"During and after and frequently on your lap, sir." Misha refrained from laughing out loud but the joy and amusement was clear in her light eyes. "You pet me an awful lot. It was niiiiice."

"Well, what can I say? I have a very comfy lap." He reached up to pet Misha now, but stopped short. Her hair was probably more carefully done than he realized, and he didn't want to muss it up on her. "Well anyway," he said with a little laugh, "I still could."
His hand dropped to his side and, for some reason, reality decided to reel back and punch him in the gut again. There was no real rhyme or reason to it, but his smile faltered just slightly and he shoved his hands into his pockets as they walked.

His sudden and noticeable retreat caused Misha to bite down hard on her lip. Something was still clearly bothering him and she felt sure it was the manner of him leaving the force. She could not imagine Brian ever being fired in his life - not even from a paper route. She watched the path ahead of them as they walked in silence and the moments lengthened into minutes. It did not feel uncomfortable, per se. Silence with Brian almost never did. However, this felt weighty and pending and pregnant with something else. Finally, she reached out to slip her arm through his and, despite their continued pace, managed to tip her head to rest on his shoulder. "Brian?" she began gently. "You'll be fine. What happened doesn't mean anything about how good you are. If anything, it just says what a lousy manager Zeus is. Seriously. The guy has no forethought. Then again, what can you expect from a guy who sleeps with swans and cows and things."

Brian didn't like the silence, but once it had gone on for long enough he wasn't sure how to fill it. Luckily, Misha seemed to have the right idea.
"No, no, I know." That's what he kept telling himself, anyway. He'd never so much as gotten a detention, let alone been fired from a job! He had already put in his two weeks' notice and grieved over the loss of the position, so it wasn't so much that as the fact that he had been terminated. He could only imagine the rumors circulating through the station. What had finally done Watterly in?
"Wasn't he the swan? And the cow?" he asked, trying to change the subject. "It's not his fault if the man likes it freaky."

"No but he really should ask first." Misha stuck out her tongue at him. "But I guess there weren't really consent laws back then." She bumped her hip into his and, her hips being her hips, she actually managed to send him off-balance. "But do you know-know?" She clearly was not about to let him off that easily.

Well, that had gone from teasing to rape pretty quickly. Brian cleared his throat awkwardly as his smile turned odd. Apparently nothing could go well today. It was a wonderful change of pace when Misha hi-checked him and he did stumble to the side and let out a little laugh.
"Know what?"

"That you're awesome and capable and you losing your job had nothing to do with you and everything to do with this." She lifted a hand to motion in a vague sort of way, indicating the Prytaneum campus and their new lives. "Do you know that?"

"Whuh--? Yeah. Of course." It didn't make it much easier to accept, but he absolutely knew that this wasn't a reflection on his character. Unfortunately, many people would see it that way. He'd already been approached twice about what had gone on at the station, and then he'd just silenced his phone. His reputation was marred and he couldn't explain it away. Even "I'm going to school" wasn't a good enough excuse for a termination, let alone the week he'd been missing. It sucked. If this all ended tomorrow, what would he do? He wasn't exactly a man built to survive on faith, but that was precisely what they were all doing.

She let his words sit for a while and just focused on matching her steps to his so that she could continue to snuggle into his side. Her mind worked furiously. Brian was upset. This was clear. It was also not something she had experienced yet with him, not in this particular capacity and definition of upset, anyway. She licked her lips in absent reaction to thought. "Brian?" She paused for an instant and then rushed ahead. Misha had long since learned to trust her instinct with people and hoped it would hold true. "I know we haven't known each other very long but I like to think we're close and you might not be into talking about touchy things normally but, if you ever feel like it, I hope you know I'm all ears for you. I am not piling it on to get snuggles when I say you're great."

His brows furrowed.
"If course, I know that." His expression softened. Poor Misha. What did she think he was? She must have known some shitty people in the past, or else she was especially worried about him personally.
"That wouldn't be like you," he said. He reached out to take Misha's hand again. The contact was comforting, whether she realized it or not. "I'm gonna be fine. Let's talk about something else. How are your parents?"

As much as she wanted to argue that she would not change the subject, she gave in with a sigh and a comical eye-roll to his new question. "Worried sick about me being so far away and doing who knows what," she admitted. "I don't think they quite believe my reasons for being in Michigan. Not that I blame them. It sounds pretty flimsy. Actor internship and classes. At least they know I'm alive since I call once or twice a week. Usually." She grimaced. The bayou thing had been different, of course. That had been a long conversation. "I think my mom has it in her head that this all involves a guy somehow, too."

"Well it does involve a guy," Brian said, and then straightened his back and puffed out his chest. Yes, a guy! Him! "I mean, you didn't move all the way out here for me, but a guy can flatter himself, right?"
Clearly Brian was delighted to not have to talk about work. It showed in his expression and in his voice, but his eyes still weren't just right.

Misha laughed and poked a finger into his side. "Careful, Handsome, or you'll be my scapegoat if the situation gets dire," she warned. Then she shifted abruptly to pull his arm around her shoulders as they walked, hips brushing, her fingers tangled in his hand which now dangled. "And then you'll be in trouble because she will, without any doubt, adore you and feed you and hint about what ring size I wear."

"There are worse things," Brian said with a shrug. he smiled down at Misha as she shifted their positions, and he happily fell into his new one. "Well, I'm a very agreeable young man!" He talked with his free hand as he teased. "Girls love to bring me home to Mom, and not much else." He laughed and hip-checked Misha.
"My mom would love you. My sister even more, though, I think." His girls would try and cajole him into asking her out for sure.

"Silly. You are more than agreeable but are you really going to make me list all of your good qualities again?" She grinned sideways at him. "So I could charm your mom and both sisters, huh? What about your dad? How hard would I have to work to get his blessing to corrupt you utterly?"
