Even turned away she can probably hear in the shape of his exhale the fact that he's rolling his eyes towards the ceiling as if praying for some forbearance.
"Or not. I just... get really tired of talking about this. I'm tired of apologizing for it but I feel like I have to every time because I'm still ******** sorry. You know?"

"You shouldn't have to keep apologizing for it," she insists. "I'm grateful for how things are now, I don't want that to drag you down." And yet here she was, the words she really wanted to say still a confused jumble and the willingness to even keep on the subject closing down quickly.
With a sigh she sits up to crawl off the bed, "I should go for a bit. Be back later if it's okay."

"S'always OK," he says quietly, touching his fingertips to the back of her wrist, and he must mean the coming back because he's already made it obvious once that the leaving isn't. And then, abruptly: "I find it--really hard to be now, lately. Because I'm too hung up on a week from now, a month from now, everything. I just don't want you to get hung up in the other direction, either. But if you are I'd rather know about it than not know about it. Even if I was just an a*****e about it. Especially if the alternative is what makes you wanna leave."

He considers this uncomfortably; considers the fragmented memories of fists slamming into human teeth for a raucous audience. "For what?" He asks because he doesn't want to think about it but can't help the sense of obligation.

He almost leaves it there, before he realizes he's doing it again--assuming he knows what she means, when he's almost always wrong in those moments.
"Why not?" he whispers, chasing her fingers again. And then, compulsively: "I love you but sometimes I wish you weren't here."

He shuts off the water, bowing his head to still the indignant anger down long enough to say something without yelling at her. It takes a minute.
"Can I explain the missions thing, at least?" And maybe it's a grab at changing the subject, but maybe too it's something he's been wanting to say, because he adds, grimly: "We can revisit the twelve-step bullshit right ******** after, if you want."

Gripping his fingers briefly she let them go, and got off the bed. "I just need to get myself in order," she said as she left. "I'll be back."
It was several hours and a long, exhaustive run before his door opened and she headed toward his bathroom. The girl paused to drop a kiss on his hair, smelling like sweat and forest and carrying less of the weight she'd left with. It wasn't gone, but it was together and less of a tangle. It had a little box that she could take and put away on good days, and could sweep things into at the end of bad ones.
"You don't make me want t'leave, Obadiah Thompson," she assured him belatedly, voice quiet, "you make me want t'come back."

Going quiet awhile, she finally answers with a question of her own. "You ever notice some of the new trainees they like...keep their s**t in boxes right up until they movie? Or just don't buy anything in the first place. Don't make things theirs? Well I guess like that...I guess I was always ready to just pick up and leave."
Turning into him, she kissed his shoulder, "If I wasn't here I'd wish you weren't either. Both of us or neither."

"I just don't want to be all willfully stupid about it and if something ever happens..." She bumped the back of her head against the mirror and dropped it for now. "It's okay...about the mission thing," she added dully. "I don't hold it against you. Work is work, and you try to be professional 'bout it where you can."
