“Weeeell,” she dragged out the word, thoughtfully. “Daddy might yell a bit, but he yells a lot. He worries a lot, too.” He was probably worried about her right now. But it was hard to take Daddy’s worries too seriously, because Mommy always said that it wasn’t a big deal and Daddy worried about everything. Then again, sometimes Daddy’s worries were reasonable. At least, Mommy said they were. Nova was never certain what was reasonable and what wasn’t. It would help, probably, if she knew what reasonable even meant. She always thought it meant something that made sense, but sometimes Mommy said something was reasonable when it didn’t make sense, so that could be wrong. She made a mental note to ask Wolfie what he thought reasonable meant when she went home. He would probably know. But, just in case, she would ask their older sisters, too. When they came home, anyway. There was nothing wrong with asking a bunch of people the same question, after all.

“Well, then don’t you think you should get home before your father gets too worried?” Midagi asked. He would probably have to meet this father of hers as well. She had gone on so much about her mother that he had forgotten that she must have a father as well. She didn’t seem to be too upset about a father who yelled a lot, so he was going to reserve judgment on that as well. It was funny. Until he met this little filly, Midagi had never really thought of himself as a particularly judgmental stallion. Yet, here he was, passing judgment on a mare he had never met, and making a conscious effort NOT to make a decision on a stallion he had never laid eyes on. Was he more critical than he had originally thought? Or was this little foal bringing out the worst in him? And was it even really a bad thing? After all, he was merely concerned for her safety and happiness. Not every pair was meant to have a child.

“But Daddy’s always worried,” Nova reminded him. She had said as much just a moment ago. At least, she thought she had. Maybe she had confused herself. She frowned a bit as she tried thinking back to the conversation. Nope, she definitely mentioned that. She always mentions how much daddy worries when people ask. But then again, he had said worried too much, so maybe there were levels of being worried? She didn’t want to make daddy worry too much. That would be bad.

“I’m sure he does worry,” Midagi agreed. “And you did say as much. But there’s a difference between being concerned a little and being very worried. You wouldn’t want him to be too worried. It would upset him, and that sort of thing sticks with you, continues to haunt you even after you’ve been reassured that your fears were for nothing.” He paused, wondering if he was getting too deep for the child. Perhaps he was expecting too much from her right now.

As she listened, little Nova’s eyes widened a bit. She had never thought that a little worry could cause such lasting damage. She knew that Daddy didn’t sleep well, and that he was always jumping and shaking. But she thought that was because of the things he could see that she couldn’t. He always calmed down when Mommy talked to him. But did those things continue to haunt him even when Mommy managed to banish them? Nova’s respect for Daddy went up several notches as she considered that. He was always so scared, if it kept getting worse and worse and stayed with him always, then he had to be the bravest person she knew. Maybe even braver than Mommy! “So… Daddy… might keep being worried about me, even when I get back?” she asked.

“If he worries too much, yes,” Midagi confirmed, a bit relieved and impressed that she seemed to grasp the concept. He was clearly dealing with a very intelligent little foal. Now, the question was if she was unusual, or if he had always underestimated the foals he came across. He had always made a point not to interact with them, because he had felt that he didn’t understand children and that he shouldn’t talk to them. He had thought he would have screwed up the interaction. However, this little one seemed rather… charming. Yes, that was the word. She was a very charming little thing, and he was finding himself actually enjoying the conversation a bit. It was a delightful distraction from his current task of building his home.

“I don’t want him to worry lots,” Nova murmured, frowning. She didn’t want to be the reason Daddy missed another night’s sleep. Did her older sisters know about this? About how someone could worry about something even after everything turned out okay? Did Wolfie? No, she didn’t think Wolfie did. She should tell him, she decided. But first, she had to go home. She sighed heavily. “I should go,” she decided. “I don’t want Daddy to get upset. Maybe Mommy will be able to calm him down. Mommy always calms Daddy down when he gets scared. But I don’t want him to keep getting scared cuz of me.” That would definitely be bad, she thought. “Can I come back and play with you, sometime?”

“Uh…” He hesitated. It probably wouldn’t be such a great idea to just let her come back whenever she wished. What if she got hurt in his home? The place wasn’t anywhere near ready yet. But at the same time… “You may come back, however I ask that you be very careful,” he said, somberly. “Until I get my home built the way I would like it, it may not be safe. Perhaps if you would like to wait outside the wall, and call to me, I can let you know if it’s alright for you to come in.” Yes, that would be best, he thought. Once his home was up and running, he could tell her she could come whenever she liked. Assuming he still found her charming, at least.

“Okay!” Nova agreed, happily. She could definitely do that! She wouldn’t want to get into his way, anyway. And she would definitely talk to Mommy and Daddy, to let them know where she was going next time. There would be no more mistakes like to day. With another smile, she turned and started skipping away from his rock garden. Er, no, not a garden. He called it his home, though she wasn’t really sure how he could make such a place a warm home. It was nothing like her own little meadow with Mommy and Daddy and Wolfie. But then again, Akis preferred living in the water, and Mommy sometimes took a trip into the river, so maybe everyone had a different idea of what home was. If that was so, then maybe he liked rocks. Or maybe not, he did say he was building something.
Well, either way, she would definitely come back. She liked this stallion. But first, she was going to do it the right way. Maybe she’d introduce Mommy to him. No, maybe not Mommy. She didn’t want Mommy to scare Midagi off, which Mommy might do if she didn’t like him. Maybe she’d bring Daddy. Except… Daddy might be scared of him. She couldn’t do what Mommy did. Maybe she should bring them both and hope for the best. Yes, she decided. That was what she would do. If Mommy or Daddy said this was a bad idea, then she just wouldn’t come see Midagi again. Though she couldn’t think of a single reason why her mommy and daddy wouldn’t like Midagi. He was fun!
There was something else she was supposed to do. She remembered thinking that it was important, and that she would do it when she got home. It wasn’t whether or not she’d introduce her parents to Midagi. She only just decided on that. So what was it? As she pranced along the path that she was certain would take her home, she tried to remember everything that they had talked about over the past hour or so. She was fairly certain it was something that had come up while she was talking to the stallion. Was it about homes? No, that was something she was thinking about just a few moments ago. Was it about her parents? No, again, something she had just thought about. Her sisters? No, she didn’t think they came up very much.
What… was… it…. Oh! Right! She shook her head, amused at herself for forgetting something so important. She was going to ask her older sisters and Wolfie what they thought reasonable meant. Or was it responsible? Eh, either way, she’d ask, right after she told Mommy and Daddy all about their new neighbor!
