His horse had a fit, and when Barth dismounted to calm him, ran off.
Barth just sighed some more.

"Both of us get to walk." he said grimly. He was rather tired already, but at least like this, he could walk a little more elbow to elbow and have an excuse. "I have no idea if I have done anything to offend anyone, I don't think I'm strong enough to do that frankly."
He stooped to pick up a bag from the side of the road, sweeping some of the tracked dust from it.
"Oh goodie, more things to carry."

Barth brushed himself off at the top.
"There. That's settled, at least- oh. Well, hello. We don't actually need- yes. Thank you. Yes. Do you have...somewhere to stay...or, family, or...?"
Why was there an old person just left unattended up here. Had they made it past the arrows? They couldn't have moved very fast.

"I am not very fond of mountains, if I'm honest." and as if on cue he stepped on a stone panel which sunk underfoot. He looked concerned for a moment and then with a hiss and a mercifully non-venomous bite, was sent fleeing to where Barth was at the top, he hoped they were almost there.
