it's for youThe wild thudding of Jamie's heart was beginning to subside. It was easier to cling to the kindness in Hyejin's voice than to try and dispel the nervousness all on his own. It was working, slowly but surely.
Shielding his mouth, voice dropping to an almost-whisper, he side-eyed Chris and told her, "H-He's still kinda awkward, too." Quickly glancing away, he tried to pretend like he hadn't just fired shots when he was literally standing right there. "Not that, um, I can really say anything. I am, too. A-A-And boring. Maybe that's why we get along." There was a humor in his voice now.

it's for you
Chris moved away, leaving Jamie to the phone call and to make himself tea. It, granted, wasn't incredibly far away since it was a small apartment and his kitchen was close to the front door but it was some distance of privacy.
"Of course he is," She said with amusement, glad he was playing along with her. "He's a teacher, I don't think he does normal social interaction anymore really. He's always in his apartment or he's gardening. It's nice knowing you visit and stick around, I can't imagine his merits."
There was a pause, and then gently teasing, she asked, "It's totally for Bergamot isn't it? I've seen his cat, he's the cutest."

it's for you"I think I insulted him... he walked away." Jamie told this to Hyejin with a dumb sort of smile. She couldn't see it, but she might be able to hear it in his voice. "I mean... I can't really lie, I'm not very good at this kinda thing either. Social interaction... that stuff. Chris was, um, one of the first people who let me just... t-talk about the things I liked."
It had meant so much to Jamie, a chance to tell someone about himself, to open up and think for once he'd found a person who cared enough to listen. That was why he was quick to shush her, fighting back a laugh as he did so.
"That's why you can't tell him I'm only here for Bergie. I don't want him to get mad."

it's for you
"If you did, good," Hyejin said, "Don't let his ego get too big." She hums for a second, then says, "He likes to listen and I'm sure you have interesting things to say. As long as you're confident, I'm sure you'll find more people to talk to. I mean, I'm talking to you now aren't you?"
Hyejin giggled, clearly amused. She enjoyed talking to Jamie.
"I won't, I won't. After all, someone needs to come around and make sure he isn't dead, or at least if he is to take Bergie. I'm sure he's in good hands, especially if he likes you."

it's for you"I hope you're right..." trailing off, he let a short silence fall between them before continuing. It was still lighthearted, but there was obvious doubt in Jamie's voice. "I don't think I'm, um, very interesting. B-But I really want more friends. I wanna try..."
Shuffling a bit, he finally opted to sit down to keep himself from fidgeting. "I... was actually kinda scared to talk to you, but I'm glad I did." Squeezing the book he'd brought tighter against his frame, he huffed.
"Chris isn't allowed to die, but I'd take Bergie in a heartbeat. I haven't seen him since I got here, though."

it's for you
"There's no way there's not something interesting about you," Hyejin said, "Unless you sit in like a blank white room all day and only drink water and eat crackers or something. What do you like to do in your free time?"
Chris was still in the kitchen, making tea, but also trying very hard to stay out of the conversation. He didn't want to make Jamie have any more awkward of a time than he was having, although it was looking fine so far which shocked him.
"Scared? Why? Was it something Chris said? He's the worst sibling, I swear."
Hyejin hummed for a second, then said, "Check the plants, Chris has been complaining about him being in there. Either the plants or the bathroom sink. He's weird and likes it too."

it's for you"Oh, n-no!" Jamie was quick in his attempt to quell her concerns over what amounted to Chris's familial betrayal. The very next instant he could feel fire under his skin from his cheeks to his ears when he realized she was probably still fooling around. It had been an automatic response. The last thing Jamie wanted to do was ruin someone else's relationship.
"U-Um, I mean... Chris never... he never said anything bad. I just get nervous when I talk to new people."
Sighing softly, exasperatedly, he set the book down on the table and stood to check through the plants again. Maybe he'd find Bergie this time. Jamie had sat to keep himself from fidgeting, but now just needed to do something to calm his nerves.
"I, um, well..." he thought for a moment, trying to relax enough to think of a decent answer to her previous questions. "I like to play video games and, um, go to the park?" It sounded like a question as he finally started to even out again. "Oh-! Also I have a lot of fish. I love them. AAAAnd... I like to hang out with my friend, Shiloh."
Did all of those things make him sound interesting enough?

it's for you
"Oh," Hyejin said softly, "I understand." She was outgoing, but Jamie's trouble wasn't something she was unfamiliar with. Chris used to be slightly shy, but he'd grown out of it.
Bergie, fortunately for Jamie, was hanging out in the biggest pot Chris had, carefully hidden by the green. He yawned and blinked up at Jamie, giving him a purr. Jamie was the best.
"Fish? Do you like, take care of them? I grew up on an island so I only kinda know about the ocean," She said, rather interested. "Also that's plenty of things about you! Oh wait, who is Shiloh? Does Chris know him too? I feel like he's mentioned him before."

it's for youAh! Thankfully he'd found Bergie, warm and noodly from sleep, and quickly claimed him, pulling him to his chest with his phone tucked between his ear and shoulder. Showering him with way too much affection was the perfect distraction from his own restlessness. Sure, Jamie loved fish, but Jamie loved this precious, precocious kitten just as much.
"I take care of them, yeah," he finally said, readjusted, "I have a lot... I love them." And then he laughed again, some of the tension melting away. "Shiloh was one of Chris's students, too. He's my best friend."
