"Good shot -- " Jordan saw Mik's weapon desummon as he fell. "Dammit!" He circled around to put himself between the dullahan and Mik, glancing over his shoulder to see if Mik was still conscious. "Pendant out," he seconded, "and if we don't text or return within ten minutes, get someone to come help us, okay?" He raised Ferros in front of him, and the hammer's runes flashed bright red; steam hissed from Ferros's vents, but the cloud dissipated rapidly in the crackling heat of the fire that leaped around them, startling them both. Jordan shook his head and moved a step back, falling into a defensive stance. HP: 28/60 Healing for: lol Charge: 3/3BOSS HP: 19/100

Mik, afraid and startled by the loss of his weapon and shield took some time to gather his wits and pull himself up to sit.
He looked at the other two wide eyed and tearful and rather than pendanting out just held the penant to his throat and bawled.
"But I don't want to abandon you. I want to help."

Even in the midst of the fight, Horace found a second to glance back at Mikael incredulously. Perhaps the distraction of the crying boy was why his weapon only scratched along the dullahan's leg. Suddenly, supernaturally strong hands were yanking him up by his shirt as the horse whinnied. The fingers were cold, and thin, and Horace twisted. The dullahan flung him away and he landed awkwardly, one leg bent painfully underneath him. He scrambled up, ignoring the jolt of pain in his ankle. Probably just a twist. Keeping his eyes on the horse, he spoke to Mikael. "No, you need to pendant out! That would be helping us! You're not abandoning." His already thin patience was wearing further and he wondered if he could force him to pendant out. HP: 30 DMG: 1 CHG: 2/3 Boss HP: 18/100

"Going back for backup is helping!" Jordan shot another glance at Mik. "Stay back if you won't go - I don't want you to get hurt, when your shield's down it's serious!" He kept himself between the boy and the dullahan, swinging Ferros up into the horse's chest. The hooves came down heavily, but it staggered as it landed, its head dipping low in what looked like exhaustion before the rider hauled savagely on the reins and let loose an inhuman snarl. Finally, Mikael, still sobbing at his own unhelpfulness finally seemed to take the hint and reached up for his pendant. He had tried to help and he had failed them both, it was better if he went away. Sometimes he really did suspect that his father was right all along and that he wasn't right, he wasn't what he was supposed to be.
And he didn't even have Fenrir to tell him he was being silly.
He reached up to the pendant and vanished in a flash.

Horace was startled by Mikael's sudden vanish. It took him a few seconds to realize that the boy had finally ported out. While Mikael's sentiments had been fine and noble, even, he seemed lacking in a hefty dose of practicality. Unfortunately, those few moments were all the dullahan needed to kick Horace backwards. The hooves hit him square in the chest and he stumbled backwards, almost careening into the fire. HP: 22 DMG: 3 CHG: 3/3 Boss HP: 6/100

The soft pop of inrushing air was lost in the roar of the flames, but when Jordan threw another glance over his shoulder, Mik had gone. Jordan hoped that the boy had paid attention to instructions. He thought the dullahan was weakening, but if he was wrong, they were definitely going to need backup, or cleanup. Their shield was eroding steadily with each attack, and if they were in trouble Horace would be also, possibly worse.
The dullahan kicked Horace backward, and Jordan growled and lunged in again, bringing Ferros up and around. The horse staggered, seemed to recover, brought a hoof up to kick at Jordan. Jordan reeled back, but even as he watched, the horse staggered again, one of its forelegs crumpling under it. As it fell, the rider leaped clear, snarling wordless fury, and advanced on the hunters, its lantern head held high and trailing flame.

The horse went down as Horace was picking himself back up. It was an excellent hit, but Horace didn't think now was the time for congratulations. The rider stalked towards Jordan, fiery and seemingly angry. If Horace could get round behind it... He darted to the side, hoping Jordan was enough of a distraction. His ribs protested the movement, bruised - but bruises healed quickly on island. They just had to get out of this. He wondered if Mikael would bring anyone or if he'd forget.
He moved, hands coming up into position to strike out, and his foot stepped on a twig, snapping it cleanly in half. Loudly. The ride whirled and a gout of flame shout out of its mouth, nearly singeing Horace's hair off. He dove out of the way but landed poorly, cursing.

The rider was still clearly dangerous, even with the horse down; its gouting flame swept over Horace. Jordan took the opportunity to lunge at it, swinging Ferros around in a sideways arc at shoulder height. The hammer struck the rider's pumpkin head, and it exploded into a shower of pieces and a billow of flame that washed over Ferros and down to sear Jordan's hands and arms. The headless body froze in place, its arms still lifted. Then it folded over, tumbling to the ground like a puppet with its strings cut. As the body dissolved into nothingness, the fallen horse nearby did likewise. An unearthly wail shrieked upward into the sky and faded to nothing.
Around them, the fire leaped, then sank, the flames sizzling as though hit by a sudden fall of rain, going out as abruptly as they'd caught in the vegetation, and leaving a strange lack of charring or traces, as though they'd never really been there at all. The dark, smoky silhouettes winked out with equal rapidity, and all that remained were the fragments of the pumpkin head, charred and smashed on the ground between Jordan and Horace.
Jordan shook his head and stood up straight, rolling his shoulders and not yet desummoning Ferros. "Well, that was interesting," he said, his voice sounding loud in the sudden silence.

Horace flinched as flaming bits of pumpkin rained down near him. As far as ends went, Ferros definitely added a dramatic flair to things. He picked himself up, brushing off a bit of sticky head-squash. "A flaming homerun?" He cracked his neck loudly and desummoned so he could fish around in his pockets. The danger might still lurk but the lifers might appreciate some bits of possessed pumpkin. A crumpled specimen bag was produced from one of his back pockets and Horace dutifully collected the scorched gourd. He sealed the bag and held it a little away from himself, awkwardly. It smelled like smoke, gross. "So I think that's.... it. Should we get outta here before more come or before Mikael shows up with ill-timed back-up?"

"Hopefully I knocked it out of here," Jordan said, and picked a piece of gourd off his coat. He was going to need to spend some time cleaning up the splatter from that, but it was better than blood or a number of other nasty substances. "Yeah, I think we found what we were looking for. Let's get out of here and let Mikael know we took it down." Jordan nodded. "I want to tell him he was a pretty big help, too, he sounded like he was being hard on himself. My fault for not giving good instructions." He sighed and turned back. "You good?"

"Orange is a good look for you." He grinned and pulled his pendant out of a pocket. The smile faltered a bit at Jordan's mention of Mikael. "Usually, he flat out refuses to fight, even if it means someone else getting hurt. I thought he knew better than to pop his own damn shield with a charge, though." He shrugged.

Jordan snorted. "The slime's a fashion statement, I guess." "Huh. Suppose he knew he was going to blow his shield with that? He did some serious damage." He shook his head and took his pendant out from under his shirt. "What's with the pacifists, I wonder? You'd think they wouldn't join up in the first place."

"I honestly have no ********' clue. He makes sandcastles instead of doing any training and believes he can get by without fighting." Horace sighed. "It's pretty well-detailed that you're gonna be fighting when you sign up - ugh, whatever." He rubbed the pendant between his fingers. "Let's split. Deus ex machina."

Jordan shook his head, frowning a little. "He might do better taking up a defensive role. Something to mention to him." He nodded at Horace and watched him vanish, took one last look around, and folded his hand around his own pendant. " Deus ex machina." Baneful probably fine to leave it here unless you want to play out getting back to Mik?
