Gale managed to shoot another creeping tendril up, and Sam, instead of making any leeway, just fired a few rounds into the same area, probably out of spite from being touched.

"Yeah don't tell anyone about how much I work out." he grimaced as he said that, pretty much indicating that he didn't work out much at all. "Besides I'm more suited for my charms and intellect you know?"

This guy had been hanging out too much with Mark, and nearly missed getting tangled in a mess of rotating vines, backing up and wiping the sweat off his forehead. "Any good plans?"

"I won't say anything if you won't," Gale said through gritted teeth, redirecting his gun to aim at another cluster of vines. "As for any plans - where the hell did Caelius go? We can't keep fighting like this, we're going to be overrun in seconds."

He kicked out, trying to force his way through.

"Why don't you ask him," Sam yelled, suddenly doing everything in his power to run away instead of attack. Before Gale could ask what on earth Samuel was doing-

- There was a sharp, familiar hum of a very familiar weapon and then a clash of green, vines and Gale flying all directions-

- Gale managed to hit the side railing, cushioned by a few meatier pieces of foliage, that began to wrap around his waist before withering again. If he looked out of the corner of his eye, he could see the Death lead patiently waiting for the elevator to open.

"Nailed it," whispered Sam, who had suffered no collateral. He offered Gale his hand. "Some pretty cool gunwork by the way - you sure you're in the right division?" That was probably a joke.

"Oh, for the love of - "

He had lost count by now of how many times he had been flung in the air - or thrown in the air - or ejected out of a window - or just knocked around by the Death Lead, so it should not, in all reality, have come as a surprise when the next second Gale found himself airborne.

He landed with a crash that reverberated throughout his bones, kicking automatically at the foliage, yanking at the vines, but they had already withered. Gale scrabbled to his feet, grasping at Samuel's hand, and pulled himself vertical, giving the other hunter a slightly exasperated look.

"I ask myself that all the time," he muttered. "Where are we going now? Out?"

"Out," confirmed Samuel, rubbing the portion of his neck where his tattoo was for a second. It seemed Caelius had very quickly run out of "patience", and Sam looked like he was bout to have an aneurysm as he chased after the closing elevator doors and managed to pry them open for himself and Gale again.

More elevator music as they went up.

"Cry me a river," sang Gale's new buddy, and then stopped when his lead gave him a sharp look. "Hey now, some classic Justin Timberlake, who could resist?" He nudged Gale. "Now's the time to say something witty and interesting."

Gale's eyes went briefly to the O tattoo, instinctively running fingers over a very similar tattoo unseen on the inside of his wrist. He climbed into the elevator after Samuel, though he steered as far clear from Caelius as he could.

There was really no telling what the other would do, after all. Gale shot Samuel a look.

"Is there anything else I should know about what we're doing here?" he asked instead of something witty and interesting, mostly because he couldn't think of anything.

"Beats me, anything else we should know about what we're doing here Cae- Sir?"

Silence.

More classic Justin Timberlake music.

"What's blue and not very heavy?" Samuel tried instead to fill the increasingly tense silence. "Light blue."

More silence.

"Why did the blind guy fall into the well? Because-"

- The elevator suddenly stopped. It was pitch black, and there was a strange creaking noise and then a loud snap, as if someone was disconnecting the elevator cords.

Immediately after the noise, the construction suddenly lurched left, tilting everyone heavily to one side and then again and without warning Gale was falling and everything was creaking and groaning, the sensation of dropping going for what felt like forever-

- Until he finally fell in the sands next to the lighthouse, and so did Samuel, and so did his lead actually on his feet.

"Why did you do that before we got into the elevator," Sam shouted angrily, watching as Caelius went back into the lighthouse portals without so much as a warning. He shrugged. "It's cool just nearly fell three hundred floors- wait a second where did Mark go?"

Gale, in the process of dragging a hand down his face at Samuel's words (which, combined with the twinkling, ridiculous sort of music, made everything feel that much stranger) - when the elevator stopped.

The blackness was all encompassing; Gale shifted half a step and felt the entire thing start to collapse, and then they were falling, and he thought he might be yelling, except he couldn't hear himself over the screech of metal and the groaning of the elevator -

- and then, they were out.

Gale staggered, lost his balance, and fell unceremoniously onto his backside on the ground. He scrambled to his feet again, swaying, eyes wide as he stared at the lighthouse, his heartbeat erratic in his chest, head whipping around.

"What the bloody hell just happened? Where did both of them just go?"

Immediately Samuel went for his phone, expression hyper-focused for a second as he started texting.

Two seconds later there was a ping as a text was sent back, and then a second, and then a third, and fourth.

"Good news, Mark's still alive," he rolled his eyes, "you got all your ah, limbs and everything still in one piece, Watson?"

Gale's eyes were still focused on Samuel, widened with a mixture of confusion, annoyance, and utter exasperation all rolled into one.

"Yes..." he said, after a long moment. Then he added, "Are you sure that's good news?"

Samuel just paused for a second, and then good naturedly punched Gale's shoulder - very lightly. "Get out of here, hot shot. You're going to make me look bad. " A pause. "You're free, kid. Make the best of your day. I mean, when I was twenty-one I-"

- It was just a brief moment but his expression just halted, as if turning off a machine, and then he was beaming again at Gale without saying much else. "You're a good person, Gale. Let's do this again sometime, and next time I'll rescue your a**."

Gale appreciated the light punching, less so the kid comment, but he let it slide. This time, especially since so far Samuel was one of the only people to actually acknowledge the fact that he was twenty-one, not sixteen anymore.

The pause, the halt - whatever it was - made Gale frown, expression flickering. He opened his mouth to say something, and then slowly shut it, because maybe he had imagined it.

Maybe. He gave a nod.

"Yeah, sure," he said, "Thanks for keeping an eye out for me."

Sam turned and waved to Gale while walking off, ending their conversation with a very familiar thumbs up.
