Oracle Exi

"They are arent they"" Oracle Exi said and then smiled "From the description its given me before it is rather unique" Exi said "Each stone has a soul within it, each soul a story, and they are the direct messengers to the gods. Unlike the oracles that can only relay what the gods wish us to speak the blue whispers have unbridled access to the minds and tongues of the gods, the only problem however is that some of them never shut up about themselves or the gods. They keep talking and talking." he said "This creature is no longer walks our land, it was one of the inferior creatures that were bred out of society because despite the immense energy and magic they held they gave no other traits to survival and the instincts that would have been bred in would have been more trouble then they were worth" he said "These things once stole unattended children and left their own. They could only be killed with silver, like this one here. She was bound in silver chains and sunk to the bottom of the river for kidnapping children."

Oracle Exi nodded at his wrist were the crystal remained "Only being able to see the threads of fate and the souls in the crystals wont be much use to you so I would suggest learning how to read lips if you want to actually speak with them. Not all of them are wicked either mind you and they tend to be full of history." he paused "Now if you want to stop seeing them all you have to do is bring light back into your focus so that it is not just the crystal you see any more."

Gone's the wisdom
Of a thousand years
A world in fire and chains and fear

If whispers no longer walked the world, then no wonder they were so hard to find and were so scarce. They talked, it seemed, but by the way the oracle talked, the oracle didn't have the eyes to see. Or was it that the whisper was taking the form of the creature that was extinct? That was a little tricky.

How to read lips? The dragon smiled slightly. The oracle didn't know this dragon's business, did he?

He focused his attention on the creature's lips and looked forward to translating at least a part of what this creature chose to say. Fortunately, if and when he was ready to return to the present, it was as simple as distancing his attention.

"Then, they can hear me."

Oracle Exi

"They hear everything and most of the time they enjoy laughing at our barbarism compared to what they consider to be a much more advanced culture. Yet any time one asks how they became extinct they simply shut up and ignore you" Oracle Exi said and the strange little soul that had come from the crystal began to float again, it turned to look at Exi with its hands on its small hips and started speaking rapidly, something that wouldn't be readable which only made the Oracle chuckle under his breath.

The mischievous little soul would then look over at Xersies and put its hands upon its knees as if it was getting reading to talk to a child, or a lesser life form. It would slowly start to mouth the words "Hello - My Little - Crystalphiliac" the tiny soul grinned "If only you - had been born - three years earlier - then you were. You would have been an oracle - and we could have - met much sooner."

They enjoyed laughter. Well, at least they could keep their humor despite having been removed from life. Perhaps, then, the afterlife wasn't as terrible and horrible as one could be led to believe.

He wouldn't pretend that he aspired to be trapped to a crystal, however. When the being turned to face him, Xerseis took note of the pose, and also noticed the condescension in the expression and with the words that the little one chose to use. For whatever reason, the little one had chosen the common dialect. Perhaps, then, the dead could learn.

Intriguing thoughts.

Xerseis chose not to take offense, and instead smiled with his own amusement as he continued to study the creature and what he saw form on the lips.

Curious, Xerseis allowed his mouth to move, and chose not to voice what he was wishing to relay to the whisper. Did you... wish to meet.... me.... that much?

If he was treated as a child, then he could play like a child. How far did this whisper's patience extend. The whisper could hear, this was clear enough, and it seemed to move as though it could also see... it begged the question, though, of how quickly it could become riled or angry.

I would make a poor oracle.

The tiny soul shook its head "No. I just - thought it would- be interesting - to see how highly - you thought of - yourself." the tiny soul would tap its feet together as it flew up a few feet and went over to him. The fine details of her face coming out, particularly her eyes. They were tricolored and ringed with the inner most ring being magenta, the second ring being orchid, and the outer most ring being abyssal black, her gossamer wings fluttered as she stared at him "My cousins would - have loved to kidnap - you and make you - their pretty play thing - you look almost - like them - with your pale features." she purred out as she started to twirl around him "You'd have made - a great oracle - after all - you would have known - nothing else- so how would you have - made a poor one?"

An amusing little creature, if strange and cryptic. It seemed to think he was pretty, and he could only guess that this little wisp was female. He didn't feel it proper to broach that door as neither of them had bothered with titles. As it was, she seemed to already know enough about him not to warrant an introduction. Rather faelike in its appearance, and its eyes uncannily strange, but nevertheless, it seemed very happy to use its wings, despite there probably no need for it if the whisper didn't have a corporeal form.

"I look like your cousins...? Or others?" He decided to speak and vocalize his words, as it was easier for him not to think about. He followed her with his eyes, curious about what she saw. "I disagree. Just because something is all a person knows does not guarantee that they would do well. One who dances very ill, always praised, may never consider consider that their talent lies elsewhere."

And he was ever fortunate that he knew more than his little sphere. A person can be terrible at anything, especially if they don't know any better, and almost definitely if they are never corrected by experience or their fellows. How cruel indeed, to never be told when one is wrong. How sad, then, when such a one chooses not to listen.

Xerseis, at least for his part, felt that much of his learning came from being exposed to the world, its facets, its rich and poor, it's haughty and humble, and the corrections that came from his teachers, kindred, and all others who he came to know. Such knowledge he could never gain from a box. He might have been an oracle, if the timing was different, but as it was, the stars, and his parents, had deemed otherwise. He hatched on a different year.

The tiny soul snickered, it wouldn't be heard but the way its face contorted and its mouth became wide in order to show off its tiny sharp teeth more akin to those you would find inside a fishes maw rather then a humans and how it pulled her pointy ears forward. It was clear that she had laughed "oh yes. - " she went into a pause as she looked up at him, she flew around him again, the blue that was her being leaving a small trace of light before she circled back to were she had once stood, her hands now behind her back " with a few - differences of course. - they had ears more - like mine. But they were - big like you. Most had white - hair, or golden. Some looked like - they could be the very definition of - Ethereal. They held far more beauty - then anyone alive now. They - were natures children. Though nature was far crueler - to them then it was to your kind back -then." a pause that was followed by a wicked smile full of mischief. "Nature let them keep the beauty - but made the men die out - made the women kill them if they were ever born again. - Made them to interested in breeding to maintain any coherent thoughts. - Only two managed to break away. The power and suffering they had - and forced into the blood of those they bred with" the way the creature tilted her head to one side to let her long crimped hair fall to her side showed that she was only telling him little pieces and not giving him any full information.

The Small creature would fly back over to her crystal and sit down upon it "You see. Problem with what you say - is that you are giving them the choice to do - anything else. They will become good at - what they must do. If they must dance - and they must dance well to please the gods. - They will learn to dance as the gods - or those that relay the words - of the gods say they must. - They will keep dancing until - they are told to stop." the creatures ringed eyes widened and she flashed her pointy little teeth "You would be a very good oracle - because you would dance until - your wings changed from scale to feather - and your insides from bone to tar - if that is what the gods said would make you a good oracle. Because- That is what your society demands of you. That is what - you will do until your death - Even in your next life - if you get one - you will dance as you are told. A good oracle - is a good oracle. Those that are not. Do not last long."

The Oracle sighed, seeming to slowly become uncomfortable with the conversation that he was hearing perfectly without any constraints as the little soul smiled up at Xerseis "your people think you are so new and that your kingdoms - are so grand. Yet you dragons keep forgetting - that though this 'empire'" the little creature put her tiny fingers up to put up small air quotes around the word "has always been ruled by - a dragon. That your real place - was never in the skies. You are all - so very stupid."

Xerseis seemed to listen patiently while the little creature saw fit to speak so much and to share so much information, yet seeming to hide much, as any with nothing to lose might choose to do. The crystalline dragon was content to listen, but like most who sifted through rumor and word to find truth, he took what he observed with a grain of salt.

Whatever the truth was, the little creature before him was dead, and this he knew. Whatever the truth of his ancestors might have been, Xerseis knew that the creature took delight in hearing itself speak. It suggested that a person, literally knowing no different, would become good out of necessity. Xerseis' personal experience was that out of each race, there were savants, geniuses, idiots, and fools. Some by choice and some by construction. A fool might convince himself to be good or compelled to be so, but having no other wisdom, his experience, his ability to do more, was limited indeed.

Remove an oracle from their protected tower, remove their ability to speak with the gods, remove from them that which makes them special, and what is left of them?

Very little that would lend them to worth in common society, save their own self-importance. And that, in and of itself, was the most dangerous thing of all when dealing with other people.

Their own self-interests easily consumed a people who were not intent on preparing a future for others.

Xerseis, when the wisp had said what it wished, allowed himself to smile, and to chuckle in amusement.

The dragon's place was never the skies, hm? Then why, oh why, did they have wings? Why were they protected from the higher atmosphere's chill? Why had they adapted to move and to carry their armor always upon them? Indeed.

"Then, according to your wisdom, one that glows blue before my gaze... to whom does the sky belong?"

The Creatures eyes glittered as if it had heard something that none other could hear and she grinned again and giggled soundlessly "You have wings." she paused "Because... you may only think it myth by now, the dragons came long ago from out of caves and thus they met the phoenix" a pause to let him ponder "Imagine how big those caves must have been and where they must have gone to in order for you to need wings."

The creature then shrugged at his question "I have no given answer on that, Their is one that does but they do not give answers without taking a price for it. As far as an answer I can give you. The sky is not magic." a long pause "Why do you think the very core of your existence... as if it was engrained...no. Bred into your very existence 'do not leave this land." she asked him, raising both her eyebrows "To the beyond Ethe, Phobos and Bellris all you see is open sky, you see no land beyond them. To Zalto you come to a desert that you seem to never be able to cross and a body of water that is the same. Yet no one wonders... is their any land beyond this one that we were born onto" her eyes flashed as if suddenly filled with both a curiosity and a cruelty no living being would ever accomplish "Because it is your magic that tells you 'do not'. As a being of pure magic myself, I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that not a single blue whisper exists beyond this land. What does that tell you about whom the sky belongs when so much of it exists all around you but you can never fly into it?"

Indeed, none could claim it. Or rather.... none yet had claim to it. Dragons and phoenix alike chose their nesting grounds and there they stayed. It was safer, it was more comfortable to be near kin and to stay to the lands one knows best. Few knew the lands beneath the earth better than the house Xerseis, who did not craft their lands on the ground, but in the layers that held it upright.

Ah, but why interrupt the conversation with these details? The crystal dragon found more thoughts, and more interesting besides, in what the blue whisper had mentioned.

None yet tried to explore.... But there was a hint that more existed beyond the shores and deserts.

The dragon's smile widened and his golden eyes seemed to come alight with intrigue. He managed to collect himself, however, and not spill his thoughts.

"Interesting philosophy indeed, if limited. I am grateful for your insight, little whisper."

The Creature tilted its head "Not a philosophy. You and your ilk fight over a third of the land that once was. The greater kingdoms better then this have all been left to crumble into the nothingness as magic concentrates closer and closer to the center"

the creature yawned "If you have no questions however, I think I will retire." she said "If you like, I can find your original soul. Would you like to see how far you have come since the times of old ."

Original soul?

Now this was an intriguing question, and Xerseis at first, had no answer prepared for such an offer. It seemed freely given, and the curious little one spoke of it so calmly that there seemed no hint of guile in the words.

Xerseis was not too surprised about there being kingdoms before this one, as ruins that had little history or story behind them suggested such things, yet again came the talk of magic.... It was concentrating somewhere.

"I should be delighted to see it, if it can be found." Xerseis honestly answered. He found himself very curious, if but because this was information he doubted he could receive elsewhere.

Were all blue whispers so strange, or was it merely this one that was so willing to speak?

"The first you made quite the splash in the pond" the soul mouthed the words to his deaf ears as she floated around on her back "Beautiful and cold...you looked just like them, but a darker version of them... They would have called you tainted and unclean despite being neither." she would whisper to him "a one horned creature that could hide his demonic likeness and change his feathers from black to white in an instant. A beautiful creature that ended it all at long last" the creature grinned at him "When the Icy Mistress finally met her end. It was the whispers of a strange creature that kept its horns hidden and changed its feathers that whispered into the ears of even those that had once been her most devote followers" the creature made a fist "but your first soul wouldn't be able to completely outwit her. One night on blood soaked satin blankets she would squeeze" the creature flew right over to him and put her hands on his neck, but he would feel nothing "And squeeze until the beautiful one that had tricked her, pretended to be pure as all those with white feathers that followed her believed them to be. She would take the air from your lungs and fill them instead with ice and with her magic she would find you and wear you as a piece of jewelry until the day came that your whispers finally took her" the creature would move back "Buried alive by her own followers because of your whispers. Your first soul ended a war that would have destroyed all those that wearn't decorated with the beautiful of pale feathers." the creature tilted her head "do you want to know where your first you was buried? still around the neck of the woman that had wanted every last one of your people impaled and hoisted up upon staves'?"

Splash in the pond? Who used watery metaphors these days?

.... Apparently the blue whisper did.

Xerseis struggled to picture the one that the whisper was describing to him. She called this first one... as though they were himself. A horned creature that could hide. Change his feathers... feathers...... How far back was this little one talking? He was fairly certain all of his line were dragons.... ah... well.... perhaps in one instance, this might have been true, but he was less certain that his soul followed the path that his blood took.

This trickster was destroyed by an icy mistress.... but who did such a one describe?

.... Perhaps he could get more specific answers for himself.... from himself, as it were.

The real question, then, was whether or not he was willing to be a grave robber for such information.

..... Considering the bloody history that he was listening to, he was willing to say yes. Everyone has a price, and he had the resources to do many things. A little bit of digging to retrieve an old family artifact usually was seen skeptically, but forgiven if it paid well.

"I would be honored, wise one."

The creature grinned and then simply said
"You remember the place you stuck your tongue down the Empresses throat?"
the creature was suddenly acting amused at its own words
"A stone coffin will be found at the very back of the ruins."
another pause
"But I wouldn't take the Empress back their if I were you. She can hear the cluster like a whisper on the wind, and she will tell you not to open the coffin and tell you that things from the past should remain buried"
