He had no idea if the charge would work underwater since Syn used fire, but apparently that didn't matter: the illusion of fire still happened, and he still felt the extra layer of warmth settle over him as the Fear was let go. Too bad the image of a glowing roly poly didn't discourage the turtle.

Did people ever have this much trouble with a mutated sea turtle, or was that just him? He was barely able to swim, let alone swing.

And then, at a crucial moment, he fumbled. The Fear exposed sea critter immediately set upon him, and he was reminded of the statues in the Temple of Heracles.

A solid whump cracked over the turtle's shell, and this time Dawson's whine was made physical. There was blood in the water and it panicked him--not because it would attract more predators (though that was certainly a concern) but because he was harming an actual creature so badly.

And in his panic, his shield drove a wedge between the turtle's neck and its shell. It wasn't enough to behead the creature, but it was a mortal blow; immediately it ceased attacking and fell limp in a fog of its own blood.
Freaking out and on his last leg emotionally and physically, Dawson pushed himself to the surface.

After letting Scout get the carcass of the turtle he could barely look at, and after letting himself have a breather, Dawson took his stash to the basement. It wasn't the coziest of places to people, but it had grudgingly become a home to him; it certainly helped that he had all but padded the floor with blankets, pillows, and bean bag chairs. It was the closes the came to a peaceful spot for now; the common room was too open, and he didn't want to bother someone to borrow their room just because it had more space and a window.
Concentration was hard at first. It was easy enough for his mind to wander and even easier to focus on the frustrated as the runes fizzled rather than on maintaining the inner calm it needed to function at all. His foot kept tapping and his fingers drummed along with them, and only when he hit the tenth failed rune did Dawson force himself to put everything down, shed his hat, take a few deep breaths, and try again. Eventually he got through his little hoard and separated them into three different piles, sighing.
Right. Infirmary time.

It felt like providence that Horace told him about his swimming promotion shortly before he went out to get stones. Hopefully they would both be able to do their jobs without getting mauled.

Nnnooooo no no no, he did not want to kill more sea creatures. The turtle one had just been sad, this crab didn't have to suffer the same fate. Even though crabs weren't supposed to have three claws.
