The blowing sand stung her face, but she did not look at Margaery. "I have not been home for many years. I would be a stranger to them and them to me. They would love me and accept me, but it is not my home anymore. It's true, you can't go home again."

Falsetto felt the unpleasant burn behind her eyes, the impending warning of tears. But she would not cry, she had not cried for years. She would not yield to that emotion--she would not give herself over to it.

What was there to say to Margaery? "I don't need your pity. Just leave, I'll be fine. Believe me or don't. I'm tired of these games and masquerades."

That's right push her away, push everyone away that gets too close--who asks questions she doesn't want to answer. Just leave her alone, don't make her think about it anymore. Don't make her feel like crying.

This was stupid. It was all so stupid, these hot emotions with a practical stranger. Yet, the stranger made her chest burn.

Margaery's lip twitched upward, almost a snarl. Her ears laid back. You were playing a game, her mind whispered to False. "I do not pity you and have not expressed pity," she growled. For the first time in a long time, Margaery felt dangerous. She would not be toyed with. She had been toyed with enough. She had the scars on her skin and the scars beneath it to prove it. "What am I to believe, when as you have said, there have been games and masquerades? I didn't know we were playing at any. What were you hoping to gain from such that couldn't be gained through honesty?" Though she wasn't sure why, her voice softened with the last question, and Margaery realized that that was her true question: if there had been games and masquerades, why had that been Falsetto's first approach? Was anything else naive?

Just for a moment, her perception of the mare before her changed from that of a skillful manipulator to a creature of circumstance, something that had been turned into what she was now, where honesty was less valued than deception as a tool to get whatever it was she wanted. What happened to you?

Shaking her head at herself for a moment, Margaery bit her lip. She supposed she could ask the same question of herself, when she had been so disillusioned.

I don't know what to believe, she thought.

But what was the point in saying it? False had played her games, tried to show this beautiful mare what she thought she wanted to see. The burn of tears blurred her vision, she wanted to run and hide but she would not. If she was going to cry, she'd at least do it with some dignity.

Hot tears streaked down her face and shone in the moonlight. She took a little breath, trying to steady her voice. "I don't know. There's no reason to believe me. I am vain. I am lost. I am a liar. How can one be loyal or kind if she is one of those? I don't know. I..." She sniffed, still in vain trying to hide her tears.
"There is no-no reason to believe me. I wanted to make you stay, I didn't want to be alone. But you can't even know if that's a lie."

She closed her blurry eyes, "I just don't know."

A glittering silver drop fell from Falsetto's face to the sand, and Margaery walked around Falsetto to see her face. Streams of silver drops lined her cheek and her nose as she spoke. Margaery listened, and despite the disparaging lines that framed it, she heard a heart opening to her, and that was not something she could turn away from. "There is not a being on earth who is solely those things," she said softly, peering into Falsetto's eyes beneath bangs that were white as snow in the moonlight. Falsetto's eyes shone the color of roses beneath her gleaming tears. "Why did you want me, a stranger, to stay with you?" she asked, gently probing. She took a breath, trying to form her words without giving offense. "It seems as though you have friends out here to whom you could call if you were lonely. Perhaps even some that are more than friends?" She tried to make it sound a curious question - anything that wasn't a judgment, because it wasn't a judgment. Having someone who was more than a friend, who could be trusted above many, was a boon. "Why did you want to make me stay?"

Margaery was before her with her big brown eyes, her face swam through the tears up at her. Here she was asking why she wanted her to stay, as though it wasn't obvious in some ways. "I am interested in you." Maybe I am all of those things. "You were pretty and charming. I wan-wanted to know you." She looked away from the depths of brown gazing at her.

"None too near. Knochen has his own problems without my own. He's not the...compassionate sort. Passionate, yes."

The tears still streamed down her face as she looked back at Margaery. "I thought that because you didn't know me. That you might. Stay." Her voice was soft, as she sniffled. Even Knochen didn't stay since he knew her. He was too bitter as she was. They were too bitter together.

"Because you didn't know me."

Margaery blinked back her surprise. Interested...? A bashful smile played at her lips, but she tried to hide it. Though Margaery felt the compliment like warm comfort running through her veins, she had to focus on listening. "I see," she said. Thoughts crowded into her mind, close and baffling, no matter how she might not want them. Had another mare ever been interested in her? It wasn't something she had often heard - she had courted princes, been a pet to that monster of a male. She admired her khaleesi, would do anything for her, but was that the same? And apart from whether the idea was novel or not, was it tolerable? "Wouldn't you rather I stayed because I was given the opportunity to know you, and not a masquerade donned to lure me in?" she whispered. "If it is someone to be close to that you need, I will listen," she said, closing her eyes for a moment. She had the khalasar to return to. She could not be gone forever.

Opening her eyes, Margaery looked up at Falsetto again. "If you would like, I will stay, and we can speak more of this, but I promise no more than talking. You have shown me that you are not a liar by your honesty, that you are not entirely lost by your drive to conduct your business." Smiling a little ruefully, Margaery added, "I think the vanity might need a little more work, but I doubt it is a fault, since you live alone."

False watched the slow smile on Margaery's lips. "I would," she answered honestly. But the real her had often gotten her nowhere. She was too brash, too bold with what she wanted or liked. She was as she was often too, a "bit much to handle."

"I would like that," she felt a pleasant heat humming in her chest. The tears were mercifully beginning to slow. "I don't even know what to say. What I would talk about with someone who would listen. I don't half know them myself."

It was a good promise. To have Margaery stay and talk to her, for her own sake--that was something. She did not tell her that there might not be more, but even if there was not this was enough. Someone to listen, to care if even for a little while.

False laughed through the final haze of tears. "My vanity has been my most constant companion, I doubt it'll leave easily." The cool winds wafted around them, stirring their hair in the night breeze.

Nodding, Margaery let her smile show. "I have a feeling there will always be something to talk about. I have all kinds of questions to ask." The wind brushed against her, chilly and gritty. Margaery stepped past Falsetto. "Let us go back to the tent where it is warm."

Walking around the side of the tent, Margaery steeled herself. It would be a long night if she was going to talk through it - and return to the khalasar in the morning. But that was her own issue; for now, she had made a promise, and she intended to keep it. Ducking through the entrance, she settled down between some pillows beside her tabards and looked expectantly up at Falsetto. "Do you want to talk about anything in particular?"

The warmth of the tent enveloped her after the chill of the night. Margaery sat there in front of her surrounded by the plush pillows. False took a careful seat a few feet away, half inclined on another pile of pillows. Her nose still felt sniffly, but the tears had mostly stopped.

Biting off a grape, she searched for a topic of conversation. "Tell me about the Khalasaar. What's it like? Is it dangerous or fun?" She needed to ease into talking about other things even though Margaery made her feel like opening up to her immediately.

Margaery shifted in her seat. I should have known it would not be so easy. Taking a breath, she started away, but was careful not to get lost in her memories of the khalasar; after all, she was hear to listen to Falsetto, not to be the one doing the talking. "The khalasar is a home for those who do not have them. For refugees, for lost souls. Everyone flocks to the khaleesi, to Daenerys. She is the herd, have no doubt. Without her, it would not exist. Some call her mhysa, mother. She takes care of the ones who need her, and we care for her in return. There were dangers - are dangers." Subconsciously, she flicked her forelock from her eyes, and the end of a pale scar appeared above her brow; the rest of it hid beneath her mane, curving up to end behind her ear on the other side of her head. "A queen with so many hard values will find that she has many hard enemies.

"Now, I believe it is my turn," said Margaery, and she smiled in the dim light. "Who was the stallion who left here earlier, the one who you know better than yourself?"

"That sounds cozy," False bit into a grape, letting the taste explode in her mouth. This Khahlessi sounded like an interesting sort. She'd heard of her before now, but never by someone close to Daenarys. "Mother?" She questioned. Well that was an interesting turn. "Why mother?"

Falsetto turned to study a grape intensely. "Knochen. We've known each other some time. We've been lovers off and on. Mostly off. He thinks he's not much o a stallion because he has no kalona traits." She shrugged, her bells chiming with the movement. "I think..maybe he's lonelier than I am."

Waiting for Falsetto to finish speaking before contemplating the question that was asked of her, Margaery frowned. How melancholy... "They have named her mother because she has rescued so many of them and taken them under her wing. Many love her as a mother."

Margaery's ears flicked with the little ringing noise that the bell made, and Falsetto's looking away from her did not go unnoticed. "He ought to think about who he is entertaining if he thinks he is not much of a stallion," she said, though it was an innocent statement, an observation - Falsetto did not seem like a mare who peered into the hearts of just anyone. Based on her assessment of Knochen and her hospitality and apparent interest in Margaery herself, Margaery was beginning to think that Falsetto might just be trying to mend broken souls... Or it could be something else entirely. She could not know what the mare was thinking, after all. "It sounds, to me, as though you might not like him much," she added, reanalyzing Falsetto's words in her head.

"That's kind of beautiful," she listened to the rest of Margaery's words. The first part gave a odd little lurch in her chest. "I don't like him much. Sometimes, I don't like him at all. But I feel...compassion for him. When he has no one else to turn to, he comes to me. If I need him, he will not turn me away. It doesn't solve anything. After, we're just as lonely as before. But for just a little bit..."

Falsetto turned back to Margaery. "For just a little bit, we're not alone. We're one. No worries or cares. He's nice to be lonely with most of the time." She tilted her head slightly, "Why are you with the Khalasar and not your home?"
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2015 2:31 am

Margaery's eyes widened as Falsetto spoke of her relationship with Knochen. That... is also beautiful. She nodded as Falsetto finished speaking of it, but her next question made Margaery's smile turn softer, to one of sadness. "That kind of connection must be gratifying, even if it lasts so short a time..." After all, she too knew loneliness, but hers was quieter, lurking around edges of her heart every night when she fell asleep near the friends that also seemed strangers to her - to her inner workings, anyway.

Letting out a soft chuckle, Margaery looked back at False as she came out of her thoughts. "I left home when the khalasar passed through. I was on a quest to find the prince that was promised to me from the time I was a foal." Seven forgive me.

False smiled, "And as always Princes are hard to find." She paused a moment, "It was gratifying. Is. But it is a paltry imitation of something I want. A knock-off." She shrugged her heavy shoulders. "But it is what I have."

"Tell me Margaery, has no one ever spoke to you and told you how beautiful you are? Not just superficially, but someone who sees the very fibers of your soul--someone who knows who you are inside and out?" She raised an eyebrow. "To be told that by someone who doesn't love you is kind, sweet even. It makes you feel very happy. But then you think, 'What would it feel like if this was real?' And once you think about that, no amount of stolen moments can outweigh the fact that the person who sees you through and through, does not love you."
