Maybe he'd spoken too soon, maybe there was an element of the drug that made Taym less human. Sitting with him in the reading room -- elbow on a table, and chin on his hand, watching him loll about -- didn't quite feel like engaging with another living person, a thought which made him frown just a little bit. When Taym got up, so did Ever: rolling to stand in an almost graceful way, clipboard set down so that he could trail in the man's wake and, if necessary, catch him before his head hit the ground. His eyes would to the clones, briefly and uncomfortably, because it seemed unwise to him to have them out and about and unmuzzled, in truth. "Thompson, sit down." He didn't have a good firm tone of voice. "Before you do yourself permanent damage."

This was the point at which Ever would get a sneer, get an angry comment less biting than it would have been if it hadn't been for the seven other thoughts jostling for clearance at his mouth, would get the restless irritated movement of Taym's shoulder, the imperious commands not to touch him. He looked at Ever, clearly trying to focus a thought into being a word. After a long, bewildered moment, he sank back down into his chair, docile and obedient. A glance to remember the clones and shift as if to rise again, a glance to Ever, and Taym subsided, this time, apparently, for good.

"Yeah, they're there, but I'm pretty sure they're as ******** up as you are, so." At least he managed to make it sound casual, even if -- in truth -- the whole thing made him uneasy. Ever stayed standing for another moment, instead, before slowly sinking back into his own chair. "Plus," he offered, as he fished out his pen again and picked up the clipboard. "We're armed, and they're not."

A pause, and Taym laughed, tired and faintly incredulous. And then he laughed again, more quietly, this time to himself.

Ever echoed the sound Taym had made before: tch, dismissive, tapping his pen against the page. "I'm not saying I wouldn't prefer them leashed, though."

"I cut that one's head off," he murmured apathetically, indicating the restless, wide-eyed Ezekiel. "Almost. And I did cut that one's head off." This, indicating 7. It took him a while to find his way to the end of both those sentences. "I took too much," he repeated placidly, not sounding upset about it at all. "Been too long."

"If I hadn't seen you empty the contents of your stomach into a mop bucket, I might be jealous." It was distracted, though: Ever's attention on the duplicates, chin on his hand as he tapped the page. He should be taking notes. That was why he was there. And yet, he just stared, frowning a tiny bit. "What do you mean you cut its head off?"

"Decapitated," he clarified. "Decollate, archaic. Collar. From the Latin," he added, vague and halting, "but you knew that."

"And what? It grew back?" A horrifying idea; Ever didn't look thrilled, as dark eyes resettled onto Taym.

Silence. Obviously it had. It would have required energy to point this out, and so he didn't.
