Bare Necessities

It was that second please that stopped her. Gazing up at him, mouth set, she stated with quiet firmness, "I'm not here for you to treat me like s**t and then tell me it's my fault."

Where do you go

She entered the room all pale and windswept, expression pensive and smelling like the sea. Padding over to the chair, she rested her knees on the arm rest and apologized quietly, "Sorry I keep you up. Shoulda explained the first time instead of just assuming you understood. Please don't stop me again though."

Fancy Meeting You Here

"No. You said you'd back off if I wanted the satisfaction of dealing with him myself, which isn't the ******** point. I don't want the satisfaction. I don't ******** care. It's not my job. He'll get dealt with or he won't. It's not your job either. I want you to back off because it's ******** ridiculous, not because it's my--my ******** right, or whatever you think is going on here."

Bare Necessities

He stood, still and silent, jaw working as he looked past her and tried to find something to say besides a plaintive it is your fault, and it was Fiona that reminded him, gently, wordlessly, of certain conversations about men in America's past.

"This is not," he said finally, very quietly, all wounded and careful, "me trying to say it was your fault. I just--I'm upset. It upset me. It's still upsetting me, I'm not going to lie to you about it, I'm still ********' pissed, I just don't want you to--to think I'm saying it's your fault I'm an a*****e." Even though it is, this time. "You didn't know it was gonna upset me." He refrained from adding for some ******** reason that I cannot fathom, although the temptation was dire. "I should have--realized that. That you didn't mean to." But you did it. "And then I wouldn't have--done that. But I can't make myself not pissed so let's just go back to my room, please, and sort it out. Or not sort it out, you can just ignore me, just don't feel like you have to go back out in the rain when there's a warm room right here. Please."

Where Do You Go

He watched her but avoided her eye, watched her knees pressed into the fabric of the chair, watched her hands, anything but her face.

Finally, after a long silence, he put the book down, stubbed the cigarette out in the ashtray on the floor, and held out a hand for her.

"I get so ********' worried that you feel like--that I'm a weight around your neck." Please stay tonight. Please. And now when she said no she'd spend the night alone, and this was, and he knew it, his fault. And god, how it stuck in his throat to feel guilt for it; god, how he ******** hated the idea that it wasn't a matter of course, that he'd allowed it at all, but he had. "Or if I'm not you still scare me when you get like that. The only time you ever didn't--" He swallowed. "I don't like feeling helpless," he said, finally lifting his eyes to search her face. "I won't stop you again. I just wish you'd tell me how long you need to get away. And why. But I won't, even if you don't."

"It's not ridiculous," she insisted, drawing herself up, back straight and chin proud. "So I'll take myself out of rotation but don't you think that's why." Working swiftly she unloaded the water casks, frustration palpable.

"It's me respecting your request and that'll have to do."

Bare Necessities

Quiet for several long moments she finally jogged up the steps, passing him by without another word or attempt to hold his hand. She walked ahead of him and kept her distance until they reached his door.

Where do you go

Taking his hand in both of hers she stayed quiet for awhile until sliding down to join him in the cramped space of the chair. As always after these episodes, she's the cold one, tucking against his warmth and the comfort of being held. "I'm sorry," she repeated in a morose mumble against his shirt. "Shouldn't have yelled at you just for worrying. Not any sort of burden, n' I wish that sort of thing never crossed your mind."

Bare Necessities

He let her in--he always did if he wasn't pulling her in beside him, boyish and eager and drunk on affection and physical contact, which he certainly wasn't doing now. Wordlessly he squeezed past her for the closet door, already stripping off his damp shirts. His angry trembling had subsided in favor of shivering, his bare arms goosebumped, his hands shaking as he offered her a towel.

"Do you want me to leave you alone?"

Fancy

An explosive sound of frustration made its way between his teeth as he helped her.

"Jesus ******** Christ you are ******** infuriating," he hissed. It was, definitely, the sort of comment that indicated he was just filing this argument away for later, crafting it into ammunition to be fired when convenient.

Where Do You Go

It was sick, it was perverse, but the satisfaction of yelling at her and being yelled at was far outmatched by the satisfaction of hearing her apologize. There was no symmetry: here, now, while he warmed her up chafing her arms with his shaking hands and she said I'm sorry, the raw pleasure was enough to make him lightheaded. It was half a fix, and he offered the other half, returned the apology against her hair, once and then twice.

"I do trust you," he added quietly. "I'm sorry if I get scared enough to forget it sometimes." A pause. "Do you feel better?" And then, inconsequential, since his nose was in her hair and it was true: "You smell good. Like water."

Bare Necessities

"No, you don't get out of it that easy," she answered, tone still distinctly shitty as she snubbed the towel. It apparently began with her stripping out of the sweater and bottoms and tossing them into a damp, messy pile in the center of his bed. The rest of her clothes followed, landing on his pillow. Naked, she stalked to his bathroom; the sound of the bath running strongly indicated that his hot water supply was now being threatened.

Fancy

He was answered with a roll of the eyes. She was fairly certain that, should one Obadiah Thompson ever write her into a dictionary, infuriating would be the first word in there. Even before hot as ********> and fantastic tits, and well before sweet.

Where do you go

"It's okay," she murmured, arms tightening around him. She didn't have the heart right now, to tell him he'd ruined it. That the acts of restraining and allowing had left a bitter smear across what should have been pure and simple relief.

"I walked down to the beach," was as much of an explanation as he would get that night. It was followed by, "I love you." And it was reminder to herself as well when she repeated it, turning her face into his jaw. "Sorry I've been keeping you up all the time."

The guilt was sincere and it felt good to apologize over the fact that she still wasn't okay enough to be back to normal. It felt good to have a clear cut reason to voice it in some small way.

Bare Necessities

It was as well that she was out of the room so she didn't have to see the epic, teenage-girl-levels of eyerolling that ensued, nor the teeth-gritted, childishly violent seizing up of her mess and hurling it into his laundry, nor the way he hissed an irritated rant under his breath as he made use of the towel himself and changed into fresh clothes. It wasn't until he'd done all this and was rooting around to find her something to wear (a shame that she was so tall and great tits and he so short and scrawny, that the whole wearing-a-shirt-as-a-dress option was out of the question, not least because he had fond memories along those lines and would dearly have loved to refresh them with America Jones) that he raised his voice above the sound of the water running.

"I was not ******** trying to get out of it," he yelled. "I was trying to do you a ******** favor, give you some space if you wanted it."

He didn't bother to stop yelling when he pushed into the bathroom to drop his largest sweater (neatly folded, because of course it was) and a fresh towel onto the corner of the tub. He was drying his hair and the fact that he was absently looking into the mirror as he did so--an activity he studiously avoided as much as possible--indicated the level of his angry abstraction. "So go ahead, tell me why I'm being unreasonable and why you as always acted with unimpeachable grace and consideration."
