In no time, Melvin was back holding him, hoisting the man up higher than before so he could be even further up from the surface and leaning more against his chest and shoulders. The claw was dangerous, and he winced at it lashed out into his shield as Lawr flailed to get to the surface.

"Still here." He called out, keeping him held up as he sank a bit more, but looked up above the water to Lawr, letting him take the time to notice he wasn't sinking anymore.

This was a problem through. Lawr was in no way able to swim on his own, and with so many missions in and around water, not to mention they were on a island, it wasn't a good thing to have him such a violent reaction to just being around it. Looking at it now, remembering the mission with Harrison, it was all starting to point that Lawr never wanted to be around any water that could possibly go over his head.

"I'm here, Lawr. I've got you."

This time Lawrence didn't calm down, there was no point where he relaxed against Melvin or trusted him to hold him, there was only the abject panic that Melvin himself was just as dangerous and maybe more dangerous even than the water itself. He had to look after himself and that was all there was to it.

"I need to get out." he said when he stopped coughing and spluttering from the water he'd inhaled with that oddly calm tone in direct conflict to everything else. "You haven't got me." he hissed, not any more, he thought.

He all but climbed up Melvin like a cat and leapt away from him with all his strength, if he was successful striking out towards the shallows and shore and of course going right back under due to the weight of the gauntlets. It was only this time that he seemed to remember to desummon them and resurfaced, swimming quickly to a point where he could stand and trying to climb up out of the water next to the steep bank.

The force through him under, and he bobbed back up when he felt Lawr was gone again, Turning quick, he moved after him to see Lawr sink back down, before before he could get him, Lawr was back up, pushing through the water as he rushed up to the short.

Following him, he swam before him and reached out for his arm. "Lawr!" He shouted, trying to get his attention.

Lawrence's first reaction at the contact on his arm was to flinch away from it, turning to face Melvin with an utterly cold and blank expression, staring in the way he usually only did when he was irritated.

"What?" he snapped, moving away from the other man to maintain distance as he continued to almost frantically scan the river banks for a way out and away from this vulnerable situation.

The scanning search for escape was one Melvin saw when Jan...or was it Lawr at that time, wanted out of the lighthouse. A time when he wanted something else.

He didn't want him to run. He didn't want him to run away again unless it was for fun like before. Not like this.

He couldn't let him run.

So he moved quick to grab him into his arms.

Being grabbed immediately made him think that he was going to be dragged back out into the water and he saw now that Melvin did not understand the gravity of the danger that involved for him. "Let me go!" he said, trying to wriggle free of the other man's grip. "I am NOT doing any more swimming today!"

He held firm, bending his head down to protect his face as Lawr lashed out and twisted to get out of his arms.

"You don't have to, just don't run!"

Don't leave.

Saliva coiled around his mind.

...

Finally he gave up struggling, exhaling heavily and going limp in the other man's arms.

"Just get me out of here."

He didn't trust him, but right now there weren't any other options.

He held him still, but did not move. There was a sort of security in being near water, being this close to keeping him here like this for now. Land meant Lawr could run.

Loosing his grip just barely, he looked up at him. "I had you. I wasn't going to let you drown."

"You let me go." he said icily.

He shook his head. "I had you."

"I specifically asked you not to let go of me." he said, "I didn't want to go through that again, I dislike it, it is distressing and I stupidly trusted you at your word. You did not have me and you most certainly no longer have me."

He had to reign back the desire to attack the other man for what he'd done to him and to get away, instead whittling the urges back to simply a cold glare. "It wasn't about letting me drown, it was considerably more than that, but I won't make the mistake again, so don't worry about it."

"I only wanted to see if you could swim. I wanted to see if you could stay afloat. I wasn't going to let you drown. I wasn't going to let you go forever. I wasn't abandoning you." He said, explaining his intentions, but the last words chilled him.

".....What do you mean? What was it then?" He said back, his voice settling down now to something more quiet and less frantic.

He still held on, did not move a inch from the spot.

"You could have asked me those things." Lawrence said and wouldn't even look at him while he said it, still staring at the bank of the river as if seeking an escape route. "You could have asked me and I could have told you without having to think I was going to die." It was the first time in a while that he genuinely and earnestly wanted to harm someone, to pin them down and see if they were really so stupid and ignorant under their skin as they seemed to be on the surface.

"But you chose the latter. That is about all that I need to know. I suppose we both learned things today. Can we go back now?"

He did not move.

"You said you weren't sure. I thought it would be fine for us to see. I'm sorry for thinking that. So what did you learn from that then? That I'm going to ignore everything you say - for what? What is your big lesson about me then?"

He looked up still. "You thought I was going to let you die. All this time I've protected you, and you thought I'd just let that happen. Just here. In some river a few feet deep?" He turned to the river.

"Do you think that now? That I'll just be rid of you that way?"

He looked on to the water in front of him and up to Lawr again. "I dove into this river wanting to help you. Why didn't I let you drown then?"
