Alionse felt admiration go through him when Vesper agreed to race him without hesitation. She didn't ask for a head-start or complained about his having wings making it easier, she just went for it and she was quick too. For a moment he was sure that she would win, but he managed to push up with a sort of glide jump until he reached the top.

Smiling he twisted around, holding out his hand to help her out. "A prize?" he asked, surprise. He hadn't thought of that. He started to tell her he didn't need a prize, until a thought occurred to home. He hesitated, but then went for it. "Meet me again. That's what I want for my prize."

There was a hint of a blush on his cheeks, but his face was set in determination.

Accepting the helping hand with a nod of thanks, Vesper crossed the final stretch to the top.

It was her turn to be surprised when Alionse named his prize. She had left the choice of prizes open-ended, had wondered if she would have cause to regret it, had even speculated about how to bargain him down to a more reasonable prize. Now it seemed like she'd been overthinking, after all.

"Just that?" she wondered, favoring him with an impish smile. "I'll agree, but aren't you letting me off too easy?"

When Vesper accepted his hand, Alionse was surprised just how warm it was. He wasn't sure what he expected, but he found himself unable to let go at the feel of the pleasant warmth. Then his attention was pulled away from the touch when she answered him.

A small half-smile curled his lips at her answer. He felt someone relieved that she agreed, but that was soon turned to mild surprise at her next words. "I am?" he asked. He had thought he had been pushing his luck, but if she thought he should ask for something more. He tilted his head as he glanced back at her and suddenly a thought of what he could ask popped into his head.

Immediately a blushed climbed his face from his neck all the way to his hair. I can't believe I thought of asking- He mentally shook the thought away and as he did he realized he was still holding her hand. He let go, feeling slightly guilty. He looked to the side.

"I wouldn't know what to ask," he lied.

Sensing the lie, Vesper abandoned her attempts to dust off her dress to look across at Alionse. His cheeks were definitely a few shades darker. "Have I embarrassed you? I didn't mean to."

She thought for a moment more, then added, "If you can't think of anything else, I'll meet you again. But where?" He definitely didn't live on Soudul, and she doubted she could go wherever it was that Orderites lived. Maybe she could ask a spy or assassin? That hardly seemed fitting.

He shook his head, quickly denying his embarrassment despite the evidence to the contrary. He quickly tried to staunch down his embarrassment and his thoughts, and luckily enough he was given a reprieve when Vesper asked her next question. Honestly, he hadn't thought about that. Of course, it should have been in forefront of his mind.

He was an Orderite and she was an Oblivionite They were natural enemies, so how could they meet again? He frowned. He didn't want to give up though. He wanted to see Vesper again, to find out more about her. He thought hard on the question when a thought came to him.

"The hybrid city. My father goes there to trade every month. ...I've never been, but he tells me story. There, anyone is welcome - Orderite, Oblivion, Dovaa. It doesn't matter. We could write to each other and plan to meet there." He felt excitement race through him, but then it deflated. "I mean, would you be able to meet there?"

Vesper motioned for Alionse to precede her in the tunnel. "There would be lots of interesting things to buy there, right?" she thought aloud, testing out the argument she would use on her father and stepmother. Monthly visits on her part were likely out of the question, but... "I'll be able to go at least once." A playful impulse prompted her to add, "You'll have to earn any further meetings."

Moving through the tunnel, she asked, "What does your father trade there, anyway?"

Alionse nodded as he began crawling through the tunnel. "Yeah, there are lots of things that you can get there you can't get other places, because all merchants are allowed there." He crawled further into the tunnel and chuckled. "And how am I supposed to earn more meetings?"

He shrugged. "My father owns his own engineering workshop, so he has a lot of mechanical devices that are hard to find outside of an Orderite City."

How should he earn more meetings? Good question. "Oh, I'm sure I'll think of something," Vesper replied cheerfully as she continued her crawl. Thank goodness the conversation was keeping her mind off how grimy her dress must be getting in these tunnels.

She brightened up as a tunnel with their tracks came into view. The cave's exit must be close. Still the boy's words snared her attention. "An engineering workshop? Does that mean you can make mechanical devices too?"

"No," Alionse said, shaking his head. "I was supposed to but..." He shrugged, suddenly unsure what he should say on the topic. Instead he focused on the opening from the tunnel. "I'm better at taking things apart."

They were back to where they started. He stepped outside the tunnel and looked out to see the sun was setting.

He turned back to Vesper. "It's getting late."

"Taking things apart is good. It teaches you how things work on the inside," Vesper mused, shifting the bundled dragon souls to hang from her shoulder rather than her arm. The setting sun greeted them as they made it outside. Time really does fly when you're having fun, she thought.

"We should be getting back," she murmured, turning toward the boy with a small smile as he turned to her. In case they were heading in different directions, she added by way of farewell, "See you in the city sometime."

Alionse shuffled his feet. "Wait. Um...how can I get in contact with you?" He ran a hand through his hair, feeling a little sheepish. "I meant what I said about meeting up again and writing you."

He felt hesitantly to just leave things as they were, but he knew they each had to go, but still, at least this way he would know that they really would see each other again.

Vesper hesitated, her expression growing thoughtful. Letters might raise questions. Then again, questions were easy to dodge, letters easy to hide. The real problem was how to transport letters to and from Soudul.

A long moment passed before her expression cleared and she snapped her fingers. "There's an Oblivionite alchemist I know who travels around a lot. To the hybrid city too." And didn't mind about race, which was crucial here. "The next time you go, write down the dates of your next trips, and leave your letter with him." She went on to give the man's name and a quick description. "Will that work?"

Alionse memorized the information and nodded. "Yes, that will work. Thanks Vesper." He felt a wave of excitement at the thought. His smile was just a touch wider, an unusual occurrence for him. He glanced back at the sky and then turned back to Vesper.

"Do you want me to walk you halfway?"
He knew it would be foolish to walk her all the way back. They got along well enough, but he wasn't sure if any other Oblivionites would be happy to see him.

Seeing Alionse's smile, Vesper's smile widened a little. "You're quite welcome."

Following the boy's example, she gazed up at the sky, expression growing pensive. Night's encroaching darkness would not hinder her walk, but would it be a problem for an Orderite?

"Only if it's not out of your way," she decided. "I'm going that way." She pointed toward the seaside town in the distance. "I'll be fine, either way." Crooking an impish smile, she stretched out slim arms as if to embrace the heavens. "Darkness is our element, after all, as light is yours."

Seeing her with her arms stretched out, an impish smile on her face, somehow made his breath catch and for a moment he just took in the sight of her. It felt somehow strange and he wondered if all Oblivionite's were this mesmerizing. He tore his gaze away.

"All right. I'll walk you part of the way. Maybe it's me who will need your help." H started forward, feeling somehow strangely content.
