Axel collapsed at the same time.
He wheezed.
Caught his breath.
"I was faster," he said.

Henrik made a rather crude gesture in Axel's direction.

Henrik realized that he was laying in one of the eggs he'd previously dropped. He didn't bother moving.
"This is the worst idea. I am still not convinced that this cake will be edible."

Oh yeah, the cake. Axel got up, brushed some shells off himself, and pulled the cake out of the oven.
It looked. Well.
Brownish-pink.
Holding the pan with oven mitts, Axel flipped it upside down over a tray and the cake reluctantly flopped out. Several chunks were still stuck to the inside of the pan, giving it a raggedy look.
"We just have to put some frosting on it," Axel said, staring at the cake.

He liked walking at night, but there were no walls nearby and it was too open and something smelled. Something smelled really funny. Alister opened the door to the kitchen and his mouth rounded.
"What is that?"

"Cake," came a reply from the floor. "Pickled beet cake."

Axel didn't like Henrik's tone. They had done their best, and the theory was sound, so there was no reason to go popping off about pickled beet cakes in that disparaging tone.
"It just needs icing," Axel said to the mysterious voice. Backlit by the moon, Alister was a tall dark shadow.

"Oh," Alister said. It didn't look cake-like.
"Oh," he said again. Suddenly, he smiled brightly. "I know frosting! Because Stephen is a cook and I watched him once and you stir things together and frosting happens!" He waited expectantly.
"Do you have things to stir together?"

"He tried to give me boiled eggs to put in the cake," came the voice again.
"Boiled eggs. In a pickled beet cake."

Axel kicked at the floor voice, annoyed.
"There's milk and butter."
Pause.
"And beets."
Pause.
"And you can talk s**t about our pickled beet cake, Henrik, when you can do thirty pushups without slowing down. You were slowing down. I saw you."
Pause.
"And stop talking bad about our cake. It's a friendship cake."

"If you had to, I bet you could make a cake out of boiled egg. An egg-cake. Or like... surprise! Egg inside!" Alister trailed off, thinking.
"Butter, beets and uh... something dry? Flour?" He moved to the pantry, but tripped over Henrik. Timber.

Suddenly there was someone tripping over him. Henrik's hand shot out as he tried to make at least some sort of attempt at preventing a horrific fall.
"I only slowed down because the cake smelled as though it was burning," Henrik corrected Axel haughtily, manhandling the purple-haired young man as though it was something he did on a regular basis. Except he couldn't really manhandle him, because the dude was ******** taller than he was.
So instead, he elbowed him in the gut. On accident.
"I dropped some eggs," Henrik explained airily. "So be careful."

"Sheesh," said Axel loftily, gathering up some more beets. And flour. "Settle down, guys."
He slipped on Henrik's eggs and dropped the flour all over Alister and Henrik.
Whoompf.
A plume of flour gusted up.

Alister made an ugly noise. "Ow. You have very... big elbows." And then, he was covered in flour. He coughed.
"We cannot make frosting on the floor, please."
