He offered Otto a slight, wan smile.
"Everyone does stupid s**t," said Chance, the ice pack doing wonders for his throbbing head. He shifted a little and laughed softly, his other hand rising to idly rub against his forehead, running through his hair. Chance eased out a breath, gaze flickering away from Otto's.
"I suppose I'm just...not used to actually caring about whether I come out in one piece, as much as I talk big about it," he said dryly.

"Sometimes I get that way. Not carin' if I come back, and all. Either cause I feel like the gain is worth the risk, or just.." He shrugged, averting his gaze, "Or the fight just gets too much. This sorta life makes it real easy to get discouraged or confused." "But, if you feel like you gained somethin' outta this, then it was all worth it."

He rubbed absently at the stars on his temple, Chance sliding his gaze back to Otto.
"Yes, I've gained a new appreciation for ice packs," he said lightly, teasingly, but the expression in his eyes was something more serious; an understanding, perhaps. "And that you're kind of an a** sometimes, but that's okay, I still like you."
He was silent for a moment, and then asked, "You feel like that lately at all?"

"Only kind of an a**?" He was sure he was just a full on a*****e. But maybe it was subjective. Otto shook his head. "Not lately. I haven't felt too stressed in a while." His problems no longer felt like unclimbable mountains. At least not for now. "Even the last big screw up.. I was upset. But I knew I'd get past it."

"Only kind of," Chance deadpanned. "You have your non-a*****e moments."
It was somewhat nice to hear that Otto's stress level was down. He let out a soft hum of thought at this. "Which was the last big screw up? The s**t with the virus and all that?"

"Yeah. But like you said, it was out of my control. Nobody on the island attacked like that cause they wanted to. And we don't even know how we got infected to begin with. It just sorta happened." Maybe he ought to have done some digging after ward. He'd been caught up in his own affairs. Who would he go to, though? Every Lead and Assistant he knew was either an oddball or completely unhelpful. Leaders he could not rely on or look up to. Maybe that was why he always felt so lost.

"And I still stand by that," said Chance, the ice pack beginning to soak through his hair. "It was all just a big pile of s**t, no one was doing anything deliberately." His neck was mostly healed now anyway, hardly any traces of the bruises and scrapes left, which was a relief, mostly because Chance did not want Otto looking at his throat and feeling pained.
There was a slight smile of amusement on his face.
"You've changed a little, since I first met you," said Chance. "Not entirely, obviously," he added. "But...still, you've changed. In a good way."

"I haven't checked on Maebe in a while.." He murmured, somewhat to himself. He'd have to make time to see her again. Maybe her bandages were off now. Otto blinked. "I have?" He asked curiously. He thought back to when they first met. He'd been confused back then. Lost, and unsure of himself. "Maybe a little..." His attention fell to Chance's head. "Oh.. if your ice pack is melting, I can replace it." He kept a couple on hand in the freezer. In their line of work, even after a rough day of training, they came in handy.

"I texted her yesterday, but I haven't heard back from her yet," said Chance, wincing a little at the memory because forgetting that Maebe had bandages around her face had meant she couldn't read his texts anyway. Or maybe there was someone who could read them aloud for her.
His smile was a mixture of amusement and reassurance as Chance added, "Yeah. Not like...well, not dramatically, I suppose, but enough that it matters. I think you sort of...found yourself a bit, maybe?"
Or maybe he was just over thinking it, for once. Chance blinked a little.
"Sorry," he said with a laugh, and pulled the ice pack out from beneath his head, fingers slippery with water. "I'm getting your couch all wet."

"Oh yeah?" He murmured back noncommittally. "Maybe I did a little." He was at least more comfortable with himself now than he was then. He didn't feel the need to fight himself, or deny himself. He was learning to accept who he was, and live happily. "It's seen worse." He remarked in regards to the couch. taking the pack away. "How's your head?" Not that he was sorry he hit him or anything, baka.

"Change is good," said Chance. "I'm still learning how to do it, but, well...we'll see."
He handed over the ice pack and gingerly pressed his fingers against his head. The cuff jingled against his wrist, sliding down a little, the gold on his skin more clearly visible now. Chance gave it a wary look, wondering if it was possible to take it off.
"Still kinda hurts, but I think it's dimming down a little," he said, and then grinned up at Otto, a teasing note ebbing into his voice. "Why, feeling bad about the fact that you smacked me?"

He was laughing now, Chance pushing himself up on one elbow to grin at Otto.
"That would be mean," he said, half a pout as he struggled to sit up normally, leaning back against the couch. "Especially since I'm under lockdown and stuck here for who knows how long. Also you're cute when your're stub - ow ******** ow - "
In the process of moving, he'd accidentally knocked his ankle against the coffee table, sending reverberations of pain shooting up and down his leg. Chance leaned his head back against the couch and closed his eyes briefly, inhaling sharply.
"This ******** sucksssssss," he groaned out. "******** hell."
