The sound of rustling at the door had Riley's grip on her chair tightening so tensely, her nails dug into the wood. She immediately recognized the face at the door and let out an audible sigh of relief, relaxing against her chair - Sammy would know what to do. And now she could be a member of their new blessed silver chicken order, thanks to -

Her mouth fell open in horror. Did Sammy just suggest they eat the chicken? And another came in to the cottage, suggesting the same. Blasphemy! The order was doomed!

Riley picked up the chicken, who had stuck to her since the moment it had been summoned, and her arms wrapped protectively around it. Her face pinched in a childish pout, brow furrowed with disappointment. "We are not eating Sir Cluckington." She informed them, having just named the chicken now. "Besides, we don't have time to eat. We're trying to figure out a plan to save the lives of the knights still in the castle, before it's too late." They hadn't been here for the information dump, and Riley was too protective of her chicken to repeat it, so she could only hope one of the boys would.

As two others entered, it began to feel a little crowded in the cottage. It was easy to miss the child entering, but the drop of a bucket had her attention instantly, and the sight of it brought joy to her expression. A child!

Riley slowly moved off of the chair, and got down on her knees near the boy. Still holding the chicken, she held out her other hand, palm upwards for him. "Hello, little one. We mean nothing but peace and protection for you. Is this your home, that we've stumbled upon? Where are your parents?"

My character's name: Riley Illithadian
Character's journal link: ok
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY CHARACTER Tall, slender, graceful, and entirely obsessed with purity; Riley was raised from birth as a priestess of the light, and continues to follow the values and practices of her stringent sisterhood. She is always prepared with a ritual or a prayer to help purify anything necessary, especially the air and water surrounding them, or the earth beneath their feet. She does not like being touched, or looked at for very long, nor will she meet the gaze of a passerby for longer than is absolutely necessary. She is meek, humble, and completely unprepared for what lies ahead of her.
Physical Description: CLICK HERE She wears an unadorned white medieval dress, and a belt of large, extremely heavy prayer beads as a constant burden to remind her of her duty. Her face is partially covered by a modesty veil, which hangs at the lower half of her face. Her eyes are grey, and her hair is black, with only the top layer matted into tight dreadlocks using beeswax - these are carefully wrapped and braided with purple and white ribbons. See this picture for an example of this hairstyle. Intricate filigree of some metal slips in and out of the top of her hair, weaving upward into delicate designs created with special religious significance in mind.

[Zar]

Zar did not seem to have any real sympathy for scared upset children and instead addressed the kid as if he was addressing a servant or some inferior class of person, looking down his perfect nose with disdain.

"Well I am Sir Zar of the Violet order of knights, liberator of the serpentus and moonstone artifacts and all round fantastic looking man. Beyond that, I am not even sure who I am. As for this shower of cretins.." and he looked around the room disdainfully. "I can't rightly say. They appear to be some sort of inane chicken cult."

He narrowed his brows. "Chickens do not need names and we need energy to free the important people who are captured. And by important I mean a black knight named Barth, everyone else can frankly rot."

He gave the boy an expectant look. "Now about that food. Produce the goods."

[ Bradley ]

New arrivals? It was inevitable, even if Bradley really want to keep to their tiny club of escaped knights. The new members were a bit arrogant, clearly had no sense of humors and were more devoted to eating the chicken than letting the tension lessen and relax a bit.

He would admit later that he jumped when the little boy appeared out almost nowhere, but the big knight kept quiet, not wanting to scare the kid. Besides Riley seemed to have a good handle on it.

Then Zar opened his mouth. Bradley stared at him with annoyance, blowing air out of his nose. Oh lovely, a pompous a*****e who though he was above everything else because he found some pretty 'artifacts'. Oh how lovely.

"Oi, Prissy Man, back off from the kid. If you want to eat food, don't scare him off." Bradley crossed his arms and a made a point to glare harder at Zar.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY CHARACTER Bradley is a tall young man with brown hair and brown eyes. He's incredibly gunho about this whole knight thing. He's jovial, hardworking, and really likes to smash things with objects. Almost too much. Many a barn has been destroyed because he gets too 'smash happy'. He's hoping joining the Red Faction will temper some of that excess energy. He's decently trained with war-scythes and other polearms.

[Zar]

Bradley got no acknowledgement other than a very haughty stare and a dismissive wave of the hand that was all perfect nails and not really the hands of a man who'd fought a single battle in his life.

Lass glared at the fancy knight all decked out in viplet almost feeling the urge to punch and defend what shred of honor she had. Even if violet her second favorite color she still felt that she of all people didn't deserve to be lumped in the group she had just met. If they were a cult of chicken lovers she had no real interest in being a part of it.

However Lass realized on vital point that the pompous a** mentioned. "Wait, wait... I thought we were eating the chicken, why are we naming it Sir Cluckington if we are not eating it? And yes you," Lass spoke with a louder tone as she pointed to the kid."Like the fancy pants said where's the food in this place I am starved after running and need something to eat before going back to the death hold of the castle. I guess tho if worse came to worse we could eat the chicken and the kid. If he is really a kid I mean."

Despite being threatened for food, it seemed the child had grown attached to Zar, now clinging to the man's shirt. "Mmmm," he mumbled, suddenly shy again, "I'm Arthur and this is my house and I live here alone."

A pause. "And- and- I don't have any more food - but I have a sword! But you have to promise not to be evil witches and I'll show you."

[Zar]

Zar looked utterly exasperated at the little boy and hoped that his hands weren't half as grubby as where he stayed, initially he tried to extricate him from him before giving up entirely.

"Okay Arthur." he said grimly. "We have swords too." Maybe there was food, maybe they just had to entertain the boy and they'd find something edible. "And we aren't evil witches. I can say that much, I'm pretty sure it's the evil witches that started this, some Morgana lady. We are just boring old nobodies who happen to be really extraordinarily good looking."

He sighed, waving his hand in the direction of the room. "Lead the way, I guess."

Upon believing that they were indeed not evil witches from a single confirmation from a stranger, Arthur's expression brightened considerably. "Yay! I mean- follow me, good um- good sir!"

He didn't wait for Zar or anyone and ran on bare feet through the cottage. The other side was an expansive garden, it was obvious someone had put a lot of time and dedication into keeping the place tamed. At the far end was a thick, out-of-place patch of brambles and inside it a stone.

A beautiful, glistening sword was buried in the stone.

[Zar]

Zar followed along exasperatedly, feeling as if he had somehow ended up being some really unfortunate babysitter.

He paused, one hand on a hip as he looked at the sword.

"So, what, is it some sort of art statement?" he said, looking entirely unimpressed. "Does it come out? You can't really weild a sword with a rock on the end, it'd be like..." he waved a hand vaguely. "....balance...and stuff."

"I'd be more impressed by some soup."

Arthur made a face. "I don't like soup. Especially when my f-" he suddenly put a hand to his mouth, as if he said something forbidden. Taking a moment to make sure nobody else heard, he suddenly said dramatically "Whoever shall pick up the sword will be crowned the True King!"

Puffing up his chest, he wiggled right through the thorns and drew the sword right out of the rather impressive rock.

The weapon was way too big for him, and he had to drop it point end down after two seconds.

The number of unfriendly stares being leveled Zar's way should have lit the man on fire, but he appeared to be shrouded in the protective shell of his own ego. Johan could only listen in bafflement as the child, introduced as Arthur, seemed to form an attachment to the oaf.

Not really believing the child actually had a sword, Johan indulgently followed after Arthur as he ran through the cottage. When they emerged into a well-kept garden, Johan stopped to look at the vegetation in wonder. If only it were a vegetable garden. The snarl of brambles Arthur ran to caught his eye, and trotted over when he realized there really was a sword! Half-buried in stone of all things. He knelt down to look at it, while Zar made a further a** of himself.

When Arthur made his declaration, and actually pulled the sword out of the rock, Johan's eyes grew as round as saucers.

"Did you say True King?"

[Zar]

Zar raised a brow at the stifled mention of another potential individual in the boy's supposed solitary life. He was only concerned about the possibility of a father in the event that said father came home without warning and realised his house was full of wanted convicts and figured the reward was worth a lot more than the danger to his food supplies they presented.

He didn't look too impressed at the pulling the sword out of the rock trick. "So you are the True King." he said with complete scepticism dripping from every syllable. "Why would they crown a little runt who doesn't even like soup?"

He furrowed his brows. "You shouldn't toss it around like that though." he said, pointing at the sword. "You have to take care of the edge on a sword, if its blunt its no good to anyone."

Though it was probably a bit redundant giving this advice given the damn thing had been stuck in a rock for who knew how long.

"Yeah!" Exclaimed the kid excitedly, "I'm gonna be the true king just like- Just um- just like nobody."

As Zar mentioned soup, Arthur looked a little crestfallen. "Does it have to be soup?" That was pretty much the only thing he got out of the entire conversation.

[Zar]

Zar really, really did not like children. "Well ok. We can entertain this ridiculous idea. Say you are the true king, then why are you hiding out in the forest? Why aren't you out there fixing the fact that I have nothing to eat and my friend is in prison?" He waved his hand dismissively.

"Royalty is who you are related to, not what you can pull out of rocks. You aren't impressive enough to be a king."

He'd really put himself in the mood for soup.

"We are not eating the chicken." Riley huffed at Lass, clutching the creature tighter to her bosom. The child gave them his name, but the fact that he lived here alone made no sense. Children did not live in cottages alone. Children did not live in well managed cottages alone in a forest.

Riley stood up, and watched him run off. The group slowly began to follow, but Riley continued to hesitate, her eyes never leaving the child until he was out of sight.

She gave the cottage one last look, looking for clues as to whether it was the kind of home a child could manage to live in alone for an extended period of time. It wasn't completely implausible, and yet-

And yet-

The garden sealed her disbelief. It looked absolutely beautiful, and well cared for, with brambles surrounding a mystical looking sword inside of a stone. Did that raise no flags to anyone else? Zar seemed entirely nonplussed with the situation, but Riley was holding her chicken like a lifeline, looking herself like a bird ready to fly the moment danger exposed itself. She wouldn't be manipulated again. She refused. Her mind was her own, and she would not hurt her friends.

"Arthur, how old are you?" She whispered, barely audible but still trembling with fear. "How long have you lived alone in this cottage?"
