Too little, too late. He tried the spin again but the weight threw him off, and the creatures pounced.
In minutes he was brought back to the beginning of the course again, wincing and with his shark hat tugged low out of embarrassment. Dawson knew attacking had never been his strong suit--neither with words or with weapons--but still nobody liked underperforming. "Sawry," he said to Gretchen, fidgeting on the spot. "Look, ya don' hafta wait on me since yer done."

Gretchen stayed near the entrance, waiting for Dawon to reappear again after one of the techs had informed her that he'd charged into the course a third time. She wasn't in any hurry, so she could wait. Kicked back against the wall, hands folded behind her back, she had her head tipped up to watch the passage of clouds over head and humming something softly beneath her breath before the sound of his voice pulled her attention back to the real world and out of her own head. A curious blink followed that initial apology, and the Death tipped her head before shaking it, smiling. "Ain't no sorry." Reaching out, she tugged up the bill of his cap so she could see his face better. "I can wait, you kick shadow butt, then we grab something to eat maybe?" A beat. "If you want."

He shrank without the cover of his cap, gulped, and nodded. "That'd be nice," he mumbled.

The second time, he made it a little further. The shadowlings sensed his weakness off the bat, but if there was one thing Dawson had learned, it was keep moving.

He remembered the lions and bulls he and Maebe had to slay far too many times. In comparison, the shadows felt so soft, easy even. Syn basked in the idea of the word, but Dawson was cautious.

He was nearing the end again. Dawson hastily wiped his palms on his jeans as he advanced, bulldozing through a wave as it crashed around and almost over his shield.

But it was just like before. Not even the promise of food could fuel him enough to get past the second wave, and they tumbled over him like an avalanche of darkness.
