He smiled as he breathed out in relief. "I try." He gave him a kiss back.
And he released him. "Are you okay?"

He should have dropped it, but he felt if he did, Jan wouldn't trust him to say any more. To say anything he didn't already know about him.
When he came back up, he waited and slowly eased back into the water. "Jan, I want to know more about you. This too. I just don't know about dressing up as a woman. But I don't want to make you angry either. I just want to talk."
He swam in place. "If that's the new life you want, then it's the right one."

As Melvin let Lawr go he hit the floor in a pile of claws. One reached up to take Melvin's hand
"Carry me to the bathroom."

Lawrence set his mouth in a thin displeased line. "I'm on holiday, I don't want to talk about things which are obviously uncomfortable to you. I'll discuss it later. Right now it is suffice to say I dress up as people, one of those people was Chantelle, the present Chantelle is not me, I like to be other people."
He relaxed again with a sigh. "But let's deal with happier things right?"

"What? No. No. You can't just say that and drop it. Jan, you were Chantelle and now - how? How were you her and not her? I mean she - how did you even pull that off she looks so different and - how is she not now?"
Chantelle was his blood relative. Jan had said that. But what did that make her now? Did he lie to him? They had been in the same room with her. How did Chantelle not know - or did she know.
Wait, what about that stuff on Twitter??!
How could he have been her and not been her. And if he had been Chantelle, - that was some level of impressive he couldn't even wrap his head around right now due to how different they looked.

Taking his hand, he placed his other on Jan's back to support him and helped him up and towards the bathroom, nudging the door. The lights flickered on as he brought him in.

Indignity
It hadn't been fun and he hadn't been alone, neither were comforting.
Melvin found himself fiercely clung to with Lawrence's good hand as they left the bathroom. He knew better than to drink, especially when it was always on an empty stomach these days but it didn't matter.
"Getting old." he said, hanging his whole sad weight on the other man.

His frustration was building the more he was asked. "You are asking me dangerous questions Melvin. I was her. I was entirely her, she's not related to me, she IS me. Some other part of me. Then I maimed Horace, then I was in a golem OF her while I was podded. I can't be anyone but THEM when I'm dressed as them. She is a golem. If anyone knows she is and shows it openly H said he'd take /Jan/. So just a warning not to ask too many questions about that little thing."
He pointed at Melvin. "She looked different because I am damn good at what I do."

Something tilted and he felt himself dip into the water before kicking out to keep himself afloat. Swimming felt a little too much and he moved slowly to the side. Jan had been Chantelle. Chantelle didn't exist as a person. She was a golem. A golem of Jan? As a Lifer, his mind instantly wanted to figure out how a golem could exist as someone who had been that person while still being that person. A mind copy? Then he was quickly reminded just what was going on and drove his thoughts back.
And Dr. H knew?
It was a lot to know when he had been lead to believe a lot differently. But that was when Jan was with Horace. That was before, wasn't it? He didn't know Jan then.
Did he know Jan now?
While Jan seemed awfully proud of his skills and abilities, Melvin only felt somehow cold in the warm Dubai sun and pristine water.
But, he had to ask something.
"Where you...anyone else on the island?" Was he - Mikael?Even after Jan just told him that story. Did he lie to him on that?
"Is there anything else that might kill you?"

He lead Jan out, leading him to the plush bed and setting him down. "You're not old. You just had too much to drink. Frat boys do the same thing." He said, moving away to go get him one of the bottled waters from the fridge before returning back.
Sitting beside him, he twisted off the top and handed it to him. "I should have listened. You are a lightweight and champagne makes you angry." He rubbed at one eye. Damn, he was still drunk.

Lawrence finally seemed to relent with a very heavy sigh.
“I am no one else on the island at present.” He stated. “Chantelle was the only alternate me there is. I am not pleased about discussing it but I have spent a large proportion of my life pretending to be other people. It was a natural extension of my work as a medium as you understand, experiencing other people in my thoughts made me more likely to be able to express alternative selves in my day to day life.” He looked down as he lazily swept a hand thought the water like a child in a bath.
“it makes it easier to pretend I experience emotions in the same way as other people, it is unobtrusive and comfortable. Chantelle was more embraced or at least less threatening on the island than my actual self, so she was a good personality investment. I did not expect it to backfire. H was indeed involved, he was presumably the one who used me as a golem guinea pig and then put what I’d taught into the golem on its own.” His hand clenched. “He had to have known that I couldn’t be Chantelle any longer with a duplicate running around, or at least suspected it. The fact of the matter is that I cannot. It sits wrongly with something in me.”
Melvin got a cold look. “Rin was always yours and always real. If I thought expressing any of this to you would set you against me, I should not have been so honest. And many many things on this island might kill me, H, America, could be anyone. But specifically? No. Just H if he finds out you know.”

Indignity
Being compared to frat brothers was enough to elicit a wince from Lawrence, never a drunk and never happy about being compared to one. His body was happier without the alcohol but it had hardly made him sober.
“I am old but I'm not angry.” He said. “Just getting older every day. Tick Tick Tick she said to me. Tick tick tick and I’m no closer to anything.” Looking down at himself where he lay on the bed he seemed to look at nothing at all. “I need more moths.” He said in a draw. “Need to get younger, they are almost all gone.” Melvin got a look. “Sometimes I think I can feel them, they make me hungry, I need to keep them hungry.”
He closed his eyes. “Would you kill for me Melvin?” he asked, out of nowhere.

"I'm not against you. I know Rin was Rin. I just want to know what might hurt you. Who might hurt you so I'm not ignorant of the dangers you face on island and only looking to the obvious ones on the island."
He moved closer now, beside Jan as he moved to wrap his arms around him.
"I want you to be honest and trust me. I am just new to these things. I'm still a guy from a port town in Maine. It's not like I have a lot of experience and knowledge with a lot of things. I want to learn and offer my support. I want to get to know you. All of you. Can you forgive me for being ignorant though?"
"H is an a*****e. He likes using people for whatever he wants. I'm sorry he has taken something you created and wanted from you." He breathed out. It sounded like between Mikael and Chantelle, he had a lot taken from him.
"I'd help but I guess that would only put you in serious danger though."

The alcohol did a number in Jan and he laid down beside him as Jan spoke. What a strange mood he was in. He supposed with everyone saying how old he was, it got to him. It was like being around a different kind of animal with him. The sound, nature, and mannerisms.
The Tick Tock came off as more of a rhyme. Some old saying he didn't recognize.
He stroked Jans hair and faltered only at the last question. Did he worry about Dawson still. Hungry? He was hungry. Where was the card for room service again?
He resumed striking his hair.
"Remember the portal explosion at the lighthouse. How they wanted to hurt you. Kill you. I was ready to stop them. I was thinking, would I have to kill them? But I knew I couldn't let anyone hurt you. When you vanished, it felt like my world had ended. I don't want that to ever happen. If anyone went after you like that, then .... Then I'd face that. Id do that for us."

"These things." Lawrence repeated distastefully. "You make me sound like some sort of deviant. I forgive you certainly, I always forgive you, but it is puzzling to me when to me who I am is as malleable as changing clothing."
Melvin got a slightly more serious look. "And yes. I cannot be helped in my present situation by anything other than keeping your silence."
