roughly) fourteen, and not five, he knew better. "Where's Mark?" It was a weird world where he trusted someone less than he trusted Mark. "Is he okay with this?"

"Mark should be back soon." She sighed, feeling herself actually start to calm down again. "As for okay with things, I don't think he knows about the dragon. Answer one for me now." They were totally trading answers, right?

Sherry did her very best to put command into it, to draw on the gift she'd been given. "Carl, tell me: What is it you want?"

It wasn't an unreasonable question, after all.

He struggled to resist for a second, and it was only a split second. Fear and shock melted away to an entirely blank expression as he simply said a single word. "Her."

Despite the simple enough question, Sherry could feel the ring press on, it wanted to hear more and its control grew stronger, even the corridor itself shifting to gold, and Sherry's question became twisted, the word want replaced with desire and then purpose.

And in that moment an unspeakable rage crossed his expression until it was impossible not to see who he actually was and he looked directly at Sherry as if he remembered everything-

- but the moment was gone and there was just this kid facing the corridors of endless gold. "Power against the legacies," he said, the last buried fragments of whatever this remainder of him had unraveled, "they have a flaw."

No amount of further pushing or pressing would reveal anything else however, because Carl just did not know.

It was never simple, was it? Sherry had hoped beyond hope that his answer was going to be something vile, something malicious, something that would make her choice easy. A wish to kill them all in their sleep, or turn the world to ash, something she could justify killing him for.

The truth of things was never easy. Never simple. The ring had drawn more out him than Sherry had bargained for. Caelius. Carl. The reason he was 'a blight' in the dragon's eyes.

She'd known, she'd always known what had given her the ring. She'd also always kind of lied to herself about it. Legacies weren't all bad, right? She'd been given a gift, after all. A gift of truth. A gift of command. Something to help her be a leader. Something that proved she was strong and worthy and could be great.

Armagnac whispered in her head.

Yes. I want the power to help. That was why she'd accepted the gift. "But I..." Sherry sank to the floor.

She didn't want to lose the gift. More than anything she'd relished the idea that she'd been chosen. That she'd been special. Sadly, she was beginning to think the dragon had chosen poorly.

Sherry was weak. If he'd been a normal kid, or a creepy kid, who knew. He wasn't, though. Sherry was weak, and she was loyal.

"I can't kill him." She could. It would be so easy, if he were almost anyone else. "I won't."

"THEN I WILL", roared the voice, and it was deafening, and all Sherry could see was the endless eyes of the serpent. A moment later, she felt her own body move, felt her own legs pick up and forcefully walk forward, felt her weapon defiled as it was forcefully summoned.

Her finger, her entire hand hurt, pain arcing through every step she took - the ring was controlling her.

Sherry had assumed the dragon would just leave her, or at worst kill her. Instead it was going to use her. Which, some tiny part of her brain that wasn't panicking thought, it had been all along.

Everything wrong and even though she tried to will her feet to stop, tried to desummon Armagnac, she tried, and she couldn't. Her head was still ringing, and her vision was nothing but gold - deep gold eyes she didn't want to get lost in.

No, no, no, panic and desperation. As much as Sherry wanted to be more than what she was, she was a Hunter, plain and simple. Killing Carl, killing one of their best hopes against the legacies, no.

It hurt, pain searing every movement, but Sherry fought. If she could just remove the ring - Sherry felt it slip.

There was a deafening shriek, it felt like metal scraping against metal and the the clattering of a thousand, a million gold pieces all roaring at once-

- And then it was over and the ring faded, just a piece of metal.

The voice was gone.

The overall good news was that it also meant Sherry wasn't about to go on a murderous rampage over division lead-slash-children any time soon, though the bad news was that said other person was long gone, because there was nothing like straight up murder that didn't make anyone run the other direction.

And because it seemed nothing could go right for Sherry today, it was at that exact point that Mark turned the corner, took a look at the walls, which were gouged in strange scorch marks, and then back at Sherry, holding a DVD player and his Surface Pro. "What'd I miss?"

The sound hurt. Sherry only realized she had full control again because she realized she was clutching at her head.

She was huffing and puffing and trying her best to get her bearings - s**t. Carl was gone. Not that she blamed him. No sign of Carl, no sign of large gold dragons... Except what it had done to the walls. Some tiny part of Sherry wondered if she'd have to pay for that.

Before she could take more than one faltering step in an vain attempt to find her charge, Mark showed up. Sherry stared at him rather dumbly for a moment, wondering just how much she should say.

"Um. A big gold dragon tried to use me to kill Carl." Sherry didn't have the energy to lie. "Mark, why is Caelius Carl?"

Mark nearly dropped the DVD player. "Wait wait wait hold on, is this big gold dragon by any chance your weapon because why on earth-" he inhaled- "No I guess it's reasonable, I mean Life Division and all but - how did you - no wait back up, nobody's dead right?"

She was really looking forward to that DVD player, Mark, pls have care. (Not like some babysitters with Carl.)

Sherry took a moment to sort the questions. This must be what folks felt when she rapid fired questions at them.

"I don't see a body, so I think he's safe." From her. The rest of the island? Maybe. "And no. Armagnac wishes she was that big and terrifying. I made a deal with it," she lifted the ring, "a while back. It's, um. Okay yeah it's definitely a legacy and it definitely doesn't like Cael--Carl's goals."

"Why is Carl Carl and not...You know. What's going on, Mark?"

"Uhhhh," Mark began, suddenly sweating quite profusely, "memory wipe!"

Juggling everything precariously in one arm, he took out a pen and clicked it a few times at Sherry. It obviously did not work.

He sighed, "Look, if I give you this DVD player, and I give you this for free by the way, out of the kindness of like my own heart, can you please not tell anyone else about Carl until Rep has fixed everything, and maybe also because I'm super sexy and stuff can you also explain the whole legacy ring thing and why you're playing Frodo with it."

"Are you trying to Men in Black me?" She might not remember exactly what they called it, but she had liked the movie.

Sherry's sigh was one of fatigue and exasperation. "I'll keep quiet about it, no need to bribe me with my own DVD player."

She looked down at the ring again, and then put it back on her finger. It still fit just as snug. "As for the ring..." Mark better want a story cause he was getting a story. "A while back during one of the red/green legacy whatever outbreaks -I don't really remember what else was going on- I found a sparkly thing and I touched it. It called to me, okay."

She twisted the ring on her finger. "The gold dragon said I was worthy and offered me the power of command. Like, all I had to do was command it and people would tell me the truth. I accepted."

Sherry frowned. "It made me ask Carl a question."

Mark watched Sherry pick up the ring and put it back on, caught in between trying to still look cool in front of her and actually saying something. He instead just stared, wondering if he should very subtly loan her the full uncut version of Lord of the Rings as precautionary tale for that new DVD player.

"Uh, that sounds- maybe you shouldn't touch things," he began, helpfully, before amending - "Like I mean if a legacy artifact, which that's what I'm assuming is what it is, is telling you it's going to give you power, that's like one of those catch twenty-two situations you know where you know you're going to have a bad time afterwards." He really wanted to say something to her about her putting on the ring again. "How are you feeling now, not like evil or trying to take over the world or kill anyone or anything?"

A pause. A thought occurred. "What the heck could it have possibly wanted from Carl"?

"I know, I know," Sherry muttered looking down at the ring. It had called to her, though. It had chosen her and she'd liked that. "Hm?" She looked back up at Mark and shrugged. "I feel fine. No overwhelming urges to murder or rule."

"Oh. That." She wasn't sure how to word it. "It, uh, wanted to know what, um, Big-Carl knows -err, is after. Information about him and the legacies."

Sherry wondered if the gold legacy already knew... or if she'd just confirmed something for it. "It didn't' seem like a bad legacy. Until..." She glanced at the walls before pulling the ring off again. "I wonder if there's anything left in it."

And that comment was the last straw on the camel's back. "Okay look," Mark pointed to himself, " Okay, so imagine you're uh, you're Bilbo, and I'm Gandalf, and I'm like give me the ring Bilbo, for your own good and stuff. And you're like no it's my ring the ring is for me but then you start to hear whispers and it's really evil and actually belongs to Sauron." There probably was a point to this rant somewhere. "What I'm trying to say, Bilbo, that's you by the way, is for the love of Frodo Baggins, just give me the ring to at least look at so I know it's not going to turn you into a crazy flesheating zombie or something."

A pause. "Which has happened by the way, but don't worry, I have a vaccine that like, mostly works."
