Mahyra finds M’dre, a stout woman in her early thirties, in one of the common areas. She is alternating between tears and railing loudly at anyone who will listen - mostly a sympathetic friend who seems to be fairly ready with a handkerchief. She insists to Mahyra that her sister wouldn’t be killed like that - that on the contrary, until she got pregnant, Merinde was training as a wherhandler. She would know what to do if she was confronted by a wher! Her sister could be stupid, sure, and she could be argumentative, but… but she didn’t deserve this, and no-one is taking her seriously!

Bereck is turned away by Amarid: unfortunately, the body has already been sent between… and as much as she values his work, she’s not as inexperienced as he seems to think she is. Her conclusions are solid. Now if he’ll excuse her, she’s off to visit her grandchildren.

Character Name: Mahyra

Clue followed: Other - Wher Handlers

Course of action: Mahyra wants to confirm if Merinde was training to be a wherhandler. Although a bit slow on the uptake, Mahyra does find it a bit odd that a wherhandler-in-training would be killed by a wher. So she goes to find the wherhandlers to see if any of them knew Merinde or know more about what M'dre's saying.

Character Name: Kialynka

Clue followed: Other- Have the drudges noticed anyone unusual in the stores after aniseed oil? Or perhaps some has gone missing?

Course of action: The state of the stores was a disappointment, and so too where the children in their way. Though it seemed odd that they didn't really know their mother. Without any clues she moves on. The only possible source that she could tell for the oil was the stores. Kia does her best to find drudges who have worked in the stores lately. Did they notice anyone unusual coming in to get aniseed oil? Or perhaps notice that more was missing than there should be?

Character Name: Vanavia

Clue followed: Merinde's sister

Course of action: So the drudge had a family? Wait, that's stupid of course she had a family. When Vanavia visits M'dre it isn't to poke her for theories and such, it is to genuinely pay her respects and offer any comfort she can to someone who has lost a sibling. She may have only met Merinde once and not under the best of circumstances, but that doesn't mean her death should be ignored.

Character Name: Shylla

Clue followed: Disappearance

Course of action: Now there's possibly a second victim?? Shylla spends some more time in the Lower Caverns, talking to anyone she can find about the missing drudge. Who was he? Where was he last seen? Where did he come from? Where did he go?

Character Name: L'ssa

Clue followed: To the Lower Caverns!

Course of action: Well, there's really only one way of determining the actual culprit, and that's to go on a hunt. Despite Caldweth's protests, L'ssa marches down to the storage rooms by herself, sword at the hip, and she begins rummaging around for a secret entrance where the wher might be getting in and out. If she finds anything of interest, she's going to go looking for a nest made of drudge-parts. Whers totally made nests in the wild, right?

Character Name: Alcine

Clue followed: The Baths (finally)

Course of action: After the initial excitement of finding a clue fades, Alcine finds herself curious about the actual bathhouse, and when she gets some free time, goes to search for clues again. She can't convince Leoth to try and sniff things out (the trail is much too old anyway), but she does convince her to stand vigil, watching for strangers and gnashing at anyone who gets too close while Alcine scours the ground.

Mahrya does some asking… but none of the wherhandlers seem to really have known her. One of them vaguely remembers that she had been a wher candidate - but it had been a long time ago, and didn’t she drop out? The woman she’s talking to shrugs, because… who cares? She was just a drudge. There’s a baker's dozen more where she came from, and then some.

Kialynka asks around, and finds one of the drudges who - being semi-literate - regularly works in the store rooms, checking tallies and signing things in and out. He doesn’t really remember anyone but the cooks getting aniseed recently, though the healers request the oil from time to time. Apparently it’s good for the breath and the digestion. Everything checks out, though, except the stuff broken by that wher… shardit, that thing has been a nuisance for months and no-one did anything! It could’ve been him! What good are riders, if they can’t even deal with a wher in their own Weyr?!

Vanavia finds M’dre not long after Mahrya leaves, sobbing on her friend. It isn’t long before she’s sobbing on Vanavia as well, because M’dre is not one to put on a brave face or hold her sorrow in. Her sister is dead, and the weyr doesn’t care, because she’s just a drudge! She wasn’t killed by a wher, and M’dre is going to prove it. She’ll find the sort of proof that’ll make the Senior Investigator sit up and pay attention, that old b***h…!

Shylla manages to collar On’ya - the old woman is busy, busy, busy - who tells her that Michen was from Tillek. He had good references, enough so that his contract was offered as part of one of their minor hold’s tithes, if she’s remembering the right man. She oversees a lot of people, don’t make that face, she had to look up the details for the Senior Investigator. She’s not surprised he vanished - it’s not unknown for drudges to disappear and attempt to reinvent themselves somewhere no-one knows them or their debts. She loses maybe… ten, eleven a turn like that? Most of them come slinking back after a sevenday at most, hungry and ragged. She only bothers asking the wings to find them if they’ve stolen, honestly. No-one else seems to know him very well: he’d only been in the Weyr about a month, and seemed to keep himself to himself. He was forgettable.

L’ssa spends about ten minutes before she begins to Really Get In The Way of some Lower Cavern workers. One of them gives her an irritated stare and assures her that shardit, if there were any secret passages, they’d have found them turns ago. Rider, please let them get on with their work?

Alcine finds… the baths. Somewhat unsurprisingly, she’s not allowed into the men’s side of the baths, and the attendant will give her a withering look if she tries. There are strangers around, but they seem to mostly be enjoying the fact that the Weyr has hot water and steam rooms. Really, she’s lucky it’s not the time of turn that people like to run out from them and roll in the snow.

Character Name: Brishen

Clue followed: Wher hunt

Course of action: To the hunt masters! He needs an education. Brishen seen whers and he has an idea of what they do, but not how they do it. He is bright and eager to learn though and Hazmath is even interested. He thought they were strict meat eaters , like dragons, but maybe he was wrong.

Character Name: Vanavia

Clue followed: Other - Library/records, looking up aniseed

Course of action: So M'dre doesn't think it was a wher. Maybe T'gall's attack and Merinde's are- no. Just no. Vanavia is not about to go snooping around places she shouldn't be. So she is just going to shut herself away in read. Nobody ever got involved in trouble from reading. Vanavia disappears into the records/library and looks into aniseed. That talk with the wherhandler has peaked her interest. Horteth is less interested and decides to nose about under desks and between things.

Brishen is laughed at when he suggests to an older wherhandler that a wher might eat anything but meat. Sure, they’ll sometimes eat other stuff if it happens to be in their way, but it’s not exactly common. Mostly just if they’re really hungry. Or bored. His Jesk once ate a spoon.

Vanavia finds a book of plants, with delicate illustrations of the plants in question. Anise turns out to grow almost three feet tall, with feathery leaves and white flowers. It is described as growing best in light and fertile soil that drains well, preferring warm climates. It has a variety of uses, including the treatment of menstrual cramps and for improving the breath. She is watched like a hawk by a harper.

Character Name: Brishen

Clue followed: Other - Candidates

Course of action: Welp, that hadn't gone as planned but it did give him something to think about. Mainly why would the wher make such a mess in the stores, outside of boredom. There are a lot of beasts and other things for it to eat. Still, he would look more into it later.

He should speak to some candidates, maybe one of them saw something and was just too scared to speak up. And the candidate barracks are familiar and sort of home like.

Character Name: Jasiline

Clue followed: Other - Candidates

Course of action:

After talking with Brishen and hearing what he had to say on the matter of T'gall Jasiline changed course. It would be much more interesting to pestervisit her old friends among the candidates. Jasiline's not one for beating around the bush and when she finds a mess of them she comes right out with it. Word on the street was T'gall had seen one or more candidates in the tunnels before he was attacked, anyone know who they may have been, or what they may have been up to?

Character Name: Vanavia

Clue followed: Other - Library - Scent tracking research

Course of action: Huh, so Anise wasn't likely to have been grown near High Reaches if it was better in warmer climates. Still, with so many uses it was likely that the Weyr would have a supply. How much would be needed to cover a persons trail though? Vanavia very much doubted there would be a book in here that had instructions or measurements for making such a thing, but some research into whers and scent tracking wouldn't go amiss. There might be something on covering trails.

Brishen and Jasiline run into each other in the barracks. Who’d have thought? (Great minds think alike?) The two of them do manage to track down a girl named Senjene who claims to have seen T’gall shortly before. She’s a tall skinny thirteen turn old, with a tendency to stutter when she’s excited. She doesn’t think she saw anyone else, though - just a drudge or two passing by, it was just her and Kerel and they were both late for class.

Vanavia finds a treatise on wher tracking abilities. It sounds like… well, like it’s very tough to lose a well-trained wher if they’re on your trail. Running water seems to help, but the harper who was talking to wherhandlers claims that a fugitive will still leave a scent-trail above the water that they can track, and it’s easy to find them when they get out of it again. The few documented cases of whers losing a scent once they’ve picked it up mostly involve a very strong smell - one fugitive dropped a cayenne pepper bomb that took out the tracking wher’s smell for several hours. However, when hunting in a pack, the next handler along can direct their wher right around…

Character Name: Vanavia

Clue followed: Scent whers

Course of action: That's very interesting. It looks like Vanavia might go and seek out her new handler friend and her blue. She tries to be discreet getting there. She really shouldn't be poking at this, but between her curiosity and Horteth's encouragement the girl's hooked. Besides, the handler seemed happy to talk before. About that scent tracking specifically, just how hindering could an aniseed bomb be? Was it something they usually had to deal with? Surely that'd be a pain in the neck.

Character Name: Brishen

Clue followed: Senjene - Drudge

Course of action: Drudge that died, drudge that passed by before T'gall was attacked. Maybe they are connected. Brishen cheerful and a bit flattering trying to see if Senjene remembers anything about the pair of drudge or drudge that passed by.
